Sun 8/13 - AM 10k race in Auburn NY, 33:52. Felt terrible from the get-go. Slept poorly the night before a morning race yet again, after a week of not sleeping enough to begin with. I was toast. Feeling too slothful to do much of a warmup, listless 15 minute jog with no strides as the officials wouldn't allow it. Went out at 5:20 pace for the first 3 miles, which had been my intended "go no slower" pace from the outset. Immediate and irreversible changeover to 5:35 pace the second half of the race. Unable to go any faster, unable to push myself, same old story when racing while tired. Passed by kids, old people, you name it. The course was fair but not that hard, if anything a good course to run negative splits. To top it all off, right leg still feeling like dung, twinging during the first mile and sore afterwards. Very easy 30 minute cooldown, truly outstanding late summer day with low humidity. PM 45 minutes very very slow on Norwottuck rail trail. Trying to work out the stiffness in my right hip, with only moderate success. It's gummed up real good.

Sat 8/12 - AM 45 minutes in Area 51, 6 strides on the way in. Right hip messed up from yesterday, stuck and not tracking right and this left me out of sorts for the whole run. Hopefully it will feel better tomorrow.

Fri 8/11 - PM 90+ minutes in Walden woods. Feeling a bit tired and sore from yesterday at the outset, but over time felt better and moving well the last 20 minutes especially. The trend of moving smoothly up hills continues. Hurdle walkovers after the run. Spectacular sparkler of a day, better conditions than one could ever hope to expect for this time of year.

Thu 8/10 - PM 105 minutes in Lincoln woods. Feeling desperately tired on the drive over from work, nodding off at the wheel which is always fun. Stuck in a bad bedtime rut after returning from the trip out west. Run started slowly and gradually gathered steam, moving along pretty well the last half hour. I have the distinct feeling that my lung capacity has increased as a result of the time spent at altitude, although it may just be a sign of improved gas exchange in the bloodstream instead. Whatever, hills are easier. Depressingly, with each deep breath post-run I can feel the effect the dirtier air around here is having on my breathing passages, something conspicuously absent in FLG. Forgot to do plyos today.

Wed 8/9 - PM 70 minutes, rail bed to Great Hill, went down "the wall" for the first time while there, over to ABRHS track for 6 barefoot strides on the smooth fake grass, back via rail bed again with a stop at 10 Spencer. Feeling tired and right leg slightly out of sorts at the outset. Got somewhat better as the run went along. Stride felt airy after a while, maybe a little too airy. Shooting for around an hour, went a bit over but could have gone longer if I wanted.

Tue 8/8 - PM 95 minutes, Walden woods. Overall feeling better than yesterday, right thigh starting to work itself out. A delightfully dry day with a cool NW breeze, weather about as good as can be expected for this time of year. After the run did a series of hurdle walk-throughs.

Mon 8/7 - PM 95 minutes, Pratt's Brook to Great Hill, brief stop at 10 Spencer and then back via Mt. Hope and Levittown. Back to reality and the daily grind, dragging at work most of the day. Soul-sucking humidity made the run less than enjoyable, along with continued soreness in right thigh. I'm about ready for charley to take his horse and get out of town. Did 7 strides near the end and legs felt dead. Despite all this, still grinding up hills with relative ease. Need to sleep more.
