Sun 7/1 - AM 105 minutes, Walden woods. Longest run in a while. Not moving especially quickly at any time, feeling a bit peaked from yesterday. I did manage to do six strides on the way in. Shin soreness continues to diminish, but it was notable that as time went on and fatigue built up I was stumbling and dinging my left ankle more frequently, This is when wearing the orthotics becomes a liability. From here on out the online log moves to mayall.blogspot.com as it formats better than this.

Sat 6/30 - AM 5k in just over 18 minutes in Portland along a flat gravel path. Stiffness not as bad as it has been, particularly in light of the early hour and higher intensity of effort. Once moving, things felt fine. Felt tempted to go without orthotics but it's too soon for that. Close to shore, so a bit breezy, but another nice day on tap. Warmup of 20+ minutes, repeated the race course as a cooldown at very easy pace. PM 30+ minutes very easy. Not moving especially well after the morning run and all the driving.

Fri 6/29 - AM 40 minutes easy. Took a while to get going this morning, stiff and sore pretty much the whole way. Feeling it from yesterday. Skirted the edge of Area 51, deer flies not nearly as bad at this time of day. Front finally passed through last night, humidity is gone. Brilliant day in its place. PM 50 minutes, run to supermarket via Rockland Ave. First double since coming back from the forced layoff, interested to see if initial stiffness would be less after the morning shakeout and it was. Still not pain-free, feeling some jarring.

Thu 6/28 - PM 80+ minutes, Track Road to Area 51 with the Lake Boon add-on. Still at the manageable stage with the shin, most sore at the start and when starting up again after a break. Today's break came after about 35 minutes with a dip in the lake that was most necessary. The heat pump from the SW still going strong all day, predicted t-storms and cold front late in arriving. Deer flies in Area 51 have reached obnoxious level, at least for the late-afternoon/early evening timeframe. Forced to take the direct route out and finish the run on route 27 instead of the patrol road. Looking to pick up the pace a little at this point but it wasn't really happening. Sore in hip flexors a bit, overheated, and tired from not sleeping nearly enough the past three days due to uncomfortable conditions.

Wed 6/27 - PM 75 minutes, Walden woods. Soreness and extreme heat and humidity resulted in a very slow early pace. Pace improved very gradually after the first 20 minutes or so. Shin not as sore as last Wednesday which is a positive sign, but tib anterior felt swollen. Left ankle continues to be an annoyance on the uneven ground of the trails. Disgusting conditions outside all day, worse than yesterday.

Tue 7/26 - PM Lowell 30 minute easy warmup and strides, 5k in 17:36, 25 minute very slow cooldown. Shin remains sore but manageable, the bulk of the pain seems to have shifted back over to anterior tib/lateral side as opposed to medial side under tibia. Stepping awkwardly at the start of the 5k but overall felt better than last week. It seems to take 45 minutes or so for things to loosen up appreciably, which today would have been the final stages of the 5k itself. Extremely hot and humid, with a gusty west wind. Air quality not the greatest, but it didn't affect me as much as I would have thought.

Mon 6/25 - PM 80 minutes, Walden woods. Hopeful going in that the entire run would be as pain-free as the final stages of yesterday's run, but the pattern was more similar to yesterday in that it took 30+ minutes and a stretch break for stiffness to loosen up. It's becoming increasingly clear to me that the root of the problem goes back to February when I turned the left ankle on a patch of ice and left the lateral aspect of my left leg weakened from ankle to knee. Rebuilding strength in this area. Finished feeling close to smooth. Warmer and more humid today than it has been the past few days, with the expected sore airway afterward.
