| this update's gonna be short, because i have two assignments due tomorrow, one of which is a 5 page paper i've barely started. so here's what i've got: looks like the posies can't stay broken up. that's good news for power-pop fans. and: the white stripes, who'll be playing at noisepop later next month, suck. looks like retro-garage is becoming the third-wave ska of the new millennium, and as with the previous fad, there are about two bands that get it right and a whole mess 'a bandwagoners. so do your part: keep a clean scene and just say no to trendy rehash. |

| couple new items today. one, for all of you out there who enjoy the art of advertising more than the graceless and brutal art of the pigskin-chase, get thee to adcritic. they've got every commercial shown during the superbowl's ad breaks, in your choice of quicktime or windows media. especially recommended for high-bandwidth connections. the other piece of news is simply this: music freeloaders, your days are numbered. (link respectfully jacked from new york london paris munich.)
last night i dreamt that the pixies were going on a reunion tour in march with superchunk supporting. only thing was, kim deal wasn't down with the plan, so presumably they were gonna enlist the services of a new bassist. (the dream was notably unclear on that point.) but i was an insider to all this info, so i got to post it first on my blog. yeah, i know, it's pretty goddamn lame, but i'd betcha dollars to donuts every blogger who's been doin' it for longer than a couple months has had a similar dream. whatever. so i got 7 cds yesterday, and i'll be sharing my thoughts on them as well as commenting on vh1's strange frequency sometime soon. |

| those of you who were musically sentient during the mid-90s may remember the trip-hop meets alt-rock stylings of ruby, the solo vehicle for ex-pigface and silverfish vocalist lesley rankine. the project's minor radio hits included "tiny meat" and "paraffin." well apparently miss rankine's back with some new ish for 2k1. just hit the website to preview the new album and the chance to remix some of the raw tracks for display on the site. for initiates, ruby's basically garbage with more incisive lyrics and fewer overt pop aspirations. if you haven't heard the debut album salt peter, may i suggest you rectify that problem circa now?? |

| more revelations: i just found out there's a japanese rock band called "deen." sort of odd when you consider that my name is the arabic word for "keeper of the traditions," and as far as i know it doesn't have any secondary meanings. the band completely sucks though, sounding like a japanese sublime with cheezy roland melodies and manufactured beats. like most jpop groups, they borrow liberally from western musical forms to produce a pathetically derivative and unoriginal end product. i'd post a link here, but i'd hate to waste y'all's time. remember, i'm the blogger who cares!
also, i previewed the latest crooked fingers record on cdnow yesterday, and for better or worse, on first listen it sounds like more of the same. more downtempo, drum-machine driven character sketches delivered in bachmann's world-weary drawl, still the perfect soundtrack for a night spent face-down in the gutter. and yeah, he still uses various forms of the word "drunk" liberally. so if you couldn't get enough of the debut, wolf 359 sez run out and pick up bring on the snakes.
there's a chance i might go to the record store tomorrow, so i might post some reviews soon. so keep obsessively checking this page; i'm sure it's more fun than whatever it is you're supposed to be doing. |

| yeah, i know. all you readers out there think i'm an indie-rock stud, what with all the shows and solo projects and band participation. but the truth is, i feel very alone in my musical preferences here at stanford. unwound is playing at the bottom of the hill on february 1st, but i'm not going because going to shows alone is so boring when you don't know the band well. i've been told indie rock fans exist here at stanford, but somehow they've all managed to avoid becoming my friends. odd when you consider what a fucking cool guy i am; i mean, am i right or what? personally i've found the whole "scene" to be a very cold and uninviting community, and that closed-door stigma probably contributes to its lack of popularity. i realize my experiences are perhaps more representative of my aloof social persona than of indie rock fans in general, but allow me to suggest that you, as a reader, be accepting of anyone who expresses interest in you or your music. i mean shit: they might actually turn out to be halfway interesting.
so, do you guys go in groups or alone? when i'm home, i can enlist members of lurve to accompany me to shows, but here i end up hanging out solo. none of my friends have ever heard of the bands i like (except the big ones, like the pixies, sonic youth, portishead, that kinda thing). and it sucks to bring non-fans to shows because usually they end up standing there for 3 or 4 hours wishing they were doing something else. so for all you high schoolers out there, i just want to say: if you care about indie rock at all, go to a (large) state school. most private schools have no scene to speak of; i know stanford sure as hell doesn't. you'll have a better time than i'm having, musically speaking.
and to all you stanford motherfuckers reading this page, fuck all y'all. damn! that felt good. |
