Pacific is 11th in Nation at NFA!
For the final tournament of the year, PSDS travelled to Akron Ohio for the National Forensic Associations' National Tournament. Out of hundreds of schools and thousands of competitors, Pacific placed 11th in its division. This is due in large part to Jacki Evans' 20th place finish in Informative Speaking and Jeff Toney's 26th place finish in Extemporaneous Speaking. This was a nice capper to the INCREDIBLE year PSDS has had. We can only hope that next year is even better!

March, 2005
Pacific Ranks 27th in NATION in Parliamentary Debate!
March 17-21, 2005. With very little break, PSDS traveled to the National Parliamentary Debate Association National Tournament in Lubbock, Texas. Pacific took three teams to NPDA this year. Cynthia Parrish & Branigan Robertson, Jacki Evans & Kyle Gundlach, and Jeff Toney & Kathleen Bruce all competed at this very difficult tournament. Placing in the top 50 teams, Cynthia & Branigan were Quadra-finalists. Based on the win-loss records of all three teams as well as the break to finals, Pacific placed 27th out of 78 schools in the tournament. This tournament also determines the best SCHOOLS in Parliamentary Debate for all year long,. Pacific, this year, was proud to be ranked 34th out of every school in the nation! Over 300 schools compete in Parliamentary debate nationwide and Pacific bested over 90 percent of them!

Pacific Ranks Two Teams to the NPTE!
March 10-14, 2005. Traveling to St. Paul, Minnesota, Pacific Speech and debate did something it had never before accomplished! Every year, the top 48 parliamentary debate teams in the nation are invited to compete at the National Parliamentary Tournament of Excellence. These 48 teams are selected based on their overall year-long record and are out over seven hundred debate teams from hundreds of schools! This year PSDS was honored to be invited to send two of our teams to the NPTE. Jacki Evans & Kyle Gundlach were selected as the 38th team in the nation, while Cynthia Parrish & Branigan Robertson were selected as the 41st best team. After some very fierce competition, Jacki & Kyle finished 34th and Branigan & Cynthia finished 42nd. Pacific was among only very few schools who were invited to send more than one team!

February, 2005
Pacific is First Overall in Western States!
February 18-20, 2005. This weekend, over 40 schools attended the Western States Communication Association Tournament. This prestigious event is one of the best speech tournaments in the Western United States. Schools such as Willamette, University of Utah, Northern Arizona University, CSU, Long Beach, Lewis & Clark and many others were in attendance. Out of every school there, The University of the Pacific placed First in Individual Events and First Overall. It took every member of the team doing well and well they did. In Open Parliamentary Debate, the Team of Jacki Evans and Kyle Gundlach were Octofinalists. Jacki was also rated the second-best speaker out of all sixty-two contestants. In Junior Parliamentary Debate, the team of Raman Deol and Dana Simas were also Octofinalists. Raman was rated the fifth-best speaker out of all 70 contestants. The Team of Maxwell Sumner and Phillip Krueger were also Octofinalists. In the Open Division of Extemporaneous Speaking, Pacific had four of six people in final rounds! Jeff Toney placed first and Melissa Sanders placed third while Kathleen Bruce and Jacki Evans were finalists. These results qualifed all four for the National Forensics Tournament in Ohio later this year. Additionally, Jeff & Melissa qualified for the American Forensics Association National Invitational Tournament. In the Junior Division of Extemp., Dana Simas was a finalist. In Open Informative Speaking, Jacki Evans placed third. This qualified her speech for both NFA Nationals and AFA Nationals. In the Open division of Impromptu, Pacific again dominated with three oout of seven contestants in the final round. After the dust settled, Jeff Toney placed first, Jacki Evans third, and Phillip Krueger fourth. Finally, the Duo Interpretation team of Jacki Evans and Kyle Gundlach placed First in the Open division.

February, 2005
Pacific Takes First at NCFA Champs!
February 11-13, 2005. This weekend at the Northern California Forensics Association (NCFA) Championship Tournament, the University of the Pacific Forensics Team took first out of twenty-eight schools! Pacific's team amassed 149 points and their nearest competitor had only 125! In Open Impromptu Jeff Toney took first, Melissa Sanders placed third while Cynthia Parrish and Kyle Gundlach were finalists. In Junior Impromptu, Branigan Robertson was a finalist, while in Novice Impromptu, Raman Deol placed second. In Open Informative, Jacki Evans placed second with her speech on Ingratiation. In Open Extemporaneous Speaking Melissa Sanders placed second and Cynthia Parrish and Jeff Toney were finalists. In Junior Extemporaneous, Branigan Robertson placed first and in Novice Extemp, Raman Deol placed first, Dana Simas placed second and Jeffrey Morgan was a finalist. In Novice After Dinner Speaking, Cynthia Parrish placed third. In Novice Poetry Interpretation, Kathleen Bruce placed first. In Open Parliamentary Debate, Pacific did extraordinarily well! The teams of Kathleen Bruce/Jeff Toney & Cynthia Parrish/Branigan Robertson tied for third place overall and the team of Jacki Evans/Kyle Gundlach took second on a split decision in the final round. Not to be outdone, the Junior Parliamentary teams of Phillip Krueger & Maxwell Sumner and Raman Deol & Dana Simas were in the top 25 percent of the field by making it to the quarter-final round.

Pacific Takes Second at Twohy!
January 28-30, 2005. With only five members of the team present, PSDS took Second overall at the Kevin Twohy Forensics Classic out of over twenty schools! Raman Deol & Dana Simas placed second overall in Parliamentary Debate (Novice) and Jeff Toney & Kathleen Bruce placed third overall (Open). In individual events, Raman took first in Impromptu and Extemp. Jeff Toney placed first in Open Extemp and Open Impromptu. Dana Simas also placed second in Novice Impromptu!

Pacific Flies High at US Air Force Academy
The Pacific Speech and Debate Team has succeeded once again, this time on a national level. The performance of the PSDS at the United States Air Force Academy this past weekend serves as an example of the stellar performance Pacific maintains. Competition at the USAFA Forensics classic was intense. The best schools in forensics were in attendance. The schools ranged from the University of South Carolina, Truman State University, Western Kentucky, University of Oregon, CSU Long Beach, Northern Arizona University, the University of Florida and many others. In the face of tough competition from over forty schools, the University of the Pacific placed twentieth! With only twelve students, the Pacific Speech and Debate team had several notable successes. Specifically, Melissa Sanders placed sixth in Extemporaneous Speaking out of sixty-six competitors. Melissa also was in the top twelve out of over seventy competitors in Impromptu Speaking. Kimberlyn White-Tupper received fifth out of twenty-two competitors in Informative Speaking. Jeff Toney placed in the top ten in Impromptu Speaking. Jacki Evans placed first out of over twenty competitors in Informative Speaking. With this first place, Jacki is now qualified to attend the national tournament in Informative speaking. In debate, the team of Cynthia Parrish and Branigan Robertson finished in the top thirty out of over one hundred Parliamentary debate teams. The team next travels to Pleasant Hill for the Kevin Twohy Invitational on January 28-30. On Febraury 3, the team will travel to San Diego to compete against over fifty nationally-ranked schools in the Sunset Cliffs Classic. The ability for the team to compete on the national circuit would not have been possible if it were not for the support of the College of the Pacific and a generous donation from the Janet M, Grave foundation.

Pacific Takes First at Mustang Invitational!
This weekend the University of the Pacific Speech and Debate team traveled to San Joaquin Delta College for Speech Competition. The twenty-four members of the team attended the Mustang Speech Invitational at Delat College placed First overall against teams from fifteen schools from the Western United States, such as Stanford, UC, Davis, and others. This was the last tournament of the semester Individual members of the team also did very well. In Parliamentary Debate: Open Division: 1. The teams of Jacki Evans & Kyle Gundlach as well as the team of Cynthia Parrish & Branigan Robertson tied for third place. 2. The teams of Rebecca Nguyen & Melissa Sanders as well as the team of Prince White and Sandeep Vishwa finished in the top twenty-five percent of the field (Quarter-Finalists). 3. Cynthia Parrish was the 2nd best speaker, Rebecca Nguyen was fifth, Prince White, sixth and Melissa Sanders was eighth. Junior Division: 1. The team of Phillip Krueger and Maxwell Sumner took third place. Novice Division: 1. The team of Spencer Ton & Ruman Deol took third place. 2. Andrea Vuturo was the best speaker in Novice. Ruman Deol took fourth. In Interpretive Events: 1. The Duo Interp team of Branigan Robertson and Kyle Gundlach took first place (Open division) 2. In Oral Interpretation, Kyle Gundlach took third (Open Division). 3. In Dramatic Interp., Prince White placed First (Open Division). 4. In Prose Interp, Kyle Gundlach placed First (Open Div.) and Muna Haddad was a finalist (Novice Div). 5. In Poetry Interp, Prince White placed First (Open Div.) In Public Speaking Events: 1. Rebecca Nguyen placed Second in Communication Analysis. 2. Jacki Evans Placed First and Kristen Pace placed Second in Informative speaking (Open Div.) In Limited Preparation Events: 1. Melissa Sanders placed second, Prince White and Jacki Evans were finalists in Impromptu (Open Div) 2. Jeffrey Morgan and Spencer Ton were finalists in Impromptu (Novice Div.) 3. Melissa Sanders placed second in Extemporaneous Speaking (Open Division) 4. Ruman Deol placed third, Hans Carnice and Dana Simas were Finalists in Extemporaneous Speaking (Novice Div.) All members of the team work very hard and some of them missed going to the final round by only a few points. Coach Marlin Bates stated, “This is a great place for the team to be before next semester. We have some very tough tournaments in the Spring and this will helps us do well!

PSDS SoCal Results
This weekend the University of the Pacific Speech and Debate team traveled to Southern California for two tournaments: The Reelympics Speech Tournament at Mt. San Antonio College and the Azusa Pacific University Cougar Classic. Eight members of the team attended the tournament and did very well against schools such as USC, UCLA, UC, San Diego, Arizona State, and UC Berkeley Individual members of the team did very well. Cynthia Parrish placed fourth in Open Impromptu Speaking at the Cougar Classic Jacki Evans placed fifth in Informative Speaking at the Mt. SAC tournament and placed Fifth at Azusa Pacific in Informative Speaking. Jacki and her partner Kyle Gundlach also placed Sixth in Duo Interpretation at Azusa Pacific. Branigan Robertson and his partner Kyle Gundlach placed third in Duo Interpretation. Branigan also placed Sixth in Informative Speaking at the Cougar Classic. Rebecca Nguyen placed Sixth in Extemporaneous Speaking at Mt. SAC and was a Semi-finalist in Extemp at the Cougar Classic. Prince White placed Third in Lincoln-Douglas debate against a very tough Northern Arizona University squad. Prince also was a semi-finalist in Impromptu Speaking at the Cougar Classic. All members of the team work very hard and some of them missed going to the final round by only a few points. Pacific Takes Third at SRJC!
This weekend the University of the Pacific Speech and Debate team traveled to Santa Rosa Junior College for the Santa Rosa Forensics Invitational. Seventeen members of the team attended the tournament and placed third against such schools as Stanford, San Francisco State and others. Individual members of the team did very well. Prince White won Best Overall Parliamentary Debate Speaker in Open Division as well as being a quarter-finalist in the Parli debate rounds with his Partner Elmo Menefee. Prince also placed Second in Open Poetry Interpretation and Second in Open Impromptu Speaking. Senior Cynthia Parrish and her partner, Branigan Robertson, were also quarter-finalists in Parli debate. In addition, Cynthia placed fourth in Open Impromptu and fourth in Open Extemporaneous Speaking. No to be outdone, novices Dana Simas and Muna Haddad were Octo-finalists in Parliamentary Debate. Dana Simas was Fifth Best Speaker in Novice Parliamentary Debate. Muna Haddad, in her first tournament, placed First in Novice Prose Interpretation. Muna also placed Third in Duo Interpretation with her partner Kimberly Barberis. Pacific did very well in Extemporaneous Speaking as well. Freshman Phillip Krueger placed First and Sandeep Vishwa placed Third in Junior Division. Spencer Ton placed Fourth in Novice division. Kristin Pace also did very well. Krisitin plaxed Second in Open Informative Speaking and Sixth in Open Prose Interpretation. Also, Kyle Gundlach and Branigan Robertson placed Third in Open Duo Interpretation. Team Captain Jacki Evans also placed Sixth in Open Impromptu. All members of the team work very hard and some of them missed going to the final round by only a few points. Coach Marlin Bates stated, “I am so glad to see us improving as a team.” On October 14, the team will be traveling to Southern California for a grueling four-day tournament against very tough competition.

Pacific's Does Well in First Weekend of the Year
This weekend the University of the Pacific Speech and Debate team traveled to CSU, Fresno and the University of Wyoming for Speech Competitions. The ten members of the team attended the Raisin Center Speech Invitational at CSU, Fresno. UOP placed sixth overall against much larger teams from thirty-five schools from the Western United States, such as Arizona State, USC, University of Nevada at Reno, Berkeley, and San Francisco State. This was the first tournament of the season Individual members of the team did very well. Linda Truong and Phillip Krueger placed third in Novice Parliamentary Debate. Linda also received an award for being the fifth top speaker out of all other debaters in her division. Sandeep Vishwa placed third in Junior Parliamentary debate. Rebecca Nguyen placed third in Communication Analysis with her speech that analyzed messages from the internet site “Craig’s List.” Linda Truong placed third in Novice Impromptu Speaking. Phillip Krueger placed fourth in Novice Impromptu speaking. Prince White placed second in Open Impromptu speaking as well as third in Open Poetry Interpretation. Melissa Sanders received fourth place in Open Impromptu. Dana Simas earned third place in Novice dramatic Interpretation. At the same time some of the team was in Fresno, other members of the team were in Wyoming competing at the “Top of The Rockies” Invitational Speech Tournament. The Team of Cynthia Parrish and Branigan Robertson made it to the quarter-final round of parliamentary debate. This means that they were in the top 25% of their field. The team of Jacki Evans and Kyle Gundlach also did very well by advancing to the octofinal round of Parliamentary debate. All members of the team work very hard and some of them missed going to the final round by only a few points. Coach Marlin Bates stated, “This is a great start for the team and they will only get better!”
