UC Irvine vs. Carnegie Mellon

Calvin has inspired me...XD Even though Lawrence has been throwing (metaphorically) hints and ollau already made one during Spanish class. =)

I'm just comparing two schools for now...somehow these aren't my final choices just yet....T.T There's still UC Davis, and maybe Cal Poly SLO, and throw in University of San Diego just for kicks...

UC IRVINE:

  • Mascot: Anteaters
  • More suburbs/not rural like Davis
  • Quarter system
  • Tuition: $20 thousands
  • Transporation home: Car or Plane
  • Walk or bike
  • 2 years of guaranteed housing (doesn't matter when deposit is sent)
  • Meal plan: divided into meals
  • Many Asians
  • Academically pretty good
  • Not a lot of available activities on campus (it seems)
  • Housing: suites (10-15 people share one bathroom)
  • Disneyland, beach, L.A., San Diego
  • Ana, Eric, Malav, Jimmy are probably going there
  • Dan and Angie are already going there
  • Park in the middle, campus shaped in a circle (kind of like Disneyland)
  • Under construction indefinitely (no student center at the moment)
  • Car is needed to travel around to other cities (buses?)
  • Largest class is approx. 400 students and gets smaller to about 30-40 during discussions
  • I didn't eat the food, but there's restaurants across the street
  • Themed housing; can choose co-ed or not

    CARNEGIE MELLON:

  • Mascot: Tartans
  • Big city
  • Semester
  • Tuition: $40 thousands
  • Transportation home: Plane
  • Walk
  • 4 years of guaranteed housing (kind depends on when deposit is sent)
  • Meal plan: divided by meals or dollars (can easily switch)
  • Many Asians, but also quite diverse
  • Academically very good/very hard
  • Everyone's very busy, lots to do on campus and right outside of campus
  • Housing: standard (one single sex hall with communal bathroom) or prime (4 people share one bathroom) or apartment style (way off campus)
  • Pittsburgh, Waterfront, Oakland
  • No one...
  • One guy last year from band
  • Park in the middle (2nd largest only to central park); Compressed, a lot of walking, because it's in the middle of the city, they build up so there are a lot of stairs
  • HUGE University Center
  • Free bus pass with student id (can go anywhere)
  • Largest class is approx. 200 students and gets smaller by senior year (10 people)
  • Really good food.
  • All freshmen dorms; same sex floors, but co-ed building

    BOTH:

  • I saw quite a few people smoking
  • Campus isn't that crowded, remotely quiet
  • Great science progams with research opportunities
  • Both have awesome art/drama schools

So I seriously have no idea. Technically in my mind it's east coast or west coast. But CMU is so expensive. >.< It makes me sad. But part of me wants to stay in California to keep that connection with my friends and family. Phooey.

    Pardon My French XP

Ack! One frickin' week. I've got one frickin' week to decide where I'm going to college next year. >.<;; Did I mention that I've got one frickin' week?

I don't have the heart to swear. =P Anyways, I had my Honors Concert Auditions today. They went alright. Except this one girl before my turn totally freaked out and started crying. She didn't even finish the rest of her pieces. That made me a little more nervous. Eek. My hands were shaking so much, too. I couldn't even take deep breaths without having it sound shaky. Stupid adrenaline. ::kicks self::

    Stupid pentatonic scales...Die!

KP decided that everyone will meet at BLam's house tomorrow for boat building. Not BLam...KP decided. ^^ That's so funny.

    One frickin' week...

Oh...and I need a prom dress, too. Crap.

    Carnegie Mellon

So my dad and I left Tuesday morning for Pittsburgh and came back Thursday night/Friday morning. Strictly business, but I still had some sort of fun. I at least enjoyed myself. It was a vacation of many firsts. The first with just me and my dad. The first time to visit Pittsburgh. The first time that I brought the free mp3 player that my dad gave me on Xmas. The first time we flew somewhere with the option of bringing my laptop but still leaving it at home. T.T The first time making a connection flight in Atlanta. The first time I've ever stayed in a two bedroom suite (with a kitchen and living room too). =) Also the first that my flight's ever been delayed making us sit in the plane still on the ground in the middle of a thunderstorm for approximately an hour. Very cool.

Tuesday was basically spent on a plane, in an airport, outside an airport waiting for a bus, or on a bus. XD But it was so cool when we arrived at the Shadyside Inn and my dad opened to door to reveal a living room. So cool. He even let me sleep in the bigger room (with a tv and standard bed). I didn't even ask. ^^ There was Comcast too. ::sigh::

Wednesday was spent entirely at Carnegie Mellon. They even fed us. I got a free lunch, and my dad took advantage of the free soda. I even sat in and observed a Differential Equations class. I feel kind of nerdy now. But I really wanted to sit in to listen to the Shakespeare class, but I decided to attend the Mellon College of Science presentation. Oh well. We got a tour of their lap facilities, though. I met about five or six other admitted students from California (most from So-Cal, but one from Northern). There were a lot of people visiting from New York and the New England area. I kept running into the same people, too. Kinda cool.

The weather was so nice though. The sun was out and it was HOT! ^^;; People were practically walking around in tank tops and shorts and flip flops.

We ate some really good Mexican food two blocks away and checked out their preparations for their annual Carnival. They even have a ferriswheel, and Phantom Planet is their guest of honor. The students build booths and attractions, so I saw some people buildling a fourth of a Death Star. XDDD

I was sad that I couldn't stay longer to check out the carnival though. Our flight back was on Thursday at 3. T.T

The campus is quite diverse. It's got its fair share of Asians and whites and the various. As long as there are other Asians, I don't feel too much of a minority. (But it doesn't matter too much, they sell sushi around the corner, which is much more important) It's kind of like Berkeley, but in Pittsburgh because it's in the middle of the city, you know. The campus is big, but small enough so you don't need a bike. There's plenty of places to get food. The buses are free. There's guaranteed housing for all four years/five years if you're majoring in Architecture.

And on the flight back, I caught a glimpse of this one city before we landed where the street lamps or houses were set up to create the image of an umbrella with a hooked handle during the night from the sky. I saw a rosary, too. I only wish that I took a picture. ::sniff:: The movie coming back was Fun with Dick and Jane, which I actually watched. It wasn't too bad. It was a good inflight movie though. Quite cute with them robbing stores with waterguns and accidentally getting deported because their housemaid taught their son Spanish. XD What's this world coming to when they charge you two dollars for headphones on the plane? I thought they used to be free....

I felt like Nana from the manga NANA by Ai Yazawa in the beginning when their train gets delayed on the way to Tokyo and they end up talking all the way there. My dad and I had fun talking to the guy right next to us while the flight from Atlanta was delayed, Steve. He's like part Indian/Persian and Chinese. So cool. O.O He owns Alienware, a Playstation Portable, that Motorola phone that looks like a camera and rotates. I'm so jealous. ::heavy sigh::

However, I still have no idea where I'm going to college next year. T.T I've got one week to make a decision. The sooner the better, too, because Carnegie Mellon decides housing by when you send in the $500 deposit. Must decide soon... =.=

Irvine's nice and close. Carnegie's in the city, in Pittsburgh. Irvine's $20 thou. Carnegie's $40 thou. Drive/short plane ride versus six hour flight. I might as well make a pro/con list. Haha.

Movie Review: Thank You for Smoking

Just got back from Pittsburgh about an hour ago. It's midnight right now. XD But my dad let me use the internet so I'll just post this thing that I typed up Monday night before my trip.

I really liked it. I didn't know what to expect, but I heard it was good. So I went entered the theater with KP and ollau with no particular expectations other than a good laugh. There were eleven people, including us, in the theater. XD That's so sad, but, then again, it was a Monday night. So true.

So the movie...Aaron Eckhart is absolutely lovable as the number one tobacco lobbyist in Washington D.C.. His son is adorable as he admires his father. Rob Lowe and his fetish for Asian stuff cracks me up almost to the point of no return. And I think the sole lesson that I learned from this movie is: Argument over negotiation. As long as the other guy is proved wrong to the people, you're right.

It's true that the jokes aren't fired as quickly as Culture Clash style, but remember, this is a movie...with plot. Katie Holmes had the weirdest character ever. She was just...weird. ^^;; But just thinking about this movie cracks me up.

If I could, I'd stuff everyone I know in a bus to go see Thank You for Smoking if they hadn't already. Just thinking about the movie makes me smile. It's just so cute. Everyone should definitely go see it. Furthermore, I just got exposed to a new way of torture/kidnapping technique. Major eyeopener.

Then again, I've been in a really funky mood all Monday. Maybe it was all that incense I inhaled at that Buddhist temple Shana and I visited for our Visitation Project for World Religions. ::shrugs:: Perhaps just a little loopy. Maybe.

Plus, I just had the worst piano lesson in history. I have Honors Concert auditions this Sunday, and I messed up my pieces badly. So bad...that I couldn't start my first piece. >.< But my teacher had high hopes because whenever I suck during the lesson before auditions, I don't suck as much later...so I'm praying and hoping. Wish me luck on Sunday. Muah!

Movie Review (x2): Kung Fu Hustle & King Kong

Kung Fu Hustle: I got this movie for Christmas from my parents and still hadn't seen it yet. I'm still shocked that my dad even bought if for me because I had no notion of wanting it and it's rated R. O.O My dad almost never buys me R-rated movies. But when KP and Stephy said that they wanted to borrow it from me, it gave me incentive to want to watch it. So here goes...

I found it pretty humorous, overall. Coming from the creator of Shaolin Soccer, the action's going to be a little cheesy, with the obvious usage of wires and exaggerations. It's funny though. A little bit too violent at times, but I can take it if I just remember that it's stylized and all fake. XD

My two favorite parts are when Sing is trying to pick someone to fight with one-on-one and everyone looks too macho for him. The other scene was when Sing and his friend are trying to throw knives. So funny. ♥ Personally, I think Stephen Chow (actor as Sing/director) is really cute. ^^ It's fun to watch him kick butt in this movie, as well.

The plot's very simple and the humor is somewhat deadpan (I guess). The violence is straight-forward (such as seeing people get scalped in Lucy Liu in Kill Bill fashion). Me being not very picky and always wanting to give movies a chance wouldn't mind letting you borrow my copy. It's cute. The ending was really cute. ::swoons:: But if we're rating on stars, maybe 2 1/2 out of 4. Maybe.

King Kong: I didn't even know that my dad had this movie in possession until he pulled it out after he saw me watching Kung Fu Hustle. To be honest, I've never even seen the original. Kertus shocked me when he said that King Kong died in the end. For those who haven't seen it yet, it's like a combination between Jurassic Park and Godizilla. =) Both movies I like, but this movie...not so much. Sorry.

King Kong left me with a depressed feeling. I didn't cry or anything, but they spent at least half an hour with him standing on the Empire State Building screaming and getting shot by airplanes over and over again. It got boring. Really boring. There's a point when enough is enough. Such as when a few of the characters, including Jack Black and Adrian/Adrien Brody, fall into a insect nest and the bugs just don't stop coming. I got a little frustrated wondering if they were ever going to get out because then I just wanted them to die already!! XD

The movie was tense though. One action scene after the other, almost neverending. They spent forever on the boat and on the island! My gosh! I did like Adrien/Adrian Brody's character though. He was likeable, unlike the rest. And I thought it was cute how King Kong's first priority was always Anne's safety and she was getting carelessly tossed and swung around. So funny.

But as a someone watching King Kong for the first time ever without knowing the story at all, I have so many unanswered questions. Why did the natives steal blondie back for the ritual/sacrifice thingy? What was the purpose of the ritual/sacrifice thingy? King Kong doesn't eat them, so what are they for? Are women just toys until they break? Why is everything on that island seem like they were just exposed to lots of radiation? Giant bugs, lizards, apes...XD What's this I hear about beauty killing beast? The natives really bothered me, so don't get me started on that.

Drove down with the parentals to visit UC Irvine yesterday. After seeing so many campuses, they all start to look the same. But from what's available to me, I liked it. Dan seems happy there. It seems more active than UCSD (according to ollau). =P There were even people there practicing Filipino folk dances. I think anayufan would've like to go there. ^^ I also saw several people practicing this one dance that involved multiple people holding two short sticks and banging them on the ground and together and with each other (kind of like fighting) to the beat of a drum. It was pretty cool. I especially like how they're nerdy and named an entire housing campus based upon J. R. R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings ::cough:: MIDDLE EARTH ::cough:: Rivendale is the only all girl's dorm in that housing complex. Haha.

However, I'm still unsure whether I want to attend UCI. I still have to visit a few more, but whatever. I'm going to Pittsburgh in a couple of days, so we'll see how that goes. Sorry that I've been MIA on updating for the past few days. My Easter vacation's packed. Kind of makes me sad because I think I'm going to be more tired than when school was going on. T.T

    HAPPY EASTER, EVERYONE!!!

    Spring Break is Love

It's finally here. Temporary freedom! I'm so happy that I could die happy now. XD Just kidding.

Break officially started on Wednesday. Being in AP Physics never felt so good, especially when we get free dress and out of school by 9:15 to go on an awesome fieldtrip. Much fun. The tech museum is a wonderful place. It's better than a Spanish ensayo, that's for sure. Haha. So yeah, the fieldtrip was fun. KP and few others, including me, got lost. >.< We got separated from our "chaperone"/group. T.T It was funny, and no one noticed that half of the girls were gone. That's so sad.

    After the fieldtrip, KP drove me to In 'n Out where we tried out some of their secret menu. Animal style fries are yummy, yet fattening. ^^;

Then the gymnastics meet was the longest one in the world!! It started at 6:00pm and didn't end until 9:30pm!! OMG. But it was great. Some people from school came to watch, and it's always fun explaining when to cheer. And our varsity is so good, so I love to brag. JV finish way early, but Varsity took so long. We had to wait for them to finish two events (beam and floor). But I love watching their floor routines. They're so cool. =) And guess what? I got my handstand forward roll!!! ♥ I'm so happy. I'm deathly afraid of doing my handstand forward roll, so I'm ecstatic that I actually did it while competing. ^^

On Thursday, I woke up early to go to the mall with KP and ollau to shop for prom dresses. Very complicated story. Anyways, we met up with Natasha later and ate lunch together. Then we headed back to Macy's so she can judge the dresses that we liked. Then we spent another hour and a half helping me freaking decide what dress to buy. Why must I be so indecisive?! I feel so bad for taking such a long time.

Afterward, there was a gymnastic team sleepover at Angie's house!! Woot! So much fun. We tie-dyed shirts (so now we have team solidarity with our multiple colored-zombified hands). A few of us watched Monster-in-law which is by far the worst movie I've ever seen, that it's practically hilarious. I didn't fall asleep until around 5:30am while we were watching School of Rock. It was fun.

And here's the tentative schedule for break:
    Saturday: UCI
    Sunday: ????
Monday: Visitation project w/ Shana & Thank You for Smoking with KP and ollau
    Tuesday-Thursday: Carnegie Mellon
Friday: Milk Carton Boat @ BLam's
    Saturday: ???? (honor's concert auditions?)
    Sunday: ???? (honor's concert auditions?)
    Monday: ????

So wasn't that exciting? XD No...I'm going back to sleep now. Me tired...

The one with Lukas' magic burrito.

I helped Kris sneak posters past her sweetie-beets this morning. I'm an accomplice now. So now, he's bitter that I helped her celebrate their anniversary first. Oops. =P

During collaboration, I had to make up a test for Spanish when I was sick. That was the hardest vocab section that I've ever seen in my life! T.T

Lunch was interesting though. Ashleigh came to visit. Woohoo to spring break! Haha. Then we went to visit Kris/Lawrence/Lukas/Jaymee...that lunch area. Anyways, props to Lukas' magic burrito. ^_^ KP and I walk away for five minutes when he's almost finished and then it becomes full-sized again?! He'll never go hungry...O.O

Ollau started composing a pros/cons list between UC Berkeley and UC San Diego during Spanish presentations. I decided to help by inputting my two cents. =) But what am I doing helping her? I still have 7 colleges needing to be narrowed down to at least a list less than five. ::heavy sigh:: Maybe I should just make a dartboard with all of the college names on it. Nah.

"Don't make fun of my pros and cons list!"
"I'm not! In fact, I think things will come out in my favor!"
    -- Rory and Logan,
    Gilmore Girls

Anyways, after school, Lawrence, Jaymee, and I went on an adventure, delivering red Calculus binders, becoming KP's entourage, getting ditched by KP...blah blah. All in all, I have decided that Lawrence is a talented Frisbee Ninja from an alternate universe. ^_^ Yup. He rules when it comes to Frisbee combat. XD

That was my day. Now only one day and one class period until Spring Break!! But in the meantime, there's a calculus test and a rather lovely tiring English portfolio cultivating into a homework jungle in my way towards the path to a week of ultimate bliss (or freedom). ::pulls out large firearm and super heroin outfit as she dives into the jungle:: See you on the other side...

And did I mention that I have a gymnastics meet on Wednesday too! No freedom until 9pm. I feel the pain...

    Happy Anniversary J/K!! ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Quote of the day, by yours truly:
"I think Lukas went to the bathroom. He does that sometimes."

    Tumbling and Fries!

I've decided that there will be no new layout for the month of April based on the simple fact that I really like the current layout. Also, I don't really have any inspiration at the moment to make a new one. Sorry guys. Are you happy now that you have a concrete explanation, Stephy? =.=

My first gymnastics meet of the season was on Friday, since I was sick for the last two. ::sniff:: I was really nervous all day because I was tired and just wanted to go home after school was over. But during the meet, I got really excited and even after I got more energy. It's ironic because the whole entire bus ride to the gym was quiet, but on the way back, girls were shrieking, there was laughter, and Angie was dancing (on the bus). XD

We won! Yay! Even though the JV scores were really close with the other team because the judge we had was really mean. =.= For the floor routine, the music got messed up so I was working with random Matrix music instead of the normal Matrix music. ^^; But apparently the music I got was really cool and I did my routine to the music, accidentally. ^_^ That felt cool. Of course, I wasn't even conscious of the music because I was too busy thinking "Oh crap, here comes the handstand-forward roll!", which was followed by "Oh crap, that was not a handstand-forward roll, and where are my glasses?" >.< Oops. But other than that, I had fun cheering on my teammates and dissing the evil judge. Our varsity team is so good. People should just go to all of the meets to see them. They're amazing. =)

I didn't even get home until around 11:30pm. =P We went out to eat at the Boardwalk (not in Santa Cruz, haha). Good food, but Natasha needed money so we took a 15 minute detour to find an ATM. Girls after gymnastics meets are crazy you guys. We're practically bouncing off of the walls and scarfing down large amounts of pizza and fries. ::shakes head in embarassment:: But it was fun.

And apparently, my locker buddy really did just hand me my stuff the other day. XD She just gave up because I hang out around my locker most of the time so it's really hard to sneak stuff into my locker during school hours. T.T Sorry. Thanks for the pretzels though. I fed like half the school with those pretzels. XDD

And here's my college list (in no particular order whatsoever):

  • Carnegie Mellon
  • UC Irvine
  • UC Davis
  • Cal Poly SLO
  • Saint Mary's College of CA ($)
  • Santa Clara University ($)
  • University of San Diego ($)
  • University of San Francisco
  • UC Santa Barbara
  • Purdue

I've already crossed out about three. And three others offered me on average about $9 thousand in scholarship money. But I really HAVE NO IDEA WHERE I'M GOING TO COLLEGE NEXT YEAR!! Somebody help me!! ::cries in despair::

Only two more days and one class period until Spring Break my friends. ^_^ Yayness...
