Wednesday, April 30, 2008 Pacific has best NFA Results in ten years! Pacific finishes 6th in the nation in
Lincoln-Douglas Debate On April 17, 2008, Pacific Speech and Debate traveled to
Nashville, Tennessee, to compete at the National Forensic Association’s
National Championship. Over 80
schools were in attendance with over 600 competitors. Pacific students did amazingly well! Indeed, it is the best Pacific has done
at NFA in over ten years! In
Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Steven Farias and Broc Maples were advanced to the
double-octofinal round, placing them in the top 32 of over 100 debaters in the
country! This meant that Pacific
placed sixth out of all schools doing Lincoln-Douglas debate at the tournament! An outstanding accomplishment and the
best Pacific has EVER done in L-D Debate! In individual events, Emily Sheldon advanced to the
quarter-final round of impromptu speaking, placing her in the top 24 out of
over 250 speakers! Steven Farias
narrowly missed advancing to elimination rounds in extemporaneous speaking, he
was 27th out of over 300 speakers! Emily and Dr. Bates next travel to the Interstate Oratory
Competition. This is the oldest
forensics competition in the country (over 150 years old) and features no more
than the best two students from each state in the nation! Tuesday, March 18, 2008 Pacific Debaters
Accomplish Best Finish Ever At The National
Parliamentary Tournament of Excellence On March 13-18, Pacific debate teams traveled to Tacoma, WA,
for the National Parliamentary Tournament of Excellence (NPTE). It was already an historic trip
because—for the first time ever—Pacific had qualified three teams
to compete against the best 54 teams in the nation. It is a grueling tournament. You need seven ballots to break into the elimination
rounds. The most Pacific debaters
have gotten before is five ballots and those were very hard-won. This year Pacific FS (Steve Farias
& Emily Sheldon) won SIX ballots for our best showing ever! Although, they did not break to
elimination rounds, this finish actually raises their national ranking to 26th
in the nation: the best FINISH of ANY TEAM in Pacific’s NPTE history! Not only did they finish well as a
team, but Emily Sheldon was 34th Speaker out of 108 total speakers
at the tournament! Pacific EM (Anne Eastlick & Broc Maples) won a very
respectable four ballots, almost tying the record for Pacific previous finishes
at NPTE. Pacific Speech & Debate next travels on March 26th
to the US Air Force Academy for the National Parliamentary Debate Association’s
National Championship. Starting in
April, PSDS will compete at three more national championships focusing on
individual speeches. Monday, March 3, 2008 Pacific Speech & Debate Ranked 2nd
in California! Best Finish in Fifteen Years! On Feb 29 – March 2, 2008, Pacific Speech and Debate competed at what amounts to the State Championships for four-year colleges and universities. After sixteen rounds of competition, Pacific was ranked second in California’s season-long sweepstakes! This represents Pacific’s success in individual events (debate is counted by other organizations—we are actually higher in debate). As a demonstration of how Pacific is dominating in individual events, ALL of the competitors in the final round of Extemporaneous Speaking were from Pacific! Of especial importance was that Emily Sheldon was elected to represent all Northern California colleges and universities at the AFA-NIET (American Forensics Association National Individual Event Tournament) in April. She also qualified four events to nationals. This is very indicative of Pacific’s prominence in the region and nationally! This is also the best Pacific has done in Individual Events in more than ten years! Their coach, Dr. Marlin Bates, (Asst. Prof in Communication) was also elected the director for NEXT year’s District Championship meet! When asked to comment, Dr. Bates stated, “Like debate, we qualified quite a few more people than I was expecting in this rebuilding year, but I welcome it!!” As always, the following individual results are for informational purposes only and are not necessarily intended for publication. Shine at Whitman This weekend, Pacific Speech and Debate traveled to Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington. Over three days of some intense competition, Pacific finished second overall in sweepstakes, had some individual speech champions and did very well in debate against some very tough teams. Of particular note was Broc Maples who was the Extemporaneous Speaking Champion and second in Impromptu Speaking. The debate team of Pacific FS (Steve Farias & Emily Sheldon) did very well advancing to the Quarter-Finals in both tournaments! Pacific’s next tournament will be on campus on 2/29-3/2 As always, the following information is a) not necessarily intended for publication and b) all results can also be seen at http://psds.pitas.com/ Whitman Classic I Parliamentary Debate Speakers Eighth Steve Farias 15th Broc Maples 16th Anne Eastlick 19th Emily Sheldon Placings Quarter-Finalists Pacific FS (Steve Farias & Emily Sheldon) Whitman Classic II Individual Events Extemporaneous Speaking Champion Broc Maples Third Anne Eastlcik Impromptu Speaking Second Broc Maples Finalist Anne Eastlick Persuasive Speaking Second Emily Sheldon (This qualifies her speech to the AFA-NIET) Parliamentary Debate Speakers Eighth Emily Sheldon Placings Quarter-Finalists Pacific FS Monday, February 11, 2008 Pacific Northern California Champions!! Pacific Debaters First and Second in Northern
California!! Pacific selected to represent NorCal at Interstate
Oratory Competition!! This weekend, Pacific Speech and Debate traveled to Diablo Valley College to compete in the Northern California Forensic Association’s Championship tournament. After competing against 30+ schools from Northern California (and some Southern California ones), Pacific came out on top in a NUMBER of areas. Of special highlight was the fact that Pacific debate teams Richard Aragon & Will Chamberlain (Pacific AC) and Steve Farias & Emily Sheldon (Pacific FS) were first and second in open parliamentary debate. Also, Pacific debaters “closed out” Lincoln Douglas debate at QUARTERS! This means that at the break to elimination rounds, only Pacific debaters were in elimination rounds after the quarter-final round! Eight debaters break to quarters, we had SEVEN and defeated the eighth in that round! Additionally, for the first time in Pacific’s history, Emily Sheldon was selected as the Northern California representative at the Interstate Oratory Competition, the oldest forensics competition in the country! Also, Steve Farias was named the Shannon Valdivia speaker of the tournament for being the most successful competitor at the tournament! This is the first time Pacific has won this award! Pacific Finishes 6th out of 59 schools! This weekend, Pacific
Speech and Debate traveled to Pt. Loma Nazarene University to compete at the
Sunset Cliffs Classic against fifty-nine other schools from around the
country. Although we travelled with only part of the squad, we
had our best showing in debate *ever* at Pt. Loma, three debate teams
broke to the elimination rounds. Indeed, Pacific FS (Emily Sheldon &
Steve Farias) were undefeated in the preliminary rounds! Pacific AC (William
Chamberlain & Richard Aragon) not only made it to the elimination rounds but
advanced to the Octofinal round. Pacific EM (Anne Eastlick & Broc
Maples) were the third Pacific debate team to qualify for the Double Octofinal
round. This really was a banner year in debate for Pacific.
Additionally, Brandon Schwartz finished fourth out of fourty-one other
competitors in Extemporaneous Speaking. All of these wins enable Pacific
to finish Sixth out of all other schools competing at the Sunset Cliffs. As always the following individual information is not necessarily for publication. For the second year in a row, Pacific Speech and Debate traveled to the SF Bay Area to compete in the local Gladiator Speech Invitational against eleven other local schools and universities. For the second year in a row, Pacific dominated the other schools, earning 150+ points with its nearest competitor more than 60 points away! In debate, Pacific “closed out” the event, meaning that only Pacific debaters were in the final round! Pacific Debaters Anne Eastlick and Broc Maples went undefeated throughout the entire tournament. Steve Farias and Emily Sheldon also did well in debate, but they REALLY shined in their individual events by earning over sixty sweepstakes points for the squad! Finally, Brandon Schwartz was the champion in Open Impromptu Speaking beating out all other competitors INCLUDING four of his teammates in the final round! The team’s next tournament is the very competitive Sunset Cliffs Classic at Pt. Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, CA. Brandon Schwartz takes 4th Overall for the Tournament! This past weekend, Pacific Speech and Debate hosted the largest speech and debate tournament in the country for the Fall semester. With over fourty schools from at least ten states, it represented a very competitive tournament! By doing well in both individual events and debate, Pacific finished second overall for the weekend. We did not give ourselves a trophy, but the facts speak for themselves! Of special import is the fact that Sophomore Brandon Schwartz took fourth place overall out of ALL individual events speakers at BOTH the Mustang Invitational and the Paul Winters Invitational. This is a very difficult feat and should be duly noted. Additionally, Brandon and his partner, Jill Rifkind, tied for third place in the Junior Division of Parliamentary debate. Pacific is done with tournaments for the Fall Semester and is taking a much need rest to gear up for next year! University in Southern California and placed second overall out of thirty-five
schools from California, Arizona, Nevada, and Texas! It was the first travel tournament for the entire squad this
year and everybody on the team contributed to the win! This was also a “swing” tournament,
meaning that in three days, there were two complete tournaments! In
Lincoln-Douglas debate, Pacific dominated the event, with Pacific having six
out of the thirteen octofinalists.
Sophomore Emily Sheldon placed second and Junior Steven Farias placed
third. In the junior division of
Parliamentary debate, the team of Chelsea Kelleher and Isaac Molsee placed
first. In the second half of the
swing, the team of Nolan Long and Youa Yang also placed first in the junior
division. Pacific missed first
placed overall by only 8 points:
Pacific had a total of 143 points and Arizona State had 151 points! (What follows is a complete listing of the awards won by the

LY (Nolan Long & Youa Yang) Pacific Speech and Debate Squad Take First Overall Pacific Speech and Debate Takes First in Debate Pacific Debaters take Second! On October 6 & 7, Pacific Speech and Debate traveled to
Concordia University in Irvine, CA.
With 15+ other schools in attendance such as Pt. Loma Nazarene, UC San
Diego, and Arizona State, Pacific speakers accumulated the most points of every
squad there! Doing exceptionally
well were Pacific’s debaters. The
Lincoln-Douglas debaters “closed-out” the tournament at the semi-finals
(Meaning ALL debaters in that round were Pacific!). The Parliamentary debate team Pacific FS (Steve Farias/Emily
Sheldon) took second place in senior division with a record of 12-3! The only loss was in finals! Steve also was the overall winner in Open
Impromptu Speaking. Individual
speakers also did very well.
Chelsea Kelleher finished second in open prose interpretation and Anne
Eastlick was first in the novice division. All in all it was a very good showing for Pacific. This finishes four tournaments in a row
for the Pacific squad. They get
this weekend off and then they compete at four more tournaments in a row! If you want to know the complete

Pacific Squad Ties
for Third in Season Opener! In Laramie, Wyoming, the University Speech and Debate Team battled it out with thirty other schools and in the end, were victorious! In overall sweepstakes, the Pacific squad tied for third with Texas Tech University. The entire team helped in this win by competing in numerous events, three weeks of hard practice and everyone on the 25+ team pitching in to do research. Here is how it all settled out: In Individual Events: Ariana Grova (‘08) : 5th place in Informative Speaking 6th place in Programmed Oral Interpretation Raymond Candler (2012): Quarter-finalist in Lincoln-Douglas Debate (his 1st college tournament ever!) **This also qualifies Raymond to the National tournament! He is the first one to qualify this year and is a freshman! Broc Maples (’12) Seventh Place Speaker in Lincoln-Douglas Debate Isaac Molsee (’13) Ninth place Speaker in Lincoln-Douglas Debate In Parliamentary Debate: Junior Division Pacific EM (Anne Eastlick ’09 & Broc Maples) Second Place Pacific AC (Richard Aragon ’11 & Raymond Candler) Third Place This was an exciting part of the tournament. This was Broc’s first college tournament and he and Anne had only debated together in practice. In a field of 60+ teams, Anne & Broc debated a total of eleven rounds in a 36 hour period. The final round did not start until ONE A.M.!!! But, in a close 2-1 decision, they emerged in second place. Unfortunately, the tournament forced Pacific EM and Pacific AC to debate in the semi-finals, thereby preventing Pacific from closing out the final round!! However, this is an outstanding start to what looks like a great semester. It should be noted that Pacific FS (Steve Farias & Emily Sheldon) as well as Pacific KM (Chelsea Kelleher & Isaac Molsee) barely missed making it to the elimination rounds. However, the points they earned (along with EM & AC’s points), gives Pacific a great start to the season-long rankings! The Pacific Speech team travels to UC Berkeley for the Northern California season opener with over twenty people! | |
