Hnggghh... Last night was one of my infamous no-sleep-must-work nights. In this case, it was the submission of my completed storybook for my Writing for Children class, due at 7:30 AM. Barely made it on time. And I still haven't slept more than a three-hour nap this afternoon. And I still have Philosophy orals tomorrow. But I don't feel like sleeping or studying right at this moment, so I'm just going to ramble on and on at length to make up for all the things I've failed to blog about recently. So please bear with me. @______@
Very vague spoiler paragraph for the end of FFX* We finished FFX! When I say we finished it, I mean Carlo played and I watched. Anyway, it was... sad! ;__; I was shocked. Not, come to think of it, that I know what Final Fantasy endings are usually like. I have the vague impression that FF7's end was confusing, and FF8 had a happy ending (Squall and Rinoa got together in the end, right?) But FFX was sad. The sort of uplifting kind of sad, but sad nevertheless.
And through the kindness of a friend, we finally got to see Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi (a.k.a. Spirited Away, a.k.a. that new Miyazaki movie). Sure, it was a bootleg-of-a-bootleg Hong Kong VCD, dubbed in Cantonese, with no subtitles, and you could hear the theatre audience laughing at the funny parts and see people standing up in the corner... but at least we saw it. ^_^ Easily the most bizarre Miyazaki movie of all time, I think. I think that since Mononoke Hime, he's developed this weird fixation on gross gloopy fluid things -- bleeding dragons, muck monsters, and a ghost getting violently sick all over his surroundings. Oh speaking of which, I think my favorite character is Kaonashi. That weird mask-ghost thing. At any rate, I need to find a detailed summary of this movie, or at least get to watch it in Japanese so I can make out a few words. ^^
What, you didn't know The Witches was a book? By the same guy who wrote Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and James and the Giant Peach and Matilda and all these other books that were turned into movies? ^^;; Well, anyway, I read the book a long time ago, but from what I can tell the basic plot points are more or less the same as the movie. They changed the ending quite a bit though; in the original, the kid remains a mouse the rest of his life. ^^
The new He-Man? Weird! Not bad, actually, but it's strange seeing him with that weird RPG sword instead of the old one. At least his hair is better. XD

This week on Samurai Jack: Samurai Jack And The Last Crusade, the Video Game. Jack a bit off-model. Saves He-Man from eternal torment.

Aheheh... I actually *did* buy that Doctor Who parody with Rowan Atkinson in it. ^_^;;
Thursday, February 21, 2002
Just watched a bit of The Witches on HBO. I only ever saw that movie once, and that was ages ago; so I had no idea that Rowan Atkinson and Jane Horrocks were in it! O__O I never really liked the movie for the changes made from Roald Dahl's book, but I would watch it again for Rowan Atkinson any day. ^__^

The Very Secret Diary of Arwen Undomiel, Day 15:

Was just watching a program on Discovery Channel's "Tech Tuesday". It was talking about some guys who are trying to create a "virtual Einstein", programmed with Einstein's knowledge and personality, that would be able to interact with people and answer questions. On that note, I have just come up with the plot for the next big hit sci-fi thriller movie: scientists create about ten or so "virtual Einsteins", who are distributed in various laboratories and institutions around the world. But then the creators discover evidence that one of the Einsteins has developed consciousness; only, they don't know which one it is. So they have to find out, and stop that Einstein from taking over the world. And the movie will be called... "E=Evil2"!!! MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! If some Hollywood scumbag steals my idea, they are so dead. XD
Later on the same program, there was some scientist guy working on getting robots to move on their own, implanting chips in people's bodies, etc. And they were interviewing him in his office, and he had a freaking Dalek in the background. O____o;;;;;; You know, those things from Doctor Who that go around saying "Exterminate! Exterminate!"? Anyway, there was a Dalek there, with little lights on its head glowing menacingly as this guy was talking nonchalantly about people merging with machines and stuff like that. NOT a comforting image, nor one that would make me want to fund this guy's work. Now there's a mad scientist if ever I saw one. @________@;;;;;;;;;;
![]() I'm Sarah. I'm imaginative and creative, though a bit of a brat sometimes. If I use my wits, I'll get what I want. Nobody has power over me!
Take the "Which Labyrinth character are you most like?" quiz by Actually... that's pretty accurate. O__O An online test actually says something about me? Scary!
EEEEEE! Thank you! It's so adorable! *__* Ahh, Harry Potter and Akazukin Chacha: two great flavors, together at last. XD

AAAAAHHH!! Darn you for coming up with the idea first. ^^

We went out for Sunday lunch, as we do every week. And then Mom went shopping around her jewelry/bead places, and I tagged along. I was keeping my eye out for a purple-and-white bracelet like Kyo's, but I found something else just as good: Bracelets with teeny-tiny Chinese zodiac animals on each bead! They're so adorable. I couldn't find one that had all the animals, though, so I had to get two. ^^

Oh, I so want these. :D Mmm, snazzy Cowboy-Bebop-like packaging... Only why'd they have to have Fujiko on the cover of the third one, instead of Goemon? >:P
Though now I think about it, I wonder if my enjoyment of the Lupin III TV series would be the same without the Tagalog dubbing. ^^ It was one of the better local dubs, in my mind, though of course I haven't really seen the original series to compare. It was obvious that they added/changed a few jokes to be more local, and possibly toned down some of the bawdier stuff. And for some reason they seemed to put in this running gag about Detective Zenigata using random English phrases.

This week on Samurai Jack: silly Jack, that's sashimi, not sushi. You knew that, though, right?

That outfit Ayumi Hamasaki wore to the MTV AsiaAwards was rather cute. It was jeans with a top that looked like a kimono cut off at the waist.
God, but the scripting in this show is atrocious. And the presenter for Favorite Philippine Artist mangled Regine Velasquez's name (is "Velasquez" really so difficult to pronounce, that it should mutate into "VES-la-KWEZ"??? ><;;). Cirque du Soleil's performing, though, so I guess I shouldn't gripe.

Well, Icarus Falls is updated. Figured maybe it was worth mentioning, seeing as lately it seems like a semi-annual event. -_-;; I suppose when Hidden Agenda gets updated, I'll have to hire a frigging marching band...

This popped into my head the other day: Kimba the White Lion as a metaphor for the "White Man's Burden". No, think about it... he's a white lion. He swims across the ocean to reach Africa. When he gets there, he tries to "civilize" all the animals, getting them to do human things like have school and eat off plates and sing and stuff. And if any nasty animals like hippos or crocodiles or other lions disturb the peace, he beats the crap out of them. @_____@ Highly disturbing thought...
I would like to say that Kimba was a childhood icon of mine, and that I was obsessed with the show when I was little. Alas, that would be a lie. The truth is that I was obsessed with the show when I was in first year college. ^_^;;;;;;;; Though when I watched it, it went by Jungle Emperor Leo, which was the original title. It was showing then on a now-defunct local cable channel, JET TV, which aired nothing but Japanese programs dubbed into English.
Another former JET TV show I got hooked on was Eko Eko Azarak, which was a fairly cheesy live-action horror series. The main character was a girl/witch/creepy-magic-using-person of some sort, by the name of Misa Kuroi. She always wore a black sailor-style school uniform, which was the main inspiration for the girl's uniforms in Hidden Agenda. Damn, I miss that show. I miss that whole channel, actually. Though I would probably trade it in a second for WOWWOW...
...And that was a very random blog.

Silly anime music video idea of the moment: clips from Samurai Jack, set to "Heart of Sword", the Nth end theme from Rurouni Kenshin. ^o^ Anything would be better than that horrendous Samurai Jack theme... *shudder*
Another pretty good one, which Carlo mentioned to me the other day: clips from Utena, set to "Duel of the Fates" from Star Wars Ep 1. Hey, it kinda works. ^^
Of course, my dream music video project will always be Akazukin Chacha clips set to "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" by the Police. ^____^ After that, Utena clips of Mikage, Touga, and Akio set to "That Don't Impress Me Much" by Shania Twain... And then, clips from X TV, set to "I Am A Man Of Constant Sorrow" from the Oh Brother Where Art Thou? soundtrack. ^0^ Yesss... someday, when I have video editing equipment, and massively huge gobs of free time. ^^
And so, off to bed. Maybe.

Woo! Miya Takeishi's Snape page is updated! There are adorable little walking Snape icons! ^-^ And new doujinshi -- MUST BUY! Oh damn, I can't read what it says there. ;____;

Tonight's episode of Samurai Jack: Jack enters Star Wars cantina, drinks tea, confronts evil version of self, and goes Super Saiyan. Excellent. >:D

More stupid test results! I thought this one was at least a bit unique, though. ^^
Yes, I am the sort who hides under the covers and assumes that whatever that scary thing was, it will just go away. ^^;; At least I'm not the sort who stands screaming Home Alone style for eight seconds and then goes running off, still screaming, into the Dark Woods, wearing four-inch heels.
Today I dropped by that new manga store again and had a little Takaya Natsuki binge. ^^ I bought "Boku wa Utau to Kimi wa Warau Kara", which is one of those short story manga collections. The title story is so utterly adorable; it's like Fruits Basket meets KareKano, only warmer and fuzzier. ^^ I also bought "Tsubasa o Motsu Mono" vol. 1, which is some sort of quasi-futuristic fantasy story. The guy and girl vaguely remind me of the characters from Shun Shinkaden, for some reason.
Anyway, it's been a long since I've been able to make random impulse manga purchases; I've missed it. ^____^ I figure I'd better deluge that store with as much of my money as I can, so they don't go out of business and leave me manga-store-less.
And I did not even know that Nobuhiro Watsuki was doing another series after Rurounin Kenshin! This one apparently is known as "Gun Blaze West". From a 19th century samurai story to a 19th century cowboy story -- it doesn't seem like much of a leap at all, does it? ^___^

Dooood, the first two Series of Unfortunate Events books are available in Japanese?! O____O I shudder to think what an ordeal it must have been to translate those suckers. XD I'm trying to read what they translated the title as; is that "Yo nimo fuan na dekigoto"? Curse me and my nonexistant kanji skills! ><
...So is it too much to hope that I will be able to find pretty Japanese fanart for this series now? ;________;
Friday, February 8, 2002
Hmm... I really like this, for some reason.
Friday, February 8, 2002
I've just been to the new comic/manga store that opened up in our neighborhood. It was amazing. They actually had manga lined up on shelves and things, like in Kinokuniya, instead of behind counters like most manga specialty stores over here. They had a very good selection, and what they didn't have they said they could order. And the people who work there are apparently huge Fruits Basket fangirls. They had the complete set of the manga, with #8 having just come in today. And they had the plush dolls. Yuki was sold out, and they had two Shigures that had already been reserved.
God, I hope this place doesn't go out of business. It's almost too good to be true. ;____;

*rolls eyes at people who think that Harry Potter is so amazingly dark and adult and not-for-kids*
"Ooh! Look! There's blood and stuff! And violence! And people who die! That never ever happens in any sort of children's literature. And it's good, and we adults like it, therefore it must be for adults! Because everyone knows that all children's literature is boring crap about fluffy-wuffy bunnies."
One wonders if these people ever read books as children.
*rolls eyes once more, for good measure*
I'm blogging an awful lot tonight.

Oh yeah, I just remembered something. Earlier tonight, for some reason, I just started thinking some more about my Jem remake. If you have been stalking me for more than a year, you might remember some time back when I mentioned how I wish I could do a remake of that old cartoon, Jem and the Holograms. I said I would make it kind of like Utena, only with cheesy pop music instead of duels. It would be set in some sort of bizarre alternate future where everybody dresses in ghastly 80's fashion, and where all of society is based on pop music. Oh, and Jem dumps Rio in like the second episode, because Rio is a twit. :P Instead she'll find herself torn between Riot (the sexy lead singer guy of the blond Eurotrash band The Stingers), and... uh... Pizazz! Yes! Might as well throw in some lesbian undertones to attract the male viewers. XD And every episode would have lots of obnoxious song numbers and bright colors and Utena-ish imagery, and... oh God, that would rock. XDDDD I want to make that cartoon! Someday when I'm famous and obscenely wealthy, I'll buy the rights from... uh... Hasbro, or whoever owns Jem. And that will be my project.
Speaking of not being normal... :P
Friday, February 8, 2002
You mean I'm not really normal, I just think I'm normal because I'm surrounded by fellow weirdos? Oh. That makes sense. Poopy. :P

Went out to see The Others again, with Mom this time. She liked it, as I suspected she would. ^_^ Also saw a trailer for that movie, Rat Race. The movie itself doesn't look like much; but for crying out loud, it's got Rowan Atkinson, John Cleese, Cuba Gooding Jr., that Seinfeld guy, and about 10 billion other famous people I'm probably forgetting. O_____O
And today we got a new swivel-chair for the computer table. Whee, I love swivel-chairs! ^__^ This will certainly make it easier for me to use the computer and watch the TV behind me at the same time. ^^;;

Queen Elizabeth II has been queen for 50 years.
If I was queen, I would not wear bright green suits. I would wear long flowing black dresses and/or glittery robes and things.
And ALL would love me and DESPAIR.

OH CRAP! I just realized that I missed the last episode of Now And Then Here And There, AGAIN!!! I missed it when the series was showing on AXN before, and I never did find out what happened. Recently they started showing it again, and I thought I would finally see it. But I missed it! CRAP!
The reason I missed it was that I had to attend a special three-hour meeting of my Writing for Children class. It was actually a lot of fun, and we ended up talking about a lot of weird things like Sandman and His Dark Materials and Homoeroticism in Tolkien (I think everyone in the entire world now has read Cassandra Claire's LOTR parodies O__O). So at any rate, I'm glad I went. But still, I missed Now And Then Here And There, dammit! >___<
On a vaguely related note, it figures that just as I was getting into Farscape, AXN would take it off the air. Bleh. Oh well, it'll be back eventually. I guess.

Oh God this is precious! Snape looks like Morpheus! "Good Morning Professor Snake!" XD
Tuesday, February 5, 2002
Uhhhh... still more things to do... but right now, I'm just going to kick back and eat popcorn.
Oooh! The Loyola Lampoon came out today! The Loyola Lampoon is our school's parody newspaper which comes out once a year. It's funny. Well, it's funny if you go to our school. The major theme of this issue seems to be the current craze for game shows. There's a little quiz section in the back entitled "You, Atenean Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, Game KNB Maging Weakest Link?" XD AHAHAHAHAHAHA...ha. Okay fine, back to kicking back and eating popcorn.

Just came back from my Thesis Defense. I kicked ass.
Now to read a bunch of articles and write a one-page reflection paper by lunchtime.

I'm so happy! I got my Kyo (from Fruits Basket) plushie in the mail today. He's so surly! And his little felt bangs fall into his little painted eyes! *_____* I vacillate between wanting to snuggle him to bits and take him wherever I go, and wanting to keep him in the plastic bag because he's so pretty and shiny-new I'd hate for him to get dirty. @__@
KYON-KYOOOOOOON~!!!

Ooh! This test is kind of neat. ^_^ I kept getting ties between various results, though, so I just picked one. -_-;;
I... have... a style? O__O *incredulous*
Sunday, February 3, 2002
Oh, I forgot to talk about this before: a couple of weeks ago, I saw a big poster in our school for that movie "Bagong Buwan". Next to it, they had posted a brief summary of the film, which ended by saying that violence is not the answer blah blah blah, and that, "A just peace is better than a just war."
.......
.....Well, DUH.
Way to state the bloody frigging obvious, there. Of course a just peace is better than a just war. I mean, it's like saying "an adult elephant is bigger than an adult horse."
And of course, they just had to bastardize the classic line from Patlabor 2, which was "An unjust peace is better than a just war." Now that's a little more thought-provoking, I hope you agree. On that note, it might be cool to watch Patlabor 2 again.

Gah. God damn these Japanese artists and their... Japanese art. And their unbelievably detailed oekaki. That's all I have to say. X____x
Saturday, February 2, 2002
Tonight's episode of Samurai Jack v. good. The one where he has to train blindfolded to defeat those three archers on the tower. Though not sure why it was necessary for him to remove all his clothes to do so, especially in the middle of winter. Oh well, no complaints here.
Friday, February 1, 2002
I just saw another TV spot for Samurai Jack, which included the line: "...or is he Professor Utonium in disguise?" It seems Cartoon Network has finally come out and admitted it. XD
Friday, February 1, 2002
Lalalala... I thought I'd have lots of stuff to blog about, but apparently it's all fled screaming from my brain. So you'll have to settle for whatever I can come up with.
Right now behind me Carlo's playing this annoying game called Rez or something. The graphics are all colored grids and things, so it looks as if the designers forgot to finish the game before releasing it. And the pounding synthesizer disco beat music is giving me a headache. Why can't he go back to playing FFX? I liked that game. *pouts*
Next week is a pretty busy week for me. I have my thesis defense on Tuesday. This is a big deal, because I am lousy at any kind of oral presentation. If you thought I was incoherent in writing, wait until you hear me speak. -_-;; Aside from that, I have a few papers and long tests, and Philosophy oral exams and more papers the week after. Geh. X____x
And, a closing tidbit from Fnord: "MOST PEOPLE SURVEYED BELIEVE THAT TWEETY-BIRD SAVES TOM CLANCY AND MY MANUSCRIPT."
