Oooh... ONMYOUJI is gonna show at the Greenbelt theater in July! It's listed on this flier as "The Yin-Yang Master". ^o^ Wonder if I should make the effort to see that?

Ladies and gentlemen, say hello to my robot.

unity sui generis!

Hi, robot!

This oekaki robot looks basically the same as the one I drew in my notebook during class last Wednesday morning. I am really really really bad at drawing mecha of any sort, so I usually don't if I can help it. So it's not entirely clear why I was seized with the sudden urge to draw a cheesy-looking robot with Bender arms. Actually, I do know why. It's because at a certain point during the class the teacher mentioned a "something sui generis", and I remembered the term "unity sui generis" from Philosophy class last year. And I remembered that while reviewing for my Philo oral exams, in frustration I had doodled a rampaging killer robot yelling "UNITY SUI GENERIS!" And that got me thinking about robots, I guess...

And so I drew a robot. Hi, robot!

Am altogether too enthralled by new Star Trek Nemesis teaser. Apparently the movie focuses on a galactic conglomeration of evil bald guys. Next thing you know, they'll be telling Picard to "join us... it is your DES-TINYYYY." XD But the money shot is the one of Data taking a running jump through the vacuum of space. O__O

Just spent the afternoon at Saki's. Played with some of the special features on her Harry Potter DVD. Dammit, I want one! Now! The extended Potions scene kicks so much ass.

Agh, I don't believe this! A bee stung me on my butt! How exactly did I manage to sit down on a frigging bee INDOORS? Oww~ Hm... I don't have any allergies, do I? O___o

Anyway, Carlo and I saw Minority Report this afternoon. Pretty cool, despite a few plot holes which I suppose are only to be expected. Remember, kids: *Kotori voice* the future... is not... decided! ^_~

Oh yeah, and at the scene where he goes through the assembly line in the Lexus car...
Carlo: He's become Anderton Car!
Me: Mokushi kushimo shimoku kumoshi moshiku shikumo!
Hmm... I wonder if he comes with Cruise Control? *ducks rotten fruit*

What's with all the X cosplay recently?

  • The Ten no Ryu. The Sorata guy is kind of cute. O_O
  • The Chi no Ryu.
  • The hair scene!
  • A somewhat... different take on the hair scene.
  • Kamui and Fuuma.
  • Kotori: "See, Kamui? I can share ice cream too!" *wink wink* Kanoe: *leer*

Er, so anyway. The Chamber of Secrets trailer! I was led to believe that this trailer would contain a shot of Snape blasting Lockhart across the room. Instead we get a shot of Malfoy blasting Harry across the room. What a gip!

Is the actress who plays the Grey Lady dating the producer or something? How come we get so many gratuitous Grey Lady shots in the last movie and in this trailer, and nary even a mention of Peeves? Oh well, at least the Grey Lady is cool.

Two shots of Snape glowering, one of him running down the corridor. And the back of Tom Riddle's head! Wowwwww!!

So anyway. Harry has the POWERRRRRR!!!

Harry: Hi, I'm Harry. And this is my little friend, Hedwig.

    Hedwig: Eek eek!

Harry: Fabulous powers were revealed to me the day I held aloft my sword and said, (holds up sword) "By the Power of Hogwarts!!!"

(Harry's clothes turn into metal underwear as shiny colorful light effects dance in the background.)

Harry: I HAVE THE POWERRRRRRRRR!!!! (points sword at Hedwig. Hedwig transforms into a fearsome 10-foot tall owl monster with a saddle on her back.)

    Hedwig: RARRK RARRK RARRRRRRKK!!!

HA-RY AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE!

Lashtal, that is brilliant. ^_^ I clicked the button a few dozen times, but this is the one I got that I would most like to see as an actual series:

The main character is a bright female vet from the Meiji Era who has to battle against vampires with the unvaluable help of her magical weapons. Her friends are a reserved male angel, a masochistic samurai of alternating gender, a mysterious female doctor and a sadistic female deity. In the end, they overcome the vampires by destroying the Meiji Era.

They... DESTROY the freaking MEIJI ERA! Well, I'm sure that particular historical period wasn't doing anything anyway. XD

Well, for a movie with real live people running around acting like cartoon characters, Scooby Doo is pretty decent -- at times like a silly teen movie, and at times like an Adult Swim parody of the original show. 'Specially with Shaggy and the "Mary Jane" gags. ^^;; If you are reasonably undaunted by gratuitous soundtrack plugs, gratuitous CGI creatures, and gratuitous Velma cleavage(!), you might have fun. And If you do see it, don't let anyone spoil you about the villain. ^_^

Back early now from my other class, Dream in Writing. As you can probably guess, it's a class about writing scripts for Sandman! Ha! Ha ha! Ha... no, not really. We have to read a lot of Jung and stuff.

And then after lunch, Carlo and I will hopefully be able to go see Scooby Doo. Around here we probably won't get the Chamber of Secrets trailer attached to it (damn); but I want to see it anyway. I wanna see if Velma says "jinkies" at any point. And Rowan Atkinson plays a character named "Mondavarious", for crying out loud! That I have got to see.

I've got a brilliant new idea for a story, though. It'll be like that movie Frequency, only with a weblog instead of a HAM radio. I swear it'll make a billion dollars. If any rat bastard Hollywood sleazebag steals my idea, I'll sue!

Yesterday was Dad's first death anniversary. We had the family over to the house and served hot dogs and spaghetti and things. Later in the afternoon we visited the cemetary and left small pot plants on Dad's grave, and the graves of Mom's father and grandparents. Not a bad day; though I suppose there are better ways to spend Father's Day.

I am typing this on the other computer, since we're currently defragmenting the hard drive of our main computer. It's taking a lot longer than anticipated. It has been going at it since last night, and at this point is still only 32% done. @____@

    I dropped by Ateneo earlier to pick up a transcript. All the little college students were there with their little backpacks and sitting on the little benches and buying food at the cafeteria. Damn, it's all so familiar! I want to go back to Ateneo! I don't want to go to U.P.! The buildings are all far apart and I don't know where any of the bathrooms are! ;____;

My first class starts tomorrow. Isn't that a dismal thought? I'm going to classes again. Whatever happened to "school's out for ever"? Oh well, must think positive. Hot dawg! I'm gawn git me some ejuhmacation!

Well, I can't do anything at this computer. I might as well go read the two volumes of Toraware no Mi no Ue I just bought, and maybe draw some more Hidden Agenda pages.

    Made a trip to the comic/manga store today! I'd been wanting to go for weeks now; you'd think the place wasn't just down the street. -_-;;

Anyway, I bought Culture Crash #8, the first issue of some local self-published (read: laser printer and staples) comic called "Armor Troopers", the first volume of "Toraware no Mi no Ue", and one of those nifty little collectible Bone figures. I'd been wanting to get another one ever since I got Fone Bone on my last trip to the store. I was hoping to get Phoney Bone or a Rat Creature, or at least not another Fone Bone. Well, it turned out to be Lucius Down. Though I was a bit disappointed not to get a Rat Creature, he is a very impressive figure; very detailed, and much taller than the Fone Bone. And he stands up on his own! Damn, now I want another one. @___@

Anyway. Toraware no Mi no Ue is looking to be a new addition to my sizeable list of favorite manga! It's really quite a cute story (though how come so far I keep thinking of it as a shoujo-y no-monsters version of 3x3 Eyes? @_@). And the art is PRETTY. I picked it up on the recommendation of the girl in the store. Now I have to buy the other volumes! Quickly, before they sell out! Damn that store for being closed on Sundays! DAMNNNNN!!!

Last night I was flipping channels and saw something on the Disney Channel which I figured could only be Watership Down. It was an animated movie about rabbits, and the only thing I really knew about Watership Down was that it's a book/animated movie about rabbits. So I watched the last twenty minutes or so of the movie. It was quite interesting, and terribly gory too. O_o One can only imagine how violent the original book must have been!

Anyway, as I was watching it, I thought "Hey, this really reminds me of that one book I read as a kid; only that one was foxes instead of rabbits." So today I went and hunted down my copy of the book in question -- Run With The Wind, by Tom McCaughren -- and read the description on the back. And right there was a blurb from the Irish Times calling it "the Watership Down of the fox world". ^__^ Well, you gotta laugh.

I'm rereading the book now. I must have read it three or four times as a kid; I remember the plot and details very clearly. I guess I'd be interested in reading Watership Down as well; or at very least, seeing the rest of that movie.

Have just returned home from what seems to have been the final leg of the never-ending UP registration process. Stopped on the way home to buy a flag to hang on our front gate (as Independence Day is tomorrow), and to get myself a Green Tea Frappucino from Starbucks. Did you know that drinking a Green Tea Frappucino turns your spit green? And according to Carlo, it turns your toungue green as well.

Yesterday I was in the UP College of Arts and Letters Graduate Studies Office, waiting for my form thingy to be assessed. There was a little boy of maybe 4 or 5 years running around the office, getting into things and being precocious. His mother, one of the secretaries, was telling him to knock it off or she'd call the security guard. She then picked up the phone receiver and said "Hello, guard? May makulit na bata dito. Pwede bang hulihin mo siya at ipakulong?" ("Hello, guard? There's a bratty kid here. Could you come and arrest him?") The kid, meanwhile, was very busy ignoring her. I found it all terribly amusing.

Elfwood's slightly esoteric rules state that any art that includes modern elements (i.e. not "high fantasy") is not allowed in the Fantasy Art section, but may be placed in the Sci-Fi Art section. Which is weird, but whatever; it's their site. The rules also clearly state that art based on books are allowed in either the Fantasy or Sci-Fi Art sections. So I had been wondering for a while now what exactly their justification was for shunting all of the Harry Potter art into the Fanart section. Was it because Harry Potter was no longer just a book, but had been adapted into a very succesful movie? Well, in that case, how come Lord of the Rings art was still cheerfully marching along into the Fantasy Art section?

Well, now I get an e-mail back telling me the following: "Note that book illustrations are okay IF they are not from Harry Potter. (And that's because Harry Potter is too modern to be fantasy and not scifi eoungh to be scifi, and it's so popular."

......Okay, so basically they're specifically discriminating against Harry Potter because it's popular.

    .............

...Well, whatever. I feel bad getting on their case because the Elfwood moderators obviously have a HUGE amount of work on their hands, and overall they run a quality site. But still. I have to say what I think about this, and I think it stinks.

15? That old? I thought it would be 10. XD

Aheheh... he DOES seem a bit Gollumish, now that you mention it... ^^;; I don't really mind the house-elves, or the Ewoks or the Gungans for that matter; it seems I have a very high tolerance for innocuous little comic relief characters. (Just as an example: my favorite Thundercats character was when I was a kid? That's right, it was... Snarf. -__-;;;)

I just went to visit the rosycheeks Harry Potter page, because she's the only artist I know of who can actually draw a really cute Dobby (verging on the bishounen Dobby o__@), and I wanted to purge myself of the image of Nightmare Dobby. I doubt I'll be the first or the last to say this, but DAMN. Dobby is SCARY. That has to be the most horrific-looking movie creature I have ever laid eyes on. I'll be having nightmares for months after Chamber of Secrets comes out. X____x

And Riff has always been doing the trenchcoat-and-shades thing, but nowadays he's looking more and more like a rejected castmember from The Matrix. Not that it doesn't look good on him... (I need not mention that the links lead to SPOILERS! for Sluggy Freelance, so uh... yeah.)

Okay, apparently this guy is set to play Captain Nemo in the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen movie. With just this one picture to go on, I'd say he looks pretty good for the part. And he's actually Indian! But the question is... can he act the part? Can he deliver lines like "to play with Nemo is to play games with DESTRUCTION" and still look menacing while wearing a big blue turban and a belt buckle with a big letter "N" on it? XD And he's probably a whole lot younger than the comic's Nemo is supposed to be. I don't see why the people making the movie were all concerned about adding young characters to the cast, if they were going to young-ify oldies like Nemo.

Yes, in case you haven't guessed by now, this is a rambling LOEG-related blog entry. And this is a review of a newer draft of the LOEG movie script, as opposed to the older review of the older script, which I reacted to with such horror a while back. And remember just a few days ago when I said that Sean Connery seemed too cool to play Allan Quatermain? Well, apparently they cool-ified Quatermain's character for the movie. Aww, no more junkie Quatermain. ^^;;; To me, part of the appeal of the character in the comic was that even though he was such a loser, you could catch glimpses of the cool heroic guy he used to be. You could also see that he was really making an effort to better himself.

Annnnd, the movie's Invisible Man is now apparently... uh, a "gentleman thief named Rodney Skinner". Rather than a homicidal psychopath/snarky bastard named Hawley Griffin. Well, it was inevitable that substantial changes would be made to his character (to keep the rating down ^^;;), so I suppose it's not really a big deal that they change his name and occupation as well. But still... "Rodney Skinner"? It sorta defeats the purpose of having a team made up of pre-existing literary characters.

Dorian Gray with Wolverine-like healing powers... actually sounds kinda cool. ^^;;;;; But what I'm wondering is why they had to add more characters to the cast, when the whole problem with "team" movies in the first place is giving each character ample screen time? @___@ That's why they didn't have Gambit, Beast, Psylocke, Nightcrawler, et. al. in the X-Men movie, and why Storm had only two lines (bad ones).

At any rate. The settings and stuff sound pretty neat, and a lot better than the earlier script draft. I guess my main gripe with the script described in this review is Mina Murray being relegated to the role of token chick/love interest. >________< Part of what made the comic so interesting was that the "Extraordinary Gentlemen" were led by a woman. Part of what made Mina herself so cool was that she didn't have any special vampire abilities; her only superpower was that she didn't take crap from anyone.

And why does she have to end up with Tom Sawyer, for crying out loud? If in the comic she could have chemistry with Loser!Quatermain, how on Earth could she be able to resist SeanConnery!Quatermain??? ^o^

Well, there you go. How did you like my latest rambling LOEG blog entry? I'm practicing for the LOEG website I have in the works. ^_______^ If all goes well, perhaps I will confine my incoherent LOEG rants to that site, and Mr. and Mrs. Average Blog Reader will be spared my blather about things they don't give a poop about.
