The "Three Musketeers" and Tohru from Fruits Basket, my new obsession!  They are, from the left, Hatori, Shigure and Ayame.  No, they're not the main characters, but I love them none the less!  The manga has not been licensed for English publication yet, but you can find the Japanese version for a decent price at Sasuga Japanese Bookstore.  The anime is available on DVD and is excellent, with many extras.  Check it out!

Subterfuge: And One for All!

Uh-Huh

Your weasel is an American Mink
Your weasel is the American Mink. Loved for your
coat, hated for your attitude, and found on
both sides of the ocean now. Good news: You're tough and adaptable. Whether
you're swiming, hunting on land, or released
from a furrier's cage by a well meaning
bleeding heart, you've got what it takes to
kick ass. Bad news: Kicking ass, while enjoyed in North
America where you belong, is not appreciated
abroad in Europe. Bye-bye, minkie.

Which weasel are you?

So know you know. Heh!

Alison, the kitties are sooooo cuuuuuuteee!! So X isn't in this latest issue of Asuka either? Grrrr. Ah, well, I'll try to enjoy the other series. I'm seriously considering NOT renewing my subscription to Asuka when it comes up in December. This is ridiculous!

I just got back from having the second part of my root planing done. Whining...er..Details in the Livejournal. However, on the plus side, just got my copies of Fruits Basket 12 and X 18! I'd forgotten how very cool that scene with Karen and Nataku was! Be still, my beating heart!

Yet another layout! Very nice! And yours, too! I ought to think about changing mine again, but every time I pull up the page, it makes me smile. So I guess it's just not the right moment yet!

No really, I'm still alive!

I've not been on the computer a whole lot after messing up my back last week. I'm feeling a little better today, but sitting at my desk is not very comfortable. So instead, I've been watching movies and reading books and laying flat much of the time.

I did go over to Waterloo to teach a Beginning Calligraphy class on Saturday. I was very nervous, but it turned out fine. I also took some classes--a couple on heraldry, one on writing research papers, and a card-weaving class. Spending all day in those uncomfortable desks took a toll on me, though. Sunday it was back to laying flat in bed.

Bob's back home from a week in Kansas City. He got some computer graphic programs while he was there and spent the day yesterday playing with layouts and having a grand time. He used to have to do that for his work a lot (before we moved here), and although he doesn't miss that job, I think he misses the creativity. What the heck, it keeps him off the streets.

Whoa, the Sakura Board is jumping again! I step away for a month and see what happens! Lika-chan, you rant all you want. I love it when you do, and obviously there seems to be a rash of cluelessness about! Sheesh!

Satsuki-chan, hope your classes are going well.

Ammie-chan!! Sorry to hear you were sick! Hope all is better!

Alison, hope the new kitties are fitting in! Did I miss the link, or do you have pictures up? (Yes, I'm a sucker for cute cat pictures!)

Rachel and Rem, I love the new layouts! Very cool!

Also, regarding the comments you were making about the news report on the growing larger women (12+) fashions and how some person disapproves...I saw red when I saw that. I'm from a family where women are just big, even when they're thin. I'm 5'8 inches tall. At size 10, I looked anorexic. I look decent at size 12-14. It used to really hurt my feelings when I was younger. (It doesn't now, because I'm legitimately fat at size 18-20.) People can't legally discrimate about race any more, so they're using weight instead. And man, don't get me started about the "Scientific" arguments. They used to use "science" to prove that white people were superior to all other races. I agree American society in particular tends towards obesity, partly due to sedentary culture, but that's not the whole story. I can look at pictures of my ancestors going back into the mid-19th century, and I tell you, once people hit thirty, they get fat. I didn't think it would happen to me, but it did. And it hurt to see how differently you get treated. I agree with your point, that the designers aren't promoting obesity, they're just facing facts. A lot of women are bigger now. At my size, I can't wear the same kind of clothes that I did when I was thinner, because the styles just don't suit my bodytype. It would be nice to have some fashions that look flattering without being tents or muu-muus.

Ah, well, rant over. At some point today, the workmen are supposed to come over and fix the garage door so that my car can be freed from captivity. Hopefully it won't be too expensive...

Owie

Went to the dentist yesterday. Had a root planing for the right side of my mouth (left side happens in three weeks, presumably after I've supposedly forgotten the discomfort of the first one). Insurance won't cover it, so had to pay out of pocket. Now THAT was painful!

So, anyway, the numbness has worn off and I am pretty sore, especially (for some odd reason) my tongue. So I'm cranky as all get out. Grrrr!

I'm behind on social blogging, but will do so later when I'm in a better mood.

Whew!

In-laws are in town and staying for a few days. Bob's dad is helping him on re-wiring the house some more. I'm continuing my laundry marathon and hanging out with my mother-in-law. Honestly, I never know what to say to her, so we sit in the living room, me working on my tablet-weaving and her reading our Entertainment Weekly magazines. However, it's good they're here and that Bob can get more done on the house before he finishes his vacation up tomorrow.

Home Sweet Home

Yep, I'm back. The trip was very long (we put 2,800 miles on the car) and somewhat stressful. My brother's wedding was nice, although it had to be moved inside because it rained. Poor Christie was heartbroken, but she put up a brave front. They're in Italy for two weeks now, doing the honeymoon thing. I'm trying not to be jealous. (We honeymooned in the mountains of Kentucky for four days. It was pretty, but obviously not Europe!)

Christie seems nice enough. I'm afraid we really didn't get to talk much, which is par for the course where weddings are concerned. She's rather different that what I would have expected Jeff to go for, but otoh, her genkiness is probably good for my melancholic brother.

I was shocked at how much Texas has changed. It was always rather ugly, but now the sprawl is really bad. Bob and I both agreed we certainly didn't want to live there again! And the traffic! Iowa has spoiled us, I'm afraid.

The Family was the Family. Only one of my cousins (Martha) was able to attend. She brought her little girl, Paulina, who was an active toddler, but quiet. Martha really kept up with the kid, though. She's a good mom, I think. The Aunts attended, of course. And as usual, I was shunted off to the side and pretty much ignored. Why I even bother to show up to these things, I don't know. Bob was absolutely great. He really helped Jeff calm down. They bonded over comics and video games and general guy stuff. My parents were driving Jeff (and evidently Christie) crazy. He doesn't have the tolerance for them that I do, but then again, he wasn't around during Dad's whole near-death heart surgery thing a few years back. I guess that episode changed a lot of things about the relationship between my folks and myself. Yeah, they can drive me crazy, too, but I also am painfully aware that they won't live forever, and that I do love them and it's better to just try to enjoy their company while they're still with us. Life is too short to waste on bitterness.

We were supposed to camp a week at Lilies (Smithville Lake in Missouri), but we only lasted three and a half days. It was stupid to try to stack that trip on top of the wedding. We were exausted when we got there, and the heat, bugs and general camping stuff just got to us after awhile. Hey, at least it didn't rain! Lilies is a huge party, and we're just not party people. The classes were fun, though, and it was enjoyable to catch up with old friends and meet some nice people.

However, Bob is about ready to quit the SCA. Lilies wasn't what he expected or wanted. His favorite event so far has been Queen's Prize--in other words, the Arts and Science Exhibitions. He likes to do research and make stuff. The rest of the SCA is a waste of time to him. I got him to agree to still go to things with me, but we will have to pull back on our participation, since I insist that we do this together. That's okay. I think the big thing is that he really hates to camp, so if we day-trip and space out the events we go to, I think he'll be happy. He's still kind of cranky from the trip.

I am, too, but that's due to picking up some weird stomach flu that's kicking my butt. Well, that and recovering from the ticks and other bugbites aquired last week. I must have some kind of allergy, judging from the rashes and welts. *sigh* Yeah, I'm whining. Cope.

Hey, the new Harry Potter book comes out tomorrow! And not only did I get a discount for pre-ordering, but I have a gift certificate to use on it as well! Also, my Fruits Basket manga finally arrived! Wow! The art is gorgeous and the story...intense! It's darker than the anime, more mysterious. It's really well-done. I'm so happy! Expect some Furuba ranting as I make my way through the volumes!

It looks like I'll be spending more time with my Japanese studies now. I sort of set things aside last year to concentrate on getting a local SCA group set up, but I need to get back on course. I've forgotten so much! I'm reviewing my kana again (katakana, especially, since I was always shaky on that) and found a couple of decent workbooks to practice kanji with. It's slow work, but I do enjoy it.

One More Thing

I'm off to my brother's wedding and the War of the Lilies afterwards, but I wanted to say something about Lika's recent rant before I headed out.

First off, Lika, I adore you and love it when you rant. You say it like you see it and you always make me think. I've missed you terribly in the past months as your life has dragged you away from blogland, and it's so wonderful to see you back.

That being said, I did feel a pang of "Ow" about your statement of hoping you won't be writing fanfic when you're 25 and those people who are 40 and still writing fanfic. I hope you're still writing fanfic of some kind when you're 25 and even older, because I love your stuff. It's fun and original and it would be a shame not to see more of it.

I myself am an older fan, and I still like writing fanfic, mainly because it's an escape. Raising money for the blind is a worthy endeavor, but it's also too much like real work, which I have enough of, thank you very much. Ficcing is play. Now I grant, some people take it way too seriously. This isn't supposed to be high literature. But I don't care what hobby you're into, you'll always run into those people who take their play too seriously.

I try to do my best on my own fanfic, and I put it out on the web for people to enjoy. If you like it, great! Let me know! If you don't, fine, but don't tell me about it. I don't care. I'm not doing this to "Improve Myself As A Writer." I'm having some fun. I'm playing. That doesn't mean I don't try my best on these little toys of mine, but when it's done, it's done.

(The above of course does not apply when I put out a draft and ask for comments. That's a draft, and I'm usually asking for comments because I'm stuck on something. Lika, that's where your comments in the past have proved so helpful, as on the now-nearly-defunct Inuki list. The above applies to the finished product.)

So in general, I'm agreeing with what you're saying, but the age jab...owie, that smarts!

Since I'll be on the road, I may not be able to comment further on this subject until I get back, unless I can get online at my brother's place. So anyone out there wanting to talk about this: I'm not ignoring you, and will be happy to discuss this further upon my return.

Nice rant, Lika-chan. You've still got the touch.

Insomniac Theatre

Yep, in honor of my panicky, anxiety-ridden insomnia, I'm ranting aimlessly on my blog. Enjoy, and remember, I'm only half-awake, and that half is barely cognizant due to lack of sleep and heart-rending fear of upcoming travel.

1) We need more Fruits Basket sites. Particularly in English. Particularly with text translations so I'll be able to read my manga when it finally arrives, which unfortunately will be during my trip. A good resource is Random Fandom and the excellent FruityGroup List, which despite the name is pretty readable, except for the endless Yuki/Tohru/Kyo debates.

2) Hatori as my favorite FB character has a rival. I'm really starting to like Kureno, the quiet guy who follows Akito around except when he has a day off to romance Tohru's friend, Arisa (Uo-chan). He's cute, he's clueless, he's mysterious AND he thinks Arisa is hot (which I do, too--Tohru's cute and all, but Arisa is something special). This last part is important because Arisa doesn't consider herself that pretty (it doesn't help that Kyo and the Prince Yuki Fanclub Girls call her a "Yankee" all the time). The fact that Kureno fell for her at first sight is a sign of TRUE LOVE, so they just need to get over her shyness, the 9-year age gap, the fact that he's a rooster, cursed, and pretty much under Akito's thumb. Work hard, Tohru! We know you can solve this problem as well as humanizing Kyo, mesmerizing Yuki, keeping Shigure's house clean, breaking the Sohma curse AND graduating high school just like you promised your mother! We have faith in you, chica!

3) God, I'm such a sappy fangirl.

4) X2 rocked, and I want to see it again, which I don't say about many first-run movies. I'm holding off on Matrix until the DVD comes out, since I haven't finished watching the first one. I'm really looking forward to the new Charlie's Angels movie (I loved the first movie, plus I used to watch the series every week when I was a little kid). There also Alex and Emma, which looks very promising as a chick flick. I miss having girlfriends to see movies like this with. Everyone my age is too busy with their families and kids to hang out with friends much.

5) Found a dress to wear to my brother's wedding next week. (I've lost nearly 30 lbs since leaving Des Moines, so my old office clothes just don't fit right anymore. While this is a good thing in some ways, it still means spending money on fancy clothes that I'll rarely wear--I'm a very casual person usually. But I digress..) The dress is a pretty color, blue-green, which goes well with my complexion. I also got a blouse and slacks to wear to the rehersal dinner. It's a bluish blouse, with a neutral top and brown slacks and I just realized that it looks almost exactly like something my mother used to wear in the 1970s. Oh my god, I'm turning into my mom. *** FEAR *** At least I didn't perm my hair or anything....

6) I can't believe my brother is getting married. It's just really odd. I hope he'll be okay. I haven't met the gal yet, but Mom says she's nice. Of course, Bob is going to tell the gal about how she has it made as an in-law. My parents don't criticize him at all. As long as she doesn't divorce my brother, she'll be a saint to them. Yes, my folks are weird.

7) We were supposed to go to this event today, but considering I have gotten little to no sleep and am a basket case and we're trying to get ready for a long-ass drive to my brother's wedding in San Antonio, I'm thinking we may not make it after all. Which is a great pity, because this group holds really fun events. Bad timing, bad timing.

I'm really babbling now, so it's time to stop. Maybe I'll social-blog later. Maybe not, we'll see. Bye, now.

Saturday, June 7, 2003 04:15 a.m.

Home Again, Home Again, Jiggity-jig

Well, we got back from Crown Tourney last night, stumbling in about 2 am. Of course, we didn't actually get to bed until nearly 4 am. So Bob and I were pretty much zombified today. However, after two freezing nights in the tent, Bob was determined to sleep at home!

The winner was Joe Angus, fighting for Phaedra. Another Grimfelon king, it seems. He defeated Siridian in a polearm bout. Knocked poor Siridean right off his feet. He didn't seem too happy, but was gracious in his loss. That guy is pure class! The other finalists were Hassan and Garrick. It was a large crown list (29 fighters), and it rained all day, so the fighters were dealing with the wet and cold. There were three Iowegians fighting this time: Dirk from Shadowdale, and Luther and Kiernan (sp?) from Coeur d'Ennui. They fought well and we were very proud of them! Alas, no Northern king this time. Next time, maybe!

Mighel (Cassandra's husband) put up some pictures of the bouts on his site if you want to see them. Bob took some pictures, too, and I may get those up later this week when I'm not so tired.

I did briefly talk with her Highness Phaedra after the tourney, and she was pleased by our invitation for them to attend our event. They have not set their calender yet, but she did say that since the event was the week after Blood of Heros (the Grimfells event--their home group), and that they did intend to come into Iowa during their reign, there is a chance they might be able to attend! She was a nice lady, very sweet. She'd heard of me, which was a bit of a surprise, since they're from the other end of the kingdom. Guess it must be my hell-raising reputation, huh? ;-P

On Sunday, Bob participated in the King's Company of Archers Tournament. Our sponsor Barony, Coeur d'Ennui, was short an archer, so he shot for their team. Their colors are red and white and their Baroness, Winnifred, had made up some really cool tabards with their totem boar's head on them. Bob was wearing his red tunic that day, so he looked really spiffy out there. It was really nice seeing all the archers. The archery tournament was quite long, taking all day. As a participant, Bob got a badge as one of the King's Company of Archers! He did fairly well, considering this was only his second or third archery competition.

Some of our fellow Iowegians took us on a walking tour of the site, which is also where the Lilies War is held. It's really beautiful, right off a lake, with lots of trees and green grass. There will be classes, archery, fighting, merchants, all the fun things about an SCA war in a very relaxed setting. I'm getting really psyched about going. It'll be fun!

There was also some neat equestrian things going on, which were very fun to watch! I really admire those people who bring the horses and do the jousting exercises. SCA is expensive enough! I couldn't imagine what it would cost to do that with horses?! Ferdinand from Lonely Tower brought his falcons and they are always very impressive. He said they really couldn't leave them anywhere, since a licensed falconer would have to take care of them. That's also an expensive hobby, I'd think! There were a whole lot of dogs there as well, including a couple of really cute miniature pinschers! One of them was wearing a little white sweater on Saturday, so in the mist he looked like a very small sheep! XD

Court was fun. Their Majesties Valens and Susannah know how to do a good show for the people. Susannah especially speaks very well. Bob finally got his Award of Arms! Let's hear it for Lord Aelfgeirr! *cheers* I was also called up in court, and was inducted into the Order of the Golden Calon Swan for my work with calligraphy/illumination.

I was somewhat surprised. Siridian had insisted that I needed to be at the event, because he wanted to speak to me about some marshalling things. After cold-and-wet Saturday, we thought we'd pack up and leave early Sunday, since it's about seven and a half hours drive home. He collared Bob, and insisted that we stay all day Sunday. I was confused since he then left himself Sunday afternoon without talking to me...so it dawned on me that something else was up. But I certainly wasn't expecting an arts award. Susannah had seen my work at Queen's Prize last winter (she does calligraphy, too, although her big interest in pavillion-making) and was very complimentary there. She mentioned it again when she gave me the award. It was nice to know she'd thought of my work so kindly.

As usual, there were a lot of neat period tents to look at, including a few yurts, which of course made Bob very happy. We got to hang out with our friends from nearby groups and met a lot of people, including the legendary Pavel, who told us several stories about past Lilies Wars and the Calontir Army in action. There was another fellow, Gerald, who's a Laurel in embroidery. He was wearing this fantastic Celtic tunic on Saturday, wool embroidered with wool, absolutely gorgeous! He's teaching a week-long class at Lilies--I'm thinking about taking it!

It's good to be back, though. The cats really missed us (they keep following us from room to room now, not letting us out of sight) and after camping I'm always grateful for the comforts of home!

I see there's been a recent spate of activity amongst my favored blogs! I must reply soon--social blogging a little later, when I'm more awake!

Monday, May 26, 2003 07:06 p.m.

Too Early

Woke up this morning too early. It was quite warm, and I had skipped my allergy meds yesterday (in the vain hope that the season was over). However, it's not the case. I couldn't breathe well. So now I'm up. Maybe I'll nap later.

Satsuki-chan, sent the info you wanted via your Corvus email addy. It's also on the sidebar. :-)

Vague feelings of anxiety, of the quesy stomach/tight chest variety. We're off to Horse and Falcon this weekend. For someone who likes to experience other places, I get all scaredy about actual travel. Stupid, but there you go. It's not like we're planning to actually do anything but hang out with friends. I'm an idiot!

Bob has finally caved and let me order the Fruits Basket manga. It's been awhile since I've actually had a full-fledged manga obsession, and I'm enjoying this very much. I like many series anyway, but this is like the first rush of falling in love, without the worry about whether he loves you back. As a married woman, the heady days of real-life infatuation had damn well better be behind me, so I'm having fun with this! The searching the web for sites, trying to discover what translations are where, taking furtive peeks at scanlations (secure in the virtuous knowledge that MY manga, while not yet received, is paid for!), pulling back out the Japanese dictionaries and praying that I haven't forgotten the little Japanese I learned during my love-affairs with X and Berserk and Sensei (and I still love them, never fear). This is fun.

Alas, no time for web surfing today. Sewing, laundry, packing...it's a job just getting ready to go to SCA events! But we'll have a good time, I'm sure.

Thursday, May 22, 2003 05:16 a.m.

Fruity Goodness

Yep, it was time for a change. I keep thinking I ought to work harder and actually change the layout of the page, rather than the picture and background, but I like this format, and it's been what, almost two years that I've used it? I think I'll save my experimentation for another page--maybe my long-delayed Fanfiction site.

I did add several links, including the Livejournals and some site for some of the Elitist Bastards. Of particular interest is The Ninth Art and The X-Axis. Check 'em out!

I should be sewing rather than playing with the Pitas blog, but I was inspired. Bob is just shaking his head. He's one to talk! He's just as bad with his Viking stuff and his plans to make the little side-room in the basement into a wine-cellar so he can stash the mead he's wanting to make! And to think, I introduced him to this hobby!

And now for some socialness:

Alison is back! And the Sakura Board has been jumping! Hey, that's what happens when someone disses Kusanagi! Heh-heh-heh. You have to hand it to Subaru. Seems that character is always involved in controversy. He gets more rant time than even Kamui! Sucks about the extra month's delay. These long breaks are hard on the fandom. And you obviously haven't gotten over that Eyeball fetish yet? XD XD

So, Satsuki-chan, I take it you saw X2 then? You know, I didn't like Wolvie so much in the comics, but on-screen, he's dead sexy. I wasn't expecting to like Nightcrawler as much as I did, either. But the one I really want to see is Gambit! Hopefully with his Cajun accent intact!

Lika-chan, I'll have to see if I can dig up a recent picture of Russ (my brother-in-law). Most of what I have is from the wedding five years ago. It's funny. Bob, who is big, blonde and balding (but still very cute, IMHO), looks nothing like either of his brothers. His mom says he looks like his maternal grandfather. Russ looks a lot like their Dad, who was very good-looking in his younger days. But yes, it's true, he looks and sounds a lot like James Marsden, to the point that it was weird watching the movie. Oh, and the link you want is now on the sidebar!

Ammie-chan! I got your package! Thank you so much! Loved those pics you put on your letter. The comment about Yuzu conquering the world was especially funny! To answer your questions:

(Okay, most of these answers will be from X. If you want me to do another series, let me know.)

Character (from anywhere) you absolutely do NOT want to see killed off: Kusanagi, obviously!

Character you DO want to see killed off. >;3: Yuuto. I can't stand him. He should die horribly.

Character you don't want to see go evil.: Sorata. He's just too good as a good guy.

Character who would be fucking AWESOME going evil!!! >:D Yuzuriha. Genki and Eviiilll, what a combination!

Most under-rated relationship in a series: Kusanagi/Yuzuriha, of course!

Most OVER-rated relationship: Subaru/Seishirou. (You knew I'd say that!)

Character who should get laid RIGHT NOW! :): Kusa/Yuzu...err, no, maybe not. Kamui/Subaru! Yeah! Sex would solve all their problems! ;-D

Couple who it would be a crime if they don't get married: Kusanagi/Yuzuriha, in time of course. Kamui/Subaru. And Sorata/Arashi, except that he's doomed. Maybe if they get married real fast....

Top three male characters you'd marry.: 1)Kusanagi (it's my uniform fetish, I can't help it!), 2)Nokoru Inomoyama (he's just so chivalrous), 3)Sorata (he knows how to enjoy life!)

Top three female characters you'd marry: 1)Yuzuriha (I love her sunny disposition!), 2)Karen (stylish and smart, what's not to love?), 3)Kanoe (hey, the sex is bound to be good, right?)

Rachel! Loved the pics from Japan, very cool. Glad to see you didn't forget the frog! It's always so fun to read about your travels! And I got your package! Thanks so much! One of the cards was Kusanagi! Once things slow down a bit, I'll take a look at Naruto. I'm looking forward to it!

Niiice layout!. So Azrael's gone? I haven't been following DC much lately, although I used to be quite fond of them. My favorite character of all time was the Phantom Stranger, and I love the old horror comics--House of Secrets, House of Mystery, the Witching Hour--that I read as a kid. This dates me terribly, I know. I love what Gaiman did to them during his Sandman run. Alas, manga, anime and SCA pretty much suck up all my disposable income nowadays.

Rem, it so sucks that that chick stole your layout! But with the "No-Direct-Linking" all over your blog, I can't read what you're saying...?

Okay, enough of that. I have to make an appointment to get my car seen to. This may require an infusion of cash, more than I want to spend. I just keep telling myself that it's still cheaper than making a car payment every month! But still...arrrgh!
