Sun 4/30 - PM Groton Road Race in 33:38. Dead man running, tired at the start of the race and very tired afterwards. In between, moving relatively smoothly for the first 3 miles, then steadily crumbled until mile 5 when the course hit an uphill stretch, nothing major, but enough to make me check out completely. Mile splits of 5:02, 5:19, 5:28, 5:31, 5:27, and 5:40. I wonder about the accuracy of the first couple miles, it didn't feel that fast but I suppose it was. Trying to maintain a consistent effort but it was impossible to keep focus. The course changed significantly from last year when I ran a minute faster, I remember it being harder, but I suppose it could be argued the new course is just as challenging. No big long hills but lots of rolling terrain. I actually like the course a lot, just wish I had been capable of a better effort. Breezy conditions again, created a big headwind situation the second mile but most of the rest of the course was sheltered. Haven't had a decent night's sleep all week and there it is. Going to sleep tired, not falling asleep right away, waking up in the middle of the night, waking up tired in the morning and so it goes. Looking back at my log from a year ago this time, the same theme comes out about being tired and not sleeping well or enough, and yet I was running better and capable of better. I think all the doubling in March may have put me under. Be that as it may, I'm still holding out hope that there's time to turn things around. Otherwise, trying to run a track 10k in three weeks would be an exercise in futility.
Sat 4/29 - off. Not the way I would have planned it, but there needed to be an off day somewhere in this week. Stupid of me to not take it during the week, esp. Monday. Feeling tired and lackluster all day, unable to resist taking a nap--at 10 AM. Not especially optimistic for tomorrow's race.
Fri 4/28 - PM 65 minutes, Area 51. Took the swampy outer trail for a change and made a few stops while poking around. Legs stiff and creaky again at the outset, but marginally better than yesterday. Six more strides on the way in but the first five felt awkward. Breezy again, and cool enough for pants.
Thu 4/27 - PM just under 60 minutes, rail bed to Mt. Hope and back through Levittown. Stumbling along on stiff legs for the first half hour, loosened up some after that and able to do six low-key strides on the way in. Perhaps a light at the end of the tunnel, after feeling like dung since the vacation ended. In addition to stiff legs, hip flexors were very tight and stayed that way. Not coincidentally, I felt an oddly strong compulsion to stretch after the run, something I've been skipping for months now. Another cool, breezy afternoon, as ever in April the wind direction changes but it never seems to stop blowing.
Wed 4/26 - PM 60 minutes in Lincoln woods. Planned to go longer, but wilted after 30 minutes and it went rapidly downhill from there. Still flat, just didn't realize it at first. Right adductor still in lock-up mode, I'm at a loss to understand what I did to it in the first place but I suppose the effects of Saturday's workout may have just taken time to sink in. These factors combined to make the second half of the run a real treat. Looking forward to a run in the woods all day at work, feeling oddly cheated by how it actually went down. I definitely should have taken Monday, or Tuesday, completely off.
Tue 4/25 - PM 1600 5R, 3x300 1.5R. Splits of 5:02 (2:34, 2:28) and the 300s all around 52. Felt awful awful awful, but in a sneaky way. Thought I'd be fine for the shorter workout right through the end of the warmup, but then my right leg twinged while doing drills and suddenly my IT/adductor was locking up. Just as suddenly noticed I was feeling very flat and unable to focus on a high level effort. The rapidly deteriorating weather conditions, with winds near gale force and gathering rain, didn't help, but they weren't enough to put me off the session completely. Still really, really tired, the latest insomniac episode didn't treat me well and the transition from vacation time to back-to-work time has been a rough one. So flat and disinterested I skipped the cooldown completely to get the hell out of there.

Mon 4/24 - PM 45+ minutes, Area 51. After sleeping away the days of the vacation, had a predictably impossible time falling asleep last night, feeling it in the late afternoon of course. Hard enough to cut through the fog, chose to keep the run short and low-key which is all I had in me anyway. Right shin sore, from Saturday obviously as it's been a long time since I've had any trouble there. Continued chilly dank weather but at least the rain stopped. Looking to taper down a bit this week after last week's multiple doubles.
