Old man from the sea carving outside the Martime Museum, Victoria, B.C.

I found this Rumsfeld quote via a link from missanthropy.
When asked by a reporter whether torture has taken place in Iraq, U.S. Secretary of Defence Rumsfeld replied, "My impression is that what has been charged thus far is abuse, which I believe technically is different from torture." He added that he did not know "that torture took place."... from an article by Mark Rothschild

I noticed this creative use of words on a Nova documentary the other night as well. Soldiers referred to "targets" that went away or disappeared. Terms such as neutralized, collateral damage and mopping up were used often. Has the use of modern miltary technology in this war removed soldiers from the battle, to the point of no longer realising they are in fact killing other human beings? Perhaps the latest atrocities that have come to light will make Mr. Rumsfeld go away. Speaking of words, if mine have upset any of my American friends let me finish with a quote from President Bush.."I'm sorry".
