Sun 5/28 - AM 65 minutes or so in Area 51 very easy. Felt like garbage, continued sticky weather not helping a bit. First brush with the muggies this year and it's already gotten old after two days. Right hip, somewhat tight and off during the race yesterday, picked up right where it left off. The decision to stick it out to the bitter end instead of cutting my losses definitely biting me in the ass today.
Sat 5/27 - PM 5k in 15:39, splits of 4:50, 4:59, and 5:11 en route. A disappointing race, made more so by the fact that I thought had a better effort in me after the workout earlier in the week. In hindsight, I sabotaged myself by staying up too late for no good reason, story of my life. Unlike what I wrote a few days ago, the routine of late is in fact different from winter coaching days in that I got to bed earlier then. Tried sleeping in this morning, but of course that wasn't happening. When it came time to dig down, unable to do anything and so proceeded on an inexorable deceleration with no fight whatsoever. It didn't help that the humidity that arrived yesterday stuck around, plus the fact that the pack went out too slow (for them) in 74 then of course overcompensated by running the next two laps in 2:20, most of which I covered foolishly. After that, I got to the mile knowing it was all downhill from there. Should have dropped out after two miles, only stupid stubbornness kept me going. A victim of my own deluded expectations. One good workout doesn't cancel out weeks of crappy training.
Fri 5/26 - PM 30 minutes, mostly around Fresh Pond, with 8 30/90s. Some soreness in legs, but overall feeling fairly spry. First warm humid day of the season, with t-storms and rain showers. Tired after a week that included a couple of longer days at work in addition to late bedtimes, reminiscent of the winter coaching time schedule in a way.
Thu 5/25 - PM 55 minutes very easy in Area 51. A bit longer than I had originally planned for today, quite relaxed effort. In no real hurry, best day yet of the spring, dry with warm temps and lots of sun. Left calf strained somewhat from yesterday's effort, another reason to take it easy. Turtle time in full swing, their tracks are all over the patrol road path.
Wed 5/24 - PM 800 2:22.4 2.5R 800 2:21.3 4.5R 1600 4:49 (2:25, 2:24) 3.5R 800 2:21 2.5R 800 2:19.4. Best workout in a long while. Near perfect conditions and wearing spikes certainly helped, good turnover. After the first repeat I was worried I had started too fast but everything after it fell into line. Able to hit all the numbers and save the fastest for last. Finished feeling spent, slow relaxed cooldown. Not feeling especially great during the day, also tired from a couple of nights that were later than they should have been. Some soreness in left calf and achilles after the cooldown. Cool, breeze cut back just as I was getting going. Hopefully similar conditions on Saturday. This workout has me thinking about shooting for a slightly faster pace for the 5k than I had originally planned.
Tue 5/23 - PM 30 minutes with 8 30/60s. Right quad tendon continues to feel tender, not yet a problem but could be if it gets any worse. As it is, loosened up fine after a few minutes of jogging. Pickups felt relaxed and under control. Continued breezy conditions.

Mon 5/22 - PM 90 minutes in Lincoln woods. Had it stuck in my head that I would do a 90 minute progression run today, even with the hard effort yesterday. Feeling it a bit, but not so much as to make it impossible to move well the last half hour and esp. the last 15 minutes. Overall felt pretty good, although right quad tendon was sore all day at work and right hip/adductor/knee continues to be wound up tighter than I'd like. Cool, persistently breezy day, not at all bad in the woods under cover of the trees but blustery out in the open. It occurred to me that the intensity level of this run could set me back for Wednesday's workout and Saturday's race, but I plan on taking it quite easy the other days between now and then. We'll see.
