Damn you damn you. I am consumed with your book. As usual. Got Jenna Starborn yesterday. This morning Jasc saw me reading "didn't you get that yesterday?" I was over halfway through it. And it took great GREAT will power to put it down last night. Its a sci-fi retelling of Jane Eyre, and despite some mixed reviews, I'm enjoying the hell out of it. Sure it follows the same path as Jane Eyre, so I know pretty much what's gonna happen and when, but the setting is different enough to suprise me in ways. Sure I know who is being guarded by Grace Poole, err, Gilda Parenon, but the circumstances . . . Sharon Shinn is one of those authors which make my Hugo voting totally worth it. She was nominated for the Campbell the first year I voted, so I grabbed her second book from the library - Archangel. I remember reading that on the bus to downtown LA to get to Book Nippan. And what a read it was! Angels and science and song. Hunted down her first book - the Shapechanger's Wife, which was totally different and yet just as good. So I've followed her ever since. Which doesn't mean every book thrilled me. I loved the rest of the Samaria trilogy, and Wrapt in Crystal enchanted me with its mystery and that great moment, when the pieces fall into place. But Heart of Gold kinda left me cold. Intruiging world, but the main relationship seemed contrived and the ending not quite there. Ahhh, though, Summers at Castle Auburn restored my faith. Almost a twisted fairy tale of a young bastard princess and how she is forced to grow up and take the blinders off, with some great twists. Now I just wanna finish Jenna damn it! On the up side, I was on the ball enough to figure out who to call to fix our toilet before company came over. The fact I still have to clean before they arrive is a thing of terror. Other things of note : I still suck at pool, the anti-smoking ban is being followed in places I never expected, cab rides are the suck, I must must must grovel before Rachel and the director today, 500 school age children screaming are very very frightening, I really need to learn to take off my contacts when I know I'm gonna pass out, rain sucks, cold weather and snow in April totally suck, my character Rita is shaping up to be the most evil bitch ever and I need black sneakers.
