Sun 3/12 - AM 5m road race in Raynham, 26:44. Far from a stellar effort, but for whatever reason I feel like it was worthwhile nonetheless. Mile splits were 5:03, 5:21, 5:30, 5:20, and 5:30. The only hill to speak of came right after 4 miles, and miles 2 and 3 were straight into a persistent headwind. I have my doubts about the accuracy of both the splits and the course as a whole, it certainly seemed a bit long. Hill or no hill, I did not run the last mile of that course in 5:30. After getting dragged out faster than I should have the first mile, things settled into something of a rhythm the rest of the way. Effort-wise it was located in the nether region between a true tempo run and a race, but definitely closer to being a race. Not that the tempo runs we do are true tempo runs either. I suppose the last four miles viewed separate from the first would have been an excellent tempo effort for me right now. Slow time shows how far out of shape I've fallen since last month. Overdid it a bit today but far from a tragedy. Self-protection kicks in when I'm in a vulnerable frazzled state such that pushing myself to the absolute limit is impossible. Warmup was shorter than I would have liked, cooldown was 40 minutes very easy. Calves very sore the rest of the day, not a surprise.
Sat 3/11 - AM Lincoln tempo loop, the hilly one, at 6:10 pace. Serving as a pacemaker for a distaff member of the club, laying low before tomorrow's planned harder effort. Continued signs that I'm lower than whale shit at the moment, on top of the general malaise legs continue to be suprisingly alarmingly sore, esp. right adductor. Remains to be seen whether it's just a matter of readjustment to higher training volume or the sign of a more persistent overtraining. Certainly intensity of runs this week was low except for Tuesday's workout. Not especially optimistic about how things will go tomorrow, not that it matters. Cold clear windy conditions returned after yesterday's abnormally warm day.
Fri 3/10 - AM 30 minutes easy, Abbott Road. I've felt better. Planned PM run went by the boards as I was exhausted from the cumulative effect of not sleeping enough all week. Pulse has been elevated at rest.
Thu 3/9 - AM 25+ minutes, Brook Path to Washington St. Very slow heading out, turned around and picked up the pace quite a bit. Feeling much better than yesterday needless to say. PM 65+ minutes in Area 51. Felt good at first, then somewhat more tired as I was slipping on uneven surfaces in the gathering dark. Left hammie better but still twinging a bit, as is right hip flexor. Not a whole lot of pep in the legs at this point, not that I'm expecting it. Dank conditions settled in during the course of the day.
Wed 3/8 - AM 30 minutes very very slow, Abbott Rd to fields. Continuation of last night's cooldown. Still morning chill, but far less windy of late PM 45+ minutes very easy, Area 51. Really not moving much quicker than the morning run, still feeling tired and stiff. Left hammie needed some TLC while at work. Someone actually told me I looked tired today, an accurate description. Dead still conditions outside, pleasant to say the least.
Tue 3/7 - AM 25 minutes, Wellesley roads and fields. A shambling mess, forgot my razor and went to both supermarkets looking to buy one with no success. Went to work sporting the stubble instead. Hip flexors continue to be stiff. Teflon consciousness took over last night, probably worried about furnace cutting out again and had great difficulty falling asleep. PM RLTAC 2x(8x400 1R), 5R+ between sets. With some minor deviations, consistently hitting between 71.5 and 72 seconds, not that impressive but a solid effort given I was dragging big-time by the time the workout arrived. I have my doubts that I would have been able to complete longer repeats due to being close to exhaustion. Deceptively long workout. Feeling sore in both hammies but esp. left one. Cooldown was a 15 minute crawl inside, barely moving at times.

Mon 3/6 - AM 30 minutes, Wellesley brook path. Out to Nehoiden and back along Washington St. Wind has finally lapsed a bit, still cold but more comfortable than last week. PM 65+ minutes very easy, Area 51. Lots of stiff areas from yesterday's long effort on the trails, feeling it on anything not a smooth level surface. Huffing and puffing despite the slow pace. Decided to do strides despite feeling less than stellar, it was a good decision as the pickups broke up the monotony of just slogging along.
