Friday Five

courtesy of smattering.

1. Do you eat breakfast? What did you have today?

rarely, if ever. when i do have breakfast, it's usually at odd hours, like the middle of the afternoon. i'll occasionally indulge in going out for the full-on breakfast experience. other than that, it's sometimes a pastry. today? um... no breakfast.

2. What beverages do you usually have in a typical day?

always a cup of tea, three sugars, three creams, in the morning. it's a huge mug, so that's not as watered down as it sounds. generally a ginerale or two during the day. once in a while, something radical, like a smoothie. :)

3. White bread or wheat bread?

um, lessee... generally white, but the good kind, not Wonderbread. there are some good bakeries around here.

4. What's your favorite kind (potato/tortilla/corn) and flavor of chip?

ridgie chips. they taste better. sour cream and chive, if i do a flavor. golden russet, if i get plain. corn chips don't really rock my world; tortilla chips do, sometimes, when doused in copious amounts of good salsa.

5. How do you plan to spend your weekend?

working Comics Come Home, Denis Leary's annual benefit show. battling with Photoshop, trying to get a photo essay done. catching up with my best friend. (the sleeping bit should ge without saying by now.)

whoops.

ah, dean. such a way with words. which is a good thing, too, as your way with mechanical objects appears to be somewhat suspect. ;)

quick - can you name your cable company?

apparently, i can't. i got home last week to find my cable cut off. what with buyouts and all, i've lost track of who is which utility (altho it's debatable if cable is a utility or a luxury). AT&T still equates to phone for me. and i'd paid the phone bill, so i ignored the AT&T bills. noooooo. Verizon = phone. AT&T = cable. i explained my confusion to the tech guy as i was paying over the phone (and hearing the service come back on), and he said 'yeah. we get a lot of that.' so much for brand name recognition, eh?

you know - the *guy*

there's a show currently running at The Market Theatre, called Ricky Jay and his 52 Assistants. everyone's been very excited about this. apparently, Ricky Jay is a rather accomplished magician, as well as magical historian and performer.

so i'm walking thru the Yard the other day, and i catch a poster for the show. and it hits me. he's the guy! you know, the guy, the one from that scene in the movie, you know, the movie?

that was how i found myself explaining it all to my best friend. Ricky Jay has been in a number of Mamet films, and he's the guy, in Spanish Prisoner, who helps explain the plan in the opening scene.

you know. the guy.

mixed motives, so to speak.

you know, i wonder how many times bartenders card just to get a person's name? especially if it's a guy bartender, and the person in question is some sweet young blonde thing.

some food for thought.

ah. the every lovely Arts and Letters Daily had two interesting articles recently. well, lots more than that, actually, but the two that caught my eye were this one on Bush's speech before the joint session of Congress and this on the continuing revisionism in re C.S. Lewis and The Chronicles of Narnia. check 'em out.

'let's transition that.'

one of my pet peeves: people who insist on verbing nouns. 'we need to dialogue this.' no. no, you don't. you need to talk about it, or discuss it, or open a dialogue. grrrr.

where we find our muse

someone recently commented to me on writing that 'oh, i could never do that.' that's so not true. we all have the ability to write. the chances of us each winning the Pulitzer are slim, i'll grant you that. but it takes little more than desire to set pen to paper.

he did offer a perceptive comment - when you're writing in a cafè or bar, there's an energy there. and it feeds into the writing. looking around as i listened to him, i realized that was true.

of course, if you pause in a setting like that, it's not procrastination. it's observation, which is essential to writing. ;)

Plan B with a party hat

i'm already trying to work out a plan for New Year's Eve, so i won't have to be alone. i have a fear of New Year's. it's all part of coping with being single, i guess. doesn't make it any more appealing.

scribbles

in leafing back thru my paper journal recently, i noticed that i've gone from printing regular stuff and writing out collabs, to printing everything, to losing the righthand slant on all of my writing. i should have someone do a handwriting analysis on the paper journal. i'd be fascinated to hear the results.
