Monday, April 27, 2009 If you noticed that there seemed to be a larger number of students on campus this weekend, you would be correct! Pacific was host to the largest debate championship in the country. The National Parliamentary Debate Association’s (NPDA) National Championship tournament was held from 3/27-3/30, 2009. Over eighty schools competed with over 230 teams! Pacific did VERY well. In fact, this is the best Pacific has done at the NPDA Nationals. Pacific finished 4th overall in tournament sweepstakes and finished at Third Overall in the Nation for Season-Long Sweepstakes. Helping us to that fantastic finish were Pacific FS (Steve Farias & Emily Sheldon) who went 7-1 in prelims and made it to Octofinals. They were the tenth seed going into elimination rounds. Emily was also the 34th speaker out of 466 speakers nationwide. Not far behind was Pacific CH (Will Chamberlain & Sarah Hamid) who went 6-2 in prelims and were 22nd (Sarah) and 23rd (Will) speakers respectively. Pacific ES (Anne Eastlick and Brandon Schwartz), Pacific AK (Rich Aragon & Yasar Khan) , and Pacific BK (Tariq Bruno & Chelsea Kelleher) also advanced to the elimination rounds. The Tigers next travel to Springfield, MO, for the National Forensics Association National Championship in Individual Events and Lincoln-Douglas debate. As always here are the overall results: Tournament Sweeps: Second in the Nation! Best Finish Ever! Season-long Sweeps: Third Place in the NATION (Last minute results put Pt. Loma Nazarene University and Western Washington University ahead of us. This is STILL our best finish ever!) Team Placings Octofinalists Pacific FS (Steve Farias & Emily Sheldon) Octofinalists Pacific CH (Will Chamberlain & Sarah Hamid) Triple-Octofinalists Pacific ES (Anne Eastlick & Brandon Schwartz) Triple-Octofinalists Pacific AK (Richard Aragon & Yasar Khan) Quadra-Octofinalists Pacific BK (Tariq Bruno & Chelsea Kelleher) Octofinalists: Top 16 out of 233 teams at the tournament. finishes sixth in Lincoln-Douglas, Eighth in Individual Events at NFA Nationals On April 15-21, 2009, Pacific Speech and Debate travelled to Springfield, MO, to compete at the National Forensics Association National Tournament being co-hosted by Missouri State University and Drury University. This tournament features individual events (i.e., speeches written and present by a single student or a debate done by a single student). In our best finish in five years, Pacific tied for sixth in Lincoln-Douglas Debate and finished eighth in the country (in its division) for individual speeches. The standouts were: Steve Farias, Traiq Bruno, and Will Chamberlain. Steve made it to the quarter-final round of Lincoln-Douglas Debate (Top 8 Competitors in the country!) and was Seventh speaker overall. Tariq made it to the Quarter-Final round of Impromptu Speaking (Top 24 competitors in the country!). Will made it to the Double-Octofinal round of Lincoln-Douglas (Top 32) and was Fifth speaker overall! Also competing at the tournament and helping in achieving the 8th place sweepstakes trophy were Anne Eastlick, Sarah Hamid, Brandon Schwartz, and Emily Sheldon. Monday, March 23, 2009 Pacific
Debaters with Best Finish at NPTE ever! On March 21-23, Pacific Speech and Debate traveled to UC Berkeley to participate in the National Parliamentary Tournament of Excellence (NPTE). The NPTE is invitation-only based on season-long rankings of individual debate teams. Only the top 64 teams in the country are invited. In a first ever for Pacific, Pacific debate teams advanced to the elimination rounds! Only the top 32 teams advance and then duel it out for first place. Pacific Debate team, Pacific AK (Richard Aragon / Yasar Khan), finished the tournament in 20th place and Pacific FS (Steve Farias and Emily Sheldon) took 25th place out of the best of the best debaters in the country! This is an AMAZING accomplishment and please help me congratulate them as they—and the entire team—start to prepare for the NPDA National Championship that starts on Friday at Pacific. First Overall On January 30-31, Pacific Speech and Debate travelled to Santa Clara University for the 2009 Father Copeland Invitational. Taking eight debate teams, Pacific did very well, taking first over all other schools with more than twice the points of the second place school. Helping contribute to this win was the team of Pacific CH (Will Chamberlain and Sarah Hamid) who went undefeated in preliminary rounds and took third place in the tournament. Also assisting were Steve Farias and Emily Sheldon who took first and second speaker, respectively. Pacific next travels to Pt. Loma Nazarene University for the Sunset Cliffs classic on Febrary 5-9, 2009. In parliamentary debate, the team of Pacific MS (BJ McCollister & Julia Sweeney) took second place in the Talk Hawk Round Robin earning themselves $100 in the process. Not to be outdone, Emily Sheldon, took first in individual events sweepstakes and earned $75! These placings—and many others—put Pacific in First place for four year schools and first place overall by 30+ points over its closest rival. The team next travels to the Father Copeland Debate Invitational at Santa Clara University on January 30-31, 2009. Competing only in individual events and Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Pacific finished 5th overall out of twenty-seven schools. This was primarily because of four individuals: Tariq Bruno, Will Chamberlain, Steve Farias and Yasir Khan! Tariq & Will did well in all of their events (Impromptu, Extemporaneous, & Debate) while Yasir took first in LD on Sunday and Steve was first speaker in debate on Sunday. This is a very good test of nationals in LD, so we are hopeful we can do even better in April. On November 7-9, 2008, Pacific played host to the largest regular-season forensics tournament in the country this year. The weekend consisted of the Mustang Invitational, the Pat Kennedy Round Robin, and the Paul Winters Invitational. Over six hundred people came to Pacific to compete against 59 schools from around the country! IN a first for Pacific, a Pacific debate team, Pacific FS (Steve Farias and Emily Sheldon) were not only the first and second speakers at the Round Robin, but they were also in the final round! They debated a topic derived from a talk given by Dr. Laura Rademacher who is a geology professor at Pacific! Also, during the weekend, Tariq Bruno beat out 81 competitors to finish first in Impromptu speaking as well as fight off over fifty competitors in Lincoln Douglas debate to finish third! Also, Steve Farias was the second speaker in Open Parliamentary debate out of almost TWO HUNDRED competitors! All of this (and so much more listed below) resulted in Pacific earning 25% of ALL of the possible points for the weekend! This was almost twice as many as its closest competitor! Even though we could not award ourselves the first place trophy, we nonetheless were the tops for the Paul Winters Invitational and tops for the entire weekend! Pacific Speech and Debate wants to thank everyone who helped make this a success. From faculty to staff, to students and local community members, it was a great event and Pacific shone! 4th year in a row! Bright (okay, not so bright, it was 6 am and still dark) and early Saturday, November 1, Pacific Speech and Debate piled in cars and drove to UC Berkeley for the Golden Gate Invitational and for the fourth year in a row, Pacific was first in Individual Events, Second in Debate and First Overall!!! Out of over twenty schools, UC Berkeley included, Pacific was tops! It only could have happened with all of the extraordinary effort that the entire team put in and the results tell the tale. Indeed, Pacific debater, Steven Farias, even made it to the second elimination round with only a novice debater from another school as his partner! Steve also was first in Extemporaneous Speaking and and fifth in Impromptu speaking. Definitely, a great addition to our success. Will Chamberlain also did exceptionally well. He and his partner, Sarah Hamid, made it to the second elimination round in debate AND Will placed first in Informative Speaking, third in Extemporaneous Speaking, and fourth in Impromptu Speaking. Sarah also placed first in Impromptu Speaking! Here are the individual placings. As always, this is for informational purposes and is not necessarily intended for publication. University in Azusa, California for the California Double-up. This weekend was packed with FOUR
tournaments in three days! After a
grueling competition, Pacific finished first overall out of thirty-two
schools!! Of particular note was
Pacific FS’ (Steve Farias & Emily Sheldon) First
place finish in Parliamentary Debate on Friday and Steve Farias’
and Tariq Bruno’s first and second place (respectively) finish in Impromptu
Speaking! Or perhaps it was that Pacific had eight of the ten top speakers at the first
debate tournament AND six of ten in the second! In only her second tournament EVER, Julia Sweeney took third
place in Open Impromptu and sixth in Open Extemp! Amazing stuff! As always what follows are the

On October 2, 2008, the Pacific Speech & Debate team traveled to Laramie, Wyoming, for the annual “Top of the Rockies” tournament held by the University of Wyoming. In the best finish Pacific has ever had at this tournament, Pacific finished third out of twenty-two schools! Pacific Lincoln-Douglas debater, Tariq Bruno, finished third and Parliamentary debater, Sarah Hamid, finished second speaker out of almost 90 debaters! Three Pacific debate teams broke to elimination rounds [Pacific FS (Steve Farias & Emily Sheldon) – Quarter-Finalists; Pacific CH (Will Chamberlain & Sarah Hamid) – Octofinalists; and Pacific AK (Richard Aragon & Yasir Khan) – Double-Octofinalists] and Chelsea Kelleher did very well in her individual events. Kelleher Monday, September 29, 2008 Pacific Dominates Debate in Season Openers! On September 28, 2008, Pacific Speech and Debate finished up a VERY successful weekend of speech and debate competition. Not only did Pacific finish third overall out of a number of schools, but they ended the debate portion two rounds EARLY because Pacific debate teams were the only ones left in the competition! Pacific debate teams were the top four teams to qualify for the elimination rounds. After each defeating their opponents in the quarter-final round, only Pacific teams remained! There was no need to hold a semi-final or a final round because Pacific won no matter what! This combined with a very good showing in the individual events allow Pacific to finish third out of twenty-nine schools! Not to be outdone, one Pacific debate team (Steve Farias & Emily Sheldon) traveled to the Claremont National Debate Open and finished with a 7-1 record and was the top seed advancing to elimination rounds where they finished as quarter-finalists! The team next travels to the University of Wyoming for the “Top of the Rockies” tournament on October 2! What follows is a detailed listing of all of the results from this fantastic weekend and is, as always, not intended for publication. Parliamentary
