J is in Pennsylvania. Her beloved grandfather fell ill and she wanted to see him, so she flew out on Thursday.

He died on Friday, and she's been helping her mom and grandmother cope since then. Sad times, but she is at her very best as a human being when these things happen. I've never met anyone who has a more natural compassion. She always knows just what to say and do to take care of herself and others. I wish I could be there to give her a hug.

No need to archive July, since there are only two pathetic entries.

So here we go with August. Been writhing around in the summer sun, hoping the warmth of it lasts long enough to sustain me through what looks to be a tough winter. Luckily, I have my darling to help me through and hold my hand on the beach in Hawaii while I sob for the lost potential of the Web.

My friend Maria is fixing up our garden right now, and we have two village-sized piles of hot, fragrant compost in our driveway. She promises to erase the sad evidence of a year of neglect--dead plants, overgrown grass empty pots, barren soil--and replace it with lovely native plants, an efficient irrigation system, and a splishy water feature! All very low-maintenance, I hope--I have visions of me taking a break from the novel and padding out in my sock feet, holding a cup of steaming green tea (will have quit coffee for good, you see), to flip a switch or something equally easy.

Poul Anderson died. It's a sad day for science fiction readers. Today, former SFWA president Paul Levinson said:

"Alas, we may be in the unkindest decade for our pioneers."

... and I think he's right. As much as I have loved watching science fiction grow up and embrace different voices, I will always reserve a corner of my heart where Asimov and the rest of the old white guys who started the whole thing will live forever. I'm glad some of them got to live to see 2000, the year the Future was supposed to start.
