Tuesday, October 9, 2007 Pacific Speech and Debate Squad Take First Overall Pacific Speech and Debate Takes First in Debate Pacific Debaters take Second! On October 6 & 7, Pacific Speech and Debate traveled to
Concordia University in Irvine, CA.
With 15+ other schools in attendance such as Pt. Loma Nazarene, UC San
Diego, and Arizona State, Pacific speakers accumulated the most points of every
squad there! Doing exceptionally
well were Pacific’s debaters. The
Lincoln-Douglas debaters “closed-out” the tournament at the semi-finals
(Meaning ALL debaters in that round were Pacific!). The Parliamentary debate team Pacific FS (Steve Farias/Emily
Sheldon) took second place in senior division with a record of 12-3! The only loss was in finals! Steve also was the overall winner in Open
Impromptu Speaking. Individual
speakers also did very well.
Chelsea Kelleher finished second in open prose interpretation and Anne
Eastlick was first in the novice division. All in all it was a very good showing for Pacific. This finishes four tournaments in a row
for the Pacific squad. They get
this weekend off and then they compete at four more tournaments in a row! If you want to know the complete

take First and Second (and third!) This weekend, September 22-23, 2007, Pacific Speech and Debate traveled to UC Berkeley to compete in the Cal/Long Beach Season Opener. Leaving campus at 5:30 am to compete at 7:45 am until 10:00 pm that night, Pacific students excelled in their respective competitions. Passing other schools handily, Pacific finished 2nd in Individual Events overall and First in Debate overall. Here are the individual results: Parliamentary Debate Novice Division Speakers Top Speaker Brandon Schwartz 2nd Speaker Chelsea Kelleher 3rd Speaker Jill Riffkind (First College Debate Tournament) 4th Speaker Michael Biddle 5th Speaker Nolan Long (Also first tournament) 7th Speaker Youa Yang 8th Speaker Isaac Molsee Open Division 5th Speaker Richard Aragon 6th Speaker Emily Sheldon 9th Speaker Will Chamberlain Placings Novice Division Pacific’s novice debaters “closed out” the division in finals. Pacific Squad Ties
for Third in Season Opener! In Laramie, Wyoming, the University Speech and Debate Team battled it out with thirty other schools and in the end, were victorious! In overall sweepstakes, the Pacific squad tied for third with Texas Tech University. The entire team helped in this win by competing in numerous events, three weeks of hard practice and everyone on the 25+ team pitching in to do research. Here is how it all settled out: In Individual Events: Ariana Grova (‘08) : 5th place in Informative Speaking 6th place in Programmed Oral Interpretation Raymond Candler (2012): Quarter-finalist in Lincoln-Douglas Debate (his 1st college tournament ever!) **This also qualifies Raymond to the National tournament! He is the first one to qualify this year and is a freshman! Broc Maples (’12) Seventh Place Speaker in Lincoln-Douglas Debate Isaac Molsee (’13) Ninth place Speaker in Lincoln-Douglas Debate In Parliamentary Debate: Junior Division Pacific EM (Anne Eastlick ’09 & Broc Maples) Second Place Pacific AC (Richard Aragon ’11 & Raymond Candler) Third Place This was an exciting part of the tournament. This was Broc’s first college tournament and he and Anne had only debated together in practice. In a field of 60+ teams, Anne & Broc debated a total of eleven rounds in a 36 hour period. The final round did not start until ONE A.M.!!! But, in a close 2-1 decision, they emerged in second place. Unfortunately, the tournament forced Pacific EM and Pacific AC to debate in the semi-finals, thereby preventing Pacific from closing out the final round!! However, this is an outstanding start to what looks like a great semester. It should be noted that Pacific FS (Steve Farias & Emily Sheldon) as well as Pacific KM (Chelsea Kelleher & Isaac Molsee) barely missed making it to the elimination rounds. However, the points they earned (along with EM & AC’s points), gives Pacific a great start to the season-long rankings! The Pacific Speech team travels to UC Berkeley for the Northern California season opener with over twenty people! Tuesday, May 1, 2007 Pacific Places Ninth in National Forensics Association
Sweepstakes On April 18-25,
Pacific Speech and Debate travelled to Berry College in Rome, Georgia for the
National Forensics Association Tournament. Using some frequent flyer
miles, seven students and two coaches attended the tournament. Kathleen
Bruce (COP '07, History) competed in Extemporaneous Speaking, Impromptu
Speaking, and Persuasive Speaking. Branigan Robertson (Bus '07) competed
in Extemporaneous Speaking, Impromptu Speaking, and Prose
Interpretation. Kristin Pace (COP '07, Communication) competed in
Persuasive Speaking and Prose Interpretation. Raman Deol (COP '07,
Political Science) competed in Extemporaneous Speaking, Impromptu Speaking,
and Lincoln-Douglas Debate. Ariana Grova (COP '08, Communication)
competed in After-Dinner Speaking and Prose Interpretation. After all was
said and done, Pacific placed Ninth in its division the best it has done since
1999!! Congratulations to all! Northern California Forensics Association Recognizes
Pacific Team Members Pacific
has been recognized by the Northern California Forensics Association with some
additional individual awards. This organization is the one which all
directors of forensics and coaches from Northern (and a number of Southern)
California debate schools belong. Kathleen Bruce was
nominated and voted by coaches from around California as the "Best
Parliamentary Debater at a Four Year College"! Kristin Pace was
nominated as "Best Platform Speaker at a Four Year College." Also, Dr. Bates was
nominated and voted by coaches from around California as "Coach of the
Year." End of the Year Wrap-Up
Thankfully this was
the last tournament of the season! This means that PSDS travelled
approximately 16,000 air miles and 6,000 road miles in 17 weekends during the
entire 2006-2007 academic year! These numbers represent what
eighteen Pacific students EACH have done over the course of the 2006-2007
academic year. During that time, they debated 150 times, gave 100+ speeches,
and received a number of awards. The team did exceptionally well this
year. Despite a major change in the way points are calculated, we
finished 14th in the country in debate and took seven students to the national
speech competition in Atlanta, Georgia and placed ninth nationally in our
division! We took first place in sweepstakes at three tournaments, second
at the largest tournament in the country outside of a national (Pt. Loma), and
a 3rd or 4th at every other tournament. Quantitatively and qualitatively,
Pacific Speech and Debate has exceeded its record from last year.
Individually, the team members have also excelled. Kathleen Bruce and
Branigan Robertson were ranked as high as 2nd in the nation this year in
debate. Additionally, at the national tournament, Kathleen and Branigan
made it to 29th in the rankings—the best any debate team from Pacific has done
in 10+ years. Phillip Krueger and Steven Farias were also very successful
reaching 35th in the nation. There are many, many awards I could list off
for all of the team members. Suffice it to say that each and every member
of the team won at least five awards this year. Please visit http://psds.pitas.com/
for an official tally of all of our results.
On the home front, things have been happening
for Pacific Speech and Debate. This year we hosted one of the largest
tournaments in the country for the Fall 2006 semester. We grew by at least
ten regular members and we are one of—if not the—most ethnically diverse teams
on the circuit. Most exciting has been the new awarding of full ride
scholarships from the University (up to two Full Tuition Scholarships) and
Raoul Kennedy. We have also secured the number four debater in the
country, Kasey Gardner (Wky) to be a graduate student and an assistant coach
next year. This means that we will have up to six coaches next
year! Also, we have recruited a number of high school national champions
to come to Pacific! Next year will be a rebuilding year, but we have high
hopes! If you wish more information about Pacific Speech and Debate,
please contact Dr. Marlin Bates, the Director of Forensics, at 209-946-3049 or mbates@pacific.edu Tuesday, March 27, 2007 Nationals Results and Other News From March 15th to March 27, 2007, the Pacific Speech and Debate team has been competing at two debate national tournaments. Our results have set a new school record in terms of individual team results at the national tournament! During the National Parliamentary Tournament of Excellence Pacific BR (Kathleen Bruce & Branigan Robertson) & Pacific KF (F. Phillip Krueger & Steven Farias) did very well and tied the school record for the number of ballots won at the NPTE. The NPTE is a very exclusive tournament and only invites the top 56 teams in the country to participate. This year, Pacific BR was ranked 26th and Pacific KF was ranked 35th. A total of 995 teams were ranked this year by the NPTE. This tournament was held in Laramie, WY on March 15-19, 2007. http://npte.debateaddict.com/unleashed/rank.php?npteyear=2007 During the National Parliamentary Debate Association National tournament Pacific beat its old record for result at this tournament! Out of 238 teams competing, Pacific BR were ranked 29th after preliminary rounds. This earned them a bye in the Quadra-Octofinal round. They had a heart-wrenching loss during the Triple-Octofinal round, but this still beat the team record for finishes at NPDA! Pacific KF almost made it to the elimination rounds. The had a 4-4 record and need a 5-3 to advance! Pacific DC (Raman Deol & Will Chamberlain) also competed at Nationals. Moreover, the team finished 14th nationwide. This is out of 257 teams ranked nationwide. http://cas.bethel.edu/dept/comm/npda/stats/schools?season=2006-2007&sort=byrank In other news, the number four debater in the country has agreed to come to Pacific as a graduate assistant coach! Kasey Gardner is part of the Western Kentucky GS team. He is also an outstanding person and really looks forward to coming to Pacific to not only get a great M.A. in Political Communication, but also coach this team. As Dr. Bates, Director of Forensics, stated: “This is an incredible boon for Pacific! Next year looks to be a banner year for potential. Although a lot of our senior members are graduating this year, we should have a huge team next year and a great coaching staff to go with it! We anticipate 30-40 people on the team and—hopefully—four to six coaches!” Pacific Speech and Debate hosts the Irish National Champions this coming weekend and will debate them on Monday, April 2, 2007 at the Bechtel International Center at 6 pm. The public is invited to attend. Our last tournament of the season is the National Forensic Association Nationals in Rome, Georgia on April 18-24, 2007. Monday, February 12, 2007 Pacific Debaters NorCal Champions!! This past weekend (February 9-11, 2007) Pacific Speech and Debate traveled to Diablo Valley College for the Northern California Forensics Association Championship tournament. Pacific Debaters led the charge to defend our debate crown from last year. They were quite successful! Individual speakers also brought Pacific to second place overall in the tournament. This swing is known as the most difficult tournament in the nation. Indeed, it has earned the nickname, “Bloodbath by the Beach.” Over sixty schools compete at this tournament, including UCLA, UC Berkeley, San Diego State, Temple, Lewis & Clark and MANY OTHERS! Every year, many schools are thankful just to be in the top five of this tournament. Pacific did what it has not done in THE ENTIRE TEN YEAR HISTORY of the Swing: Take Second place overall and Second place overall for the Swing! Each and every student contributed to Pacific’s massive placing! It was a banner day for Pacific and sets them in good stead for the Northern California Championships this weekend. Fielding the largest team that Pacific has had in almost two decades, Pacific students came away not only with the first place trophy, but also with more than DOUBLE the amount of points of their closest competitor! Indeed, with 191 total points, Pacific Speech and Debate students were 96 points ahead of anyone else at the tournament. In doing so, Pacific debate teams did what they have not done in more than twenty years: close out the final round of open division debate! In fact, the Champions of the tournament, Phillip Krueger and Steven Farias, did not lose even ONE ballot for the ENTIRE tournament! Each and every student contributed to Pacific’s massive win and first place overall! It was a banner day for Pacific and a great lift before their next tournament in San Diego. Pacific competed against over 700 debaters from 32 countries! Held at the University of British Colombia in Vancouver Canada, the WUDC is the world’s oldest and most prestigious British parliamentary debate tournament. Pacific did very well for its first time, finishing in the top half of the very large field. The three teams that attended were Pacific BR (Kathleen Bruce & Branigan Robertson), Pacific EV (Anne Eastlick & Moises Vargas), and Pacific KF (F. Phillip Krueger & Steven Farias). January 10, 2007 PACIFIC GETS FIRST ROUND BID TO NPTE! The National Parliamentary Tournament of Excellence is the most exclusive and competitive national tournament in American Parliamentary Debate. The tournament is by invitation only and those invitations are extended to only the top 56 teams in the nations. However, these invitations go out in three rounds. The first round bids (invitations) are only extended to the top 16 teams in the country based on tournament results up to this point. In the past three years, Pacific has gone from getting an at-large bid (third round), then last year two second round bids, and now—for the first time ever—a first round bid for Pacific BR (Kathleen Bruce & Branigan Robertson)!! The season is still a long way from ending and we hope to get at least one more team invited to this exciting tournament! January 16, 2007 PACIFIC CHOSEN TO HOST IRISH CHAMPIONS FOR 2ND YEAR Every year, only five schools in the entire country are selected to host the Irish National Champion Debate teams. Last year, Pacific had the honor of hosting them for the first time. Because only a few schools can be hosts, it is highly unusual for a school to be chosen twice—let alone in a row—that Pacific is VERY honored! The Irish National Champions will arrive at Pacific on March 30th. On Monday, April 2, 2007, at 6:00 pm, The Irish will debate a team of Pacific debaters in a public demonstration of how enjoyable debate can be. The debate will be held in the Bechtel International Center and will be on the topic that we should return to Prohibition! January 22, 2007 Pacific Takes Third, TWICE! (and in the SNOW!) For the second year in a row, Pacific Speech and Debate traveled to the wintry land of Nebraska to compete in two tournaments at Concordia University. Called the “Sleet and Snow Swing,” it certainly lived up to its name! Eight inches of snow fell during the weekend and Pacific had to slug through snow drifts to get to their debate rounds! However, it was all worth it because, once again, Pacific took third at both tournaments! With such powerhouses as Western Kentucky University, Kansas State, and Truman State University, it was tough competition, but Pacific held on. Here is how Pacific’s students did: Parliamentary Debate (Open, Sleet Side, Concordia

Nicknamed “Death Duel By The Delta,” this tournament has three parts and hosts some of the best teams in the country. On Friday, November 10th, Pacific held the second Pat Kennedy Round Robin. This tournament pitted teams from the top twenty teams in the country. In a grueling double-elimination format, Pacific’s Kathleen Bruce and Branigan Robertson tied for fourth. The final round was a close one with UC, Berkeley defeating Western Kentucky by a vote of 15-14. That same day, Delta college hosted the Mustang Invitational. The balance of Pacific’s team competed here against 20 schools in individual events only.
