Spirited Away!

Spirited Away is being presented by the Kalamazoo Film Society this weekend. I really urge anyone who reads my blog and is anywhere near here to go ^_^* I'm going tonight at 9:30, most likely. Even if I have to go by myself, heh. (I actually think my dad and grandma might be interested. I'll talk to them about it today.) It's the dub, but the dub is really good, in my opinion. I liked it even more than the Mononoke dub - Daveigh Chase is really great as Chihiro. Of course, I haven't seen the sub to compare it to, but still. ^_^* Go!

Three Seconds of Fame!

I was in the computer lab today making an easy-to-read, double-spaced, typed romanji version of my Japanese speech when a News 3 camera guy came in and took some random shots in the computer lab. Then he did a big long closeup of me working ^_^* So then I had to watch the news forever so I could see if I was on. And guess what - there was a closeup of me that lasted several whole seconds. I'm like a celebrity or something, except that it's only Kalamazoo news and nobody will know who I was... oh well, it was kind of amusing.

P.S.: Wolf's Rain keeps on kicking more ass. I want episode 6, but I don't think it even airs in Japan until Monday or so ^_^* The woman who showed up in 5 looked weirdly like Gren, although I'm going to trust that Hige's amazing sense of smell can discern that it is indeed a female.

P.P.S.: Akabane is totally my favorite Getbackers character. I'm afraid he's going to end up being the betrayer, which would suck, largely because he's the obvious choice and I don't want the show to be obvious. But dang, there is just something downright loveable about a guy in black with a huge hat and a soft creepy voice who carves the letter J into people with scalpels.

The Big Offensive Rant! Whee!

Okay, I am going to come right out and say it, because it's something I've been realizing and struggling with for a long time.

Transgendered people bother me.

I am finally saying this here because I think I've finally started understanding why. I spent many years of my life wishing to be a boy, and feeling that I'd be happier as a boy. But I'm not, and I can deal. This is the body I was born with. I wish I had thinner thighs too, but I'm not going to go out and get a lipsuction. Artificially altering your body just isn't something I feel is right.

The problem with people - and this goes with pretty much ALL people, including me - is that they like to label. Someone is straight, or gay, or bi. They're male or female, and if they're a female who relates more to traditionally male things, or vice versa, they're often labeled "transgendered". And in all truth, this is pretty silly. Why can't they just be people who happen to like what they like and live how they want to live? During adolescence - which was when my desire to be a boy was so strong I got depressed a lot - I would sometimes go out of my way to like "boyish" stuff and to hate things that were "girly". But the truth is, the concept of masculinity and femininity is really just an illusion. And I think that people need to start feeling comfortable in the bodies they were born with, and to live their lives not worrying about what gender they're supposed to identify with.

I hope that made sense. ^_^* Only about three people read my weblog anyway, so I suppose it doesn't matter.

...I don't even know that song, but someone - Aaron probably - used to sing it or talk about it or something. Anyway, I had not one but two Stupid Anime Dreams last night, which is totally due to the fact that I was rewatching old Hale Nochi Guu episodes right before bed, and then spot checking my Wolf's Rain to see if it had downloaded.

The first dream was a Guu dream! I don't remember many details, except... that Clive-sensei and Weda had a baby. It was a girl, and blond somehow. (Uh-oh... maybe Asio was the real father...) I also remember that they ended up naming it something really, really stupid. Actually, I think Guu came up with the name, leading to a scene where everyone says "Oh, what a cute name!" but Hale is freaking out because it's actually a stupid name, and since he's the only sane person in the entire series he's the only one who notices. Unfortunately I don't remember what the name was, except that it started with a B.

Then I woke up, giggling about the dumb name. (I should have written it down!) And then I fell asleep again! This time I dreamt I was at my grandparents' house watching news about the Columbia shuttle. For some reason everyone was sitting around in their pajamas, and it was really, really late at night. Oh yeah, and I was a wolf. Like in Wolf's Rain. It was really odd; I don't know how I was a wolf when my family was human, but whatever. ^_^* And I was walking around on all fours and everything, but everyone saw me as human and didn't know. Dang, it was odd, but cool. And now... I finished my Asian Lit homework in about fifteen minutes, whoo! So maybe I'll watch some Wolf's Rain before class. ^_^ If I'm lucky I'll have Getbackers 14 sometime late tonight -_-

Ohhhhhh man.

Boy, what a week. Apparently the battery wasn't dead - it was loose. So my dad tightened it in and the car works again, although it's been going through oil like crazy and is most likely on its last legs. Great. It's times like this I REALLY wish I had more than a couple hundred dollars in the bank. Then this morning I woke up at 10:35, which is when I had planned on already being at school and studying for the Japanese test. Instead I jumped up, pulled on the first clothes I could grab (jeans from the floor, shirt from a laundry basket, and the first pair of socks my hands landed on - they have clouds on them) and dashed out the door. I managed to make it to class pretty much right at eleven, and the test wasn't all that bad, although it would've been a lot better if I'd had a chance to look over the grammar one more time beforehand like I'd planned.

Well, now I'm sitting in the computer lab two hours before my Psychology class. I HATE having this much time to kill! I'd start working on my Asian Lit homework, but I left the book in the car. Naturally. I also wish I had had time to put my contacts in, sigh. Oh well. Hopefully Getbackers 14 will be downloaded by the time I get home... Wolf's Rain 3 and 4 would be nice, too. But if not there's always more Azumanga Daioh.

I hope the new Getbackers ending is good. ^_^* I like Refrain, although I don't have the mad love for it like I had for Bokura no Boken, which got replaced by a really boring uninteresting song, sigh. And hopefully the new ending shows more characters than just whatshername and then three seconds of Ban and Ginji at the very end.

Ah yes, and Tsume from Wolf's Rain really is THE single sexiest anime man EVER. I know I said it already, but daaaamn. It's true. My burning attraction to him has probably doomed him already (although personality-wise I don't really think he's my favorite... yet. Hige and Toboe are a lot more likable.) Maybe some day I will also solve the mystery of how wolves can carry things. Everyone in the Bebop IRC chat seemed to think they actually transform into humans, but... that just isn't the impression I got, especially after the scene where Tsume tried to grab the falling kid and bit him on the shoulder instead. Whatever. ^_^* Tsume. Sexy. Yes. God, my brain is turning to mush just remembering him. He brings out the annoying fangirl in me, sigh.

Weekend lag

10:25 a.m.
A long weekend with Kathleen has left me sleep-deprived. We spent most of the time eating and watching things, including hentai that was bad in all the best ways. Also saw some Wolf's Rain, which has the sexiest guy ever in anime history (Tsume - too bad he's actually a wolf ^_^*) and watched Sense and Sensibility. Mmmm, Alan Rickman in poofy-sleeved shirts. It's a good look for him.

Today I will possibly be able to catch up on some sleep, since my car battery seems to have died. At least, I hope that's what it is. Nothing will turn on, including the headlights, so a dead battery would make sense. I should probably call my mom and tell her, because I will need a ride to work. Sigh. Time for napping and/or watching anime and/or playing Ragnarok all day.

The truth about MAKUBEX

Getbackers is getting downright awesome (I've now seen 11 episodes, or was that 12?) My favorite character is Akabane Kuroudo, whose last name means "red corpse". (His first name means "keeper of the imperial records" or something, which lead to some speculation over whether he might perhaps run a fanfic archive.) I don't know why he's my favorite - he's a creepy guy in black with a big hat who kills people with scalpels and is also called Dr. Jackal. He carves Js into the bodies of his victims, sort of like an evil Zorro. He's one of those Creepy Villains Who Smiles, but he just has a different personality than most smiling villains. I can't explain it.

Also in Getbackers is a mysterious guy named MAKUBEX. Except his name is pronounced "Makubesu", which sounds like "MacBeth". So I already know the truth about him, ha.

Going to class now to give a speech about an evil monkey. ("Anosaru wa totemo kakkoi hazu da!") Then to work. And then to visit Kathleen! Yay. Much fangirlishness will commence, I am sure. It's supposed to be warm and rainy this weekend. (Well, "warm" as in "40". It's sad that it was in the 20's the past few days and felt warm, but hey, it was 20 degrees warmer than it had been at the beginning of the week.)

So have you stopped to consider that maybe looking at KimahrixTidus yaoi is WHY you are now twitching and have chills? Just curious.

P.S.: Snow sucks.

Turns out I HAVE seen Gary Oldman (not to be confused with Gary Coleman) in something I remember: He was the leader of the evil Russian people in Air Force One, in which he constantly wavered on the line between being sexy and being scary as hell. I'm fairly happy with the casting, I think.

I forgot to mention in my blog yesterday that we went to see the Beauty and the Beast musical. It was so good! You know you're watching something good when you're grinning like an idiot the whole time. Gaston was especially great - he came across as a weird combination of Johnny Bravo and Gilderoy Lockhart. Heh. Then we came home to discover that something bizarre had been loaded onto the computer and it was constantly spewing popup ads. It seems to have stopped now, though, thank goodness... I was trying to watch an episode of Getbackers and would be interrupted every few minutes by popups. Arrgh.

Hey you - what're you doing next weekend? I don't have to work. ^_^ Hopefully there won't be horrible lake-effect snow or anything.

Oh yes, Getbackers. It's awesome. The somewhat silly fight scenes satisfy my inner 12-year-old, and the character interactions are just wonderful. If Ban and Ginji aren't sleeping together, they should be, dammit. I just hope the show doesn't ruin their dynamic by giving them love interests. I think Ban has too many brotherly/protective feelings for Himiko to be interested in her like that. I hope. ^_^*

Bah, I have to work at one, and have to allocate myself enough time to brush the piles of snow off my car... and I'm not dressed yet. So I think I will go.

Woo!

Sirius Black has been cast! He's being played by Gary Oldman, who unfortunately I know absolutely nothing about and haven't seen in anything! ^_^* Except "Bram Stoker's Dracula", but that was ages ago. I barely remember anything about that movie except that it had beheadings and Cary Elwes was in it. And I think they added an extra fiance for Lucy. Anyway, I may or may not have heard before Kathleen, but whatever, I'm happy that he's at least been cast. ^_^* His picture on the Internet Movie Database isn't bad-looking...

Weird dreams ahoy

12:29 p.m.
Well, last night I had some complicated Star Trek/Buffy crossover dream, and Kathleen was in it, but the only thing that I really remember (besides the fact that some woman in it got struck by lightning and vaporized at one point) is that Oz and I totally hooked up. And had puppies.

It's a bit disturbing in retrospect, but in the dream it was cute. ^_^* I was in color guard yet again in this one, and I took a few of the puppies with me and kept them in my locker. There were like six of them, so Oz and I would each look after half. Although keeping them in my locker was probably not the safest thing I could've done. Oh well.

The curse strikes again

Gaaaah. I've killed another favorite. This time it was in The Subtle Knife by Philip Pullman. I sort of have this vain hope that he isn't actually dead and will turn up in the third book, but... like I said, it's a vain hope ^_^* At least he died doing something cool and important. Blargh. I am so depressed right now it's stupid. Also I'm supposed to be reading the assignment for my Japanese History class but I am very unclear as to where it is. The library lists the book as being "in transit". Whatever that means. I looked in the reshelving areas and couldn't find it.

And I also haven't eaten anything yet today, which is a bad idea. ^_^* I want to spend as little money on food as possible, but skipping a meal means being hungry. There isn't really a happy medium, unfortunately.

Good news of the day: Mr. Yoshida gave me my recommendation. Now I'm almost set with my JCMU application, although I still need a new transcript and the Dean of Students to sign my application and my 500 word statement of purpose and to actually finish the application itself.

Wait a minute. I'm not close at all. -_- Sigh. Oh well, I'll work on it this week, although I also have to do my Japanese speech rough draft. (I'll try to do that tonight and tomorrow. I think I'm going to write a review of the Cowboy Bebop movie.)

Blah. (I name lots of entries "blah", I think.)

Man, I had to get up at eight this morning, and you might be sleeping still. Lucky. = / I hope you check this sometime during the day, because I want to bug you about making weekend plans. Consider yourself bugged.

Man, my room really needs a good cleaning. ^_^* Well, that'll have to wait until after work, because I should leave in ten or so minutes. Oh well. At least time passes more quickly when I have CDs to listen to.

Okay, I got my work schedule, and I have to work both Sunday and Monday, which is sort of a pain. What it means is basically that if you want to get together this weekend, you have to visit me, because me visiting you is just awkward and silly and would involve much driving back and forth. ^_^* So just try to let me know ASAP if/when you can come, and then we can watch more Yue - I mean, more Cardcaptor Sakura.

Bah, I should also be writing the speech rough draft for Japanese that's due Tuesday...

Whee, Patches had a weird anime dream! And so did I, although I don't remember it well. It started out as a marching band dream. I was in color guard, and our show apparently involved the color guard running around with model airplanes for some reason. But then it switched entirely to a Mahou Tsukai Tai! dream where I was Takeo. (Suddenly becoming anime characters is a weird thing, even for me.) I don't remember the plot very well except that all of the Magic Users' Club was staying in one big room somewhere, and we all had beds with our names on them lined up in a row. My bed was on one end and Aburatsubo's on the other. ^_^* But then there was this magazine or something with pictures of goblins in it, and for some reason I was convinced that the goblins were going to come alive and eat me, so I crawled in bed with Aburatsubo, who (amazingly) kept his hands to himself. And the goblins DID come alive, but I don't remember what they did after that, which is sort of too bad.

Man, the phrase "get back" starts getting pretty weird grammatically when you try using it in different ways. Anyway, I love Lucius, but I love these boys too, and all their weird super powers. I also love making layouts. ^_^* I have a weird feeling I'm going to be blogging a lot now that I have lots of boring at-school free time, too...

This is a somewhat more "traditional" layout for me - I was feeling the need for something colorful and upbeat, and these guys fit the bill. The dark-haired one with the glasses is Ban and the blond one is Ginji, and they're the title characters in the new anime series GetBackers, which Kathleen introduced me to very recently. I've only seen three episodes but so far I'm really enjoying the characters, humor, and somewhat silly action sequences. I'm looking forward to seeing more! Title from the Cowboy Bebop song of the same name. It really has nothing to do with the show, but at least it worked to get the Beatles song "Get Back" out of my head.
