Wow, Two Guys Sitting On A Sofa Holding Game Controllers seems to be the most engrossing webcomic strip ever. I know I've been sitting here pressing "reload" for the past couple of hours.

This morning Blue was found in my room, munching on poop she had snatched from the cats' litter box. Our brilliant dog, ladies and gentlemen. >__<

And for this evening I had been rather looking forward to watching that new Amazing Race. Unfortunately, I had to go instead with Mom to watch a performance put on by some schoolkids who'd been to a Repertory theatre workshop. Cue my silent scream here. Okay, so it wasn't actually that bad. I winced a bit at the Disney theme medley, but I was particularly amused by the tiny ponytailed girl who sang "Part of That World" with what appeared to be a moderate case of laryngitis. ^^

And I was still able to catch most of The Amazing Race, thanks to AXN's wonderful practice of replaying primetime shows after midnight. I think the little "captions" for the teams in these shows are getting weirder and weirder. Some of them, rather than describing the relationship between the partners, just give their occupation: like those guys who are "air traffic controllers". So what, are they connected by some deep soul bond that exists between all air traffic controllers? Some other captions describe the relationship in just a little too much detail -- like those two who are "dating for 12 years/virgins". Do we really need to read that every single time your names appear on the screen? I suppose the best overall would be the ones which give both the relationship and the occupation, like those guys who are "best friends/clowns". Although, if they're evil clowns, they should mention that too, just to be fair.

Tee hee. Joss Whedon likes Harry Potter. XD

And here is another instance of combining two of my favorite things: cute kitties and Engrish. Finally, you can disguise your cat as some other kind of animal, or even as a Japanese schoolgirl! Read the testimonials of satisfied cat customers: "I am a frog" and "Don't you think I'm sexy?" Yes indeed, it is very dear.

Still raining like the dickens, if in fact in rains continuously for days at a time in the dickens. It rained so much yesterday that the comic store closed before Carlo and I could get there -- cuuuuurrrrrses! So we visited my friend Aiee's brother's new store, which is in the same building. The store sells cutesy merchandise emblazoned with adorable and ineffably bizarre Japanese mascot characters -- things like a gangster tomato, a family of cheese, and a neurotic-looking piece of burned bread. What is it with the Japanese and anthropomorphic food?

Also in the same building as the comic store and the cute surreal store is a chintzy little anime merchandise "store", which is really just a glass counter in the back of a computer gaming place. They were having a going-out-of-business sale, so I dropped by, not expecting to find anything particularly tantalizing. And there in the corner -- beneath the homemade Slam Dunk lami-cards and the random years-old issues of Animedia -- was a Goemon plushie. A FREAKING GOEMON ISHIKAWA PLUSHIE. *___* However, the cruel fates had chosen my own birthday to mock me: the person who owned the glass counter store was not in that day, because of all the rain. Cuuuurrrrrrses!

So then we went out to dinner at California Pizza Kitchen. And I returned to that building the following day (today) to purchase Goemon, and somebody was actually there to sell him to me. (The comic store was still closed, though.) I now have a somewhat shabby-looking plush Goemon glaring down at me from the top of my monitor. I love him! ^.^ Now all I need is a little cardboard Zantetsuken for him to hold.

And, on a completely unrelated note, I hereby declare this the wittiest Onion "What Do You Think" section ever.

Today has been one of those lovely dark days where it was raining when you got to bed and it's raining when you get up and it rains pretty much nonstop all the rest of the time. The kind of day that makes me almost wish I was back in grade school or high school so that classes would be cancelled and I could get a holiday. ^^;;;

Speaking of which, I can't believe summer is almost over. >__< Where the hell did it go? Our trip to the States was cancelled on account of SARS, so I thought we'd have all this extra time to do stuff. I had such plans! I was going to become a mighty pirate, build a kite out of squirrels, and then fly it to the moon. And here now I haven't done any of those things. Neither have I read any of the books I was going to read (well, I did finally start on Golden Compass and finish King Solomon's Mines). And I'd hoped to have the first chapter of that comic done before school started, but at the rate I'm going it's not looking likely. At this point I could segue into a mention of how I turn twenty-two in a couple of hours, and how a person's life is like a single day -- shorter than you expect, and you never accomplish all the things you thought you would -- but that would be all depressing and The Hours-ish.

Instead I shall segue into a ramble about that comic, which has been updated once again today (or at least it will be, if I can get this frelling FTP to work ><). So far I've managed to eke out two pages a week on average; but each page takes me so long to finish, and they don't even come out as nice-looking as a lot of other webcomics I could name. It's not just that I procrastinate, although I do -- a lot. But even when I actually sit down to work on the thing, a great deal of my time is spent just staring at the paper. I guess drawing a comic is still kind of an intimidating venture for me. Hopefully once I get into the swing of it I'll be able to work faster. I really, really hope I don't have to cut it down to one page a week once school starts. School! Agh! We need more rainy days!

Oh wow, that was fun! I just had a bunch of my old friends over for lunch, on account of it being my birthday (next week). We hadn't gotten together like that since... well, my last birthday, actually. Ah, good times.

And last Tuesday Carlo, Mom and I went out to see The Hours, which is finally out here at just that opportune period when everybody is busy seeing Matrix Reloaded. ^^;;; Anyway, it was an interesting film that I liked but didn't entirely 'get'; one of those things that manages to be depressing and sort of not depressing at the same time. Nicole Kidman is cool.

Yes, I am back from THE BEACH!!! ^-^ We swam, sat around, read, ate yummy food and drank cold drinks, collected shells, played with friendly beach-going cats, and built a sandcastle IMPREGNABLE FORTRESS which shall stand for a thousand years! Unfortunately there weren't any cute little jellyfish like there were last time; but in the late afternoons I could pick up scores of tiny hermit crabs and watch them crawl around on my hand, before putting them back to go about their hermit crab business. Lovely as it all was, though, by Sunday morning I was missing my TV and internet and airconditioner, and was happy to head home. I guess I'm really an indoorsy city slicker at heart. ^^;;;

I now have a new cellphone with nifty features like not dying every time I try to make a call. Hurray! Also, I updated that comic today. Ce-le-brate good times, come AWN~!

Watched Matrix Reloaded earlier. Some really shockingly dull and mind-numbingly awful parts in the first half, with some rather nifty parts in the second half. The evil French computer program and the jealous French computer program were cool in a retarded kind of way. Yet another case of the computer programs having more personality than the real humans. And hey 'Link', say hi to Zelda for me. *snicker*

And in a couple of hours we will be off to THE BEACH!!! No sleep for me, wheee! We shall be back on Sunday.

Today (yesterday, but today for me since I'm still awake) was Mom's birthday. In the afternoon we went to Mom's office where much food and drink and icecream was being served. And then Mom and Carlo and I went to the mall and bought goggles with graded lenses so we can wear them and not be effectively blind when we go to THE BEACH!!! later this week. And then we had dinner at Chili's with family and then Carlo and I went with our cousins and watched X-Men 2. Again. Seeing a movie for the second time is always nice, because you know which parts are the ones to look forward to, and which parts would be good interludes during which to run for the bathroom. And, we bought tickets to watch Matrix Reloaded on Thursday. YAY. ^-^

Then when we got home I flipped through our old trade paperbacks of Dark Phoenix Saga and From The Ashes. And I was reminded of one of reasons I don't read X-Men comics anymore: the writing style is just so damned FUNNY. Oh, it's certainly not bad; just that it's so weird reading them, when one is used to manga and things which are generally very sparing with dialogue. In those old X-Men comics, every single panel is crammed with dialogue, internal monologue, and narration. Colossus can't just be punching somebody; he has to deliver about two paragraphs of lines explaining why and how he's doing so, and reminding you that he's all made of metal because that's his mutant power. -__-;; The more modern X-Men stuff I read back in high school was somewhat less so. But still, as I recall, an awful lot of issues began with lines like, "For Scott Summers, the mutant known as Cyclops, blessed -- and cursed -- since puberty with the ability to shoot powerful blasts of energy from his eyes, life has never been simple; even when sitting on the toilet." Okay, so they never actually have toilets in the comics, but you get my point. ^^;;;

Anyway. Forget that. We are going to THE BEACH!!! this Friday, and I am excited! I haven't been to any sort of beach in years and years and years! And walking on that beach in Australia last year doesn't count, since it was cold and windy and there was no swimming or picnicking or building of sandcastles involved. Hopefully all three will come into play this weekend, as well as collecting of seashells and catching (and releasing!) of jellyfish.

And, on a vaguely sea-related note, here is a transcript of a Saturday Night Live sketch in which Kelsey Gramer plays Captain Nemo and explains why "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" is a rather misleading title. Such useful information was never brought up in LoEG.

*watches Tuck Everlasting* ...it stinks. ARGH. Why did they make it a cheesy romance? Why did they make Miles such an asshole? Why did they leave out the toad? The fact that the toad would live forever instead of her was my favorite part of the book! Garrr, why, why... T_____T

Fridays after lunch with my Lola, I usually plunk myself down for a nice nap. Today, however, I sped off to our friendly neighborhood comic store to pick up LoEG#5. As I've mentioned, with previous 2nd volume issues there's always been at least one scene that made me temporarily too scared to continue reading. With this issue, I was too scared to even start reading the thing. But once I worked up the courage to open it, I pretty much read straight through.

(Skip next paragraph to avoid LoEG#5 spoilers and gratuitous babble)

Gah. Well, in the Invisible Man novel, I kinda felt sorry for Griffin when he met his sticky end; and I wound up feeling sorry for him here too. X___x The freakish animal characters were as delightfully wrong as I'd hoped (creepy Mr. Toad in his little motor-car, AAAAHHH!!!), though it would have killed me even more to see Pooh or Paddington there along with Rupert. Best line ever: "You are the shit of the world! I shall kill you now!" I know Nemo's fluent in a bunch of languages, but I didn't realize he knew how to speak Engrish. XD Speaking of which, the Asian Almanac part disappointed me by having not so much as a fleeting allusion to Godzilla; though I guess if you really stretch it, Laputa and the Monkey King could be considered anime references. XD I think Mr. Moore broke even Jess "the annotation guy" Nevins' brain with the obscurity of these references in this issue.

Anyway. My League site should be updated sometime tonight, I guess.

This Saturday Carlo is planning to have friends over to watch DVDs. Apparently it's to be Tuck Everlasting followed by Battle Royale, which should make for an interesting double feature to say the least. @___@;;;

Actually, it just occured to me that there would be great potential in a Battle Royale/Clue crossover. You get Mrs. Peacock, Miss Scarlet, Miss White, Mr. Green, Professor Plum, and Colonel Mustard. Between them, you distribute the knife, the rope, the wrench, the pipe, the candlestick, and the revolver. Then you lock them all up inside a huge mansion and have them all kill each other, and the last one alive at the end is the winner. Now there's a board game I'd want to play!

Annnnd the new League movie trailer is up, but of course you wouldn't expect me to mention anything about that. They're really milking Connery for all he's worth, aren't they? Why don't they just call the movie, "The Adventures of Henry Jones Sr. and A Bunch of Characters You Won't Recognize"? 9__9 Invisible Man looks cool, Hyde looks icky, the Nautilus looks pretty nifty but decidedly un-squid-like. I've decided that my favorite characters in this movie are going to be Nemo and Jekyll; because wasn't Jekyll so cute in that part where he goes, "Dr. Jekyll at your service, and I'm certainly not a Victorian Hulk rip-off, what are you talking about!"

Funnily enough, I did spot a couple of things that seemed like blatant nods to the comic fans. One was the money shot of the Nautilus coming out of the water, which seems to be the equivalent of that scene from the first issue. Also, for a brief moment, the iconic "hands" shot! Not as cool as the one on the comic covers, but still. I guess I'm moderately excited for the movie. If I keep reminding myself that it's a different animal from the comics, it still has the potential to be a good popcorn flick.

Mom is up in Tagaytay for a couple of days. So she is not here to put Blue to bed (in the bathroom) at the usual hour, and Blue is hanging out here in the computer room where it's airconditioned.

I was reading the latest installment of Sparkling Generation Valkyrie Yuuki, and naturally "Flight of the Valkyries" started playing in my head. So I started singing aloud, "Tan tanna TAN tan, tan tanna TAN tan, tan tanna TANNN tun tan tananan!" And Blue, who was sleeping on the floor, looked up at me.

"Sorry," I said, and she went back to sleep.

Free Comic Book Day is so cool! Our friendly neighborhood store had a better selection of free thingies than they did last year, I think. I ended up with *counts* about eleven comics all in all. ^___^ Haven't even finished reading them yet.

And this afternoon Mom and I tried to take the dogs walking. Pichu loved it, but that lazy brat Blue just would not walk no matter how hard you tugged at the leash. We had to carry her most of the way. And I lost the towel I brought along, which was part of my favorite towel set. Gah. >___<

And in other news, Disney is making Rapunzel CGI? WTF? Number one, all their big-name classic fairy tale movies have been traditional 2D animation. Making traditional animated films based on fairy tales with female protagonists is what Disney is FAMOUS for, dammit! And what exactly about Rapunzel lends itself to being animated CGI? Couldn't they at least go half-and-half like with Treasure Planet? >____<

Number two, there already is a CGI-animated Rapunzel movie. It's the one where Barbie plays the part of Rapunzel, and she has a talking purple dragon friend and a magic paintbrush or something. And it sucks.

Number three, Rapunzel is basically about a naive sheltered girl who gets knocked up by some sleazy playboy and then thrown out of her home by her really strict guardian, and subsequently goes on to be a single teen mother. How are they going to modify the story to make it a suitably wholesome, action-packed and marketable modern Disney film? XD Rapunzel is kind of a sedentary story -- the whole point is that she's stuck in the tower and can't get out. Well, they made it work with Beauty and the Beast, which is pretty much a story about two people having dinner over and over again. Probably they can squeeze some action out of the bit where the prince is blind and travelling the world searching for Rapunzel. Unless they change that part.

Mom mentioned that a lot of people didn't come to work today because it was a sandwich day between Labor Day and the weekend. It occurred to me at that moment that there ought to be a real holiday called Sandwich Day. It would be the day everyone is allowed to stay home and make themselves a sandwich. Man, I could really go for a sandwich. I ought to start celebrating Sandwich Day every year on May 2; or maybe just on every day that comes between a holiday and a weekend.

Due to Blue's somewhat improved odor after my mom gave her a bath this morning, I am no longer justified in calling her a stinky puppy. (Blue, that is. Not my mom. ^^;;;;; )

O______O at list of discussion topics for Harry Potter con Nimbus 2003. And, WOOHOO! at Quidditch World Cup video game.

And RARRR!!! at Preview pages for the next issue of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Hyde, if you die before Griffin I swear I'll kill you. Or maybe I'll just fake your death in a barely-explained manner so you can disappear and resurface years later as one of the bonus characters in a future installment of the Tekken series. (Hmm, I don't think even I understood that in-joke.) Beginning with issue 2, every issue in this second LoEG series has had a point at which I had to stop and put down the comic for about ten minutes, because I was literally too excited/terrified/shocked to read on. I wonder what it'll be this time.

Just came home from watching X-Men 2, and quite liked it.

Spoilers will follow.

*spoilers for X-Men 2*

*no, seriously, especially the last paragraph. Oh hell, I'll just black it out. Click and highlight to read the text below*

Favorite characters in this movie were Magneto, Wolverine, and Nightcrawler (BAMF! ^-^) Hee hee. Magneto was so delightfully catty. In the comics he always seemed a pretty straight-laced and serious kind of villain; and in the first movie, he had to be Mister Menacing Main Villain, so he couldn't have TOO much fun. But here he gets to be the snarky entertaining villain. "*snicker snicker* We love what you've done with your HAIR." He and Mystique were quite the pair of bitches. XD

Bugs me, though, that they go to all the trouble of giving Nightcrawler and Mystique the same shade of blue skin and yellow eyes, and have them meet each other, and completely fail to even allude to the fact that she's his freaking mother. >____<

And all the Phoenix-foreshadowing stuff with Jean Grey was a pleasant shock. Even more shocking that they actually went all the way and killed her off, thus committing themselves to making the next movie Dark Phoenix Saga. Or some version of Dark Phoenix Saga that doesn't involve omnipotent cosmic beings and magic space crystals and alien empires; because in the context of the world set up in these movies, that would be very weird. @__@ Hopefully when Jean goes all "CHILD OF LIGHT AND DARKNESS BWAHAHAHA" she'll lose that dorky Selphie hairdo.

A: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a cool steampunk-ish comic series by Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill which has several prominent literary characters banding together to form a Victorian-era superhero team.
