We are looking forward to two new coaches joining the team this coming Fall: Dean Gundlach (formerly DOF at CEU) and Carol Green (from Wyoming).
Both of these folks are outstanding, and we are honored to have them with us.

Okay, so the year is pretty much over. We had a great bbque at coach Russ' house last Saturday. We sent two teams to NPDA champs (4:4; 4:4). Natalie Lewis ('06, Speech Pathology) was elected Captain of the PSDS for next year. Cynthia Parrish ('05, Business) was elected Secretary. Jacki Evans ('06, Pol. Sci) thought of a great idea to distribute final exam good wishes with Reeses and Kisses. That's done. Next year is going to be a blast, especially with Natalie's new idea to focus more on fun improv type activities for practices.
Program review is still lingering. The President wants to take us to the "next level." Along with Dr. Schamber, Dr. Dong, and Dean Miller, I put together a proposal. I am waiting to see who they choose for the consultant's visit.

A PSDS group attended the District I Qualifier for the National Individual Events Tournament this past weekend in Chico. While the results were not what we hoped for, a couple of successes are worth noting. Andreea Borcea ('03, Business/Econ) placed 2nd in Communication Analysis, earning a bid to the national tournament. Natalie Lewis ('06, Speech Pathology) was a semifinalist in Prose Interpretation.

This past weekend the Pacific Speech and Debate Society attended the Western States forensics tournament in Salt Lake City, UT represented by two debate teams. In the open division of 28 teams from 12 schools, Pacific's Patrick Chaffey ('03, Accounting) and Ryan Fawaz ('05, Econ) finished as Quarterfinalists after besting Air Force, BYU Idaho, CSULA, and Alaska. They were defeated by Wyoming in the quarterfinals. Chaffey was rated 4th Place speaker (out of 56 in the tournament). Nice job guys!

The PSDS sent a small team to the Northern California Forensics Association championship tournament this past weekend, but still came away with a respectable showing, placing 2nd in the small entry university sweeps. Tonquise Jabari ('03, Communication) led the way with a 1st Place in Dramatic Interpretation, joined by Natalie Lewis'('06, Speech Pathology) Finalist ranking in Prose Interpretation.

This past weekend, PSDS went to its first event of the new year, an individual events tournament held at Diablo Valley College.
First-year members, Brenna Doyle (’05, Comm.) and Natalie Lewis (’06, Speech Pathology) came home with finalist awards in Dramatic Duo Interpretation. Lewis was also a Finalist in Prose. PSDS Captain Andreea Borcea (’03, Business) earned 2nd Place in Poetry Interpretation.
Despite an entry of only four people, including first-year member Tonquise Jabari, UOP placed 5th in overall sweepstakes points in the university category.

Welcome to the news and results page for the Pacific Speech and Debate Society. We have used a different system every year for awhile now. Now, we are going to try and stick with something easy. I am excited about our successes so far this year. Natalie Lewis ('06, Speech Path) and Brenna Doyle ('05, Comm) have inspired a rebirth of IEs on the team with a great DUO (placed fourth at Hayward) and Natalie's Prose (4th at SRJC). The debate side recovered in December as is clear from the following press release sent out at the time:
This past weekend the Pacific Speech and Debate Society made a powerful showing at the Great Western Debate Tournament in Reno, Nevada. The Great Western is co-hosted by Pacific and Nevada. This year there were 29 debate teams entered from 12 schools. The tournament format features four teams in each debate alternating opposing speeches on a different motion each round.
This year Pacific brought one junior level and two open level debate teams to the tournament, as well as one junior level hybrid team with Modesto Junior College.
JV Division:
Brenna Doyle (Sophomore, Communication)
Natalie Lewis (1st year, Speech Pathology)
Amy Curlee (1st year, International Relations)
Erik Nugent (1st year, Modesto JC)
Open Division:
Andreea Borcea (Senior, Business)
Ryan Fawaz (Soph, Economics)
Jacki Evans (1st year, Pol. Sci.)
Cynthia Parrish (Soph, Business)
PSDS teams were in Finals of both divisions. On the junior level, 3rd seed Curley and Nugent bested teams from Davis and Modesto in Semifinals before placing second in the Finals against teams from Humboldt and Fresno State.
In the Open division, both Pacific teams advanced to Semifinals and were placed in the same debate. 6th seed Borcea and Fawaz and 7th seed Claremont dropped in Semis with 3rd seed Evans and Parrish advancing to Finals along with 2nd seed UC Davis. Evans and Parrish placed 2nd to Davis in Finals against Santa Clara U. and Claremont.
Pacific also earned several individual speaker awards. Curley was fourth in Junior division. In the open division, Parrish placed Second and Evans was Top Speaker!
