in retrospect

it's taken me a long time to realize this, but tonight i saw one of the gifts i got from my failed marriage: an undying love and appreciation for the music of Nusrat Fateh Ali Kahn. Pakistani kaawali music, if you're not familiar with him. he has an amazing voice. and i have no idea what he's singing. you know what? i don't need to understand the words to hear the love, devotion, and amazement in his singing. that is truly a gift.

pot? the kettle wants its color back.

so a few weeks ago, Clinton had his license to practice law in front of the Supreme Court pulled. it was a purely symbolic gesture, as he never had and wasn't planning to. someone i know, who has less than a pure personal record himself, saw fit to rant about how it was the right thing to do, that liar and adulterer shouldn't be allowed to practice law, it's about time he got his come uppance, yada yada, blah bling blah. and i stood there laughing at him. i wanted nothing more than to hold a mirror up to him.

Friday Five, a day late.

and if you know my family, who are the Ever Early People, you know that being late is being bad. :)

courtesy of smattering, the Friday Five.

1. What's the best gift you've ever received?

huh. oh, damn... that's a hard one. there are lots of gifts that i thought were the best when i got them. um... i'm going to go with the grandmother clock that i got from my gram when i got married. fortunately held on to it thru the divorce. i love this clock a lot. and the fact that it makes me think of my grandmother and smile every time i hear or see it, i think, is what makes it the best.

2. What's the worst?

i don't think there really is a worst. there have been a fair amount of inappropriate ones that just don't fit who i am at all. but there was always a good intention. so - no worst present.

3. What do you want for Christmas/Hannukah/Kwanzaa this year?

a new VCR.

4. As far as Holiday shopping goes, do you buy throughout the year or do it last-minute?

geez, why is it that retailers think we need 3 months to buy Christmas ornaments? holidays should be taken in order. i rarely start holiday shopping until after Thanksgiving.

5. How do you plan to spend your weekend?

sleeping. lots of sleeping. some chores, maybe heading over to see the Head of the Charles regatta. and some more sleeping. :)

artwork

i realized today that there's a huge blank space on one of my bedroom walls, and thought i should probably get something to hang there. but i had no idea what. sitting here at my computer, i glanced up to see a postcard of Hippolyte Flandrin's Young Man. if you'd asked me what my favorite piece of art was, i don't think that's what i would have named. but i have it hanging over my desk here and at work, as well as on the cover of a coffee table art book. maybe i should just get a fourth print for the bedroom. :)

Anais, i'm not.

i've gotten into the habit of carrying a paper notebook with me, and writing wherever i am. often, this is in a bar after work. someone asked me recently if i was trying to become Anais Nin. i said it felt more like Bukowski. they didn't get it.

so, this bear walks into a bar...

i found this story a few weeks ago about a man who was arrested for illegal burning in his backyard. turns out he was burning a teddy bear in a voodoo rite to purge it of evil spirits.

i think the poor bear was purged of a bit more than evil spirits.

sent the story to a few friends (of course, i can't find it now for you), and much punning ensued. 'so this bear walks into a bar and walks up to another bear, and asks 'what's ursine?'' heh.
