A good signature quote: Good judgment comes from experience. Experience comes from poor judgment.

From a list I read:
M: The research team believes the animals' success in completing the tasks shows baboons to be capable of analogous thinking, a trait usually only attributed to humans and chimpanzees. H: Hah! Just goes to to show you that we baboons are not as stupid as some of
you may think!

InfoWorld Article: Anthrax worm fails to spread on Net. Seems the latest social engineering virus is not as prevalent as it could be.

Think the idea of "alternate" domain providers (read rogue) is not such a good idea. First of all, computers have to be configured with additional DNS servers to query. The way companies ensure that the public gets these alternate DNS servers is to provide them as part of adware.

Who knows how all of the possibilities for the extinction of human kind? We have the biologicals such as viruses and bacteria. We have seen near misses by comets and astroids certainly large enough to wipe us out. Patterns of evolution indicate there are large spurts of evolutionary change periodically as species after species is wiped out when the Solar System passes throught a dense part of the galaxy. All it would take is one object 6 miles wide. No more humans. One scientist genetically engineering a virus, a bacteria, a primate, a mammal, a reptile accidentally (or intentially) to defeat humans on a broad scale. Nevermind a trigger happy Ukranian, Korea, American, Russian, or Chinese nuclear missle operator. What about a terrorist experimenting with an aerosol-delivered ebola virus? Anything that is highly contagious, travels through breathing, and 90% fatale could wipe out humanity. So many possibilities. We could colonize other worlds if we wanted.

Ran across this list of Windows file extensions with executable code at techtv. The value of the list is these are the file types virus writers use to infect your machince. Looks like a pretty good list. Ran across it helping the HelpDesk with an inquiry involving a file with the extension .MSC not printing. Here is another list from ZDNet. These are the file types a patch to Outlook will not allow you to run.

Added a new section over on the left: Desktops. Just a screen capture of my desktop. Will provide the thumbnail for the current one and links back to the large one for the older ones. Will not leave them at the real resolution as 1280 by 1024 is pretty big. Think 750 by 600 is good enough.

Bandits was a trip. Funny movie. Too bad Erin couldn't go. Hillarious. Feels like my memory is dying. Things I know I should know, like the director of Men in Black is Barry Sonnenfeld not Barry Levinson. That the drug is Ginko Biloba not Ginko Balboa. At least I don't munge / forget important things like my name yet.

Why is it that the cover artist is so difficult to find on a book? You have to know to flip inside the cover and scan the credits page to even have a possibility of locating the artist. How many sales of books are based upon the cover art? Maybe I am just the freak of sci-fi and fantasy readers? Books by authors I know and like draw my attention first. Books with cool cover art draw me next. Finally books with interesting titles draw me next. This looking at cover art works for me. It is how I have found some of my favorite authors: George R. R. Martin (whom I can't seem to get enough of) and Raymond E. Feist. I also found a few flops like Stephen Lawhead. Of course, I never just buy the book based on the cover art, but it gave me that first look. Kind of like meeting women anywhere. Guys notice the pretty ones first, then make the effort to talk to them. Would that mean that when I can't locate a good book I and start looking at just titles that I am "settling"? OEnone is working on her site. It has the under construction sign up. How do you contact someone who does not have any contact info on their pita to let them know that they can make use the <pre> tag to easily add those line breaks?

An NBC worker got Anthrax through the skin. If I were paranoid you would see me in a gas mask 24/7 and handling my mail only with gloves. Thankfully, I am a low-life and a third-tier university so I don't have to worry about being a target. Well, maybe by copycat, disgruntled students who have problems accesing WebCT?

Real.com should be boycotted. They are the AOL or streamed media. They force down your throat all of their excess products in one package and do not give you the opportunity to say "No!". Then you get bombarded with icons and persistent programs as you attempt to disable them from taking over. Took 1/2 an hour just to download and install RealPlayer and try to rip out RealJukebox and RealDownload which I did not want. Someone needs to to make a player which reads Real's streams. I used to prefer Real over Windows Media Player. NOt anymore.

Couple of newly discovered vulnerabilities for Windows users. Excel and Powerpoint documents are not safe any more. Specially crafted dword (dotless) URLs (dword URL for VSU) can operate in the local intranet security zone instead of the general internet zone in Internet Explorer. Most people have the local intranet zone set to medium-low level and the internet zone to medium. I of course keep both at medium (I don't trust computers from my intranet).

I've been a little lax about getting online to update this. Part computer screwup/ part being too busy. Thankfully, all that is over and now I can get back to posting. My family was in town for my gandmother's 80th birthday. Got to see almost all of my cousins and engage in great conversation over drinks at a bar while our parents slept. Some suprising behavior from some, but we had fun. Was a time to cut loose and enjoy the craziness we have been known to exhibit. After all, we dug the hole in my grandma's backyard that cracked the water main. That was a while ago. It has been a while since I last saw most some of them. A few were missing in action. They will not get to be in the family picture, but some of my cousins were not even born for the last family picture. Reach some interesting insights... Of all my cousins, only those whose name starts with an E has graduated from college so far. There are 3 of us. Of all my grandmother's children, only her sons have children which have produced grandchildren for her. What's up with that? Will have to develop pictures (don't have a digital camera yet which I will get after I get a computer for home). My Olympus is good enough for now. Will have to hookup the scanner too. That has been down since I went to W2K even though Joe got me an adapter. Will correct it soon.

Reformatting partitions. Going to run IBM's Drive Fitness Test on my bad hard drive. That happens to be a pre-requisite before returning it. Personally, I think when you see the drive light working and hear metal scraping metal, you are pretty much screwed.
