So, I stayed late for the Global Scholars meeting, and mom and I got dinner at Hellas. Greek food is good. But the really good part was the Greek coffee. I have no idea what's in it, but, well, before I dinner I was tired to the point of giddyness (sorry anyone who had to witness that), but right now, I feel great!
Plus, Lauren's Macedonian, which is kind of like being Greek. And Lauren's cool, because she leaves comments.
By the way, Global Scholars seemed awesome. I'm definitely doing it. Alright, I've gotta study some German (my new project!) and a little for my non-west test. Ugh.

Did you know that Thailand was the only country not conquered during both the colonial and communist periods? I think the name Thailand has something to do with this. Of course, I cannot be sure. The flight attendant spewing out fun-facts who told me this had a very thick accent. You know, one of those accents that are so hard to understand, yet the speaker hardly realizes that the weird looks you’re giving them have to do with this fact. I suppose they don’t see their English as accented.
On the other hand, I am a firm believer in the fact that I sound like a chicken when speaking French. I have no idea why. French is a very un-chicken language, non? It’s a cheese language. It’s a dry overpriced wine language. It’s a silky curls under a velvet beret language. Less poetically put: it’s the antithesis of chicken.
Which reminds me, there is a rather hung-over-looking man who is reading Voltaire as I write. In French, too. Although, he looks American to me. If it weren’t for the intimidating brunette half asleep on his shoulder, I would strike up a conversation. He seems to be eyeing my tattered book of Borges with suspicious curiosity-- or perhaps curious suspicion. Well, enough semantic quibble. Back to letter-writing.
Right, well, speaking-- or maybe writing, yes?-- of Borges, I have fallen in love. With the letter “B” mind you. It seems to be everywhere I go. Never mind the fact that I’m Bangkok, I’ve also got a series of Beatles songs (now, I guess they are technically The Beatles; however, the “the” is often dropped, right? or at least I could say Beatles, The) playing in my head. Additionally, the only book I took with me which is still in decent condition, and that is a book of poetry by Bukowski. Outside the window of my hotel room there is a very loud nest of birds. I was also stung by a bee-- the ultimate “b”-- earlier this week. Yes, the birds and the bees have most definitely been bothering me (double entendre intended).
So, to break myself of this “b”-streak I purchased a copy of the Tao Te Ching (yes, in Thailand). I’ll leave you with a quote that reminded me of you “When a foolish man hears of the Tao,/ he laughs out loud./ If he didn’t laugh,/ it wouldn’t be the Tao.”

Okay, bad title, but I couldn't resist. It just seemed so damn witty! Basically, I've been seeing a lot of Gay Marriage debates around the web. Face it, it's a hot issue right now, and while some argue that it's not as important as the media has made it, it's still prevalent and it's something that does have some influence over the election, in my humble opinion.The biggest arguement I've seen against it is the arguement that God doesn't support homosexuality. My goal is to let Christians know that God doesn't want you to hate homosexuality. I AM NOT ANTI-CHRISTIAN. My father is Catholic and my mother is Methodist. I consider myself Unitarian. I do believe in God, I just don't think it's right for people to misinterpret the book they base their faith on.
Right, so, the most commonly cited anti-homosexuality verse I've seen so far is Leviticus 18:22
"You shall not lie with men as with women. It is an abomination."
Simple, right? God doesn't want men having sex with other men? Well, not quite. The truth is one must go back to the original text. The word "abomination" is, in my opinion, a poor translation of the word "to'ebah" which basically means "ritually unclean." Anyone who's read Leviticus knows that this book also tells us not to plant two different crops in the same feild. It also tells us not to eat pork, wear mixed cloth, etc. The said things are, like homosexuality, considered unclean not sinful or unethical.
I've also seen Romans 1:26-27 cited frequently.
"women exchange natural use for unnatural and also the men, leaving the natural use of women, lust in their desire for each other, males working shame with males, and receiving within themselves the penalty of their error."
Without going into specifics, I'll simply say that this passage refers back to pagan cults at the time which took part in orgies as a part of their religion.
I Corinthians 6:
"Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,"
First let me state that in other versions of the Bible (I am using King James, by the way, laugh away, but it's all I got), I have seen "effiminate" written simply as "homosexual." This word goes back to "malakoi" and "arsenokoitai" which relate to young boys who worked as prostitutes to older men. This verse is more against pedophelia than homosexuality. Sorry, Jacko.

Forget romance. Yesterday the usual gang (sans William who was off being Catholic) met at Neha's and watched Legally Blonde and Bend It Like Beckham.
We watched the movies (on Neha's giant TV) and played Cranium (which is infinitely fun). Around ten or so Meyerhoff went home. The highlights of the evening include fitting three people on a treadmill, sneak-attacking people with footballs from behind the couch while pretending to be Viet-Cong with Chisato, and staying up late and having great conversations that I can barely remember.
I had a wonderful time. Girls, if you are reading this for some reason, I want you to know how thankful I am to have such great friends. I'm so glad I'm friends with you all.

For anyone who cares, I did get an eight at contest, ie, all perfects except a "two" in tone quality. Ouch. My judge urged me to essentially stop trying so hard. Also, she said that my "e" sounds too much like an "ay" and not enough like an "eh." Wutev.
Right, so anyway, today we dressed like Muslims in Non-west. I was the lucky one who got to wear the floor length veil (is this called a chador? I can't remember). We talked about the positive and negative aspects of wearing the hijab and the definition of freedom. It was all very interesting. One thing I did notice, however, was that I wasn't pulling at my shirt or looking at my reflection in the window like I sometimes do.
On a similar note, I'd like to find a copy of The Trouble with Islam by Irshad Manji, Canada's favorite Muslim Lesbian. Basically she looks at the way the media portrays Islam, the issues among Muslims and their interpretation of Islam, and ways Islam can be reformed. Eeeenteresting.
Also, India has been erased (finally) and Canada now covers the board in the Pub. Office. I have hearby declared myself Queen of Newfoundland. Woah-yeah. On a side note, the issue of the paper is taking forever. Hmm, maybe we should do less drawing and eating and more publishing.
Yeah, right.

Don't get me wrong, I probably like school more than the average high school nobody, but I'm getting pissed. For those of you who don't know, I am in stupid kid English mainly because of my past record for slacking off. The truth is, I am a very capable student in English, (by the way, I got an eleven on my writing sample, the only non-plus student to do so) I just have bad time management skills. So, you may or may not be surprised when you learn that currently I have a C in English. Of course, I'd have a B+/A- had there been any essays or tests yet, but that's not the bad part. Here's the bad part: I'm getting a mid-quarter in English. Christ, the last thing I need is a note sent home to mommy telling her about "not working up to her potential" and an effing study hall. I'm in fucking trouble for sure.
Which is why I don't want any frees next year. No frees = no study halls. Regarding next year, I've got all my classes picked except science. I've decided not to take Physics at all, and probably will take AP Bio. William was trying to convince me to take AP Chem though. I don't know...
Speaking of William, my Emperor, thank you for helping me get over writer's block and its obligatory self-hatred. Now, post a comment already!

Before I start my little rant, I'd like to say that, yes, I am going to the LN speech meet. Turns out State is the 28th. Also, I found a rather cool song by Björk. It's unreleased, but epitonic.com has it. The title is "Verandi" and it's worth a listen.
Right, so today I'm going to 'splain myself. You see, the name "strawberry" isn't quite as random as you may think. It actually has some significance. Basically, it goes back to April of 2003 (my freshman) when Mrs. Odmark, my English teacher, was teaching us about poetry, something I knew very little about, but was interested in. Anyway, we did an activity in which we drew words from an envolope and wrote poems with those words. I drew "strawberries" among other things, and I became consumed by the idea of strawberries-- what they meant, what they implied, something like that...
And that's when I started writing seriously. I find that strawberries represent the person I have become to some extent-- maybe in a less sappy way. I just see that point as a turning point. So, I guess that's why. Kind of lame, I know, but that's the story and you should know it, wonderful reader.
Also of note is the following exchange between William and myself:

Well, our group got a first in group one. For those of you familiar with ISSMA, that means we are going on to state. YEAH! On the other hand, I think I'll have to cancel the speech meet. Damn...
My plans for Feb include:
- Learn how to play guitar better. Feb's song is "Is There Anybody Out There?" by Pink Floyd. I got the tabs and I'm ready to go.
- Finish a poem and like it enough to submit it somewhere, possibly the KR which is taking submissions from High School kids.
- Continue to do resonably well in school.
- Start conditioning for lacrosse.
Now, I'm going to go take a cat-nap. I'm strangely tired. Oh well, I'll write again soon, I promise.
