Sun 6/24 - AM 85 minutes, Track road to Area 51. Not particularly looking forward to this, but it turned out much better than expected. After the expected soreness for the first 30 minutes or so, took a stretch/massage break, and it steadily loosened up after that. The exercises are having an effect. It helped to stay on relatively smooth, flat terrain, because the lateral left ankle is involved in this as well and turning it all over the place, like on Wednesday, makes the whole thing worse.
Sat 6/23 - PM 60 minutes, GMNWR and downtown Concord. An unpleasant experience, pain a constant. I'll continue to do the exercises I discovered the other day, and got some good massage work on the soleus and some affected areas on the shin itself, but these only help so much. Frustrating.
Fri 6/22 - PM 85 minutes, White Pond road to Red Acre and over to Mt. Hope, back via railbed. Short break at 35 minutes and a 20 minute popsicle/stretch/massage break at 60 minutes. Pain in shin constant over the first hour, maybe a little better after the long break. Pushing the limits of manageability. Maybe it's all the running. Scattered showers, but cool for this time of year.
Thu 6/21 - PM 90+ minutes, Walden woods. For most of the run, this was another exercise in pain tolerance. Soreness in shin not any better than yesterday at the outset. Stops at 25 minutes to stretch, 50 minutes to stretch and massage, and 75 minutes for a dip. All stops were needed, and the quick massage did the most good, the remainder of the run felt better if not exactly smooth. Optimism surged on the discovery of some very simple exercises for ankle flexor muscles that should have a beneficial effect in the long term. This may be the light at the end of the tunnel.
Wed 6/20 - PM just under 80 minutes, Pratt's Brook to Great Hill, back via railbed. Shin was bothersome the whole time, not especially surprising after yesterday's faster running. A bummer nonetheless. Stopped twice to stretch, only helped somewhat. Felt like I was hobbling most of the way. Pushing manageability to its limit. Six sort-of strides near the end but it felt awfully clunky and awkward. Left ankle took plenty of dings running on the rocky Great Hill trails in clunky shoes with orthotics. More of an issue that I would have hoped.
Tue 6/19 - PM Lowell 30 minute warmup, 5k plus in 19:40, 25 minute warmdown. Cruising along to a sterling 18 minute clocking when I ran off course and got lost near the end. Effort wise the 5k was a controlled fade, felt myself slowing down the second mile and didn't force anything. Very warm evening contributed to this, but mostly it's lack of fitness. Overall, the run followed a similar pattern to recent days, shin sore and tight early on and gradually loosened up, only feelng better after a significant stretch break--in this case, after the warmup. Orthotics still absolutely necessary to do any kind of running at all.

Mon 6/18 - PM 75 minutes, Levittown to 10 Spencer via Mt. Hope, back on rail bed. Shin stiff and sore for quite a while to start, took half the run to lose the hitch in the stride. Extended break came at 50 minutes today instead of earlier, and the run back home felt completely different after some stretching. Much smoother, rolling somewhat at the end. Warm and breezy today, but dry.
