Found it. It's called "Outland", apparently.
Y'know, I'm really not sure if Sean Connery should be playing Allan Quatermain in the LOEG movie. I mean, he's just too cool. All he has to do is open his mouth and you immediately think "wowwwww". *__* Whereas Quatermain's supposed to be a burned-out loser. Ah well, either way it'd be interesting to see.

Oh my God! There's some old sci-fi Aliens-looking movie on HBO, starring a rather young Sean Connery! O___O I wasn't sure at first if it was him or not, as I'm quite terrible at recognizing actors. But then he spoke, and I knew without a doubt that it was him. ^__^ I'm gonna try and look this up on IMDB right now.
What type of Bishounen are you? Find out at artificial-soul.net by Rin.
WOOHOO! I'm going to take my little cheap-ass wooden sword -- or my brother's chintzy wushu-style sword, the Rusty Destiny -- and I'm going to right wrongs and triumph over evil! ^___^

And what better way to comemorate my birthday than with one of the (IMHO) saddest and most tear-jerking scenes in A Series of Unfortunate Events? I was doodling late last night (or early this morning), and came up with a little doodle of Klaus from that one scene in The Vile Village. I took a look at it and thought, "Hey, this is birthday-related, I should fix this up in time for my birthday." ^_^;; So I scanned it, and messed around in Painter and Photoshop for a while. Here is the result. Teensy spoiler for Book the Seventh of the series; please view at your own discretion. ^_^
Needless to say, unlike Klaus-kun, I have had a pretty enjoyable day and weekend all around. ^____^

Today Carlo took me to see Spider-Man again (finally!) J. Jonah Jameson is so cool. In the Toys R Us in Hong Kong, they only had two Spider-Man action figures left: J. Jonah Jameson (with desk-banging action!) and Norman Osborn, complete with the chair with the Goblin mask hanging on it. I wish we had gotten those figures. ^o^
Before the movie, I got one of those Green Tea Frappucinos that are new now at Starbucks. I love green tea, so naturally I was quite excited about it. The first few sips were yummy; but after a while the syrupy-sweet taste they put in it just got sickening. Green tea just should not be that sweet. >__< If ever I get that drink again, it'll be the smallest size.
And on the way home, we stopped at the comic store and I reserved League of Extraordinary Gentlemen vol. 2 #1. They didn't have much new or interesting stuff, except for these adorable little Bone collectible figure thingies! They come in little sealed boxes, so you don't know which one you've got until you buy it; and they were priced pretty cheap for around here, too! This, of course, is so people will become addicted and buy dozens of the little buggers in order to collect all 6 figures, or amass one's own army of rat creatures. I bought one! It turned out to be Fone Bone. He's got his own little stand and everything. He's on top of my scanner right now. Butt-Ugly Snape Action Figure is glaring at him.

*looks at time* Hmm... well, I guess I'm officially 21. Yay, I'm old enough to purchase liquor in the U.S.! Except I don't live in the U.S. and I don't like to drink. ^^;; Oh well, maybe I'll go to Las Vegas sometime and gamble and purchase liquor without drinking it. Ah, the joys of adulthood.

Is it me, or am I no longer able to get reasonably smooth lines in oekaki? Compare the above, and this other recent oekaki, with older ones like this and this. I thought it might be our mouse, because we switched mouses for a while; except that the mouse I used for the last one is the same old mouse I used to oekaki before. So maybe it's just lack of practice. ^^;;;;

So Spirit is an animated movie? Why didn't anybody tell me? I was wondering what this horse movie was, and why everybody seemed to be so interested in it.
Oh well, I'll probably have to see it when it comes out here. It looks like the kind of movie that would have me crying at least once. I swear, in my old age I've become such a sentimental twit at the movies. Used to be that crying was reserved for moments like the death of Charlotte the spider, or when Atreyu's horse sunk into the swamp. But now I'm in danger of getting misty-eyed at any random moment when the music swells. My eternal shame will be that I got all sniffly at the end of Balto. Yes, Balto, the animated movie with the sled dogs. >____<
Hmm. On that topic, here are a few things that get me blubbering like a baby every time:

Whoops, that didn't last long. I have old friends coming over in the morning, and I didn't want them to think I was under the influence of hallucinogenic drugs. Better to have them think I'm dangerously violent. Hence, this new new wallpaper made from the Samurai Jack fanart I completed the other day.

No Need For Bushido! is a comedy webcomic with a cute samurai! Er, and that's all I have to say about that. ^^;;
Ha ha, I'm such a dork! Look at the dorky LOEG wallpaper I just made! I was aiming for something simple and classy, like the Samurai Jack wallpaper I had up for a couple of months; but that wasn't coming out so spectacularly. So, BAM! I go for ultra-campy instead. Poor Nemo is almost completely obscured by the icons though. And I think maybe it's not gaudy enough. I need to put a little picture of Marvin the Martian in there, or else the "Ak! Ak!" Martians from Mars Attacks! ^____^;;;

X updates.
*spoilers*
The moment I read that somebody dies in this month's Asuka, I was seized by a sudden irrational panic. Fearing for the lives of two of my favorite X characters, my brain kept repeating over and over "Please let it be Nataku, please let it be Nataku, please let it be Nataku..."
...and so now that it is Nataku, I feel kinda guilty. ^^;;; I didn't really want it to die, after all. It was an innocent, and just starting to be an interesting character, too. Well, better Nataku than Karen; though it may just be delaying the inevitable. After all, Karen and Aoki are still face-to-face with Fuuma the Impaler, and he's still in their kekkai.
So... I guess that's Dragons of Heaven: 7, Dragons of Earth: 5. Except for this weird thing where every time a DoE dies they're replaced with a DoH. You do realize what this means, don't you? It means it's now certain that Arashi's gonna defect to the other side, like in the TV series. >____<
O_______O ...I would never have made that connection by myself. But yes, by god! It is "revenge" for Fuuma's dad!

"You can't compel ants to do your bidding, Peter. You're not Ant Man." -- 11 failed lines for Aunt May.
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Vol. II issue 1 and issue 2. *_____* The descriptions don't say much that we didn't already know -- it's 1898, and the Martians are coming! -- but hey, at least we know the damn comics are still coming out. It looks like now they're going for the more standard superhero-ish Characters-Standing-Around-Looking-Cool kinds of covers, rather than the cutesy mock-Victorian covers of the first series. Not that this bothers me, because hey, lookie! Pretty picture! ^-^
Check out that second cover. Nemo looks in bad shape --much skinnier than before. Perhaps he caught ameobic dysentery from swimming in the Thames at the end of Vol. I. And Miss Murray looks much more wide-eyed than usual. Has that scarf of hers finally cut off all the oxygen from her mighty brain? Damn, I like her dress though. Is Quatermain cracking his knuckles because he's itching to kick some alien backside, or does he just not want Miss Murray to see his hands shaking from three days without opium? Is Hyde yelling at Griffin not to smoke in dry forests because it starts bloody great forest fires? WHO CAN SAY??? Oh God, I love this freaking comic! I want it to be out NOW! Well, I want no. 1 to be out first, and then this one! NOW! This, I COMMAND!!!

I haven't read Ronin, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if Samurai Jack is similar; the show is constantly making little homages to about a billion different movies, TV shows, comics, etc. I hear Episode XIX has a samurai with a baby cart a la Lone Wolf and Cub. ^_^ The Utena thing was most likely unintentional, though. But what else am I supposed to think when during a sword battle a beam of light comes down from the heavens to envelop Jack, his sword starts glowing, and then with one slash he defeats his heretofore undefeatable opponent? ^o^

We bought three big bottles of Kirin Milk Tea yesterday, and I'm steadily guzzling them down. Mm, tea. ^___^
This thing on Ragabash's blog is so screwed-up it's scary. (Click the link in the entry to see it.) What's scarier is that it's not just random movie posters slapped together with erroneous text; somebody actually took time and deliberately Photoshopped all those pictures together, and stuck Viggo Mortensen's head on God-knows-what-that-is, and changed the head on one of the statue things. Weeeeird! @___@ Wish we had found treasures like this while we were in Hong Kong; I guess we were hanging around too many legit video places like HMV. XD
The Powerpuff Girls were originally known as the Whoopass Girls?! O__o Craig McKraken also talks about the inspirations for the villains on the show, some of which never occured to me before, but seem blindingly obvious now. Like, why didn't I realize that Fuzzy Lumpkins looks like something out of Rainbow Brite, and of course Princess is Veruca Salt! ^o^ And it was clear to me from the beginning that He was The Devil, although I think they muddled that a bit later in the series by treating "Him" like a proper name rather a pronoun.
When I was in first year college, I wrote a term paper on the various portrayals of the Devil in religion, mythology, and media. (I called it "Sleeping With the Adversary: The Many Faces of Satan". I got an A! ^-^) If I were to redo that paper today, I could include a section on all the little Satans on Cartoon Network. First there was The Red Guy on Cow and Chicken; then Him on The Powerpuff Girls. And that red Devil-looking cat thing on Courage the Cowardly Dog. So many little cartoon Ultimate Evils! As a matter of fact, Cartoon Network is now second only to Harry Potter in teaching kids to worship Satan. XD

Samurai Jack Episode XVIII: Professor Frink from The Simpsons guest-stars. And wow! Jack gets possessed by the Power of Dios! XD Next episode, Duelist Jack revolutionizes the world.

Before we got into the car this morning, my mom reminded me to go to the bathroom before we left, pointing out that "It's not going to be Wee-Wee Country." I couldn't help but think, "I sure as hell hope not." No offense intended to any citizens of Wee-Wee Country, nor to their good Queen Urinia.
Anyway, we all went on a long drive to meet some relatives I've never met before, and look at some family property that's apparently in dispute. At several points it rained like heck, but I didn't get wet, so that was okay. And there were a few cute doggies involved. It was all pretty nice. What was not so nice was getting stuck in traffic on the way back and getting home at 9:30 PM. Well, at least it wasn't Wee-Wee Country.

Just came back from the midnight showing of Star Wars.
*spoilers*
Anakin is a huge prat. Or, as Master Yoda would say, "A huge prat young Anakin is." I can't believe that whiny little bitch grows up to be Darth Vader. I guess this is why supervillains never want you to see their awkward childhoods; because before they were cool and powerful and menacing, they were just annoying jerks. Amidala is still pretty cool, but I would have cause to question her taste in men.
Amidala: When I was a kid, we used to come here and blah blah blah...
I never really understood the fandom surrounding Baby Fett, but Daddy Fett was pretty cool. And Mace Windu was pretty cool while killing him.
Obi-Wan: "Fire at those Federation starships!"
Hurray for Ass-Kicking Yoda! The entire theater went wild at that scene. *__* And hurray for Flying R2-D2, although that is pretty scary. A flying R2-D2 would be completely unstoppable. He could take over the universe! Hm, perhaps an idea for Episode 7.
At any rate, a much more entertaining movie than Episode 1, with a few very annoying bits and a lot of very cool bits. And I find myself much more excited for the next movie than I was after Episode 1. Patience, my blue friend...
Tuesday, May 14, 2002
Well, Carlo didn't seem to like Metropolis much; but I thought it was pretty cool. Of course, I'm one of those weirdos who actually really likes Osamu Tezuka's character designs. I did feel that the movie was somewhat misrepresented, though. It's not some touching love story between Main Boy and Robot Girl (that main kid was pretty colorless, anyhow). I also don't see how people can call it a knock-off of Akira or Ghost in the Shell; it's nothing at all like Ghost in the Shell, and only vaguely reminiscent of Akira in brief flashes (probably because Katsuhiro Otomo was the writer!).
Anyway, yeah, it was a depressing story about robots. What else do you expect from Osamu Tezuka? XD Though I did feel bad for that one polite robot guy who got shot in the head; the one with the face like Giant Robo. :( Why? Why do the polite robot guys always get it in the end? WHY??
Enough of that now. It's time for some MINI-REVIEWS!
Cross Triangle (manga): This was pretty much a random purchase. The cover was pretty, it was an Asuka title, and I saw an ad for it in the Asuka magazine I purchased. It's apparently a one-volume, self-contained story. Thus in a lot of parts it seems like one of those OAVs where they rush the story terribly, and you say, "well, it's because they were trying to fit a 15-volume manga series into three half-hour episodes. It's pretty, but the story is explained much better in the manga". Only in this case, it actually is the manga. Uh... @__@
Anyway, it's about some girl named Kurusu who goes to some Catholic school, and she has two best friends named Kiraha (girl) and Oogami (guy). And she gets the impression that Oogami likes her and she kind of likes him too, except that she thinks that Kiraha is in probably love with him. And then there's some biseinen priest guy who turns out to be evil or something. And then suddenly for some reason Kurusu and Oogami have to fight demons or something, and then Kiraha the bestfriendgirl turns out to be Queen of the Demons or something. Oh yeah, and it turns out that the one she was in love with was Kurusu all along! What a shocker. And then, uh, there's some kind of fight, and they all live happily ever after, except that Oogami goes away to do some self-discovery crap, which makes me think that Kurusu will probably get tired of waiting for him and become a lesbian, because Kiraha does make a pretty badass black-clad katana-wielding villain chick. Although I would probably wait a while for Oogami, because he bears a striking resemblance to Van from Escaflowne. *__*
Er. In case it wasn't made clear, it's a fairly weird and silly story, but amusing nonetheless. The art is pretty, and that stupid cat with the bat wings is downright adorable.
Comic Master J (manga): I had never seen or heard of this series before in my life, but when I saw it in Asahiya I knew I had to pick up at least one volume. It's a testament to the fact that you can make cheesy overdramatic shounen action series about ANYTHING, be it basketball, cards, go, fishing, chinese cooking, or yes, drawing comics.
It's about this guy, Comic Master J. He has long white hair, and wears shades and a trenchcoat with pockets inside for a zillion different brushes and pens and things. And he's basically like Eat-Man, only instead of eating things and making giant guns out of his hands, he draws comics. Really fast. I may have to scan some pages of this thing eventually, just to prove that I'm not making the damn thing up. I kinda wish I had bought more volumes; there were about six that I saw there at Asahiya, and the future ones all had these dramatic/angsty-looking covers, of J posing with his billions of pens and facing off against some nasty-looking comic-drawing villains. XDDDDD
A Tale of Time City, by Diana Wynne Jones (book): I keep hearing great things about this author from various people (including no less than Neil Gaiman!). This was the first book of hers that I read (though I did get Howl's Moving Castle for Christmas, I haven't read it yet ^^;;). Just saw it on the children's shelf at Swindon's bookstore, and thought it looked interesting.
And, well, it was! All time-travel stories eventually end up making my head hurt, but this one was not quite as bad, as discrepancies could be explained with that whole Unstable Era thing (though that was still pretty weird). And best of all, it had a cool android character! Elio is like Data from Star Trek, only different! He likes cartoons and horror flicks and keeps a Frankenstein's Monster on his desk! And he will never ever get shot in the head like certain abovementioned polite robot guys, because he's made from organic parts and not really a robot! Wheeee! *____*
And now, since this entry has gone full circle to talking about robots again, I shall end it here.

Hm. Didn't pass the U.P. Fine Arts talent test. Didn't expect to, not really sure if I wanted to either.
At any rate, Hong Kong was quite fun. We've been there a couple of times before; the last time was about five years ago, just a few months before it was handed back over to China by the British. We stayed at the Hotel Renaissance Harbor View; and amazingly enough, we actually did have a room with an amazing harbor view. Outdoors, it was every bit as hot and humid as Manila; but indoors, all the shops, restaurants, and hotels had their airconditioning turned up all the way. So I was by turns steaming and freezing.
Basically, we went to stores and markets, rode the ferry, rode the subway (which is quite shiny, and remarkably easy to navigate compared to the Tokyo subway), had dinner with Mom's friends and colleagues, and so on. And of course, since not enough of my money had been spent on manga, we managed to find an Asahiya bookstore, where I bought the following:
And yes, Hong Kong does have Sprite and Chicken McNuggets. But much to Carlo's dismay, it did not have Starbucks that we were able to find (apart from the one in the airport, the not-yet-open one in Central Station, and a couple of people walking on the street with Frappucinos).
Thursday, May 9, 2002
Well, in about four hours we leave for the airport, to go to Hong Kong. So, uh, I really should get to bed pretty soon. ^^;; I'll be gone for five days, to shop, eat Chinese food, look for milk tea products, and see how just many cable channels Hong Kong shares with the Philippines. XD
Wednesday, May 8, 2002
So my Mom was here in the computer room last night, enjoying the airconditioner while watching the Sex and the City marathon on HBO. She left before the last episode, but I watched it. By the time that was done, it was about 2:30 AM. I decided to watch the first episode of .hack//sign, which we had finished downloading earlier.
It was... interesting. Apparently Shinji lost his memory after the whole End of Eva thing and has taken to playing online RPGs. XD And that non-stop music! It really is like a video game world. ^^
Anyway, when that was done, it was about 3:00, which is when I usually start winding down for bed. I decided to check my e-mail one last time before shutting down. E-mail comes, from Saki, letting me know that half of the revamped Icarus Falls pages which I had spent the entire afternoon working on weren't showing up properly in Internet Explorer. >____<
It's not as if I didn't check them in IE beforehand -- I did preview them, on my computer. But once they were uploaded, for some reason... >___________<
So anyway. Had to correct and reupload every single gallery page, all through an excruciatingly slow connection. It took me about an hour. >___________________<
Tuesday, May 7, 2002
Well, Icarus Falls is revamped and updated. Took frigging long enough, let me tell you.
Sunday, May 5, 2002
Saki has finally uploaded her comic! So you would do well to go read. ^_^
Also, I could spend hours at this page (just have, actually ^^): extensive notes on Harry Potter translations in China, Taiwan, Japan, and Vietnam. Some of the Chinese/Taiwanese translations made me burst out laughing. N.E.W.T.s as "Super Fatigue Bombing Wizard Tests"! XD
Saturday, May 4, 2002
Download Sealab 2021 sound clips! Or else... "I will slaughter them like a wolf among lambs! The seas will run red with the blood of my enemies!" XDDD
On that note... the original Sealab 2020. O_____o

Whatever Happened To Robot Jones?, a cartoon about a robot teenager, set in a retro-1980 future? I love it already! XD
Friday, May 3, 2002
This morning I had to get up obscenely early. Like 6 AM. I don't know how some people managed to get up so early ALL THE TIME. It's insane! Anyway, this was because I had to take the Talent Determination Test for Fine Arts at University of the Philippines (I'd sorta been thinking about taking arts for a while, or something). This was the test I'd been dreading all week... well, longer than that, actually. U.P. has produced many of the greatest painters and artists in the Philippines; and I just don't know if anything I do counts as "fine art".
Anyway. Took the dumb test. Don't really want to talk about it.
And afterwards, Carlo and I went out to see SPIDER-MAN! My goodness, that was a pretty darn cool movie. Too many good superhero movies being made! It defies all laws of probability.
Anyway. One thing they never explained, though, and which I was waiting to find out, was how the hell he got that costume. Are we supposed to believe he sewed it all himself, including all the little web patterns? Where did he find so much rubber, and those shiny eye things? But the scene where he comes out in his first ever "costume" is probably one of the most priceless bits in the movie. A number of precious funny bits, but on the whole it was kind of a depressing story, actually.
Also, it was quite remarkable how true-to-life J. Jonah Jameson looked. ^0^ It's amazing what you can do with CG nowadays.

*jaw drops*
Oh my God, YES!!!!!
July. That's way sooner than I ever believed was possible. *___* This makes me so happy, I can almost forget about all the stomach-turning newsbits on the same site about the LOEG movie. I know, I'm becoming one of those annoying ranty nit-picking otaku that I so hate; maybe because I'm the ONLY annoying ranty nit-picking otaku this series seems to have. ;____;
Wednesday, May 1, 2002
AAGH!! Damn it, will it never end? This switching of one word for a completely different word that happens to sound the same but is spelled differently! It's not "weary" as in tired, it's "wary" as in watchful/uneasy! It's not "rights" as in entitlements, it's "rites" as in ceremonies! And for the love of God, it's not "duck" tape, it's DUCT tape!!! >____<
And dammit. This webcomic I'm reading right now is really annoying. I mean, honestly! This is a product of the mindset that blood and quote-unquote "drama" and angst-ridden standing-in-the-rain scenes make a story deeper and more sophisticated. 9__9 And for crying out loud, if I wanted to slog through an extended Power Rangers illustrated fanfic, I would have... uh, searched for one on Google. Or something.
And dammit. I cut my thumbnail too short last night, and now it HURTS.
