Did you ever finish your statement? Sorry you're having such a tough time of it. You know I was just thinking tonight I wish you were here. Why'd you have to be the overachiever and leave early? Hurry up and git yer butt down here and visit us already!

The cursed job hunt continues. I'm looking at a job description for a teaching fellowship at a boarding school:
Typically, a Fellow teaches two (or occasionally three) classes; coaches or contributes to an extracurricular program in the fall, winter, and spring; and has dormitory responsibilities... Because the Fellow is solely responsible for his or her classes, the mentor assumes an unobtrusive advisory role designed to enable the Fellow to succeed. At the same time, the Fellows participate in weekly seminars, facilitated by the Director of Teaching Fellowships... Applicants for a Teaching Fellowship must be well-qualified in their academic subjects, enthused about teaching and living with adolescent students, and willing to engage energetically in all aspects of boarding school life.
I dunno, think I could pull something like that off? My sister did something very similar for two years as an English teacher - I'm sure I could get advice (and warnings - I know she said several times how little pay she received)... but I'm getting cold feet just thinking about what this job requires...Here's another little jem from someone at Teach for America:
I know I've contacted you before, but I'm impressed by your accomplishments as a contributor to the Wellesley News, and think you might be a good fit for our program.
Actually, I was rather grateful I got that email - it means it's not too late to apply, right? But, uh... "contributor to the Wellesley News" - doing the comic strip once every two weeks and then getting shafted by the editor for an even lamer comic isn't the kind of contribution that would bring the attention I REALLY want from potential employers. Other than that measly comic that got ditched (yes, I am still bitter about being dropped!!), I have absolutely nothing to do with the News except skim it occasionally to see what mistakes are in it. If this was an email from Universal Press Syndicate or some other syndication firm that was like, "We think your comic strip has great potential! We would like to start selling it to 200 newspapers for syndication, right now!" then you bet my bugger I'd be jumping at that... Of course, that's way over my head. *Any* invitation to do comics, even from a small obscure publishing company or whatever, would be welcomed. But Teach for America's not going to find anything useful out of my "contribution" to the Wellesley News. Uh uh.I think I just depressed myself right there. Arrrgh.

Sigh. I used to think this country was being led by idiots. I was wrong - they're not idiots, they're liars. If you look at all the press and news videos from when the government wanted to attack Iraq to more recent times you might notice the progression from seemingly (but never truthfully) strong evidence and constant euphemizing ("smoking gun" and "WMD") to assumptions, defenses and denials, and floundering. Nothing said then has been proven, and everything being said now is a total 180 shift from then. Am feeling so depressed now about this whole worldy mess, anything available to give me SOME sustainable hope and faith? At least, I'd like to be able to go back to a state of indifference and say, "screw you world" - because then other people's actions don't do so much damage to your conscience...
I feel so upset and disgusted by the world sometimes that I literally and uncontrollably will shake and have tremors. This especially happens when I think I'm about to get too deep into a Community fight. I feel cold, too. And having FC suck the life out of you by making you feel obliged to respond to arguments isn't all that healthy either.
*Sigh* Am going to do something happy now. Easy Mac is sounding pretty good right about now.

Thinking of permanently making the move to Live Journal. But, part of me doesn't want to. Maybe if everyone out there gets an LJ then I'll consider...
What's the best way to spend a night? Pack six people into a car in search of good food and have them follow all the firetrucks they can =) That's what we did Tuesday night, trying to get to Coolidge Corner but being diverted because of (what appears to be) a massive accident on Rt. 9, then following the firetrucks out of the detour area of the town, then finally finding our way to the Super 88 in Allston. Pad thai - YUMMMM. God, I wish there was a Super 88 on or near campus!! If I had known what a wonderful thing the Super 88 was way back when, I would've gone to BU instead and spend my life there.
What's an even better way to spend the last night before classes start? Taboo with your friends =) Highlight of the night had to be Jessica's clue: "Beavis and ..." (Butthead) "OK, now reverse that" (the answer is Head-butt).
Was suppose to audition for the Vagina Monologues today, but decided not to participate this year - I don't want to tie up the entire Valentine/Presidents Day weekend with the monologues. You are having a birthday and you are supposedly gonna come visit so I'd rather have that long weekend stress-free.
I want to update this blog's layout but I don't know how to do the nice fancy stuff like you guys do... ANNNND, Wilbur is STILL down, so there goes the best option for using images. Poo puff.

I HATE MY ROOM I HATE MY ROOM I HATE MY ROOM. The fucking heater won't shut off. IT WON'T STOP THE HEAT. I'm trying to get to some balance between a fucking radiator that won't shut off when on the snowflake and a window that's wide open.
Stupidity is going to the grocery store KNOWING you need toothpaste, going to the toothpaste/toothbrush aisle, thinking "Oh an extra toothbrush would be a good idea," and then completely forgetting the toothpaste. That's me.
At least, today I finally bought that coat I've been wanting and needing since before Christmas. Very successful trip to the mall today.

Back on campus! Don't wish that I was home right now, but wished that I didn't have to leave in first place.
Glad to see I don't have to do anything, um, certain with dragons <=D eh heh. I wouldn't mind a seahorse except I don't think it would be very practical to keep one, and unlike Hatori I doubt it could survive out of water.
Can I say again how much I despise flying? Landing on both flights the turbulence was bad and coming into Washington (on a very small plane) I nearly threw up.
I've been getting some very cute emails from one of my cousins in Seoul. Apparently he got grounded from using the computer for getting bad grades (I hadn't heard from him in 2 months) - he sent me a picture of another cousin's little baby. CUUUUUUTENESS!!
I'm rather annoyed that already people are being obnoxiously loud in my dorm. Earlier it sounded like someone was having a shouting fight, but it was hard to tell - plus my neighbor (you've heard this story before) is in. And, it's insanely hot here in this end of the dorm - the heater in the hallway outside my room is broken, it can't be shut off, and even with my heater off and my window open I'm hot. Which in a way could be a good thing because I'm not experiencing cold hands and feet now. But so hard to sleep in this temperature...
Heh heh, thanks to my fellow Sex and the City fanmates (who have been here for wintersession), I FINALLY! got to see what happened to Carrie and Big and Natasha and Aidan. The parts I've been wanting to see all winter! So heartbreaking, those two episodes. Plus my neighbor lent me another Sex and the City DVD =D so you can guess what I'll be doing this weekend.
Oh, and catching up on anime. SWEET HOLY ANIME! WONDERFUL ETHERNET!!

Sigh. This has been the day when the WORSE emails come barging in... I've just been hearing about some saddening or hard or difficult moments/things from some of my friends. Actually, I guess I shouldn't say "worse" but you know how bad things come in threes? I'm already up to two so far, I'm hoping the third shoe won't drop, and nothing worse than worse will happen. Anyway - will hope for the better...
And, I've royally fucked up my plans for returning to campus from the airport tomorrow. Smart, me, smart. Shit shat shank.

Day Three.
Have actually been eating better than when Mom cooks me at home. Not that her food is bad - I love homecooking and she cooked up a storm of food for me to eat this weekend. I've been wanting to snack a lot more too. Had a craving for meat, just now, which is very rare for me - but even at this hour, I really really really want meat! The only decent meat in the house right now though is smoked salmon which I've already eaten like half a dozen packs of. Was considering going to a Wendy's or some other place that would be open all night (which, for someone like me, really screams desperation because I haven't had a burger or sandwhich since my teeth got outfitted), but instead settled for a frozen pack of edamame I found in the freezer. Not meat, but a change. Have been wondering why eating habits are improving, and am thinking it's due mainly to two things: 1. I'm bored out of my mind, and when bored I tend to wanna snack on food 2. nevermind, I guess it was just one thing. Hm. Have also been craving Eggo waffles with butter and syrup today. OK, what the heck is wrong with me?
>=3x >=3x >=3x >=3x >=3x >=3x >=3x >=3x >=3x >=3xFriday, January 16, 2004 10:46 p.m.
Holding Down the Fortress. Day Two.
Went downtown to the mall today and did some window shopping - was hoping to find some new clothing to buy (you know, 'cause my mother complains I dress "like a homeless person" yada yada), and there are sales about everywhere in the mall. I mean everywhere!! That would have made me really really happy if only I could have found something. I really do need the clothing, though. Am thinking of trekking to Huntington one of these days because although their stores aren't any better, at least they have a Borders bookstore.
Finished a Cowboy Bebop marathon. Cried my eyes out, of course.
Am bored. Rations still plentiful, though. Will not have to resort to desperate measures yet in search for entertainment.
It's rather lonely being here by myself. Times like these, I wish I had a dog. I especially miss Katie. Generally I'm not spooked out when I'm by myself but having dog used to set my mind at ease so much. Was actually thinking of going to the animal shelter and bringing home a dog! I could do it, theoretically - it costs only $60 to spay/neuter a dog and bring 'em home, and I just got my most recent paycheck from school =D When I worked at the shelter over the summer I saw a few very small adult dogs, very cute, so my mom's complaint against a big dog that makes a big mess could be sideswiped =D. Ha. I'm asking for an early death bringing a dog home. But I miss 'em anyway...
Happier note: HAPPY BIRTHDAY MORGAINE! Hope you had a good one today!

Ohh, GUSTER! Why do you have to come to my hometown when I'm not going to be here?! A month late, several dollars short...
So Sleepycat puts the excuse of going to the Sharon Osbourne show on you. I'm just curious, really. Oh, the fascinating things you can do in Tinsel Town! (It IS Tinsel Town, right?)
Speaking of LA - you gonna give me trip details?
>=3x >=3x >=3x >=3x >=3x >=3x >=3x >=3x >=3x >=3xThursday, January 15, 2004 02:21 p.m.
The 'rents have left the building! Now have house allllll to myself =)
Guster is going to be on Mountain Stage in Charleston on February 22. D'OH! If only I could be here for that, sadness.
Out of curiosity what made you guys want to see Sharon Osbourne? Your bus trip sounds exactly straight out of the Neil Gaiman book I'm reading.
Quilts sound interesting, although am surprised the Salvation Army didn't accept your old clothes... The Union Mission here takes pretty much everything mom gives them...
So did you ever see that Daily Show segment I told you about??
So, now that I have the house to myself, what is there to do? Well, shower for one ^^() and I can go online a bit more often now that I don't have to worry about incoming calls for my parents. Hmm. Other than that, not much going on, of course. Have been watching Lupin III again on Cartoon Network, and also have actually been submitting myself to watching Inuyasha too. If you can get yourself to ignore the English voices it's not bad, and the current running of Inuyasha is before the series went downhill. But oh, oh, sadness: USA is repeating Law and Order SVU so I've seen almost all the episodes the network is showing. Durnit.
*sigh* Wants so new anime... or manga... I spent over an hour in the bookstore the other day reading Gunslinger Girls. More interesting than I thought it would be - maybe I'll get the anime now... but I didn't buy it and I didn't get to finish the first volume.
>=3x >=3x >=3x >=3x >=3x >=3x >=3x >=3x >=3x >=3xTuesday, January 13, 2004 12:06 a.m.
Am going to make this quick, my hands are still freezing cold.
Watched tonight's Daily Show with Jon Stewart and laughed my ass off when they did this piece on the College Republicans at your school! Was thinking, my school's CRs would never do something so incredibly embarassing like getting laughed at by the Daily Show. Ha ha.
How's this for very bad: Saturday night (actually, it was technically Sunday morning) went to sleep around 3 AM maybe, get up that morning at 10:30 (parents drag me to church), go back to sleep after church/brunch around 1 PM, wake up around 5 PM later that afternoon, only to go back to sleep at 9 PM and wake up the next day (Monday - today... well, now it's technically yesterday) at 11 AM. Someone else do the math - I just can't believe I did that.
'Rents going out of town Thursday and will have the whole house to myself!! WHEE!!! Too bad there's not really anyone here to party with while they're gone. As the White Stripes would sing, "I just don't know what to do with myself!"

KYAAH! Phone bill my 'rents got for this month was horrible - WHO KNEW that my using the second line in the house for dial up would COST SO MUCH? We didn't know it but apparently local calls - including dialing into AOL for internet access - ARE NOT on an unlimited/free basis, like it is with most phones - so our bill was jacked up by like $50 for this month for our two lines (one a regular line, the other on a "thrifty caller" plan that charges every call by the minute). There weren't any details or reasons on the phone bill as to why we were charged so much for the second line so when we called the customer service they had to explain that we don't get free local calls on our second line - but luckily the guy on the phone knocked about $30 off our bill (there WAS a discrepancy, to tell the truth, but that technically would not have made our bill any lower). Anyway, so I've been scared into making minimal usage of the internet, since I have to use the main phone line which has to be kept free most of the time for the hospital to call my dad, even though Mom said it was okay. But DUMMY! DUMMY! DUMMY me!! Geh. Next month's bill will still be higher than usual, too.
And now maybe something you premed people can figure out. Is there a medical condition or explanation why a person's hands and feet would have a lower temperature than the rest of their body? I'm getting kicks out of freaking my mom out by putting my icy cold hands and feet onto her toasty warm feet =) but it's definitely weird. Mom wants me to see my endocrinologist (not another doctor appointment!!!! And why is it always me in the family who has all these problems!!!) - she says one of my sisters, who also is having weird thyroid issues, has the same problem and she thinks it's related to my hormone levels. So - ideas??
(It should be noted that Mom also thinks that my dental problems are related to my thyroid problems. Biological conspiracies, all around. X_x)My Furuba DVD came in the mail today =D whee! It's the volume with the Seki interview on it - you guys are aware I'm sure of my interest in Seki Tomokazu =P Tee hee hee...
So yeah, might disappear more online until I come back to school - another reason why dial up is suckage... >=3x >=3x >=3x >=3x >=3x >=3x >=3x >=3x >=3x >=3xThursday, January 8, 2004 06:24 p.m.
SNOW!
Production IG is making the sequel to the first Ghost in the Shell movie - it's called Innocence and I think it's going to mostly focus on Bateau after Kusanagi has left Section 9 after her merging with the Puppet Master. Suposedly it comes out in March (ooh!).
Question for you: do you think anyone would buy my Korean-translated copies of Furuba? Kitsu is gonna sell me the Japanese volumes 4 and up so I want to get rid of the Korean volumes I have since I obviously can't read them. Would YOU be interested in them?
CHECK THIS OUT! As Bandai Entertainment begins to take control over its own product distribution all of Bandai's existing anime DVD releases will be placed on temporary discontinuation until March, at which time titles will be progressively resolicited, some of them with new, reduced prices... The Escaflowne... DVDs will retail at $14.98 each. SWEET! I just have to wait til March and I can get Esca for mucho, um, cheap. =)
Why were you asking about Florida? My mom just asked me today if I want to go with her and dad to Florida next weekend - are your parents going or something?? Have declined invitations from Mom to go to Florida and to San Antonio in two weeks - I'd so rather be back on campus than stuck in Texas with my family.
Some humor courtesy of Flick Coleman (heh heh):
The following major scientific "discovery" is forwarded to you today. Although this element has been around for thousands of years, it had not been previously named or described so well...A major research institution has recently announced the discovery of the heaviest chemical element yet known to science. The new element has been tentatively named "Governmentium."
Governmentium has 1 neutron, 12 assistant neutrons, 75 deputy neutrons, and 11 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 312. These 312 particles are held together by forces called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called peons.
Since Governmentium has no electrons, it is inert. However, it can be detected as it impedes every reaction with which it comes into contact. A minute amount of Governmentium causes one reaction to take over 4 days to complete when it would normally take less than a second.
Governmentium has a normal half-life of 4 years; it does not decay, but instead undergoes a reorganization in which a portion of the assistant neutrons and deputy neutrons exchange places. In fact, Governmentium's mass will actually increase over time, since each reorganization will cause some morons to become neutrons, forming isodopes.
This characteristic of moron-promotion leads some scientists to speculate that Governmentium is formed whenever morons reach a certain quantity in concentration. This hypothetical quantity is referred to as "Critical Morass." You will know it when you see it.

I've forgotten how much I like watching the Lupin III TV series. You know that there's going to be a live action Hollywood Lupin III movie coming out within thenext year or two? Some guy named Gerald Molen is the producer and apparently Spielberg might direct. There are little bits and pieces of news floating online - man, I'm really interested to see how this turns out. As far as I know, this would be the first major Americanized/Hollywoodized remake of a Japanese anime/manga (unless someone corrects me? And no, "Ringu" and that dancing J. Lo movie don't count). If this turns out profitable - you think Hollywood would want to take on any other anime remakes?
So, have to wait for the Ghost in the Shell Innocence movie, and now this. Anticipation, patience. Hurry up, Hollywood/Japan!
