Oh my god, episode 39 of GetBackers just killed me. The most hysterically bizarre filler episode ever coupled with the crazy dancing South Park-esque new ending... I can't even believe it was real. Any second now I'm going to hear Ban say "Jasuto ippun da!" and it will all have been a crazy dream.

...I'm waiting, Ban... T-T

Man, I have been really... not updating. ^_^* Oh well. Today I mostly just logged in because last night I had a CRAZY PIRATE DREAM!!!11 I don't remember all of it, but yes, it DID have both Jack Sparrow and Will in it, and I think Elizabeth too, although I also think that sometimes I WAS Elizabeth. I don't remember much about the beginning except that we were all on the Black Pearl and were anchored at this little tropical island, and I also remember wandering into the kitchen and the cook was making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. And cutting the crust off. Oh yes, they were fearsome pirates indeed.

This is when the dream got less pleasant. A bunch of planes flew by overhead. I was the only one who knew what planes even were, heh... anyway, the planes dropped some bombs or something of some sort on the island, and it caused all this metal shrapnel to rain down on the ship. I threw myself face down on the ground and lots of little metal pieces dug into my back - ow. But it didn't seem too damaging, because I was okay. But the planes were still circling the island, so I decided it would be smart to get everyone below decks.

As soon as I had this brilliant idea, I realized the ship was FULL of people - civilian-type people. Lots of old people and little kids, and a dog that looked like Kathleen's dog Mick. So I had to make all these people get belowdeck, and there was only one entrance that went below deck, and a lot of them didn't believe there was a problem and didn't want to go. ARGH! It was so frustrating!

At some other point in the dream - I think after I woke up to let the dog out and then fell asleep again - I ended up somehow falling overboard. So did Jack and Will, though, so that wasn't so bad, hee. We were all clinging to some random floating board, and then all these waterspout things started forming around us. I was terrified, but Jack seemed excited about it. He told us to spread out on the board so that there was an equal distance between all of us. We did, and then one of the spouts picked us up and we went flying up in the air, spinning. I was kind of scared but Jack was having the time of his life and laughing hysterically. It was actually sort of fun in retrospect.

The only other part of the dream I remember is something about being at a capsule toy machine with Crysta, which obviously had nothing to do with anything, heh.

Avast ye, maties!

I don't even know what that means, but I just saw "Pirates of the Caribbean" FINALLY (it opened in Japan today) and it was so awesome I can't even believe how awesome it was. Actually, it made me want to go on the ride again, since I know a couple of moments were lifted directly from it (the dog with the keys in its mouth was the most noticable one, since I haven't been to the Magic Kingdom since I was 10. The skeleton pirates in the beginning of it scared me at the time, as I recall.) Yeah, anyway, I can't even begin to explain how much I loved it except that it was the awesomest thing I've seen in a while. Plus I was seeing it with Japanese subs, which was interesting. Actually, it was almost helpful a couple of times - I picked up names more easily (the first time they showed the Dauntless I couldn't read its name, but it was subtitled in katakana, heh). They also subbed it in a really cool font that was all funky-looking yet still easy enough to read that even I could puzzle it out. I loved the movie so much that afterwards (and yes, I stayed for the extra bit after the credits) I went and bought the little gold medallion thingy they were selling in the lobby. Why don't American theaters sell stuff like that? The best time to get people to plunk down money on silly merchandise is when they've just finished the movie and are on a "OMFG that was awesome" high. (I'm still on it, I think.)

Er, in other news, I'm in Japan and I come home Tuesday, which is good because i have like 2000 yen to feed myself off of today. Also, I am now 21. Neato.

Grarrrrgh.

Why do I hate Doot so much? I can't figure it out, but it's gotten to the point where he doesn't even have to do anything and I want to smack him. I'm not even exagerrating - we'll be sitting around, and he'll pull up a chair and sit down without even saying anything and I just go "ARRGH DOOT KILL KILL" (mentally, of course). Every time he wants to go somewhere with us I groan inwardly. Blargh. And now Tako, the NICE guy, is apparently hooking up with a random married Japanese girl. Even though he was going after Janie. Are there no decent men in the world???

(Must not think about Casey, must not think about Casey, must not think about Casey... gah, I feel like a lame highschooler, and I bet I sound like one too. Oh well.)

Oh yeah, I actually had an adventure yesterday. It involved getting somewhat lost on the way home from Kyoto with Kiri-san... somehow our train switched lines without us noticing until we were stranded in the middle of nowhere. We actually had to stay in a hotel overnight, which was a bit annoying at the time but actually kind of cool overall. It was 6000 yen a night, which isn't that bad, and included a good breakfast. It was nice to take a shower and sleep in an air-conditioned room, anyway. Today is the Day of No Homework. I mean, as in, I'm not doing any homework, not that I wasn't assigned homework. I've kind of given up all hope on these stupid classes. Argh. I'm going to miss Japan though...

My post-Harry Potter bliss has managed to keep me pretty happy for a while, but class is still continuing, and continuing to suck as well. I'm getting a nice solid C though, and I honestly am happy with it. When I went to get my midterm results today, I couldn't even drum up any worry. I was more nervous about having to pretend to understand Onishi-sensei than anything else. Today we also had a naginata demonstration, and I got to play the koto some more. It was pretty cool. I think I could actually get good at the koto if I, you know, could afford to buy one and stuff. But yeah... that's about it. I'm only really updating because a random person on Neopets messaged me and told me to. It was pretty random. And man... the more I look at this layout the less I like it. I mean, I still like that picture, because it's Sexy Jet, but it's so hard to read the white on black with the gray links. What was I thinking?? Oh well.

...and now I am off to do some homework, or eat, or something. I actually feel like I should sieze the opportunity and wander around somewhere outside, since for once the sun is out, but there's nowhere I really have to go and Kathleen isn't here to hang out with anyway. (I miss having her around all the time, sigh.) My mom's birthday is tomorrow and she sent me money, so I have to email her also. And get in touch with my conversation partner, who probably thinks I'm dead. Eek.

In my Harry Potter Character Hierarchy, the characters in the first and second spots have survived OotP. The character holding the number 3 spot was not so lucky... >.< Still, for me, I guess it's not too bad. The other two just have two more books to get through! Yay.

Why am I so very depressed lately? My only really happy moment came today when we watched a Hong Kong bootleg version of the first One Piece movie. It was fun and the horrible subbing was just part of the amusement factor. Crysta kept calling it stupid, but bleh, she obviously just doesn't appreciate One Piece. But yeah, I'm really depressed, and part of it is because I'm in a class that's way harder than I can handle and part of it is because I'm just not motivated enough to work toward being able to handle it. The more I study Japanese the more convinced I am that I'm never going to be very good at it... gah. I hate my classes a lot, which is too bad, because everything else here is pretty cool. I do miss Kathleen though. I think part of the depression factor is not having her to talk to, honestly. So I'm just sitting here thinking about how I should probably do my homework, but I can't really because I can't read it. It really sucks. A lot.

Well, I met my conversation partner today. She's a 38-year-old elementary school teacher, which made me worry that she'd be a little bit boring, but BOY was I wrong! = ) Seriously, this woman is awesome. I went to Coco's after her English class with two friends of hers, Kathleen, and Crysta and Doot-san, who are the language partners of one of her friends. We just sat around talking about random stuff like karaoke, action movies, and Kathleen's horseback riding. We also talked about cosplay, and they took our otakudom in stride, heh. At one point we were being kind of loud and Hiromi (my language partner) said that Japanese people are usually quiet and elegant, but they weren't because they were "special". She doesn't know a whole lot of English, but we each know enough of the other language to communicate fairly decently. I kind of like that it's a bit of a challenge; it forces us to think about things. We're meeting again on Friday after our exam for sushi, which should be fun. I feel really good about this = )

Heaven on Earth

11:20 p.m.
Wow, now that song is in my head. You know, the one from the 80`s that`s all, "Oooh, heaven is a place on earth!" Um, anyway. Yesterday we went to the Lake Biwa Museum and then made some pottery, and that was pretty fun. But today we went to... Osaka! We left fairly early in the morning and took the train, which was 1890 one-way and took about an hour and fifteen minutes. I even got a seat the whole way - lucky! When we got to Osaka we immediately hopped on the subway to the Nanba area, which incurred some grumbling from the masses, but Nanba turned out to be THE place to be, seriously. Shops upon shops, and food every five feet. We wanted to head to Den Den Town, which is where the electronics are (and Mandarake),

Unfortunately, upon leaving the station I had no idea which direction we were facing. Actually, I had a vague guess, which turned out to be right, but we didn`t have to chance it because a random Japanese woman overheard us discussing it and came up and offered to show us the way, in very good English. Her name was Yuri, and she ended up walking with us all the way to Den Den Town, which wasn`t actually very far. We were all starting to get hungry by then so she showed us to a McDonald`s - we think she thought that, as Americans, we must want to eat American, and we were all too polite to say otherwise. Plus, Makudo is pretty cheap. I tried the tofu burger, and it was really good.

We had actually passed the Mandarake on the way to Makudo, so we went back and discovered doujinshi heaven. I bought a bunch of Trigun and a few FFX, including three Toshimi Nigoshi books. Her art is so nice. And Vash and Wolfwood actually have semi-graphic sex in one. Anyway, after quite a while browsing Mandarake, we wandered into a "duty-free shopping" store, aka Tourist Souveniers Ahoy! The place was full of things that I think only ever actually get sold to tourists, like Chokin plates and dolls dressed as ninja. They did change traveler`s checks there though, which a few people in the group took advantage of.

Afterward we were just kind of standing around wondering where to go when I realized we were right next to a different anime store, called Animate. I told the group that I wanted to check it out, and Kathleen and I headed inside. At first I thought it was just a manga store, but then I realized that there was a second floor. Upon climbing the stares, I caught a glimpse of the face of God. Well, if the face of God looks like a giant plushie Poring.

It was seriously a Poring. From Ragnarok. Huge and pink. It was also 2800, which is why I didn`t by it, but I`m sort of regretting it in retrospect.

Then Kathleen started squealing, although not in a terribly obnoxious way, and I was alerted to PILES OF GETBACKERS MERCHANDISE!!!! When we realized the store had shopping baskets, we just went crazy throwing junk into our bags. I ended up spending just under 1000, and Kathleen spent almost 3000 (although she has a nefarious e-bay scheme planned that might recoup some of that.) When we were just getting started into the GB stuff, Doot-san came up to us and said that everyone was ready to go. He seemed kind of gruff about it, but we basically told him that there was no way in Hell we were going to leave that store so soon. And thus, we were split up from the rest of the group.

I actually think we spent about two hours in that place, although I can`t be sure, because once we were there time lost all meaning. Eventually we left, though, and wandered back towards the station and the covered mall surrounding it. It was a pretty cool place but we had just dropped so much money we were kind of reluctant to spend any more. Then we tried finding the Hard Rock Cafe, mostly just because I wanted to see it, but the attempt failed, so we went back to Umeda, since we had to catch the train back to Hikone there anyway. Umeda turned out to be much less interesting than Nanba, but we did eat dinner at the top of a shopping center that was TEN FLOORS. The restaurant turned out to be Thai, and I had a salad that was quite tasty but really too small to be worth the 680 I paid for it. Ah well. Then we went into the station seeking ice cream and instead found crepes; I got a chocolate and banana one and it was awesome. Then we got on the train, which was jam-packed at first but totally deserted by the time we got to Kyoto. Then it was just a quick bike trip back, which was surprisingly unhindered by the MOUNTAINS OF ANIME MERCHANDISE we had bought. Mine all fit in my backpack somehow.

And now here we are! The other group still isn`t back, even though they should be since they planned on leaving Osaka by nine. We have this theory that Yuri, our guide, was actually a gaijin-murdering serial killer not unlike the evil hotel owner from Fake volume 2. Hopefully we`re wrong. Dang, today was awesome. Dang, I spent a ton of money.

I think Sarah would love Osaka, by the way. Lots of tall buildings, lots of stores and restaurants, and people EVERYWHERE. It got a bit overwhelming for me at times, especially in the train station, but it was really a great experience overall. Now I`m absolutely exhausted and have a bag full of mansex waiting for me.

Hmm.

03:23 p.m.
You'd think I'd update all the time since I'm in Japan now, but no. I guess part of the reason is that I write so many long emails home I forget that I'm not saying all the same things here; I should probably just copy and paste them or something to keep the whole two people who read this and are not already here with me updated. I did karaoke Friday, and spent time shopping at Viva City, and ate lots of good food (we're going back to the okonomiyaki place today), and bought random manlove manga (this one is about an art teacher and a gym teacher, and is actually fairly plot-driven from the looks of things)... and watched GetBackers on TV, which was awesome in ways that cannot be described to people who don't watch a lot of anime... I'm also apparently the only person who actually enjoys this program, although I kind of think everyone else is still stuck in that "classes are so overwhelming I'm amazingly frustrated" funk that I got out of after like a week. I seriously like Hikone; I feel like it's the perfect balance between the rural and the metropolitan, and that I can see both sides of Japan right here. I can go to shopping centers and take a short train ride to Kyoto or Osaka, or I can go a little ways out of town and see rice paddies. It's pretty cool in my opinion. Plus we have that Toys R Us, which is all you really need.

We're planning to go to Osaka this weekend, although "planning" is kind of a loose term right now since we haven't really decided where in Osaka we want to go, and it's kind of too big a place to wander aimlessly. I also feel the need to figure out a budget for mysef, although I think I'm doing okay so far. I don't want to go broke in mid-July, though. Aaaanyway, I'm going to go find some anime store guides for Osaka = ) Yay!

I have discovered my weakness.

10:07 p.m.
Today I discovered a place that calls to me and my wallet with a siren song, dangerous yet alluring. That place is Toys R Us. We took a train down to South Hikone today to visit a gigantic shopping plaza called Viva City, but the real draw there was the Toys R Us right next to it. I caved in and bought the Naruto ninja headband for 1200-some yen. The thing is awesome - real metal, and the fabric is thick; you can tell it`ll hold up for a while. I wore it around for a while tonight before I showered. I also bought Uno - but not just any Uno. This is One Piece Uno, with big character art on all the cards. I love Uno anyway and don`t actually own a deck, so this doesn`t feel like TOO much of a waste of money, heh. In Viva City itself I bought the Getbackers OST (which I already wanted) and then was lured in by the capsule toys. I did break down and do the Trigun one, and got Dominique; the Trigun capsule toys are really awesome, and I like all the figures in the set, so I figured that one was a fairly safe bet. It`s actually probably a good thing that there wasn`t a machine with set 1 or I might`ve spent tons of yen trying for Wolfwood. I also got two small souveniers - one for Robin and one for Sarah. I`m not saying what they are, though - it`s a surprise!

Came back home and had another piece of toast with cheese on it. Mmmm. We have leftover soba for lunch tomorrow, which means I might be able to avoid buying much food for a while. Which, of course, is a good thing. I didn`t break down and get any snacks today besides the peach Fanta from the vending machine at Viva City, which I only got because I was amazingly thirsty. (Funny story: the first vending machine I saw got my hopes up by being blue and saying something like "very cooling" on the top... but was a cigarette machine. I haven`t seen cigarettes in vending machines in so long!)

So, yeah, today has been good, with the exception of a very stressful class period. I think class is going to get better... I hope, anyway. I have to finish writing my sakubun for tomorrow, actually. I hope my teacher doesn`t have a problem with me saying I want to be a pirate.

Stupid dreams return!
Tuesday, June 3, 2003
01:15 p.m.
I've had not one, but TWO stupid dreams the last two nights. The first involved this huge fortress with a tower, where a whole bunch of random anime characters from different shows lived. The fortress was under attack by some evil army or something, and Wolfwood and Midvalley were gone looking for Vash, which meant we were significantly weaker than normal. (The only other characters I specifically remember being in the dream are Hale, Guu, and Clive-sensei; Guu spent most of the dream coloring in a coloring book). Midvalley and Wolfwood had sex at one point, which was nice, heh.

Last night I had a dream where I was Link from Legend of Zelda (young pantsless Link, even). Part of the time I was in the real world, but then sometimes I'd be transported to this weird castle, where I'd run around fighting things and solving puzzles. If my HP ran out, I'd black out and wake up back in the real world. In the castle, I was stuck at a point where I found a room full of flowers (some of them carnivorous) and I had to find gifts for them. The gifts were random things like stuffed animals, watches, and umbrellas. In the real world I spent most of my time hanging out with a friendly giant octopus man and Brad Pitt, whom I had a crush on. Now, Brad Pitt is hot and all, but he's not really someone I think about often, so I have no idea why he turned up in my dream. I think I met him because he was playing golf and his ball landed in my yard, and I found it for him. Since I was little-boy Link at the time, the whole crush thing was actually pretty adorable.

There was also a part of the dream where I was trying to prove that a guy who had killed another guy using some kind of magic hadn't done it on purpose, but I don't remember that part clearly at all except that part of it involved finding a hidden message in a painting, and I realized at one point that the way the people in the painting were positioned formed the kanji "tsuki". That's a pretty weird thing for my brain to come up with in a dream too.

I just remembered that Brad Pitt also drove a big minivan with an ET mural painted on the side. God, dreams are weird. Oh yeah, and Japan is fun, etc etc. Today for breakfast I had a piece of bread which I stuck in the toaster oven for a minute and put a slice of cheese on. Japanese bread is really thick, and it was great. Today we're going to take a train to Viva City. I have no idea what Viva City actually is except that it's apparently fun, and a girl accidentally called it "Vice City" yesterday, which made us all laugh. A lot. Before that, though, we have to talk to Ohnishi-sensei, which I'm not looking forward to. I can't understand her in class; talking to her out of class shouldn't be any easier. Shinpai suru ^_^*

12:38 p.m.
Okay, I haven't blogged in a while, and I apologize to the handful of people who actually read this. I really have to post about what happened last night, though. Heck, I almost got on after I got home, but it was after two a.m., the computer wasn't even turned on, and I had to work at nine this morning (I'm on my lunch break now, which will be exceptionally long because it is my last day and I am slacking off). Anyway, yesterday was a get together thing at Crysta's. Lots of food, grilled burgers, more cookies than anyone needs, generally fun. Saw people I haven't seen in a while, because I've hardly seen ANYONE in a while, heh. We spent most of the time looking at stupid flash videos, which was entertaining. Anyway, James seemed to be hanging around me a lot, which I did notice because I'm not totally unobservant. Well, not all the time. ^_^* But I didn't think anything of it, really. Even when we were watching random Kingdom Hearts video clips and his hand kind of brushed mine, I assumed it was an accident, because, well, James is gay, right? ^_^*

Then he asked me if I could give him a ride home, and I agreed, and that's when I suddenly really wondered if he was trying to hit on me or something. Most of the ride home was fairly uneventful, although he did make a comment about how even though he had been identifying as gay he had been pretty confused about it. (I'm condensing this story a bit, by the way.) So I'm like, okay, that's interesting. And I gave him my speech about labels being dumb. So we get to the apartment, and as we're stopped there he confesses that the reason he's been confused lately is because of me. I mean, whoa. What do you say to that, besides "Well, I'm leaving the country in a few days, ehehehe", which is basically what I said, with much blushing and giggling because that's what I do whem I'm embarrassed. I'm also really horrible at dealing with being put on the spot like that, but basically I told him that I LIKED him but I hadn't really considered anything more (since, you know, he's GAY ^_^*) and I told him that since I was leaving for Japan for ten weeks it would be stupid to promise anything, and asked him to please not wait for me or anything because that would just make me feel guilty. He said okay, and then he asked if he could at least have a good-night kiss, and I said yes partly because I'm not good at saying no and partly because it occured to me how long it had been since I'd kissed anyone (whoo, I'm pathetic). Then I went home in a kind of daze, just going, "I'm making someone question their sexuality?????" ^_^* That's a new one. I'm not even sure if I'll see him again before I leave. I also don't know if Crysta and/or Bob knew about this beforehand, or if I should tell them about it (although I don't see why I shouldn't - James didn't ask me not to or anything).

That's really about all I have to say, besides that I have a feeling of general nervousness and excitement that's not lending to very good sleep. ^_^* Last night I dreamt that my room was really big and I had hardly any posters and was all excited because I had tons of space to put new stuff. I'm sure that means something.

Dude, this is just messed up.

This'll probably be the last layout for a long time, seeing as how I'm going to Japan in two weeks. I dunno, is it too boring? I don't usually do black-and-white stuff like this. I'd like to learn how to do more complicated stuff, but whatever. It's Jet, he's hot, all's well.

Jet Black, the most under- appreciated character in Cowboy Bebop... gruffly sexy, protective, stable, why doesn't this guy get more love from the fans? His nickname from his cop years was "Black Dog"... once he bites, he doesn't let go. A very stark layout for a change...
