Sunday 10/1 - 95 minutes very very slow, Track road to Area 51. As I expected it would, right hip area swelled up overnight. A tale of two legs as I ran along with practically zero range of motion on the right side while the left side felt fine. The contrast between the two sides was striking. The line between healthy and injured is getting blurred here as what I was doing could barely be called running. Right side loosened up only marginally by the end of things. Light drizzle became increasingly strong rain, welcome to October.

Sat 9/30 - AM Applefest half-marathon in just under 80 minutes. Where do I begin with this turd of an effort. Long story short, way too tired to put forth any kind of sustained effort like this distance and course require, plus right hip was sore from the beginning and as things went on, everything around it got tighter and tighter until I was half-limping along. Warmup was too short for the prior reason, cooldown too short for the latter. Racing lasted through 6 miles, first 4 in 22 minutes, next two in 11:40 at which point I fell out of the money, knew I was going backwards, and so lost interest and sunk like a stone. Dropping out would have been best but the layout of the course and the fact my car was near the finish made it impractical, so I saw things through to the bitter end. Particularly galling is that had I put forth a similar effort to last year's race, which was under similar conditions, I would have been duking it out for the win. And I didn't think that much of last year's effort at the time. The lack of sleep and continued issues with swelling/soreness in the right hip have come to dominate things in a wholly unwelcome way. PM 60 minutes superslow jog in Area 51. Had a daylong debeate with myself about whether to try a run, a walk, or just sit on my ass, but I wanted to loosen things up in the hip so I could do some stretching. All in all it was worthwhile as my leg did feel better and less gummed up after ambling along.

Fri 9/29 - PM 50 minutes easy in Area 51. Right hip not quite as sore as the past two days, but sufficiently stiff that I had to take a pass on doing strides as planned. Cool breezy evening, almost blustery, likely to be similar for tomorrow which isn't a bad thing.

Thu 9/28 - PM 60+ minutes easy in Area 51. Right hip quite sore at the start, got somewhat better but overall bothersome. I was expecting some DOMS but not to this degree. A meandering dawdle at times, with various stops. More active recovery leading to Saturday.

Wed 9/27 - PM 90 minutes, Trader Joe's trip. A bit longer than I had planned for today's run, but went very very easy so it wasn't a problem. Right hip stuck and sore, greatly reduced range of motion. Didn't loosen up that much, a big part of the reason why the pace was so slow. Not a surprise after last night's workout. Warm day, cool evening, the most wonderful time of the year weatherwise.

Tue 9/26 - PM 25 minute warmup to BC res, 3(5 min, 4 min) with 2.5R straight through. Right hip was feeling quite stiff and sore during the warmup, but it got better as the workout went along which was a relief. As I expected, the first two reps, and the first one especially, were far too fast as most people went out over their heads, myself included. Dialed it back the middle set, got into a decent groove and worked off the pace set by others. Last set felt a bit faster, with the pace building over the course of each rep. Warmdown went very slowly, shuffling down Comm Ave, hip flexors stiffening up with each step. The next three days are all about making the well as deep as possible for Saturday.

Mon 9/26 - PM 90 minutes, Walden woods incl. loop around Farrar pond. Overall, felt relaxed but legs stiff and awkward, felt like I was stumbling around out there. Still able to do five strides at the end. Spent some quality time with the lacrosse ball last night and found a major adhesion in my lower back that was pulling on everything else that's been problematic lately.
