Well, the new web server is up. Now, data will need to be migrated.

Pitas was down earlier. That was disconcerting I guess. Installing the web server has been frustrating (incomplete environment settings) but finally coming along.

Section 107 of the Copyright Act of 76:
"Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 106 and 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright." Daniel Lee quoting the act http://copyright.ala.org/fair.html Items emphasised are bolded
Seems to me that the Princeton researchers who broke the SDMI encryption have a pretty good case.

Two scam artists for the price of one?

Lesson one: Get rich quick schemes make the other person rich, NOT you! Lesson two: Verify the legitimacy of any government, company, or organization agent that asks for sensitive information BEFORE you email it to them.

The remnants of Allison was good to us last night. 8 to 9 inches of rain. So what if most of it ran off, a place that felt as dry as we did needed the precipitation.

This is weird... on my VSU astrology page (for a class back in 99) I had a form to submit to a web site to do natal charts. Apparently this is HUGE stuff. Most of my traffic involves "natal chart", "horoscopes", etc. The sad thing is the service is no longer available so I had to remove the form. Sometime the search engines ought to pick up on this fact, right?

According to a Jupiter Media Matrix survey these are the places which take up most of U.S. internet users' time on the internet:
  1. AOL/Time Warner
  2. MSN
  3. Yahoo!
  4. Napster
  5. Juno
  6. eBay
  7. EA Online and Applications
  8. Excite Network
  9. iWon Inc.
  10. Walt Disney Internet Group
  11. Lycos
  12. About The Human Internet
  13. Flipside Sites
  14. CNET Networks
I see some sites I like... some which annoyed to the point of having never gone back, but amazingly I knew the address to each one without having to use a search engine. Think they have me hooked....

Did go to Bailey's Retirement Dinner Saturday night (see 2 posts down). Was not as bad as I expected. Got to hide in a back room making name tags for people whose name tag was missing or incorrect. About 15 minutes after people had sat down to eat, Joe and I snuck out to grab a pizza. Turns out those who stayed to eat were there until after 10:30pm (we left at about 7:30).

All must bow down before Bilbo of the Gatepeople, D&D pseudonym for Bill Gates. Impressive stats (Dex: 18, Int: 20, Cha: 20, hp: 1.5M) and even a character sheet. Of course his alignment is CE and he is level 33 which means he could give even Elminster or Raistlin a run for their money.

Get to dress up and work the my university's retirement gala for the president. How fun... I get to dress up and help make labels for name tags!

Who else beside obviously pimply-faced, glasses-wearing, SuperNerdz would know who Jeri Ryan is? Not that I am saying that I am not one, but... she is a not exactly super famous, right?

The movie adaptation of this book, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Winds turned me on to Anime back when almost everyone thought cartoons are only for kids. Of course I was 9 when I first saw so... :)

I like this virus warning:

Subject: DO NOT OPEN THE GIFT HORSE

WARNING! WARNING! WARNING!

IF YOU RECEIVE A GIFT IN THE SHAPE OF A LARGE WOODEN HORSE DO NOT DOWNLOAD IT!!!! It is EXTREMELY DESTRUCTIVE and will overwrite your ENTIRE CITY!

The "gift" is disguised as a large wooden horse about two stories tall. It tends to show up outside the city gates and appears to be abandoned. DO NOT let it through the gates! It contains hardware that is incompatible with Trojan programming, including a crowd of heavily armed Greek warriors that will destroy your army, sack your town, and kill your women and children. If you have already received such a gift, DO NOT OPEN IT! Take it back out of the city unopened and set fire to it by the beach.

FORWARD THIS MESSAGE TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW!

Poseidon

So it is not a REAL virus warning. I really enjoy some of the jokes that make fun of the hoaxes.

An old friend sent me an instant message. Amazes me how many become more and more internet savvy. Perhaps soon I will have have to abandon the internet at work as they take more and more of my time? Naw...

Find it interesting that companies give away subscriptions to industry rags. If you are remotely affiliated to an industry and have influence over dollars spent, then you are a prime candidate for receiving subscriptions worth $200-400 at rack-prices. Of course just about no one pays the rack prices unless one only reads one or 2 issues a year.

I do subscribe to too many rags, but I enjoy the reading. Information overload? What is that?

Changed the navigation at the Fountain Of Knowledge. It utilizes a DHTML menu script to open a menu bar. The inspiration came from this lovely lady's site called Grain of Gold. Looked up the site that built the script and used their instructions to place it on my site.
