let go

Y’know I could hardly ever find fault in taufik’s wardrobe choices and the way he wears them. Even his songkok tilts at the perfect angle..and his samping is nicely hipster but smart. Even in traditional garb, he finds space to add a dash of street and bling with a ring on the pinky finger. And thank god he compromised on the chapal and wore shoes.
Oh perfection. Everything looks good here. Even the PSI. haha.

taufik batisah – usah lepaskan

So sad hah this song? He sings the word “usah” so many times that I forget what it means but I asked my “cikgu” and he says it means “don’t” or “don’t bother”. So the song is pleading for someone to Not bother about letting go, like whats-her-name in Titanic saying “don’t let go jack, don’t let go” is equivalent to “usah lepaskan jack, usah lepaskan…"or “usah la menangis chombi” says my “cikgu”. Muahahah.

But I disagree. Sometimes you have to let go. Sometimes you have to bother enough to let go. See what not letting go did to Jack-I’m-the-king-of-the-world? Child, sometimes you just got. to. let. go. Lego!

So anyway, “Usah lepaskan” (Don’t let go) is a self-penned single off his new album. The English song he’s been singing lately - “All because of you”- is so Zzzzzzzzz*snort* coz it was written by Ken Lim. Geez, no wonderrr!… meantime, enjoy this one instead!

And may your weekend burst with fruit flavour.

cekak musang songkok hitam samping sarung

This raya seemed to come and go in a hurry. It was back to school the next day and the mood is somehow gone although technically there is still 27(?) more days of raya to go. But the first day is always the colourful-est - of kebaya kurung, cekak musang, songkok hitam, samping sarung, etc. If you've been good this Ramadhan, party on!

To all the hari raya messages that were sent, I just wanna wish yall the same...and you know the deal...the older we get, the more sins we make, the thicker our skin, the sharper our tongues, the more lethal our bitchslaps...and so if in any way, I've done anythin to hurt, hit, holler, hassle, hustle and hog you, then I'm SORRY. Truly.

Here's to appreciating the ones that we love and will lose one day and remembering the ones that we love and have lost along the way.

Selamat Hari Raya. This one's for all my ghetto children.

(here's to keeping the mood alive.)

keep it loose, keep it tight

I remembered when I was little, back when we still had TV1 and TV2 on our Singaporean FTA channels…I’ve always been surprisingly impressed and touched by Malaysia’s Petronas ads…

They can make you laugh:

(Hari Raya ad: “The widow with 7 children”)

They can make you cry:

(Hari Raya 1999 ad: “No Charge”)

They can make you laugh and cry:

(Chinese New Year 2006 ad: “Our Sons”)

One of the few commercials I’d skip my toilet breaks for.

__________

Been busy with vid2 docu shoots I forgot it’s only 2 days to raya. Haven’t had a very fulfilling ramadhan. Some years you look forward to Eid some years you don’t. I guess this is one of those….where I don’t really. But of course every year it’s special still. Haven’t seen the rest of the family for quite some time, and if not for Eid, we prolly won’t see each other for another long while. So I guess I’ll look forward to that. sigh. Happy Deepavali!

2,3 cats are running...

We got my grandma’s hari raya card in the mail and I just have to share the pantun (poem) she wrote…complete with her old school malay spelling and all…

Jagong di-jual di-pasar raya,
Di-angkat orang ka-atas lori,
Bertemu kita di-pagi raya.
Wajah semua-nya nampak berseri.

Anak itek mandi di-kolam.
Kolam kepunya’an tuan puteri
Jangan lupa bersalam-salaman.
Dan jangan lupa salam berisi. (bergurau-lah)

HAHAHAHAHAHAH. I can just imagine her rhyming.
Ain’t it awesome? I'd choose this over neruda any day. I’d love to do a translation but I’m afraid I’ll ruin it in English. Sorry!

But Anyway.

Bottomline. My nenek rocks.

scattered to the four winds

I feel kinda schizo juggling the different projects in school...currently dealing with videos/treatment/scripts on...a nepali community school news package, a ramadhan photo project, a local music documentary and the final-year drama project. But of course I'm in great company for 3 out of the 4 projects (photo project is individual). SO...Go Team!

As damon albarn would sing, "WoooooooHooooooo! When I'm pins and I'm needles. WoooooHoooo!"

__________

I've been a crybaby this weekend (lets blame pms). Cried watching the season premiere of the latest season of "Lost". Cried watching the season premiere of "Alias". Cried watching timor on his webcam singing "leaving on a jet plane" on the guitar.

leavinnnn on a jet plaaaane
Awwww!! (he says he sang that song 'coz he was supposed to sing it on our night out, but didn't)

Timor's one of our sweeeet sweet interpreters in nepal. On our last night there we all went to a pub which had a live band playing. Tim requested for the resident band to play "leaving on a jet plane" for us since it was our last night in nepal. (it was sweet, although the singer couldn't remember the lyrics, but hey its the thought that counts. hoho).

The pub also had this bunch of crazy caucasians who drunkardly danced to songs reminiscent of their hippie days. Felt like we were stuck in the flower power era of kathmandu for a bit. Groovy, baby, yeah...who could forget our last night in nepal (and sharon's shoe incident - I can laugh 'til I cry recounting that).

SO anyway.

Caught up briefly with an old friend on msn. She's finally managed to live her dreams since I last met her. Soooo happy for her.

Ain't msn cool?!? I get to catch up with an old friend in Qatar, exchange some contacts and prospective job details with a friend in England, wish the singaporean friend in Australia happy ramadhan and watch our dear ol' interpreter sing "leaving on a jet plane" from Nepal!

Magnifique. Big world, you ain't so gargantuan after all...

the ringing from this empty sound

I felt a fever coming on this afternoon in school..The heaty breath, the warm forehead, the heavy muscles, even the subtle urge to throw up..

Needed to lie down so badly that I plonked myself on the bed immediately after changing my clothes when I got home..And with contact lenses on, concussed for 2 hours.

I woke up and found that the clothes I changed out of earlier, were strewn on the bed and on the floor. haha...looked like a post-coital setting ('cept the partner's missing and I was fully dressed ok). Got up and took some pills and had some food...

It's amazing what 2 paracetamols can do. Weeeeeeeeehooo...

__________

Am I the only one who thinks that dashboard confessional songs can get really whiny? But I still like them..in moderation.

__________

So awhile ago, I was in my room...and suddenly my phone rang and it showed my home phone number. Someone at home was calling me. It was my mom.
She was next door.

I thought she was on one of those short-term memory slip-ups, maybe accidentally dialed my number when she intended to dial my dad's mobile or something. So I didn't pick it up, I got up and knocked on her door and asked why she's calling my mobile..She said she was just too lazy to get up la..she was gonna ask me about tomorrow's plans.

Wah lau...so now you seee...laziness is hereditary ok.

__________

It's been so long since I've been to the movies I can't remember the last show I watched in the cinemas. *HINT*

__________

I've come to a sudden realization the reason why I like dashboard's whiny songs ...I like them when I feel whiny...agh.

currently listening to dashboard's "the brilliant dance"

(it only just occured to me today's friday the 13th. hah.)

__________

SO anyway, have a goooooood weekend, my loves.

cramp-ing my style

Have you ever been really really sick or in such excruciating pain that you start entertaining thoughts of death?

My left calf just cramped up reallyyyy bad earlier..it was so excroo-hoo!-ciatingly painful, I thought I was gonna die or something. haha

And randomly one of the first silly thoughts that followed was:

"so if I die, then my blog how ah?"

dream la dream

Click here to see the controversy brewing about the first Singapore Idol theme song, "I dream".

That song is actually an original by Leann Rhimes, done in 2001 but was passed off as an original song written for SG Idol 2004.

Poor Taufik. What the hell is wrong with these Singapore Idol producers/American composers?

finally doop doo dee dee dee dee

Was it you who spoke the words that things would happen
but not to me
Oh things are gonna happen naturally
And taking your advice I'm looking on the bright side
And balancing the whole thing
But often times those words get tangled up in lines
And the bright light turns to night
Until the dawn it brings another day to sing
about the magic that was you and me

Cause you and I both loved
What you and I spoke of
Others just read of
Others only read of the love
the love that I love

See I'm all about them words
Over numbers, unencumbered numbered words
Hundreds of pages, pages, pages forwards
More words than I had ever heard and I feel so alive

Coz you and I both loved
What you and I spoke of
And others just read of
And if you could see me now, love
Love, you and I, you and I
Not so little you and I anymore
And with this silence brings a moral story
more importantly evolving is the glory of a boy

you and I both loved what you and I spoke of
and others just read of and if you could see me now
well then I'm almost finally out of...finally out of..
finally...well I'm almost finally, finally
well I am free..

and it's okay if you have to go away
just remember the telephone works both ways
and if I never ever hear them ring
if nothing else I'll think the bells inside
have finally found you someone else and that's okay
cause I'll remember everything you sang

you and I both loved what you and I spoke of
and others just read of and if you could see me now
well I'm almost finally

out of words.

fear is the heart of love

So it's ramadhan..eid is coming..you know the works, the home is busy we're hanging new curtains, painting walls and all that snazz.

My dad painted our house gate silvery grey. And mother said now it looks like a jail cell (it was previously white). HAHA. Dad said..no it looks like a Newly-Painted jail cell. MUAHAH..you go daddy-o

Thank god for hari rayas for being a good excuse to refurnish the homes. (not that I do anything drastically different to my room anyway)

__________

I've realized its dangerous to drive when you have a cold.

Because it's a fact that you can never sneeze with your eyes open.

So when I start sneezing six times in a row while having to manouver a U-turn....Wah piang..I feared for my life...

But all's good..it was a hella a wide turn but no cars. ahaha..stop it nose stop it.

And holy smoke, have you seen the haze lately? It's putting me in a bad mood.

__________

So anyway, I think this is the sweetest song...(even though it starts off with: "love of mine, someday you will die..") heh. but really...it's kinda morbid but very practical..like a sarcastic ode to all those love songs that promises "forever and a day". hehah. I love it.

faces of Nepal

During the first trip there my senses were more sensitive on the scenery and surroundings. On the second trip, I think the people that I've seen, met and talked to were the ones who livened up my senses, the ones who made it harder to say goodbye.

I'll definitely miss the many faces of Nepal.

Patan durbar square

kite-flying with timo

kite-flying with prasant

the ever-smiling rutra

meeting ram with his daughter again

trekking to ram's house again

meeting ram's lovely nephews, niece and grandma again

crossing the newly-built suspension bridge to ram's house

meeting kids at the stone quarry

visiting the community school again

taking a short flight out to nepalgunj

stopping at maoist checkpoints

making maoist soldier pose

meeting more maoists

attracting curious stares with our cameras

attracting smiles as well

people hard at work

taking a break

going to school by trishaw

villagers from the city scrambling to get home in time for Dasain celebrations

The coast disappeared when the sea drowned the sun
And I knew no words to share with anyone
The boundaries of language I quietly cursed
