Sun 5/20 - AM Run for the Woods, 15:42. Third go-round with this race, first loss, time right in the middle of the range (previous efforts of 15:33 and 15:48). The shinsplint nightmare continues. Tossed and turned more than usual due in part to anxiety over how it would feel to run. As a result, even more flat and tired than I've felt the previous two times for this race. Resorted to ibuprofen for the first time in years. Warmup a teeth-gritting experience, better after stretching, as expected didn't notice it much during the race. Shadowed every step of the first 2.9m by the eventual winner, tried again and again to break him w/o success. He made the final pass at the base of the gradual hill leading up to the finish and I knew I was done and gave up. Completely spent after trying in vain to dump the guy while tired to begin with. He proceeded to put 15 seconds on me in the last 400 yards. Having not kept track of time at all during the race, I was surprised to see how fast the time was because I wasn't expecting anything better than 16:00 even if pushed. Some solace in that, despite all the shin bullshit and sleep problems there is some fitness there. Slow cooldown and shin pain returned, as expected. PM 40 minutes easy, outskirts of Area 51. As much as anything, I wanted to see how the leg felt with the motrin having worn off. About what I expected, 5 minutes of limping and hobbling most of the rest of the time. Tib anterior was the most notably tight/sore area, used the lacrosse ball on it afterwards. Like Friday, leg ended up feeling better after the run and stretching and massage than it did before or during. We'll see if it's still worse tomorrow.
Sat 5/19 - AM 65 minutes easy, Area 51. Left shin didn't respond quite as well as I had hoped to the more intensive massage work, once again limping for five minutes and took over 30 minutes to loosen up in the slightest. Morning stiffness could have something to do with it, or it could be that the damn thing is so inflamed at this point that the soreness and pain is a given. Continued to work on the fdl, anterior muscle, and upper gastroc. The whole area is needless to say a mess. This past week has been a steady deterioration and I'm waiting to see where it bottoms out. Yesterday's rain rolled right into today's rain, monotonous and obnoxious.
Fri 5/18 - PM 70 minutes very easy, Area 51. As expected, shin was very sore upon waking up, and this persisted throughout the work day. Yesterday's workout has pushed things to a new and unwelcome level of pain and stiffness. Some hands-on treatment of the fdl muscle helped alleviate things a bit, still limping for the first five minutes. Unable to go faster than an easy jog, not that I had any plans of doing so. More massaging after the run as well. Lots of tightness in the area, but I'm convinced the root cause is the fdl being compromised and that's where my efforts will be focused. Sunday is looking problematic to say the least.
Thu 5/17 - PM Bentley 4800 16:28 4R 3200 10:40 3R 1600 5:07, all of it run even-paced. A controlled effort except for the last two laps, at which point I was straining somewhat. Conditions on the cool side, with ENE breeze but could have been worse (like yesterday or tomorrow). Shinsplints made things interesting, much more than I would have liked. Compressions on the medial side near the tibia seemed to help a lot in relieving some of the tension, but tib. anterior muscle feeling tight as a drum. Had the pegleg feeling early in the workout, eventually endorphins kicked in and the 1600 was the smoothest of the three reps. The area started tightening up almost immediately after finishing the workout and continued to do so during the cooldown, which felt worse than the workout. It's certainly getting worse with each passing workout, I'm not looking forward to how it will feel tomorrow at all. Runs are becoming a pain threshold test. Continued stretching and massage on tap, possibly ice as well. The whole area is so damn tight right now.
Wed 5/16 - off. Combination of miserable weather, driving rain with plunging temps, and continued tightness and soreness in the shin made the choice not to run a no-brainer. I'll be interested to see how it feels tomorrow after the day off.
Tue 5/15 - PM just under 75 minutes, Area 51. Tib/shin combo feeling as bad as ever after yesterday's workout. First 10 minutes were agonizing, next 20 only slightly better. Things improved noticeably after a break to stretch the calf muscles, still the area was tight and sore straight through. Did some compressions on it after the run. The whole thing has gotten very old, and it may well get worse before it gets better.

Mon 5/14 - PM Bentley 1600 4:55, 4.5R, 3(3x400) with about 80 seconds rest within each set and 4:15 between sets. Aiming for a 68/73 split, first set went 68.1, 68.2, 68.6, middle set 71.9, 73.2, 73.2, final set 69.1, 69, 69.3. The numbers don't lie, I couldn't have run a 68 on that final set with a lion chasing me. The effort was there, but there was a feeling of lingering fatigue from the weekend's high volume and Saturday's insomnia. Striking difference between how much more manageable the middle set felt compared to the faster sets. Shin still sore, tib anterior definitely sore as a result of favoring it, and this didn't help as it compromises running economy. More compressions needed on the shin part of the problem as that's the root cause.
