2002, Pt. 11: The Challenge

So here’s the deal. It’s impossible to know all the good records in a given year, especially now, even if--like me--you (a) make it your business to try and (b) attempt to quantify your findings by putting together ten CDs of your favorite songs, as I have for 2002. I must acknowledge right here that I ripped my idea off wholesale from Sasha Frere-Jones, who did an eight-disc 2001 set that has brought me loads of pleasure over the past few months. Since I thought 2002 was an even better year than 2001 (harder to get a grip on as a whole, of course, but even more studded with gems, especially in re: singles), I figured I could get even more goodies from it. I did, but there’s one problem: I’m not finished yet.

That’s where you come in.

Below, you will find the tracklists for the ten discs I made to celebrate 2002. What I want is for you, the music-minded reader, to show me what I missed, by making me disc 11--and 12, 13, 14, 15, or more, if need be--for which I will happily trade you one copy of any of my discs. Or more, depending on how many you want to make.

There are three hard-and-fast rules. One, CDs, not tapes. Sorry, analogue headz. Two, you can’t use any of the recordings already on my discs; I’m looking for what I missed, not to be reminded of what I caught. (Remixes and alternate versions I missed, on the other hand, are fine; unless otherwise noted, assume the version below is from the album or single.) And three, the songs you choose should be connected in a concrete way with--“made their impact during,” in Pazz & Jop-speak--2002. That means released on a 2002 album or compilation, or released in 2002 as a single. This is why I include both “Don’t Let Me Get Me” and “Underneath It All,” songs off 2001 albums, as well as several mash-up bootlegs whose creation and distribution predate 1/1/02 but which I only became aware of during the year. Similarly, the Pulseprogramming album isn’t out till February 2003, but the song was included on a Wire magazine CD, so in it goes.

Reissues are trickier terrain--you’ll notice several songs that predate 2002 by a substantial amount. Essentially, I stuck with songs that I, and presumably an audience that wasn’t targeted by the song’s initial release, was introduced to last year. Thus I include the reggae “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” (1981) and “Ulova” (1962) and “Reefer Man” (1932), but not the 12-inch version of New Order’s “Temptation” (1982), which had been out of print for years before its inclusion on the Retro box set. I’ve been reading about “Temptation” for years but wasn’t aware of “Don’t Stop” or “Ulova” or “Reefer Man” until I encountered the compilations including them. For me, they’re inextricably linked with 2002 as a year, while “Temptation,” even though I was completely unfamiliar with the original version, was already old news. Arbitrary, yes, but hopefully you see where I’m coming from.

Beyond that, my discs all last between 76 and 80 minutes, but I’m not a stickler for time on the ones you might want to make: if you’ve got 2002’s best 35-minute mix in the world (ever) and I don’t have any of it on mine, let’s have ‘er. As you can tell, I like genre-crossing mixes, but if you specialize in a style that isn’t covered enough below (some examples: jazz, dancehall/ragga, country, current African stuff--most of my Afropicks are off reissues) and want to do an entire mix of stuff from that genre, go for it; I always wanna learn more. Finally, if you don’t find much of anything at all to like on my discs, chances are you and I don’t have a tremendous amount in common tastewise, and should probably not be trading music to begin with.

Wanna participate? Just email me your tracklist(s), and I’ll send you my mailing address. I will only be making/sending discs once I’ve received yours, for reasons I hope are obvious. Also, whether or not you’re making a disc yourself, if you’re interested in the set, let me know, and we can try to set something up. Finally, if you happen to come across this way after I’ve put it up and would like to participate, there's no official expiration date, so feel free to get in touch; you never know, right?
