I've always been afraid of TOO many job offers. I don't like turning people down, especially when I'M the one that asked for the job. I'm more desperate than them 9 times out of 10.

Knowing that everyone reads the internet and things are easily searched, I'll keep this vague.

I've got two jobs right now. They both have nothing to do with my degree. Job A I've had for a few months and pays $1 more an hour than job B, which I've been working at for 1 week. I need them both to make rent. OR I could start working basically full time at job A, making it very hard to change my schedule if a job ever comes up in my degree, or if any more P.A. jobs come up. I would still work weekends and be off Tuesday and Thursday.
Job B is far easier, considering it's only $1 an hour less. It's basically stress free and will likely lead to something video related. It is temporary though, and supposedly will end in about 2 months. So I can't get more hours there because it still will end within the same number of hours over a shorter period of time.

Job B leads me to a very likely Job C which is photoshop work, really easy an $10 and hour. But I can't have Job C without Job B because they are in the same office and I can't be like "I quit! I'll see you Monday."

There is also a Job D that I've been promised for a while now, which IS in my field, but hasn't actually happened yet and it's been 2 months or more. But it's still the best job I can have if I ever get it.
There's also a Job E which may come from being added to a listing at a Adobe Products/Video/Web temp agency which I test for on Friday. That would also get me a job in my field, but is nothing set in stone yet. It would possibly get my a job better than Job D, but at the very least comparable.

So I have two hypothetical best jobs, one hypothetical better job, and 2 actual not very good jobs. One I can't quit because it's connected to the "better" job, and one I can't quit at the moment because it's the only permanent, never ending job, which happens to be short staffed.

Here I go to put some stuff in boxes.

I got a part time, two month job putting flat irons and things into boxes for an online company.

The guy from the production company I've been following is back in town so time to give him another call to get in on that promised job from 2 months ago.

Another Pixar job taken a month after I applied. I realize applying to Pixar is probably a stretch, but there's no way they hire only professionals because it's an end of the line/you'll probably never quit type career place. I applied for a Production Assistant job. No one who has been in the business for 20 years is going to apply to be a PA. The only people that will DO IT are people just starting.

Likely it's because I don't live in California, but then don't ask me on the application if I'm willing to relocate. Fuck, I should just put my Aunt and Uncle from Cali's address on the application.

Well we just did the 24 Hour Film Fest. It was not as fun and I don't like the film as much. I think we might not even be in the screening again for some unknown reason. Hurrah.

My sure thing job continues to give me the "Call back Monday" response. They're swamped, which I believe. Last Monday when I called there were about 5 different things playing loudly in the background and the guy even had to say "hang on" and go stop some playback. But even if they're all busy, it seems like I could have solved some of the congestion by having been hired a month ago when I interviewed.

The other job I'm following was from a recommendation of me to them a friend of mine who did some work for them gave to them. I called and she said she had sent my examples of work to the video guy and to call back a few days later after he had a chance to look at it. So I call back the day she told me to and she's out of the office. Two days later, she's still or agian out of the office. Why give me a specific day to call back and then not be there?

The main location is at YouTube.

Then we have it at Revver which pays you for views. Watch the video (Or scroll to the end if you've already seen it) and click on the ad at the end. It's usually just at ad to another page or Revver.

Then we have it at MetaCafe, which also pays for views. All you have to do is watch it..

The Body In Burlap - Watch the best video clips here

But if you watch it once, watch it on YouTube. It looks the best I think (despite Revver's screencap looking WAY better than the other two), and I honestly care about a giant view count on YouTube more than the chump change we'll get for views on either of the other sites. But if you're willing to support the cause, the chump change will go towards rent on our studio or some decent mics or something.

Every day I write at least 2 emails that require a reply. I'm waiting on so many unreplied-to emails right now, it's depressing.

Half a dozen jobs from Craig's List, a few actual job listing jobs, an email from the job from like a month ago now that I said the interview for went very well. (That was an understatement. They gave me the "You've got the job, we'll call you on Monday." and when I called back they were still waiting on scripts to be ok-ed to start working and hiring.)
Responses from some people I sent the movie to, famous people that I have listed on Myspace. Updated imdb information, responses from friends I haven't talked to in years... etc etc.
And each new day I don't get ANYTHING responded to.. well is another day closer to me living at my parents' house at the very least.

The video is up (as of yesterday) and already with 173 views!

The Body in Burlap

Woo!

Also, I've applied to a PA job at Pixar now. One day I'll work there... one day.

Current job status: Sushi for < 20hours a week = Can't pay my rent! I otherwise remain jobless.

What an odd thing: "Horn Guy"

Actually I saw this because someone posted on their blog that my Library video reminded them of it.

Oh, it seems the Grand Prize for winning nationally is $7500!
Fiddlesticks.

Well we're not the only ones who were deemed late. There were 19 teams. I'm told 3 did not submit anything, and only 10 are eligible to compete. So 6 teams total were late. And actually, when we turned ours in, they said they were waiting on one more team, and there was one team they just never heard from. So 4 or 5 other teams submitted on time and then had to fix some technical error later and were made late by default.

Tuesday, June 19, 2007 07:15 p.m.
The 48hours are up (well they have been for a while, but I'm still recovering). Our genre was horror and I think we created something pretty good. We ended up submitting at about 7:23 when it was due at 7:30 on Sunday night. Unfortunately though, there was an error in the burn so that one scene had no audio and we had to fix it and resubmit. That meant we were late and can't compete for the official prize of a city win and some equipment rentals. I didn't really care about the rental, but when you win the city they then gather all the city winners and have another screening and competition for national winner. Then they take that winner to real fests like Cannes.
We're still able to win audience awards though, so that's cool.

It took me 21 hours to edit it, and then like 2 and a half more to fix a few things before we resubmitted. (Apparently I missed a glaring sound error though... that sucks.) I started at 10pm on Saturday and edited non-stop until 7pm Sunday. It was quite fun and stressful. I didn't get to utilize all the ideas I had, but I will when I fix it up some more and post it online in a few days. Julia wrote some awesome music for it, and we even had a production company logo animation made. There are a few scenes with some questionable audio, but we had no sound person and there was little I could do to save it in the time we had. That's something to fix this coming week as well.

The screening is on Wednesday at 8:30 at the Times.

Tuesday, June 12, 2007 03:31 p.m.
This is the kind of bullshit I've been dealing with for the last 6 months.
Most of the jobs I've applied to have had no response at all, undoubtedly because I'm just out of college and they don't want to deal with a "beginner," despite my having a good 7 or 8 years of experience and a reel that displays talent whether or not it's in the right genre.

But for the jobs I HAVE gotten reponses from, they would like me to work for free. (This is all except the one I just interviewed for, which was for a guy who knows exactly how the business treats people and is pissed too.) Or something like... "Edit this thing, here's 20 bucks for your effort."

Here's an example from ProductionHub, a website of crew and equipment lists for people to get into contact with:

The job is titled Assistant Editor/Intern and it's for New York.

Seeking a student or someone starting out in editing, who has their own editing suite we can use.

You will gain invaluable experience learning by watching and assisting a seasoned editor work on a documentary piece for entry in next year's Sundance.

Would be from early August until end of Sept.

Credit on film, copy, and lunches provided.

Now, someone who is just starting out is not going to have their own suite. And if they happen to have just bought some equipment, it's probably in their bedroom or something... But on top of that, the company would like to USE that person's suite, and then the person who owns it would stand behind the "real" editor "gaining invaluable experience". Their payment gets to be credit on the film and lunches. The lunches are probably just from the person's kitchen. "Editor: Pick yourself up a little something from the fridge, on me."

So basically, they would like to "hire" someone so that they can use their editing station, while the person who owns it stands around and doesn't get paid for their skills.
Not only is that the most ludicrous thing I've ever heard and no one in their right mind would do it, but the company should actually pay the "intern" for renting their editing suite.

Tomorrow I'm supposed to hear about the job I just interviewed for.

Damn.. it feels like 1am already.

Wednesday, June 6, 2007 05:42 p.m.
Had an interview today with a local production company. It went really well.

Monday, June 4, 2007 03:30 p.m.
Yay, Creature Comforts debutes in the US tonight on CBS at 8/7c.

Wednesday, May 30, 2007 08:04 p.m.
Oh and if you ever go to a Marcus theater for a movie and get there early enough for commercials and previews, the AT&T Silence your Cellphones preview I worked on is playing now. We shot it during the AJ Hawk AT&T Home Turf shoot. He's featured in the Silence your Cellphone thing.

I'm also in the clip, in the very front row on the far left (Looking at the screen), mostly blurred out. I've got curly orangish hair and am wearing my red jean jacket.

|

Monday, May 28, 2007 12:45 p.m.
Uh.. apparently one of the other stations had filled their job early May and just still had the listing up.

And I guess I don't have to worry about turning down the CBS job for lack of money because they didn't offer me the job.
I'm a winner!

|

Thursday, May 17, 2007 06:39 p.m.
Well the interview went alright. The guy seemed kind of nervous to be giving the interview and/or afraid of my talkative bubbliness. Which.. if you know me, you know can't be overbearing because I'm not a talkative bubbley person to start. I don't know.. maybe from the outside I'm just hyper and nervous and dorky sounding. But generally people respond to my friendliness when I'm in an interview.

Long story short, I'm not actually sure if it can pay the bills, even if I take the 3:30 am, 5 days a week shift that was offered.

|

Monday, May 14, 2007 11:31 p.m.
I have an interview for the local CBS station on Thursday. It's still not an editing job, but a production crew job, which is still pretty neat.

|

Friday, May 11, 2007 11:44 p.m.
I think it's safe to say that sense there's only about 20 days before the editing internship at Pixar that I didn't get it... Bleh.

I do have a part-time job at a sushi food place. While it's not quite getting me the most out of my film degree, I do get lots and lots of free breads, pastries, and sushi.

|

Thursday, May 3, 2007 02:59 p.m.
No Aardman job for me. I hope at least I didn't get onto the shortlist of interviewees because they'd have to drop $600 to get me there, instead of because I'm not qualified :(

|

Monday, April 30, 2007 12:51 p.m.
Oh yeah, I also applied for a "Production Assosciate" job at ABC and a PA job at Nickelodeon Studios.

|

Sunday, April 29, 2007 11:22 a.m.
I've sent applications and resumes to both Pixar and Aardman (Wallace and Gromit). An editing internship for Pixar, an in-house PA job for Aardman. They're long shots for both, but I'm excited about them anyway. I should hear from them in a few weeks I think. Aardman studios is in Bristol, England and Pixar is in Emeryville, California, just northeast of San Francisco I think.

Otherwise locally I'm in direct contact with a few production companys for jobs, have sent out close to 50 resumes inquiring about jobs to the rest of the production companies and ad-agencies in Milwaukee and surrounding, and have answered a few recent Craig's List ads for both Milwaukee and New York.

Basically the same stuff I've been doing for the last 4 months now. I continue to be excited about the Pixar and Aardman jobs though. I'm not rejected yet!
