Zenkoku OVA & Tenimyu
Thursday, November 30, 2006 08:13 a.m.
PoT OVA Spoiler alert!
I had planned to wait until all of the National Tournament OVA was out and subbed before I would watch any of it. But, meh, I wanted to start watching it now. Some of the glimpses I caught while file checking were too tempting. Tezuka's entrance in ep 1 made me laugh (not loudly, just some chuckling, it's so silly). And the way everyone just gawked and lusted awed over him. <3 And Atobe defending him, hee. I want to see their rematch.
That Kai from Higa though. I think I hate him. Or rather, get really pissed when I see him. Somehow, I can get past players inciting permanent injuries on opponents and rocks being served at little kids, but hitting a high speed ball into an old man's eye, I can not get over. It took me a second to believe it had happened, and so seriously. To that elderly Rokkaku coach of all people. Man, I was so angry after seeing that. My mind was filled just with visuals of slamming my fist into Kai's face, repeatedly. That fucking piece of shit. -_-;
And I hate that trippy techno thing they have as BGM during the matches. I wish they'd stop using it. It's annoying and also reminds me of crappy Invitational matches.
I think of the upcoming Yagyuu/Kaidoh doubles to make me happy again. I've only watch 2 eps so far. I shouldn't watch them all at once... the subs are released rather slowly.
I haven't gotten around to watching all of the Rokkaku musical yet, just mostly file checked and watched a few minutes when something interesting caught my eye. I had liked both Yanagi and Endou, but I already do not like this new guy as Ryoma. At the moment, I can't be bothered to look up names.
The guy who's playing Inui seems more like he's trying to be Araki-Inui rather than actual Inui, or even his own brand of Inui. But Yay! Kujirai-Kaidoh! <3 The new Horio doesn't seem bad either.
With the PoT series, I am a "character" fan rather than a "team" fan. I don't have a favorite team, I don't like one team entirely, nor do I like a character or root for a player based on the team he's on. But for the musicals, my favorite team is definitely Hyoutei. :) I like watching them the best and they have good songs, even though in this musical they are the "guest" team. Atobe gets another solo! And a rather long one at that. With the stage all to himself. In a bathrobe. So apparently, they are not just popular with me.
I've also watched both the PoT animated movie, and the live action movie. While they both certainly deserve a post of their own, I don't really feel like talking about them. o_O;
ETA: Oh yeah, I almost couldn't deal with how cute this was: Snakes on a Plane

Dang, my name was banned from one of the games on Orisinal.com. My top scores won't show up on the board anymore, unless I use a different name. I didn't even spam it or anything. And the scores are reset every couple of days anyway. So wth...
I also spent too much money I don't have on Black Friday, and all I did was shop online. Can't wait til Monday, mhmm.
I had stuff to talk about, but... I can't recall anymore...
So, hmm. The turkey was good. Crazy weather, ain't it?
Oh, HAHA @ Genius 324. Kaoru-chan~ ::patpat::
Saturday, November 18, 2006 07:56 a.m.
Wow, there's a character in that Gakuen Heaven thing who looks like Sanada but with Tezuka's voice! That's almost enough to make me watch that shit. Or not. I'm afraid that's a gross exaggeration. Maybe if the main character/uke wasn't that. And you know, if they changed the entire plot, etc etc. Why do they always look either like that or Omi-esque in these BL things? Those are the two types I can't stand the most. Zzzz....
Oh, this came up because it was Okiayu Ryoutarou's birthday yesterday. Tezuka's seiyuu. <3 And Treize's. And Crawford's. And Nakago's. And Mitsui's. And Ranmaru's. And ALUCARD'S! (did not know that one till today). And the list goes on, of course. That's one hot arsenal. But yeah, Happy Birthday to one lovely-voiced actor.
And whoa, Momoshiro's voice actor is the same as Hikoichi's (Slam Dunk)!! Unburivuburu! I did not make that connection until I read a comment about it and replayed those voices in my head. And it was just LMAO.
I heard the funniest track with him and Okiayu (I think), too. I'd love to share it. But I'm just too damn lazy. And it'd be rude to post the fileshare link someone else uploaded. ETA: Ah, wth, here.
I've the urge to watch Slam Dunk. Again. AGAIN. I better transfer these eps to DVD, before my CDs deteriorate to coasters. My VHS are already semi-crippled.

Wth, poor Tezuka, they made him say and think all that weird shit, LOL. Konomi should protest over how they mess with his characters. But I can forgive some of the chibi eps. And the Kaidoh stuff.
The finish line is right around the corner.
Goddamn, these really suck. To end a series with filler-arc... That seems to be a common fate (of death) among anime series. You'd think they'd learn from it already. I hear NARUTO's been doing curry.
Looks like Berserk had the right idea.
ETA 177-178: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Good art though. XD More fighting anime scenes should look that good, ROFL.
Okay, but I did tear up a little at the end. :*|
Even though I want to, I can't sigh over how there's no more, since there are still the dinosaurs to see in the movie, and Inui's buttcrack in the OVA.
Death Note
Monday, November 6, 2006 05:22 a.m.
I been messing around with the blog top image. About time I did *something* new.
For some reason, I keep thinking I have more Mushishi to watch, and then a second later, disappoint myself. So, I went and picked up something else to get my mind off it.
Death Note - For a long time now, I've heard great things about the manga, but never pushed myself to go check it out. Now it's animated and I've watched the 5 episodes that have been released so far. Interesting stuff. Gratifying in a way that's different from Mushishi, though it doesn't keep my eyes stuck to it like Mushishi did. I am looking forward to seeing how the plot progresses though. I don't recall watching many (or any, atm) anime with suspense done this well and at the same time, so fast-paced.
One of the things that impressed me most I think, was how it actually answers the many questions that might come up about some of the dubious events that happen. It actually bothers to cover its plot holes. Questions and criticisms I have after watching one ep are found answered in the next ep. How rare is that in anime? I won't say it's 100%, but it's done a relatively good job of it so far. And maybe even my remaining questions will be answered further down the line.
Mu...shi...shi...

Mushishi! Official site.
'Nother official site. With some nice screencap samples.
Aahh, it's over at episode 26. =( So good. So, so good. But I guess this is a positive thing, in a way. Since I didn't even realize Funimation intends to acquire rights to the series, and I may have just made it before the fansubbers dropped the project. So, at least I got to see it to its completion! Would have REALLY sucked if I had to sit and wait at least a year to see the rest of it.
Too bad C1 dropped it with just one episode unfinished. -_-; Would have been nice to have the complete set by them. ANBU just recently released the last eps. This series is special enough that I want to have both translations. I'm still not sure which version I like better. They both have their good points. I think I like C1's translation more overall, but ANBU's are clearer in explanation at some points. Though I haven't watched all the eps done by them yet, I think ANBU's style is more "natural" in vernacular. I usually don't mind more literal translations in anime/manga, since I might find myself translating the phrase into Chinese, and it often helps me "get" it better than the general English equivalent. So I guess that's just me finding C1's translation friendly in that way. I also like their translation notes on the Mushi names.
I'm tempted to get the DVDs, too, when I can afford them. The Japanese set will be expensive x_x. But I doubt the packaging of the US release will be anywhere near as nice.
After what may be two years or more, I am finally going to change my desktop wallpaper to a Mushishi one... (at least temporarily) All those pretty scenes, it just begs to be wallpaper, ya kno.
Ginko's cool. =)
Manga? Maaaybee.... I will go check it out.... now.
Mushishi

I just started watching this series. It's a nice and sedated change of pace, after (finally) finishing Berserk, without clashing with the after-mood like switching to humor might have. (WTH at the end of Berserk, but I'm not gonna get into that. Yet.)
The premise of the story is a little strange. But not to be compared with the completely bizarre like Utena, or series like that. After a few eps, it seems to be about a supernatural that's natural. Not really ghosts or aliens or anything like that. Just small-scale strange phenomena, and this man who goes around remedying them while researching the "Mushi" that cause them.
This man, the main character, Ginko, reminds me an awful lot of Kakashi, and I'm sure others must have noticed their similarities as well. It has a lot to do with Ginko's physical appearance, with his white shaggy hair, and he's even missing his left eye. I had thought so from when I first saw his image at animenewsnetwork. But even more so from his whole lazy face and general mellow attitude. He could almost be an A/U Kakashi, sans tragic past and ninja killer-instinct, etc. For me, he's a very charming character, like Kakashi, but without the edge.
I'm liking it, it entertains me just to see how he approaches and (non)reacts to situations. I didn't truly start enjoying it until the end of episode two though. The first episode was only so-so and I probably only continued to the next ep because of the potential enigma Ginko may present, the soothing art and muted colors of the animation, and because I like this style of anime. A bit like the moods of Vampire Princess Miyu OVA during the non-action sequences.
The second episode was good, and the piece of information you suddenly discover about Ginko at the end really sells it. Then the third episode was *very* good and it makes me feel I can officially say I'm watching the series. That little boy was SO cute, hehe. And the story for that one, and the "Ah" and "Un" truly had me very curious.
So, I'll be downloading the rest. I'm currently watching the subs done by C1Anime, but ANBU just finished it too. I only compared the first 5 minutes of the first episode done by each of them and wasn't able to decide which was better. But I may check out ANBU's later on also, just to read a different version of the translation and maybe clear up a little more of the stranger details and explanations.
ETA: 10 eps in one sitting! They're like potato chips. >_< I can't stop, even though the episodes don't link with each other. Just reading the title of the next ep makes me curious and want to watch it. And I think it's cool how there's no official ED. The backgrounds really are nice to look at, and the animation is smooth. The music is good too.

And the etc.
I find it funny how some Yukimura fans get so worked up that they would rant about things like how, "Yukimura would TOTALLY OWN [insert skilled player, usually Tezuka] in a match." Yeah, there's been a lot of hype built around his skill, and I'm not arguing that it isn't possible. But it's ridiculous to hear such outright claims since we've yet to even see Yukimura play. Not even a bit! Seriously, where does their certainty come from? o_O It's like saying Tom Hanks will win an Oscar for his next role in a movie. It just makes them sound stupid, and doesn't make me think more of Yukimura, and actually makes me hope to see the opposite outcome just to have them see how ridiculous it was, even though I hadn't cared either way originally.
Character-wise, we've actually seen some of him, and I could imagine a very domineering personality from him. But tennis, all we know is what we've been told. I'm not going to be saying he's beating anyone with it until I actually see what it is he can do. Even Konomi had stated, I think, that right now the three top JHS players were Tezuka, Sanada and Yukimura, and he didn't name a #1. If Yukimura was meant to be so far above and beyond, I don't think he would have bothered saying such a thing.

Aiyyeee, I'm so uninformed! I need to see Huo Yuan Jia/Legend of a Fighter/Fearless, what's supposed to be Jet Li's final martial arts role. It looks pretty cool. And I love tournaments. :D Maybe I'll be able to find it tomorrow.
Yoshiki@Otakon + Tenimyu
Saturday, August 5, 2006 03:14 p.m.
At the moment, my brother is standing in line at Otakon, trying to get me Yoshiki's autograph. Things aren't looking good. =( Apparently, Yoshiki's taking his time, including sketches with his signings. Which makes missing out all the more crappy. =( Ah well.
So, back during July 4 weekend, I spent a bunch of time watching the Prince of Tennis musicals!! Indeed, I am willingly making this public knowledge. Sure, it's got a huge following, but stage tennis? Magical anime singing dancing stage tennis, no less. Oh well, the deed is done.
So my reaction? At first, it really was "Wtflmao," but that was also my reaction to Anipuri, and that didn't keep me from leaving the file running. It did help a LOT though, I think, that the first one I watched was the Hyoutei in Winter performance. That one happened to be the best one, by far. I doubt if I had watched them in order that I would have bothered with the musicals after the first one. Even with my first viewing of Hyoutei in Winter, I had skipped around scenes, looking only for the interesting bits. Then I watched the Backstage for that musical, and actually seeing the actors more personally and naturally (wow, they are all dorks), made the actual performance more curious and worth paying attention to. So, off I went to watch it for real.
The ones that caught most of my attention immediately (and still do), were the actors who played Tezuka and Atobe (and no, I'm sure it's not just coincidence =P), Shirota Yuu and Katou Kazuki, respectively. They really stood out, though I'm sure their large roles in the musical had much to do with it. In the backstage too, they get a lot of attention. Though in Shirota's case, he's always doing something to grab the attention, hehe. It's ironic that the actor who plays the most stoic character in PoT is the wackiest/weirdest one amongst them. His antics are really entertaining. XD
And speaking of antics, I have to say KENN and Miyano's little impressions skit was AWESOME. ROFL!
Katou was casted very well as Atobe. I think he did a pretty awesome job. I watched the Hyoutei summer performance and he wasn't nearly as good. In this second run, he looked much more comfortable in the role.
Another thing that should be noted about Tenimyu is that singing proficiency doesn't seem to be much of a pre-requisite before you're casted (though dancing is). Most of them are not-impressive at best. Tezuka and Atobe, actually, were the best singers by far, in this musical. Probably another factor as to why I focus on them. Their duet, "Ikkiuchi" is hot. And "Ore-sama no bigi ni boogie woogie"? LOL, I love that song. I loved all the Hyoutei songs, actually.
As for the other actors, Saitou (Oshitari)'s voice is sex. Where in the world did they find him? I could easily imagine him doing the voice acting in the anime. Kamakari makes an ADORABLE Shishido!! ::pets:: Kotani (Kawamura), Kujirai (Kaidoh), and Kawaai (Hiyoshi) did really good jobs as their characters, I thought. Especially Kawamura, which must have been hard. JURI was awesome as Akutsu, as well.
Hmm, so original Seigaku cast vs second Seigaku cast. I didn't like the original cast as much as the second cast, though I didn't watch the early ones first, like most other fans. However, I do wish Aoyama had stayed on as Inui, since I thought he was leagues better as Inui than Araki. Gomoto was a good Kaidoh, too. Moriyama was a GREAT Momo, but he looked WAY too old, lol. I don't know what's up with Kimeru though. The way he tried to act what I think was supposed to be girly, but came off nothing like feminine, but just plain weird and creepy (and not Fuji-creepy either) ::shudders::. He was much better as Ryoma that one time. Overall, the ichinen trio were the best performers.
Dream Live 3rd was a lot of fun. Katou really let loose his Atobe, which he seems even more comfortable with now, was really great. Yanagi (Ryoma) was so sweet, and it always breaks my heart when I think of his accident. The concert was so sad, I did shed a few tears with them. -_-; Somehow, in just that short span of time, I had already grown rather attached to them, and then they were leaving. I can only imagine how sad older fans must have felt to see the first cast graduate, after having watched them for over a year, while I'm this sad just having known the second cast for a day or two.
The Rokkaku musical opened recently with the newest cast, I think. I admit, I'm not too interested, reason #1 being that I don't care for Rokkaku much, #2 the old Seigaku cast won't be there. I also can't imagine the new ichinen being anywhere near as great as the original trio were. I will watch it though, since I think Hyoutei is supposed to be in it, and I heard Kujirai will be back as Kaidoh since the new Kaidoh fell sick.
Hmmm, who knew I'd be sucked into this whole thing just like with Anipuri. I listen to the Hyoutei musical OST all the time now.
FUCHUU FUCHUU.
Chinese Dreams
Friday, July 21, 2006 12:47 a.m.
Hmm, I missed posting on many things. Oh well. What brings me back here now? Well, there was this interesting independent film shown on Reel NY on PBS a little while ago, that left me somber and thoughtful. But now Conan is on, and the proper mood has past. XP But I'll try to post about it anyway.
So, it was a film titled "Chinese Dreams" and it was completely in Cantonese (though the film maker is Caucasian and from Miami). The film opens in what appears to be the kitchen of a restaurant, and there are three male Chinese workers there. Focus is on the dishwasher, who looks about 20 or so. After their work, they head straight up the back stairs that lead up to a small, cramped one-room apartment above the restaurant. It holds three bunks and a small television; the men share the quarters. We see the dishwasher on the top bunk, staring down at the tv, watching a program about New York City.
Another day at work, their boss (who's so far shown to be strict, sometimes harsh, but not quite cruel) asks them what they want him to bring them. The other two workers just ask for cigarettes, but the dishwasher asks for a magazine about New York City. After some ridicule, the boss agrees to get it for him. Later that day, a nurse is sent to see each of them, which seems to be a usual event, and the dishwasher asks her for information about NYC. She tells him how NYC is not as good of a place to live as China, comparing various things between the two.
The dishwasher later receives the NYC magazine and spends the night under his blanket looking at various photographs of landmark structures and popular tourist spots.
There's a conversation between his bunkmates about how much time they have left there. The younger says he's got 3 years, while the older boasts that he has only 1 year left. When they comment on how they feel sorry for the dishwasher, who must have much more time left than either of them, he shares with them his dream of going to NYC. They mock him, and suggest he try telling their boss this.
The next day, the older kitchen worker presents an opportunity for the dishwasher to bring it up, and so he asks the boss if he could speak with him about something. The boss tells him to finish his work first. We're then shown what looks to be hours upon hours of washing dishes before the dishwasher finally finishes up and hesitantly goes to see his boss in the darkened dining area. He tells him that he wishes to go to NYC, that it's his dream, and asks his boss to help him. The boss, of course, gets very angry, accusing the dishwasher of being ungrateful for all he's done for him; the free housing, food and no need to pay taxes, etc. After pushing the dishwasher to the ground, the boss calms a bit and tells him how well he's been taking care of him and that he can continue to do that. He tells the dishwasher he can come downstairs tomorrow at 7am rather than 6am, as some sort of consolation, and helps him up. He then sends him back upstairs to tell the other two to come down to clean up. The dishwasher goes silently, and he's ascending the back stairs when he suddenly stops to sit on the steps. He gets up again, and it's quite clear that he's decided to run away, escape. He hurries toward a heavy metal door, removing the things in front of it, and rushes outside.
And we see him step out onto a street. By Wo Hop restaurant on Mott Street. In Chinatown. New York City.
~End
It was pretty interesting. From the start, I couldn't quite figure out where they were. I thought most probably Hong Kong, maybe San Francisco. There were various clues throughout the film that suggested the eventual revelation. The workers always referred to the boss as a "jook sing" which pretty much means a Chinese who is born and raised in the US. And the boss called the dishwasher "country boy," which suggested to me that it might be Hong Kong. But the tv program he was watching was in English. The nurse's perspective was also meant as a hint, I think.
It reminds me of a documentary on illegal immigrants in the US they showed a couple of weeks ago. Pretty depressing, and scary. I'm 10 minutes away from the corner the dishwasher stumbled out onto. It just makes you more conscious about, well, everything.
To remind us we fail...??

LOL. From one of the quick "Coming Up Later" announcements for the U.S. vs Italy match:
"[Insert match & time] Keep in mind, Italy is a VERY, very good team. Also, the U.S. has NEVER won a World Cup match on European soil."
Not during a half-time discussion or an interview, that was said to advertise the match before a commercial. o_o
Geez, can you stomp expectations any lower than that? You can give it a little more faith, if only for the sake of competition. XP It's as if to say, they can't be held responsible if you decide to watch the match. Like they're afraid to make it look too hopeful and viewers will be outraged if we see the team lose and send the network hordes of hate mail. I forgot something else abyssmal-sounding a friend told me was in the media; something about them stating the U.S. being in the bracket of death. Even if we lose, the match can still be exciting, as proven by matches previous, yah?
Really, it's odd that discussion of the upcoming match seems to contain more optimism than its advertisement.
ETA: OMG!! Ghana has scored 2 over Czech Rep!!
ETA2: behehe, draw. XP The first half was good, if violent. And even with my novice-eyes, I thought the ref was messed up.
Ohh, showing three games tomorrow. Much better than last weekend.
I still dunno who I'm rooting to win.
World Cup
Saturday, June 10, 2006 01:56 p.m.
The Sweden vs Trinidad & Tobago match was so exciting!! :D
I can't understand how soccer can get so little attention in the US. Just because the sport wasn't "birthed" here like all the popular ones happen to be? Psh. Even golf seems to get more hype here than soccer. -_-
I remember when I was a kid, the only time I would ever see soccer on TV was on the Hispanic channel (no cable). And yes, the age old question, why the hell do we have to call it soccer? RrraarArgh.
PoT has also gotten me watching tennis again, sort of. o_O I don't think I've sat and watched any since the more dominant days of Monica Seles. I hope I remember to watch the French Open final tomorrow.

So, the GIGS single, "Flower -Saki Midareshi Hana-" is out. I can't help but snicker when I listen to it and imagine them singing. It's done with affection, of course. The song's not horrible or too corny, if you don't think about the characters who are singing it. I think the one who sounds most out of place is probably Tezuka. Though Sanada is the one that sounds the most uncomfortable, lol. But Tezuka's seiyuu is still a much better singer than Sanada's. Ah, those two can be made to be such dorks, I love them. I think with these four characters, the possible pairing combinations I'd probably like would be these:
Atobe/Tezuka
Atobe/Ryoma
Tezuka/Ryoma
Ryoma/Tezuka
Ryoma/Sanada
Sanada/Ryoma
Sanada/Tezuka
Tezuka/Sanada (though I might prefer SanaZuka over this one)
Atobe/Sanada (I guess. If it had to be these two, I'd like it in this order)
::scratches head:: Yeah, I think that's all of them. Atobe has seme-ority. XP Atobe-sama no bigi ni yoina!
