Sipowicz & Me
Last night the syndicated NYPDBlues finished their cycle and we're back at
the beginning of the whole show now. I remember when it came out and
thinking it was stupid how they used the drifting cameras and thereby being
totally turned off by teh show and never watching it again until this year.
Now, I've seen it a thousand times, and the characters are deeply buried
under tightly packed topsoil in the vacuous colloquiality of my
subconcious. "Sipowicz" means something now. Getting back to my original
point, though,I don't even notice the difting cameras anymore - they're
doing their job, they're fooling me. Was I once more aware? Was I once more
observant? No, I think I was once more suggestable. I convinced myself to
be alert and notice things in "The Medium" and then decide whether or not I
liked them, and I spent 5 or 6 years of my life in those horse latitudes of
higher education. I emerged a happier, fatter man. Now I'm happy to be
fooled again - that's why I loved movies in the first place... I love my
disbelief and I want it to be suspended. Despite what tehy want us to
believe, you don't need to be a cynic to be intelligent and you odn't need
to hate movies in order to make them. I'm not the intellectual who enjoys
categorizing the cause & effect of the reverent flicker - Rather, I'm the
one who loves that flicker and enjoys as much to make the flicker as I do
to be subject to it. Hopefully, 'The Medium' will let me run on top of that
brick wall (I don't consider it sitting on the fence since my butt doesn't
hurt).
