SAMI RANT~!

O_O dai shokku!
so there's a program on tv called "online" and they discuss (and encourage viewer call-ins) certain 'hot topics'. tonight they're discussing street racing and whether or not they should raise the legal age to get your full driver's license.
issue #1 - should they raise the age? (it's 16 here, btw)
i'm thinking no. they say that 16 year olds get in more accidents than 18 year olds and 25 year olds get in even LESS accidents. what i would like to point out is that by the time they're 25, they've had almost 10 years of experience. therefore OF COURSE they're less likely to get into an accident! inexperience is just as great a cause as immaturity.
issue #2 - all young drivers are street racers.
actually... by the time you learn the skill and fully invest the money in your car (modifications, etc), you're prolly out of your teenage years. 9_9 there are 16 year olds streetracing, there are 30 year olds street racing. whatever.
issue #3 - solutions
personally, i'm going with the 'skate park' idea. you notice how few skateboarders you see tearing up the sidewalks these days? its because of skate parks. have legitimate tracks (that don't cost an arm and a leg to use) and you'll get people off the street. won't stop the impromptu races, but you'll get the organized ones off the roads and there's half your battle.
ultimately i think it's unfair to stereotype people. the youth of tomorrow should not be punished for the idiocy of a few today. Streetracing has always existed and it will continue to exist. if you raise the age limit to 18, to 21, you're just going to have 25 year olds racing (like you do today), so unless you want to raise the bar to 40 (and don't think i haven't seen 40 year olds dragging) you're not stopping much.
btw - in case anyone's wondering (min? aliya? luthien?), vancouver roads are so narrow (particularly residential) because that's the government's way of discouraging speeding in residential zones. ^_~ narrow roads make you go slower, ne? 9_9 what i can tell you is that they're frickin' nerve wracking!!! some roads have parked cars on both sides and there's *barely* enough room for your own car to drive down the middle... like i've been on roads where there are literally *inches* between my mirrors and the *CARS* on either side of me.
