Wednesday, September 13, 2000 01:24 p.m. Ooops. Forgot to update yesterday. Not much was up though. Had a fencing meeting that lasted about five minutes. Went to my first Japanese class of the term. It was interesting. I found out that my intonation needs work, and I need to pay attention to what I'm reading. I kept saying "itsu" when it shoulda been "ikutsu." Such a naughty student... Anyway, homework and ignoring homework was the focus of the day. I'm still not playing Chrono Cross...I suddenly realized how much Japanese stuff I have to prepare for tomorrow. x_x What the hell was I thinking reviewing this many kanji in two weeks?
I had this horrible dream this morning about giant black widow spiders, and something about being in the old Marion Hy-Vee looking for giant (taller than me) bottles of water. Scary when you think about that... Speaking of which, I found this "Symptom Checker" online last night. I sometimes have random chest pain, so I clicked on that, answered some of the questions. Turns out I should be rushed to the hospital because one of my lungs may have collapsed. O_o; Riiiiiight. I wonder how long one can live with one collapsed lung. Certainly not for 3 or more years... ^^; Goes to show how much better it is to see a doctor than diagnose yourself. Unless it's a sinus infection. I can always tell with those. Owari.

Monday, September 11, 2000 10:25 p.m. I wouldn't believe it if I didn't feel it myself: cold air blowing in through my window! Hooray! Finally it's going to be cooler. Ack... I've been suffering on the fourth floor of my unairconditioned, poorly ventilated dorm room for the past week, and this is a very welcome change. I trudged around in the heat today from place to place. Had another Japanese art history class. Such a yummy class. Not that we've had anything but reading so far, but hey. Homework, homework everywhere. Pretty boring stuff, but required. I have an evil kanji quiz tomorrow. I studied for it. I'm not ready for it. But I studied for it nonetheless. Had first night of choir too. Fun! My conductor looks strangely like Mark Hamill. Well, somewhat anyway. (Er...Luke Skywalker to those who haven't paid attention. ^^)
Hmm. I found a cat hair on my keyboard. O.o As you can plainly see, not much else is up. Tomorrow more classes and stuff and stuff. Such a wonderful life. *hears a bell ringing* O_o; Okie then... I really need to get back to playing Chrono Cross. People have been posting spoilers in SMU forum (and not marking them as such >_<) so I've been itching to play. Unfortunately due to those posts I've discovered a tad or two I shouldn't have, but I clicked away before anything major hit home. Maybe I'll play tomorrow. I hope so...

Sunday, September 10, 2000 11:39 a.m. O_o I'm so lazy about updating my pita, aren't I? Oh well. Friday was of course filled with my fun Lit class. Our professor talked a bit more than I was happy with. It's really interesting and stuff, but I know the rest of us have stuff to say too. I know I did, and it was burning a hole in my tongue. Friday before class was just filled with random homework and eating in the Gizmo. Turkey bagel sandwhich...mmmm... Saturday I finally got to sleep late, but still the time I slept only totalled 8 hours anywayz. Zannen.
Saturday afternoon was filled with more homework and attempts at homework. I did manage to finish my art history reading and start on my next novel. I hope I can finish the book by Tuesday so I can write the essay for it over a couple of days, but I'm not sure if that's going to happen. Saturday night was spent downing food at Steak and Shake. It's not as bad as some would have us believe. Far tastier than the caf. I love their turkey clubs and cookie's and cream shakes. I swear though, quality in service is dropping everywhere so much while the price just inches up. What's up with THAT, she asked. After dinner we hung at Courtney's watching two halves of two movies while we waited for one of her friends to call. Eventually we found someone else to bring to the movie--The Cell. It was pretty good. Many of the visuals were really stunning and some were even yummy. It was about a woman who can go into the minds of people using this machine. She's been using it for therapy, but then when the FBI catches this horrible serial killer (now in a coma) she goes into his mind to try and help him and to find information on where his latest victim is being held. After the movie I tried to stay up and watch Matt play Legend of Dragoon, but I couldn't keep my eyes open. So it was bed time.
Today is the Carnival of Clubs and a picnic I'm going to attend. Gonna last for awhile too...I wonder when I'll be finishing my homework? Ahh, well, it'll get done somehow. Sometime. Before class. Yeah, that's the ticket... And btw, love the banner! :D

Thursday, September 7, 2000 09:10 p.m. Much was afoot today. First day of classes and all that. They only one I had was my Japanese art history class. In a word: SUGOOOOOI. Well, not only do we get to learn about Japanese art history, but the professor is going to show us Akira Kurosawa movies. One's part of an assignment, but he also said that he would show us more on our own time for fun if we were interested. The other funky thing about that class is we get to visit a real tea house at the University of Illinois during November. Hmmm...kneeling Japanese style in November. ^^ I know it will be well worth it though. Japanese language starts on Tuesday. Already I've begun the Great Kanji Review aka the I Forgot HOW Much Over the Summer?! Seminar. Why am I learning more this year when I really need to do the last 300 over again in the first place? @_@ There is much to be said for year round schooling. I'm not saying much though...
I finally got my room decorated. I put up some pictures and such. I found some interesting ones in my pile. I tried to make juice popcicles today, but they aren't freezing. Tomorrow's my lit class. I did finally finish rereading that book (In the Lake of the Woods). It's such an interesting one at that. I'm really intrigued by the book. I'm not sure why. A bulk of it is about trying to vanish reality. Like if a horror or something icky happens in your life that you just don't want to think about, you just "vanish" it--make it disappear from your memory and act like it never happened. I've realized by reading that I've done that sometimes in my life. Not that I've done really horrible things! The stuff the main character vanished in the book was stuff like being a Vietnam war criminal, spying on his girlfriend and father, the suicide of his father, his father's verbal abuse, and the like. I think that many of my things I've vanished were instances of stupidity and embarassment. I dunno. I tend to feel incredibly guilty over even the smallest things, but sometimes only certain things. O_o; Yeah. It really helps me that the book asks the questions "was [the main character] a monster? Or just a simple human being?" and then never answers the question. The author just leaves it at that. Aside from my psychological self-evaluations not much else is up. Back to that great Book o' Kanji I guess. We love it, don't we? ^^; We must...
Random Celestial Thought OTD: "He said...HawksEye and VanGogh?! Eh?! Well, that may explain the tutu."
Wednesday, September 6, 2000 02:39 p.m. Well, I'm back at college once again, and somehow things just keep rolling down hill from there. I think it's probably all due to Knox's budget cuts. Do you know just how many things I've encountered in my first two days here that are very broken or very dirty? Too many! I'm sure everything will be settled down by next week though. I'm still having a good time thus far. Classes start tomorrow. Japanese art clas--yum! My other two classes (as we only take 3 at a time here) are Japanese independent study and Modern and Contemporary Fiction. Unfortunately our first class meeting for Lit. is Friday night from 7:30-11:30. -.-; Nice way to spend a Friday night, ne? At least I enjoyed the book we're going to be discussing. Which reminds me--I still need to finish taking notes on that...I'm still working out the finer details of my independent study. I have to hand all this stuff into the registrar by Friday.
Yesterday consisted of hauling all my crap up four flights of steps (no, no elevators ~_~) and then arranging it and my room. God bless the Knox bunkbeds. XP I still haven't finished decorating yet. Then I ran off to find Matt and Courtney. We hung about and ate at a new (and incredibly tasty) Chinese restaurant. I also realized that too many Chinese buscuits make me very silly and hyper. My new roomie is pretty nice. She's pretty different from me in hobbies and just about everything else. She's "seen an episode or two of Sailormoon" and enjoyed it and saw Tenchi Muyo and didn't care for it/thought it was lame, so I think that sums up her judgement on my otaku-like habits. I had to beat my computer several times for not being able to log on to the network (it's still not on) and my printer was being finicky about the type of paper it would put through itself. Tonight is the night of the legendary and famed Pumphandle. That's where the entire Knox community (staff and students) get in a line and shake everyone else's hand. O_o; It's tradition. And this year there's even a giant purple pumphandle gracing the lawn of Old Main to make the occasion even more special. At least there's a picnic afterward. All in all, I think it's going to turn out to be an interesting year.
Random Celestial Thought OTD: "A purple pumphandle? How...symbolic."
Saturday, September 2, 2000 06:52 p.m. foo foo. It's been a last couple of days. I had my last day of work on Thursday, which was pretty fun. I got to help train the new temp. I talked for three hours straight to this poor girl about the job that took me two months to gradually learn. Not to say that I couldn't learn all of it in a short time, but that's just the way the job worked out. Anyway, they fed me some good-bye sundaes, so it was pretty nice. ^_^ Friday I basically just hung about and tried to pack for college. I've got a good pile going. Who knows where I put everything when I came back. Been playing a bunch of Chrono Cross now that I have a bit more time. It's really fun and interesting! There are so many more cat references and the like than Chrono Trigger. It's really funny. Last night I even had my entire party turned into cats! I've reached a point in the game that relates directly back to Chrono Trigger. I shrieked when I saw it since it's a bad thing that happened. My kingdom to be able to give away these spoilers! Gah. Today I just shopped for school stuff. One interesting thing I did do was get my hair highlighted. It's streaked with a shade blonder than my normal color (which is far too brown for my tastes). But it looks nice and golden and brings some more copper/red out. My mom and I are betting no one will notice since it looks really natural--like I had lightened it via the sun. We'll see though. So far, no one has. I wonder if Matt will notice. I haven't told him cuz I wanna see if he will on his own. ^^; We'll see on Tuesday--which is the day I'm back at lil ol' Knox College.
Ah, my Escaflowne dub rant continues today since I finally saw Dilly-kun, Allen, and Folken in action. They're still happily snipping and cutting away at bits of the show, but leaving the dialouge they DO include incredibly accurate. I finally noticed that Van's voice is the same guy who did the English voice of Trowa. It's weird. I expect that at any moment he's going to suddenly shout, "Catherine--I mean Hitomi! I'm going to go defeat them with Heavy--I mean Escaflowne!" Allen's VA is the same guy who did the Zechs dub voice. I shudder when he speaks. We really don't want to hear the that guy trying to voice our favorite chivilrous girl magnet. Folken's voice just isn't deep throated Folken. Dornkirk and the Moleman are ok. Dilandau's voice is just a crime. The actor is a woman, but she sounds way too much like a child, and a sane child at that. She'd make a good Cid voice, but not one for Pyro Boy. Dilly has lost every ounce of cockiness, smugness, and insanity in his voice that we all grew to love. I'm waiting to see the episode where he shouts (according to the preview) "BURN! BURN!" That'll be amusing ^^; Ah yes, and I did end up seeing the words "Additional Music by Yoko Kanno" in the credits. ¬¬ To this I give a hearty slew of swear words and angry grumblings to whoever wrote up those credits. She deserves far more recognition than that. Not to mention the fact that her music (not to mention the scoring!) was far superior to what the dub is offering.

Tuesday, August 29, 2000 05:13 p.m. "In the rain...I walk in the rain...In the rain..."
The lazy one is back with an update! Well, technically not lazy since I've been too busy to update. Friday thru Sunday was of course: the con. This year was the best EVER. And I mean that in the fat man who runs the comic book store kinda way. heh. Anywayz! There was so much to do this year and of course so much to buy. I had a great time, spent time with folks and bonded over anime. I didn't see as much video as I did in previous years, but the same went with sleep anyway. I did get to see Utena movie and several eps of Cowboy Bebop (which is enough to make me an addict ^^;) I'm officially a Yoko Kanno addict (as if I wasn't before) having now heard (oh, and seen) Cowboy Bebop. Although I suppose you wouldn't term me a diehard fan since I'm still not willing to shell out $24.95 per 2 episode tape. No way. And a word about the Utena Movie besides "it's the weirdest movie I have EVER seen." Actually two: Nanami cow. Chuu!
The cosplay was excellent, IMHO. The Final Fantasy 8 folks were great! We should all be so lucky to worship the Cactaur. Er...and I visted some panels--the dubbing panel where I got to voice Nabiki, Sasuke, and Ukyo for a few scenes. ^^; hush you... I also saw the music videos--not too much to speak of if you missed it. There were only four of them--a Marmalade Boy, Tenchi, Akira, and one I can't remember. I also was one of four folk who went to the Working in the Industry panel which was very useful, helpful, and entertaining. Unfortunately, the only offical guest there was the Viz guy Toshi. Still, I learned that I need to learn as much as I can and become experienced as I can. I need to know the right people and be as nice as heck to everyone in the anime industry. They ALL know each other. He even shared a few Viz interviewing stuffs with us. Got to hear interesting things about Ironcat too because there was also a former Ironcat employee there--a woman who did office work, rewrite, and editing. I discovered the bare basics of why Kuni Kimura left Ironcat, and I also now know why Steve gets teased so much about being wild and such. O_o; He is.
But what did I buy? Ah yes. I bought a whole bunch this year. Far more than previous years. Seems the theme of this year's con would be "bigger and better" ne? Well, even though it was great to have the Five Seasons Center as the dealer's room, it'll be VERY nice to have it back at Collins Plaza next year. That way we can spend parking money on more stuff. Or save it, who knows. ^^ My new stuff:
* CDs: Ogata Megumi, Weiss Kreuz, Escaflowne OST, Utena TV OST 1, Two Mix (Best Of and Dream Tactix), Glay, Cowboy Bebop #3 (unfortunatly since the two songs I know want are on each of the first two @_@)
* Sailormoon manga artbook #6--it's a book with a bunch of original character designs, really wacky. Makes me wish I could watercolor.
* Angel Sanctuary artbook--although I know nothing about it other than it has pretty people with wings in it (well, at least the artbook).
* Eagle Vision plushie--the fluffy gray hair sealed the deal ^^;;
* Magical Mates comic #2
* Chrono Cross diorama of Serge and Leena standing on the beach
* a pack of Escaflowne the Movie cards
* Allen Schezar (movie style) keychain. I woulda bought the Merle one too, but she was doing a sexy kitten pose O_o; Like I wanna see her panties...ick.
* Manga: Japanese-style Sailormoon manga #1, 7, 9, 13, Mahou Tsukaitai! #2, Angel Sanctuary #6, and Rayearth 2 #1
* Duo poster, Endless Waltz style
* Two EVA posters for Matt
Not much else is happening with life here except the usual work/play schedule, work wrapping up on Thursday, my preparing to head back to school, and an intense desire to go to bed early. I spent Sunday night, all of Monday, and this morning in a tired stupor. That, however, didn't stop me from dragging myself to work, seeing the Daria TV movie (finally), read some of my summer homework for Contemp Lit, and begin to pack for school. I realized once again how much crap I think I need to bring with me. I'm in the midst of widdling down the pile. I want it smaller this time, dagnabit. Unfortunatly I'm going to have to haul along those 10 novels I bought for Contemp Lit--but I DID save $15 by buying it here--and that's without considering bookstore markup. So that's good, ne?

Wednesday, August 23, 2000 08:45 p.m. Life is life here in Iowa. My work has grown into suckiness. I paperclipped for 8 hours over two days. Intermixed with that was photocopying and now filing bankruptcy documentation. At least I'm getting paid, that's all I can say. Oddly I keep having dizzy spells too. I hope this doesn't interfer with the fun of the weekend, but I doubt it. Speaking of which, the con is in two days and that makes life seem happier. Been playing Chrono Cross for most of my time off during the evening. It's so fun! I have about 8 characters now. I had to fight these things called Beeba last night. Almost killed me off, but I came back and swatted the annoying things down. They were the type of monsters that you just didn't want to destroy in the game, you wanted to pick up your own swallow and beat the crap out of them for real.
I suddenly realized I haven't mentioned my reaction to the Escaflowne dub that appeared on Fox last Saturday. In a word, I was amused and horrified at the same time. The voices were ok. The script was incredibly accurate for what they actually showed. They cut the hell out of the scenes with fighting and blood. They mangled the music due to the combining of the first and second episodes. This mangling entailed not only adding new music (not written by Yoko Kanno, which automatically makes them inferior :P) but they redid the music in any scene that they left untouched. One of those deals when you watch and wonder what they hell they were thinking. Not much apparently. Still, I'm looking forward to next week so I can hear what Dilly-kun sounds like. From the preview clip they showed, he sounds very unpsycho but very much like a woman did his voice.
After the con I suppose I should start thinking about college again. It's been such a nice time in non-academic land, but I must go back obviously. I only read 4 out of 10 books that I should have attempted to read for my Modern and Contemporary Lit class. Shougun just got too involving, ya know? This class is once a week for a four hour stretch until 11:30 p.m. Almost makes me wish I was a Japanese major. Joudan. Not that I don't wish it anyway--no matter how hard I fought for that indepedent East Asian Studies major. It's still not the same. Remind me someone please why I went to Knox again.

Monday, August 21, 2000 08:09 p.m. Saa...been few days since I updated this. I've been a bit busy and just plain tired. Friday as I said I bought Chrono Cross. It just kicks. I love it sooo much! ^_^ I've found some references to CT in it already. I zipped ahead in the hintbook searching for something and found a huge reference to it. I'm not telling though. heheh. Friday night was spent playing CC and generally being happy. I had to go to bed early because I had to get up at 6:45 on Saturday in order to go to Adventureland with Steph-tachi. It was an interesting and trip. We roe a bunch of rides and I ate my first cotton candy. Yes, I was sheltered. I felt pretty crappy toward the end of the trip because not only was I tired but I randomly developed a pain in my ankle AND I just felt dizzier than normal after getting off all the rides. Not that dizziness is becoming uncommon for me lately... Got home pretty late, but it was a fun time.
Most of Sunday was dedicated to playing Chrono Cross. I found out via email that my new roomie hates video games. She doesn't mind that I would play, but she even suggested I bring my own TV if I was a "game-aholic." I can only imagine where this is going to be going. Not that I even play that much during the year. I always plan to play regularly but that regularity ends up being once a week or even longer. Oh well. We'll deal with it. Sunday night was a phone call to my dear koibito. O.o; er... And then I was too tired to do much of anything else.
In it's infinite goodness, Monday was icky as usual. I got this huge paperclipping project which totally hurts my wrists. Hopefully that will be done tomorrow to save me from the pain. And the con is in just a few days. Salvation from work at last. I really need to talk to people about this dealy too. But that will be later. For now is Chrono Cross. Gee, that was a really unfeeling update from me. O.o; I feel I should do a little dance or something to brighten the mood. Which reminds me. My little opinion on Saturday's premiere of the Escaflowne TV dub shall be tomorrow. ^_^ Little suspense there. ooh.

Friday, August 18, 2000 07:52 p.m. *holds her Software Etc. bag aloft* Finally! I have Chrono Cross! Pessimists to your knees! Unlike many sequels, it's wonderful. I love all the character designs and the graphics are just too too nummy! The setup (ie: maps and stuff) is like Chrono Trigger, and I really liked those. And there are cats EVERYwhere! hehe! And I've already heard remade versions of Crono and Lucca's themes in the first bits of the game. I really like the battle system, although I really haven't quite grasped the Element system yet. I buckled and bought the strategy guide too. Well, it was 20% off if I bought it then. I heard that it's a really thick game to go through so I decided that I'd use the book eventually and just bought it. Ah, and else! The Software Etc. guy threw in a Chrono Cross clock for free. It was obvious incentive to make me buy the hint book and the thing was prolly one of those free promotional things for preordering anyway, but it's NEAT and free! It looks like the Epoch's Time gage with a big C in the middle. (Well, i guess it's supposed to be the C in the "Chrono Cross" logo.) The second hand is the "Chrono Cross" logo, and it even came with a battery.
Whatelse...Anywayz. Yeah. Oh, work was really sucky. In the middle of my huge copy project (at about 12:00) the copy machine's autofeeder up and broke. So guess who had to use the manual feeder for over an hour to do this project? Argh! I hate the copy machine. Ah, and another awesome thing. Terry Brooks wrote another Shannara book! I loved that series and it's sister/sequal series. ^_^ And yet to top off my day in weirdness, I saw this teller at the bank today that looked almost exactly like Marlene-hime from Esca. No, that's not a sign of my obsession. It's just truth. Her hair was cut way too short though, but other than that...oh, and the final weirdness of it all? The teller sign next to her said...her name was Marlene.
And the final oddity to end all oddities? My brother is now a captain of the LM football team. O_o

Thursday, August 17, 2000 07:59 p.m. Yosha! Update time. I've noticed that I've not said nearly a single thing about my life. Just my odd rantings. hmm. Well, since I have no Esca rant tonight, I'll spill a bit about me. And for that matter, why I never talk about my life. That can be summed up in two words: it's boring. No, not just boring in the sense that I live in Iowa or anything, but in the sense that I have no life. I'll describe a typical week day for me. Let you decide, ne? Here goes:
6:17 a.m. - I blissfully turn over and realize I have to get up. I smack the alarm across the room and yearn to go back to sleep. I get up anyway. The morning ritual of dressing, breakfast, and tending to the needy cats ensues.
7:15 a.m.- I leave for work (a temp job in a legal department) and listen to my dad rattle on about something odd as he drives.
7:35 a.m.- I arrive at work, vowing that tomorrow will be the day I finally arrive on time.
7:37 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. - I work. Most of the time I have something to do. That entails making copies, filing things, making spreadsheets, teaching people how to do various things on their computer (well, only lately), writing letters, and other fun office things. My latest thing is organizing all the case files. o.x Those things are obnoxiously cumbersome. Sometimes I run out of work and have to go around to everyone in the office to see if they have something for me to do. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. If not I get to read my book or write odd things in my very own Word file.
12:00 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. - I eat a scrumptious lunch prepared by my own self. Usually made up of leftovers from supper. Lately I've had to make Lipton rice and a peanut butter sandwhich. Be still my beating tastebuds. Lunch also includes reading my book. Currently that's Shogun by James Clavell. A very good book.
12:45 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.- I go back to work. Repeat as needed. I do get off at 4:30, btw, but can never manage to get picked up at that time...
5:15 p.m.- I arrive at home and eat dinner.
5:50 p.m.- I begin my evening of fun. I begin with email answering. Then comes in any random order and combination: riding The Machine, writing something, writing my pita, checking out some webbysites, wondering where everyone is O_o, making my lunch, reading, game playing, and a few things I forget. Eventually I shower and go to bed only to rinse and repeat for four more days. O_o Weekends are up in the air as to goings on. Anywayz, now you see what I mean? Bah...why doesn't anyone live here anymore?
Which reminds me...I still need a fencing glove.

Wednesday, August 16, 2000 09:18 p.m. "The more things change, the more they stay the same."
I remember somebody was wondering what that meant the other day. I finally put together somesort of an answer. The answer is that even though the world changes and passes you by, there are still portions of the world that will never, ever change, no matter how hard people try to change them. That's so the story of my life. Here I am, I picture myself in this raging torrent standing perfectly still, you know, like those anime heroines do with their hands clasped to their chests? The world is swirling around like a storm around me. Everything is moving but me. I look down to admire a flower and when I look up, everything's changed. Or gone. Or just not the way I remembered it. Then I have to grab onto those memories so I don't forget. In those moments the world slips again. O_o Whoa, smell the cheese. But yeah, anywayz, even Capricorns can be sappy and sentimental sometimes...
ESCAFLOWNE RANT
Here we go again. As if my blood rant wasn't enough! I just found out today that they're going to totally omit the first episode. What suckiness is this?! Must we viewers be thrust into some odd storyline without being told about who we're watching, why they're there, and how they got there? Granted, no one knows who Van is at that point, but at least by watching the first episode we know he's some dragon-slaying person who needs to get a rock from a dragon. We won't know what kind of a person Hitomi naturally is. We won't know who the heck that red haired girl and the boy who bears a strange resemblance to Allen is. And the TV viewing world won't get to see that kickarse dragon! Gah, when I first saw that thing my jaw hit the floor. The Esca dragons are the most interesting (and by far intelligent!) dragons I've ever seen in the animated world. The computer graphics were well done and not to brash. A pity that all the unfortunate souls who don't own any Esca tapes will miss seeing this. And will someone please answer my question of why it's the shoujo anime that always gets the major screw overs?
All of you stop getting me addicted to JPOP! O_o I'm getting cavities, I swear. Demo...motto motto ne!

Tuesday, August 15, 2000 07:59 p.m. Well, again, here I am. Today is the day I became extra thankful that I can speak a language that very few (well, at least around my blessed state of Confu--I mean Iowa, of course) people speak. Well, perhaps speak is a strong word for it. Perhaps string setences together would be better. The eyes, man, the EYES! They're always watching... Well, that sums up why I'm thankful and I'm sure you can pick out that I had to write something in Japanese so a non-Japanese speaker couldn't read it. How could we have come to this? feh.
Moving on from that topic, I've also come to realize again how much I love Tenkuu no Escaflowne. I'm dreading this Friday and Saturday when the dubs appear on Fox. FOX of all places on cable and non-cable. I can just see what they rename the first episode "When Dragons Attack!" Next on Fox. O_o I hear though that all the editing will be taking out all of the blood. I suppose that's not bad, and that really didn't irk me at first, but then I came to realize it's implications. Now how do they do this? I'm sure scenes will be cut as needed in order to save costs on paint and the pain of repainting. Unless they do this all via computer, then it's just the pain of repainting. Honestly now though, I've been rewatching my uncut episodes while I work The Machine at night and I suddenly realized exactly how much blood they show. It's quite a lot, I'll tell you. It's not gory and nasty or useless like DBZ blood probably was. (Don't whap me for that one--I don't watch DBZ in any form.) How are they going to show Van hurt in Escaflowne? They show it by blood dripping from the Guymelf. And the scene where Dilly-kun gets his cheek sliced? Whoops, that scene goes byebye! Can't let the little kiddies see something like that! That just makes me wonder. If we're trying to teach kids things (who are obviously the target of this show in the US--otherwise it wouldn't be paired in a lineup with Digimon of all the shows. yeesh) what are we teaching them by editing out all the blood? That if you get cut by a sword you'll just scream and be all right *coff* later? Right. One of the main focuses of Esca is the war that goes on--again a war without blood? Fake and cheesy to me. We need that red rain!
I guess that's it. I really need to get started translating again. School returns in just a few short weeks--but not before the great AnimeIowa Con. I suppose my life will pick up again with a lil Chrono Cross and new anime goods by my side. Or then again. ^~

Sunday, August 13, 2000 04:51 p.m. Yo and stuff! And as Abe Simpson has once said to spout, "Welcome to my world! *snore!*" Well, Karen has convinced me to take up this task of having a pita. Everyone's doin' it. Unfortunatly I'm almost totally html ignorant so I'm using the "Baka HTML" page on one of my fav sites Moonwings created, maintained, and admin'ed by Skyelight, an SMU citizen where I also frequent--the forum at least. And that's my explanation why this page layout is so...well, crappy. Laugh if you will, if you're into that sort of torture of your fellow humans. >:P Yah. Erm. Anywayz, so I suppose I should make something useful up to post. Such a thing, talking about myself, yeesh. But here goes.
The summer seems like it's whisked by me. O.o I have no idea where it all went. God, I seem to say that a lot, substituting the word "summer" anyway. I really didn't do much, isolated in wonderful Iowa where all my friends save one live in different cities and states. I'm a temp by trade--at least for now, I didn't do battle with Knox regulations for 9 months for my independent East Asian Studies major for nothing! I've worked exclusively at this one insurance company doing various things. I was in Executive for a day answering phones. Then I moved to HR and basically ran the front desk for three days. Then I moved up the proverbial ladder (elevator?) to Legal where I do various things that the kind counselors don't wish to do themselves. I copy. I file. I make databases. I copy and file some more. I detest the microfiche machine. Damn thing always wants to break when I use it. -.-
Still, in three weeks my work is done for the summer. In two weeks I'm sailing off to wonderful downtown CR to attend the annual AnimeIowa, where I plan to spend plenty of cash on keen anime goods. Yumma! Speaking of Japanese things, I was so happy on Friday I finally got some info on a Japan summer trip. It's through the U of Kansas and looks really nice. I'll take a language class and a contemporary Japan class at a university in Hiratsuka. I cannot wait to go to Japan. Some classmates of mine are already in Japan at Waseda University for a whole year. ;_; Lucky ducks. Ah me, but I get to spend the next year taking fun English classes and Japanese classes. I can't wait to take Japan: Art and Ideas this fall. Oy! It's being taught by the new (well, new in the sense we've been at the college for the same amount of time) Japanese art-professor. The course listing boasts that one of the main focus will be tea ceremony. With all the anime and manga I've viewed, it's really about time I got serious with the non-pop culture Japanese stuff. I mean, yeah, I've got the language and some Japanese books and related books (read: books about Japanese stuff by non-Japanese English speakers like Shogun and Memoirs of a Geisha). But all I've seen of traditional Japanese things has been a bit in class, a bit in language class, and bits from anime/manga.
One thing I am looking forward to is in my independent Japanese class is helping to teach 101. How keen is THAT? Right now it's only a suggestion, but I would come in for 20-30 minutes once a week and teach something. ^_^; Makes me wonder though, what will they call me? Sensei, likely. Although, I'd love to be called sempai just once. O.o I need to find more kohai to influence. ehehe...^^;;
There, you happy? :P
