Sun 7/30 - AM 140 minutes, Campbell Mesa trailhead to Kinlani dorm via Arizona trail and Fisher Point. Took just a bit longer than expected but overall a solid effort. Some slippery footing from last night's gullywasher. Calves sore as a result. Carried fluids which made the run possible of course. Longest run in a long time, but I knew for a while I was capable of such things. PM 20 minutes plus very very slow, up and down the hill behind the dorm to the Observatory Mesa trailhead. Tagging along to make sure no one got lost, as soon as I wasn't needed I turned around. Legs beat, as one would expect.
Sat 7/29 - AM just under 50 minutes easy, to Buffalo Park and back. Feeling much better after yesterday's afternoon's ordeal, must be the drugs. PM 5m tempo at Lake 6Mary in 29:00. Splits of 6:11, 5:44, 5:42, 5:33, and 5:52. A big improvement over the last time I ran here two weeks ago. First mile was a joke, picked it up from there and felt fine until 3.5 miles when the road entered a long gradual gentle incline. Reached 4m just on the edge of straining to maintain the pace, chose to jog it in but then recovered quicker than expected. As a result, I ended up doing the last mile fartlek style with untimed pickups and recoveries to get it over with. This went quicker than expected. About 4 miles total of warmup and cooldown. Taking yesterday afternoon was a blessing in disguise to a certain extent.
Fri 7/28 - AM 60 minutes or so in Sedona, around Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte. Various breaks to corral wayward kiddies. Fantastic scenery, noticeably warmer than runs in FLG. As ever, the kids started out too hard and wilted somewhat later on. Planned afternoon run went by the boards due to a self-inflicted case of barotitis in the left ear that put me in the hospital. Miserable earache, headache, and nausea.
Thu 7/27 - AM 25 minutes very easy on flat trail near camp dorm. Feeling predictably sluggish. Not sleeping enough. PM 85 minutes lost on Observatory Mesa. This after a mixed bag of nonsense at the track, incl. most of Sev's beloved soccer ball drills with the out-and-back stuff that fried my right glute. Shooting for an hour easy, missed the crucial turn and found myself on old route 66 5 miles west of town. Vague feeling of panic gave way to resignation and it wasn't so bad once I relaxed. Moving well from about 35 to 70 minutes, after that it was just about getting back to civilization before midnight. One break at 30', another one after 60 or so, and a really long break at 75.
Wed 7/26 - AM hike up to Humphreys Peak, this time with the campers. After an absolutely horrible night trying to sleep with multiple anxieties going and lightning outside, I felt better than expected. Worked the kiddies mercilessly on the way up in terms of setting a fast pace, but took multiple long breaks as well. Leisurely stroll on the way down. A great hike. PM 60 minutes, Campbell Mesa. Felt much better than expected despite some tightness in right hip at the very start. moving well and completely under control. Overcast, cool with spitting rain, good conditions for running.
Tue 7/25 - AM 30 minutes out-and-back in Ft. Tuthill. Not as easy as I would have liked, dragged along by eager kids. They wilted, of course. A nice morning to be outside. PM 80-plus minutes in chunks at Ft Tuthill. Ran easy for 45 minutes or so out and back with campers with breaks interspersed. After that, took the urban trail back to Milton road (absolutely hellish at rush hour), at a much higher intensity. That lasted for 30 minutes and I was done, jogged it in the last mile or so completely tuckered out. I need to back off the intesity for a couple of days as camp mania is in full swing.

Mon 7/24 - AM 55+ minutes in Ft. Tuthill park. Went quite slowly most of the way, as a sop to yesterday's effort. Right adductor/quad feeling sore but it loosened up as the run went along. PM 60 minutes out-and-back on Observatory Mesa. Started with a mile-plus uphill, out for 33 back in 27 as a result. Comfortable and under control the entire way. Legs feeling good for the amount of running I've been doing lately.
