since a few people have asked: the harbour photo i'm using in this layout is one that i took myself, and then hacked up in Photoshop. i didn't mean to catch the light on the cabin window, but it looks pretty nice, don't you think?

FF, a day late

i'm a bit behind; here's this week's Friday Five.

1. What is your lineage? Where are your ancestors from?

English, Irish, Scottish. rumor has it that there's a bit of French and Native American thrown in there, but i haven't substantiated that yet.

2. Of those countries, where would you most like to visit?

Ireland. haven't been there yet. it's on the list.

3. Which would you least like to visit? Why?

France, i guess. not that i don't want to go there, it's just lower on the list. also, not sure if the family is really From There.

4. Do you do anything during the year to celebrate or recognize your heritage?

not especially, altho it's pretty damn near impossible to live in BeanTown and not observe St. Paddy's Day. green beer should be banned from the face of the earth.

5. Who were the first ancestors to move to your present country (parents, grandparents, etc.)?

many, many generations back. i'm actually qualified for Mayflower Society and DAR, altho i haven't done the paperwork. there's a huge family history behind my reluctance, having to do with Doris, my father's mother. notice i don't call her my grandmother? i'm also a direct descendant of one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. cool, eh?

Which John Cusack Are You?

i'm ready for my housedress, Mr. DeMille

hmph. according to this survey in People, i already have the early warning signs of Alzheimer's.

Are you a bit forgetful - or headed towards Alzheimer's? See a doctor if you answer yes to several of the following questions, even if you're under 60.

  • Do you forget appointments, names or phone numbers more often that you used to?
well, lessee. i don't use a calendar, and rely on preprogrammed phone numbers in both phones. does that count?
  • Have a harder time cooking meals, paying bills, or using the VCR?
i have never understood my VCR. i've comtemplated borrowing my niece to explain it to me.
  • Misplace things or find them in unusual places, like eyeglasses in the refrigerator?
i swear, i wasn't drunk the night i left the phone in the freezer.
  • Forget common words or lose your train of thought while talking?
my train of thought often derails. more like, i'm running the EuroRail in my head, and there are occasional collisions.
  • Have more trouble balancing a checkbook or keeping track of plots in movies or books?
i defy you to explain the plot of any Umberto Eco book to me in under a minute.
  • Feel more suspicious, cautious or anxious than usual?
a t-bone car accident will do that to you.
  • Forget what day it is or often get lost?
i don't think that's my fault. when the Powers That Be, otherwise known as the Big Dig, see fit to redesign T stations every other week and rip up roads on a whim, of course i get lost.
  • Lose interest in hobbies, clubs or other things that you previously enjoyed?
    sure. don't we all?
  • Avoid other people, including friends and family?
hey, if you had my family... just kidding. ;)
  • Feel unusually stressed making choices and decisions?
yup. when faced with the choice of Cherry Garcia or Heath Bar Crunch on a 97° day, with my melted brain running out my ears, yes. yes, i have a problem.

subversive

most excellent piece of art that Drongo turned me on to. check it out. feel subversive. or shudder in recognition. (note: the page is graphics intensive, and takes a bit to load.)

hey, i'll second that (if i remember)

rumination by Chris Lipe, via Top Five.

I don't believe in organized religion, so I joined a disorganized religion. Last Sunday, the preacher overslept and arrived thirty minutes late with no sermon, and then the Ladies' Auxiliary lost the names of people volunteering for next week's bake sale.

sounds good to me. ;)
