Okay... I admit it... I am an advertising junkie. I don't watch TV for the shows. I watch TV for the commercials. Good ones make me cry while being unable to breathe due to laughing so hard. Others make me sit in silence and wish I had the forebearance to change the channel. Sound familiar? Well, there may be a site for you... AdCritic.com

I'll have to go to the store and buy some vitamin C. This way whenever someone in the office feels sick I'll have that extra 2000 mg available to help increase my resistance.

Working on making web sites available offline for a presentation for a faculty member. Seems a lot harder than I originally thought it would be...

  • Could not get the laptop to connect to the internet
  • Could not download pages from the course server
  • Could a course server to the laptop
  • Boss had to make the web site to be displayed
Now that is a lot...

Interesting quote addressing the recent violence in schools.

I'll tell you what went wrong and it's not TV, rap music, video games or a lack of prayer in school. What went wrong is that white Americans decided to ignore dysfunction and violence when it only affected other communities, and thereby blinded themselves to the inevitable creeping of chaos which never remains isolated too long. What affects the urban "ghetto" today will be coming to a Wal-Mart near you tomorrow, and unless you address the emptiness, pain, isolation and lack of hope felt by children of color and the poor, then don't be shocked when the support systems aren't there for your kids either.

What went wrong is that we allowed ourselves to be lulled into a false sense of security by media representations of crime and violence that portray both as the province of those who are anything but white like us. We ignore the warning signs, because in our minds the warning signs don't live in our neighborhood, but across town, in that place where we lock our car doors on the rare occasion we have to drive there. That false sense of security -- the result of racist and classist stereotypes -- then gets people killed. And still we act amazed.

But listen up my fellow white Americans: your children are no better, no nicer, no more moral, no more decent than anyone else. Dysfunction is all around you, whether you choose to recognize it or not.> School Shootings and White Denial

Security Focus article titled Evaluating Anti-Virus Software for Home Use . Looks like a great reference on protecting one's computer from viruses.

Updated the movie list... apparently I am quickly approaching the 400 movie mark. Sad, isn't it? Need to come up with a very scaleable storage solution. Right now I only have a 100 count VHS rack for my favorites and store the rest in boxes. Will look for a 500 VHS media rack for the videos and move some CDs to the old rack.

Something that has tied my thoughts in knots for about a week now... this preoccupation many individuals claim to find my supposedly lofty intelligence intimidating bothers me. Really, I am not that intelligent... I usually score between a 126 to a 144 on IQ tests. School was a knack for me because teachers and testing administrators don't know how to write good tests, not because I am exceptionally intelligent. Besides, intelligence is a highly subjective concept which has thrwarted numerous attempts to be pigeon-holed as any particular thing. Most abstract concepts are like that, right? So I guess people are allowed to have their opinions and feel intimidated by something I know to not be so great.

Just checked to see if I qualify for DSL... low and behold, sure enough, I do... yet people who are closer to the central office than I cannot get DSL. Go figure!

Lots of stuff to troubleshoot today. Can't wait to break this message board thing... :)

Okay, now I am impressed... this is a tool that could be extremely useful! Ever use one of the online web storage sites? Well, I-Drive has a feature called a Dropbox where someone can leave you a file. Say you are collaborating with someone on a topic and you want them to leave you a file. They can upload it to your Dropbox rather than sending you an attachment by email. Pros:

  • web-based form upload (not too easy to spam)
  • simple interface
  • Login required
Cons:
  • only 50mb space (unless spam friends to join)
  • visitors have to enter name of account to access files... could be confusing

Hmmmmmmmm... Thinking about getting back into gaming. Will need to talk to my friends and gauge their interest of course. Don't really know anyone who is currently gaming. Haven't hardly cracked open my 3rd edition D&D books yet. Maybe I should go work on some of the stuff I was developing, such as those rules for contacts and patrons. I've also gotten those urges out of my system by writing.

Got a good amount of my picture archive online yesterday. Only to discover that there is not a ftp program here on which to download the pictures. Too many to simply save 1 at a time... will have to rethink this line of action.

Wow... This whole Presidential Search thing is going down the tubes. Looks like the faculty are trying to flaunt their collective voice and force the Chancellor to make any of the final candidates come to campus for a visit. Very against how the Chancellor would like for this to be pulled off. Here is the article at VSU's The Spectator.

Didja notice that I changed the look of the scroll bar? No? Well, get off your butt and get Internet Explorer, use no substitutes!

Delving into the mechanics of the web server. Tempted to ask Joe if we can take it down this weekend and rebuild it from scratch. Things don't work right!

Yeah... I've been absent for a bit. Been taking care of stuff (and people), but that is what we are here for, ya know? Even though I am back into the daily grind, I am almost overwhelmed by the caring and comforting wishes everyone around me has so wonderfully provided.

Nice and dreary outside. We need the rain, but at what cost? Thunderstorm warnings... tornado watches... Funny things is that just yesterday we were told that the drought would continue. Yes, I know that one measley thunderstorm will not cancel 3 years of drought conditions, but the rain will be especially nice.

Something I guess I intuitively knew, but never really considered is that online communities are exactly that... communities.

Consider that these places have areas for interacting with other members. People do the usual thing like talk to each other. I think the key is the results of the conversation... they argue, aid other, seek info, organize, dupe each other, and even fall in love. These are the same results the interaction of individuals we expect in our physical communities.

As we are individuals and each have our own expectations and point-of-view we need rules. Not so much to restrict our will as to provide guidance on expectations of behavior. People tend to move is disparate directions without a societal focus and rules help streamline processes and provide one or a few ways of doing things.

No human created body of rules are perfect. So there is always room for improvement. Thus some rules may be changed from time to time to facilitate improving processes. For online communities this means that Terms of Service agreements become ammended. As any change scares people, the changes are interpulated and some members become nervous. This adding meaning to TOSs I think is a little irrational and sometimes appears... vindictive? It almost seems like some people attempt to use changes to the TOS as rationale to distance others from the community.

Once people realize that we are all members of communities and need each other and the rules which guide us I think that our communities will once again thrive. As long as members of communities forget that they need each other the health of the community will wane until it dies.

Before I get sucked into the rant... check out the Women's Studies Conference at VSU being web cast.

How does one separate the conflict between privacy and open information acts? People have a higher expectations of openness for government than for corporations. Someone applying to become president of just about any corporation could expect their identity to not be revealed until they are a finalist for the position. Someone applying for any government job whether president of university or directory of an agency could easily be exposed by these requirements that the identities of applicants be accessible to the public. With government we want every character of data to be accessible to the public because? Because we do not trust government. We feel that for them to do an adequate job that every decision must be available to the public to make them accountable. Corporations enjoy the luxury of a smaller base of people to which they usually feel accountable... their stockholders.

Why don't we trust government? I'd suggest that much of the distrust is contrived. The media and special interest groups must make us distrust government to push their agendas.

This "us" against "them" mentality is the disease that will ultimately bring this nation to its knees. We have seen this so many times before... and yet when confronted with situations we fall into the trap over and over again. When will we learn? Some like to yell "Never!" Others like to bring complex reasons for why it has happened. Think that we will learn that cooperation does work better than confrontation when we have no where else to go.

Just 5 more visitors to The Fountain of Knowledge to hit 500. Seems the more active I am on email lists the more visitors to my web site. [Editors note: I knew that posting email to mailing lists generates traffic, just did not realize that I could get on average 2-3 visitors per email per day.]

Just need 11 more visitors to give my home page 500 visitors.

I really like Site Meter's site tracker as it even predicts how much traffic I am likely to get based upon the last hour, week, or month results.

A quote I picked up this weekend...

Men are like fine wine. They all start out like grapes, and it's up to women to stomp on them and keep them in the dark until they mature into something you'd like to have dinner with
Wish I knew the source... lots of jokes sites have it. Too many without the source to find the few that might.
