Chapter 2. The Boy
He sat at the front of the classroom, near the door. His copper toned, smooth, angelic face rested upon the palm of a strong, delicate looking right hand. Bright blue eyes were half hidden by two heavy eyelids. Rich swarthy hair covered any evidence of his drowsy state, while the teacher lectured about the final. He knew he needed the information that was being revealed, but he never understood the concepts at all. To him, it was just a bunch of symbols. He could not wait until graduation, when he would finally become a high school student, surrounded by hundreds of high school girls. The only things stopping him were his grades, which prevented him from playing sports for the rest of the year. He needed to find a tutor soon, but who? Who was going to help him, without spoiling his reputation?
Before he could ponder about the question, someone poked him hard on the shoulder. There were sniggers all around him, and his friend who had poked him pointed towards the far corner of the room. A petite, red headed girl was trembling while flipping through the pages of her book. The teacher was towering over her, making her seem even more diminutive. After a few minutes the teacher scolded her and chose someone else who was more prepared.
“That’s the third time today, Yuhara. Doesn’t seem like the teacher’s in a very good mood, does it? Better stay awake, or he’ll hunt you down. I swear, the guy’s totally PMS-ing.” Whispered his friend into his ear.
“Thanks for the warning, Egami.” He chuckled.
“What’s up, anyway? You seem really out of it today. Something got you down?”
“It’s nothing. Just got the graduation blues.”
“Yeah, right. I bet you’re probably hung up on Tamaki-san. You planning on asking her to the formal on Saturday? You shouldn’t worry about it. You could get a date with every girl at school if you wanted to. I don’t know a single girl who doesn’t like you, man! Heck! I might even want to go out with you one of these days!” Egami winked.
He smirked and elbowed his friend hard. “Does that mean you’re a girl, Egami?”
Before his friend could banter back, the teacher was yelling at the same girl in the back of the classroom. He was holding a notebook and she was packing her book bag. It seemed like the teacher had sent her out of the classroom. As soon as she began walking to the door, a boy who had been sitting next to her grabbed the notebook out of the teacher’s hand. He passed it to a girl sitting next to him, who snickered when she looked at the notebook, and then passed it to someone else. The teacher scolded the boy quickly and tried to retrieve the notebook. The class suddenly began to play a game of “monkey in the middle” with the notebook. He wished that he could see what was on the notebook, but it would be a long time before it would reach the front of the classroom.
As the girl passed his desk to leave the classroom, Egami whispered into his ear. “That one though, she’s a strange one. No one knows what goes on inside that head of hers. She doesn’t talk either. I heard her brother broke out of juv a couple days ago. Her name’s Suzuhara or something, I think.”
He noticed her lengthy, burgundy hair as she vanished behind the wooden door. “Shirahata.”
“What’d you say, Yuhara?”
“Her name’s Shirahata, Egami.”
Then the bell rang signaling the end of school for the day. The students and the notebook left the classroom. Only the teacher remained, exhausted and angered.

Author's Note:: (07-16-04)
If you didn't notice, the name "Suzuhara" that Egami mentions is an allusion to the protagonist of my other fiction Worlds of Destiny. ^.~
I think I'm going to update at least one of my stories twice a month. Once at the beginning of the month and the second time in the middle, like now. XD. Hope you enjoyed this chapter. If you have any comments, please email me. ^_^
