Director of Forensics, Shawn Batt, will be leaving the University and moving to Michigan. His wife, Nicole, has been granted an exciting position in the Telecommunication, Information Studies, and Media Department at Michigan State University. After celebrating his departure, the team has vowed to survive without him and looks forward to meeting their future coach. This past weekend, the University of the Pacific hosted the Northern California Forensics Association Championship Tournament. 280+ students from 31 colleges and universities attended the event, competing in two different formats of team debate as well as 11 different individual events in novice, junior, and open divisions.

The big news for the Pacific Speech & Debate Society is the performance of Jacki Evans ('06, Pol. Sci) and Cynthia Parrish ('05, Business Law), who earned a perfect 6-0 prelim record in Open Division Parliamentary Debate before progressing through quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals to win the tournament.

Pacific golfer and Communication major, Miles Kirkpatrick, also made a good showing for us in his first tournament. Miles and his partner, Brian Foster of Foothill College, earned 12th seed (out of 37) in the Novice Division. They dropped out in Octafinals, but still came away with 3rd (Foster) and 9th (Kirkpatrick) best speaker ratings in the event (out of 74).

In individual events, Natalie Lewis ('06, Speech Path) was a finalist in Prose and 4th place in Dramatic Duo (w/ Kristin Pace, '07, Comm).

Pacific hosted a one-day British Parliamentary debate tournament this past Saturday, January 24. 22 two-person teams from 9 schools attended, including two teams from South Korea. Congrats to Cynthia Parrish ('05, Business Law) and Jacki Evans ('06, Pol. Sci.) for making 3rd place in our tournament after earning a 4-0 preliminary round record and besting San Jose State and Delta College in semifinals. The final round found Jacki and Cynthia advocating stricter Mercury emissions standards against three UC Davis teams, including the 6th and 9th ranked teams in the nation. Jacki also won 2nd place in the individual speaker ratings at the tournament.

Jacki and Cynthia are in serious contention for a bid to the NPTE tournament now. Thanks to everyone for helping out, especially Carol, Dean, Russ, and Cathy. Oh, and Eugmar for coming up to judge. Thanks to Anthony and Natalie and Brannigan for coming out to support our team in elims. Thanks to Kristin for being flexible and debating with a hybrid partner from CSU Hayward.

The Pacific Study Break Tournament was a great success this past weekend. 13 schools attended and participated in British Format Parliamentary Debate as well as 11 different individual events.

Pacific field a large number of competitors at the event because of the Comm 114 Argumentation class. Overall, the class thought the tournament was a worthwhile learning experience.

Several people in the class deserve praise. In particular, Sandy Goldberg earned a 3rd place individual speaker rating (out of 72 in the field). Other top twenty finishers included Ki Kallbrier (7th place), Sadye Reish (15th), David Doubley (16th) and Rachel DeRonde (20th). The team of Ki Kallbrier and Sadye Reish finished 4th in the tournament (out of 36 teams in novice division).

Members of the PSDS also made a good showing at the tournament. In the open division of debate, Cynthia Parrish and Jacki Evans were semifinalists after placing first or second in all four of their prelim rounds.

In individual events, the team amassed the following awards:

Kristen Pace (4th in Persuasion, 2nd in Informative, 2nd in Prose)
Cynthia Parrish (2nd in Impromptu, 1st in Extemp)
Natalie Lewis (3rd in POI)
Jacki Evans (3rd in Drama)
Ashley Carrera (1st in Impromptu)
Dayna Bryant (4th in Drama, 3rd in Informative)
Lewis and Pace (4th in Duo Drama)

Pacific was first place in overall sweeps for the University division. Congrats!
