football365 has a Sportonair audio interview with Henry sounding distraught after yesterday. you should know why. click [here].
Valencia 1 Arsenal 0 and I cried after reading the match report. To go out at this stage to something beyond mathematics hurts more than simply and clearly losing could. On the bright side it was Scum40 yesterday. meh. sorry. not in a good state of mind now.
Interesting possible combination - from Calciomercato: "Marseille is not the only side interested in Juventus' David Trezeguet. In fact, Arsenal made an inquiry as well, English papers write. And it seems as if it was coach Arsene Wenger who asked the club to contact the player. The dream of the coach is to have Henry-Trezeguet upfront. The two already play with France."
from arsenal.com: "Thanks to the Kanu Nwankwo Heart Foundation, 15 lucky fans have the chance of joining Arsenal stars for a slap up meal in central London, amongst them Thierry Henry. Contact Paul Okoye on 020 7924 0709 and make your best bid for a truly memorable night out. All proceeds are in aid of the Kanu Heart Foundation which works tirelessly to provide heart operations to children with heart defects."
Arsenal 0 Middlesborough 3 two own goals. ouch. one or two comments that Henry was distinctly pissed off by refereeing decisions but would have done better directing his anger at getting the small round object into the goal. still, we get a chance to kick Spanish arse tomorrow (no offense, amigo) when we take on Valencia away in the CL. actually a draw would be enough, but Arsenal do not go into a game looking for a draw; we load the guns and fire. of course getting them on aim is the hard part.
and guess what? tomorrow is SCUM 40 day. yes it is. you know what to do.
Man City 0 Arsenal 4 in a game where Henry was rested and, according to PA Sports: "...should have added a fifth when Kanu found (him) lurking at the far post but he somehow contrived to fire his effort wide." so do the journos add up on the RHX hitlist.
Henry talks about the FA cup in a brief arsenal.com article [read].
Arsenal 2 Spurs 1: hello Liverpool. Vieira and Pires scored, with noggin and foot respectively. Off to Cardiff we go. Pre-FA semi articles with Henry from arsenal.com
arseonline, and FAsemi fallout.
Arsenal 2 Valencia 1, Henry scored the first goal from a Vieira pass and half a minute later Parlour whumped in a fantastic drive from 25 yards.
The photo archive is test running on ehoste.com at roihenryxiv.
Arsenal 2 Spurs 0, from Pires [70] and Henry [87]. Henry straining hard for a goal all match, well done.
no this is not a joke. gooner agneis quinn had the following information (much good it'll do now, but here's what we have):
"I was lonely at first," he says, explaining that he used to be able to get the train back to his hotel in St Albans wearing full Arsenal kit and not get mobbed by fans. Not so any more. He drives an unspecified luxury car and has a devoted Highbury following.
Speaking of countrymen with Arsenal ties, Henry says that Nicholas Anelka still has a soft-spot for the club and identifies Sylvain Wiltord as a well-meaning dressing-room "nutter". He is bashful when asked about love but bold when asked about the forthcoming semi-final clash against Glenn Hoddle's Spurs.
"I don't want to be arrogant or anything but they have to be scared of us - not us scared of them - because it is going to be like the final of the World Cup for them."
That is a match scenario Thierry Henry knows only too well.
France 1 Spain 2; Raul must be happy. According to arsenal.com, "Thierry played the full 90 minutes but was unable to score as France's 10-game unbeaten run came to an end thanks to goals from Ivan Helguera and Fernando Morientes. Thierry supplied the pass from which David Trezeguet pulled back a late consolation for France."
France 5 Japan 0: Henry scored the second goal in the 14th minute, getting the ball in right under the Japanese goalkeeper's sliding body.
Bayern 1 Arsenal 0 but we're playing Valencia and Henry has something to say about that [read]. Henry came on as a substitute against Aston Villa last Saturday, the theory being that he's knackered. The game nevertheless ended 0-0.
Arsenal 1 Spartak Moscow 0: The fallout from this game is the highest I have ever seen. Henry scored the winning goal in the 82nd minute after much tension. Someone took off their shirt. I mention this because March nights can be awful cold. Looked like Goofy Pires. On to the fallout.
ANR has swallowed its earlier remarks about Henry most happily [read]. Henry also talks about qualification for the CL on the arsenal.com website [read].
Footballnews: After the game Henry was critical of his own contribution, saying: "Before the goal I was a bit upset about my performance because the team was doing very well and obviously when you play forward you have to finish the opportunities. I missed an easy one and I was so upset about that... Perhaps scoring with my head today was the only way to score because I wasn't as easy with the ball as usual. I didn't want to finish the game on a 0-0. For once I scored with my head and I really wanted to score that goal. Today we had to win and it was very important for us."
ZOO Football's article The Guilt Of King Henry, written by Mark Oliver, includes the following:
"The goal was for Dennis. He didn't deserve to go off. I did. I wanted to score a goal for him. For some reason the boss left me on the pitch and for that, for Dennis, the boss and for the fans, I wanted to score. I wanted to give something back. I didn't give anything apart from the goal but sometimes that is enough. You have to be honest with yourself.
"When Dennis went off and the crowd wasn't happy about it, it was a bit strange for me because I felt, like, guilty. I thought it would be me. When I did score I was thinking about him. He was on the bench when it went in and I was on the pitch. But he deserved to stay on because he was all over the place."
From Sportal: Wenger said, "Sometimes I make the right decisions and even though Thierry was not having the best night he was always a threat... Maybe it wasn’t one of his best games but I felt that we still needed a physical presence up front, and he was still the one who created the chances. Finally he got the goal and that showed that chances are not always mathematical. We had to take a chance and put three strikers on and even though Dennis played well I felt it would be too dangerous to keep four on. I have to make the decisions and do what is good for Arsenal."
Negative-worrying ANR article on Henry.
p.s. the unofficial TH infosite, roi henry xiv, will be up and running by this weekend. no one can shut us down forever.
In the friendly France 1 Germany 0 game yesterday [Tuesday 27th February], Henry was a substitute and kept the German defense busy during the second half, in fact occupying them so nicely Zidane got a goal.
Arsenal 1 Lyon 1: Not a good game for Henry in most opinions; he might have been better off resting for tomorrow's match against Man Utd.
RTM2 is screening the Arsenal-ManUtd game live at 8.35 p.m. Malaysian time.
Arsenal 3 Chelsea 1: Henry converted a penalty into a goal - which is really how they should teach unit conversion in physics - and 'needlessly' got involved in the confrontation between the sides. Wiltord scored the other two. Massive Gallic celebration.
Olympique Lyon 0 Arsenal 1: hey, we're winning away. Henry nodded in a header on 59 from an Ashley Cole cross. That boy gets better every day. Both of them.
Henry came on for Lauren to score the only goal in the Arsenal 1 Ipswich 0 game. Wenger said: "I didn't want to play Thierry because he has had an ankle injury and he only resumed training on Wednesday. He was desperate to play, though, and he showed what a vital player he is when he came on."
arsenal.com reports Henry's Nike Shox commercial with stills from the claymation ad. the ad itself can be viewed at nike.com. click on the Shox ad (thanks Marta).
[aside, the comp is still dead. sorry for the irregularity of updates.]
Arsenal 2 Bradford 0 and bits and pieces from ANR: "Thierry Henry took a swing at the cross in the inside left position, well inside the area, missed the ball completely, and fell backwards by way of apology to Cole and the crowd... Thierry tried a 25 yard sidefooter that was plain silly, the kind of shot you try from 15 yards. Then Cole was far too late with an obvious pass down the channel to Henry, who was very pissed off that the ball did not come sooner... Henry caught the ball on his foot and juggled it four times before passing backwards to a team-mate. A preposterous bit of skill which earned warm applause."
Leicester 0 Arsenal 0 despite all the activity in the second half from Henry and Wiltord, the latter just barely denied a lovely solo effort.
Arsenal 1 Chelsea 1: Goofy scored, Bluescum returned, Henry nearly upped his quota of magic goals but didn't. Not the best of years.
Strangely my computer senses this, and has decided to fall into depression and develop bad clusters. Updates suspended until repairs done. Sorry.
Carlisle 0 Arsenal 1 from a Sylvain Wiltord goal; Henry was sidelined by his injury. He has been voted best player in English football based on his 2000 performance by MATCH magazine [details].
In two football365 articles, Henry talks about the title chase [read] and Fabien Barthez [read]. Henry also said: "I want to win trophies with my team. Of course I am quite happy with being voted the French player of the year, but the main thing in my head now is to win something with Arsenal. I want to give my best for my team. Some people are liking what I'm doing on the pitch but I really just want to win things."
Henry's first Premiership hattrick is available on Realplayer thanks to Arsenal World:
Henry speaks to BBC London Live: "It's frustrating when I have to see Manchester United far away from us all the time. It would be so nice to catch them because the fans would be happy and it would be nice for the whole country as Manchester United are always so far away and it's never that interesting to see. We have to try our best because it's a bit boring all the time with Manchester United always being in front. If you ask anyone in the country whether United will win each Saturday, everyone has to say 'yes'."
The Irish Independent News Service released a positive article on Henry last week [read]. He voices some interesting perspectives.
The Carling stats, issued to reporters before the Liverpool game, included the following :
Player with the most shots : Thierry Henry (69)
Excerpt from Myles Palmer's writings on ANR: "Meanwhile, Thierry Henry is still hopping mad that some hack said he is not a natural goalscorer [see ike's page on arseonline] . Brian Marwood said on Sky that, 'Henry in that mood is almost unstoppable.'
"This humble hack admires the ten years of work that have taken Thierry from where he was to where he is now, trusts he doesn’t stop being a nice guy, wants to see him in that mood more often, and hopes he will score with a header on Saturday.
"The guy SHOULD score hat-tricks. With his skills, pace and jumping ability, Thierry Henry should score three hat-tricks every season. He should also score more goals away from home, but he cannot do that if the team is not playing well. He should be aiming to score Arsenal’s winning goal in the final of the Champions League in 2001 and 2002 and 2003."
@FC the electronic arsenal fanzine reviews Henry's performance: "Golden days for him. The way he’s playing at the moment is the kind of stuff you tell your grandchildren about. Don’t go along with all that press bollocks that Thierry is underachieving. Most journalists never actually go to the games so they never see any of the off the ball stuff ie. running, feinting, drawing people off, so most of the pissed up, tabloid idiots have never seen Henry in full flight. Every club on the planet is gagging for him."
Charlton 1 Arsenal 0: Henry did not play this game but will definitely be pissed at the result, hopefully pissed enough to go on a storming run for the rest of the season.
[from Marta] Henry and the other French players of Arsenal, as well as Silvinho and Ljungberg, visited the Free Royal Hospital recently to spread Christmas cheer.
Arsenal 2 Sunderland 2 thanks to Kevin Philips who, Arsenal fan or not, goes on the hate-for-a-week list. Ditto that McCann fella. Henry tortured the Sunderland defense for most of the first half but was subbed at 79 minutes for new boy Tomas and will miss the Charlton game tomorrow after the ankle injury he picked up while giving Sunderland keeper Sorenson heart attacks. Paddy Vieira and Lee Dixon, incidentally not part of our GBP35million strike force, got the goals.
Sky Sports reports that Paddy Vieira and Henry are on the verge of
committing their long-term futures to Arsenal. Arsene Wenger said: "The talks are going well with Thierry and Patrick and I think we will try to finalise the agreements by the end of January."
On the other hand Soccernet says that Paddy and Henry will leave the club if Wenger does when his contract expires in 2002.
Feedback from Leicester match - football365.com articles [read1] and [read2].
France Football named Henry France Footballer Of The Year, even over the great Zinedine Zidane. Full article to come.
Liverpool 4 Arsenal 0: nobody likes stuff like this. But c'est la vie. On a brighter note, Henry worried Liverpool's defence on the left, supported by Fredrik Ljungberg, and was noted by some as one of the brighter sparks of the match, which however would best be left behind. I mean, it's Christmas, put on the Barry White albums and forget it for three days.
Another Gooner's opinion on Henry's performance: "Henry is getting more and more frustrating, it is as if he refuses to go after the ball if it’s not coming his way from a teammate or within three yards. When he tries though, it always gets dangerous. I read an interview with Thierry’s old coach, who said that when Tel came to Monaco Wenger needed to give Henry a kick up the backside, because apart from sudden bursts of brilliance, he used to just walk around on the pitch not doing anything. And by the looks of it, Wenger, take aim!"
Gerard Houllier warns his players ahead of the Arsenal-Liverpool clash today: "Thierry is a very dangerous and quick striker. He is very mobile and has plenty of movement up front. He can score goals, right foot, left foot, and he has improved a lot I think in the past two years. He's a world champion, a European champion, and as everyone knows I have known him for a very long time and he's a very gifted player."
Football365.com article [read] in which Henry pointificates on the effects of ManUre lacking a sunny Christmas holiday this season. Arsenal World has a Real clip of Henry's goal from the Bayern home game way back [watch].
Henry landed fourth in this year's European Footballer of the Year poll organised by 'France Football' magazine. The 'Golden Ball' is voted for by France's top journalists, and Henry came in behind Luis Figo, Zinedine Zidane and Rivaldo. The Gunners striker recently landed seventh place in a World Player Of The Year poll held by FIFA.
