Sun 10/23 - PM Mayor's Cup, 26:38 in a waterlogged mudbath. Splits of 5:05, 10:36, 16:40ish at 5k, 21:26 at 4m, useless for comparison purposes since course is rarely in this poor of a condition. Gusty wind to go along with bad footing. Not expecting my best ever effort, and it wasn't forthcoming. Stayed up too late last night, no taper to speak of. Had to make a conscious effort to hold back from 3-4 instead of going after it, and it cost me a few places at the end. Warmup was a scatterbrained mess, losing track of things and running back and forth to set up the canopy tent that nobody ended up using. Interrupted bouts of jogging with 4 strides on the starting line. Tired but not much of a post-race headache on the cooldown. Things will go much better at New Englands in two weeks regardless of the conditions, with more regular stretching, a taper, and sticking to an earlier bedtime.
Sat 10/22 - AM 75 minutes, Pratt's Brook to Great Hill, back via rail bed. Downright chilly and dank to start, things warmed up somewhat as the morning went along. Feeling okay for running at this time of day but flowing along effortlessly. Some stickiness in left leg now. Five pickups on the way home, again feels somewhat better than yesterday.
Fri 10/21 - AM 18 minutes again on the treadmill, same exact run as yesterday morn. PM 70 minutes, Area 51. Thought I was feeling ready to roll at first, but had to cut back at various times during the run so as not to get ahead of myself. 4 pickups on the way in, felt better than yesterday but right hip still could be better. Not really cutting back much for Sunday's race.
Thu 10/20 - AM 18 minutes on the treadmill, 2.3 miles. Moving just a bit by the end, but not really. At that early hour it certainly felt like it. PM 70 minutes or so, rail bed to Mt. Hope and back via White Pond Road. 4 strides on the way in. Much less sore than yesterday, although right hip didn't feel so hot doing the strides at the end. Able to increase the pace as the run progressed much more than yesterday, bouncing back from Tuesday's workout.
Wed 10/19 - PM 60 minutes or so in Area 51 (aka happy hunting grounds). Predictably stiff and sore, the psoas area not as bad as I would have expected. Thanks to food co-op, no time to stretch either. Loosened up somewhat towards the end but the pace never really got going. High water all over the place back in the woods made for a sloppy mess in places. Spooked four deer, more than the average visit.
Tue 10/18 - AM 18 minutes on the treadmill, back to being bored and uncomfortable on the thing. Too GD early to be on the thing. PM 10x3 minutres with 1.5R on the Chestnut Hill Reservoir path. Felt as good as can be expected for Tuesday, length of the workout required some early discretion. Tried to squeeze out some extra effort the last 30 seconds or so of each rep. Some were into the wind which was no fun, #8 especially. Upon finishing up, both psoas but particularly the left one became tight as a drum. This made getting started on the cooldown quite a chore. Area is desperately in need of stretching/massage, tough to fit in after getting home late. Tough to fit in tomorrow with the food co-op.

Mon 10/17 - PM 60 minutes, Area 51. Feeling a bit frisky from the get-go, loosened up well enough as the run went along but still feeling a bit tired from the weekend. Not feeling up for strides at the end. Almost as windy today as yesterday. Some tightness in hip flexor/psoas area, esp. on left side.
