Sun 9/18 - AM "the Josh" 6m course in 32:42, slower by a minute than last year. So I was deluding myself after all about feeling better than last week's crapfest of a workout. The downturn in fitness is most definitely official now. Could have felt more refreshed upon waking up in the morning, but things cleared soon enough. Right leg more stiff than I would have liked during the 30 minute jog warmup, it ended up being noticeably sore and restricted during the race itself. Conditions similar somewhat to last year, less wind and maybe higher humidity. Mile markers wildly inaccurate by and large, but the overall time doesn't lie. Finished with the headache indicative of a hard effort which makes it all the more discouraging. Mind/body disconnect again, this level of effort should translate into a faster pace. Fall racing season is starting to look like a wash.
Sat 9/17 - PM 40 minutes or so at Tanglewood. Out and back on the last bit of the Josh Billings course with five strides at the end. Today's strides didn't feel as good as yesterday's, alas. The muggy conditions all week continued unabated today. Overall, feeling much better than I did a week ago which is good since the race tomorrow may be closer than I would like, hopefully it won't be. Backing off on the volume for the last week has helped me bounce back from the funk I was in.
Fri 9/16- PM Laundry run of just under an hour. Yesterday's barefoot shenanigans left me with a sore left foot and right hip, but they loosened up some after a few minutes of jogging. Finished up with six solid strides on River street, first time doing that in a long while and they felt good.
Thu 9/15- PM Run to ABRHS via Pratt's Brook, took 35 minutes. A little longer than expected, had to pick up the pace to make it there in time. Spent a few minutes visiting, then drills and strides barefoot on the turf field. Used the length of the field this time and it felt great. Put the shoes back on and headed home in the gathering darkness, took 30 minutes. Moving right along the last mile or so. Overall felt good today, better than expected.
Wed 9/14 - PM 100 minutes or so in Walden woods. A solid run, likely the longest of the week given Sunday's upcoming race. Started slowly, feeling stiff in spots from yesterday's hills. Somewhat tired still, but not as bad today as it has been recently. Right TFL getting tight towards the end, hampered my efforts to pick up the pace, but again, not so much as in recent weeks. Third day in a row of heat and humidity, more like mid-August than mid-September. Double-dipped in Walden as a result which made the run go much better. Got in a good stretch afterwards, something that's been lacking lately.
Tue 9/13 - PM warmup the long way from NN to the hill via BC, 9 hills alternating slow/medium/fast, cooldown the long way back. Warmup and cooldown added up to something around an hour, the hills about 18 minutes or so including the jog recoveries. Averaged 52/49/47 seconds for the hills, 75-80 seconds on the way down. The idea of alternating speeds on the godforsaken hill had never occurred to me before, I like it a lot. The workout felt much more manageable, not digging deep on every single rep as in the past. The fact that the workout was shorter helped as well, just what the doctor ordered for me. Right leg was twinging pretty hard all day at work, I was worried I'd be dragging it along, but not so bad after some hands-on work with the TFL area just before we started the warmup. Another hot day, insufferably humid, ill reminder of last month's slogfest conditions.

Mon 9/12 - PM 70 minutes in Acton, Nagog Hill to Bulette Road. Planned on doing my drills and strides again on the turf field, but it was overrun by soccer shrimps. Felt like my cookies had been stolen. Gave it a half-hearted attempt on real grass but it wasn't happening. Still feeling flat, trying to bounce back from the malaise of the last week. Right thigh still stiff at times, has been worse recently. Significantly warmer and more humid today than it has been, an unwelcome development.
