"Gyah, that's it. Screw every last one of you. I'm going home and listening to Tori Amos." Kamui, X Handpuppet Theatre. ...Of course, you just *know* he's going to be listening to "Crucify".
Ah, X humor. One has to love it.

I woke up this morning with two songs running through my head. One was the battle music from Gladiator, which I had watched again on HBO the night before. The other was "I'm Gonna Kick Your Ass", as sung by Zorak on The Brak Show. @__@
And moving from brain-hurting to brain-boggling, Sir Derek Jacobi was in The Secret of Nimh? O___O I talked to Carlo about Derek Jacobi being Dumbledore, and he said he couldn't see it; but he agrees that Derek Jacobi would be cool as a professor or some other character. I think WB is contractually obliged to cast every single cool British actor for the Harry Potter flicks, so maybe we'll see Derek Jacobi in one of the future films. Just so long as they remember to get Anthony Hopkins for Mad-Eye Moody. *____*

Internet was out pretty much the whole day. Just got it back now. Not the most terrible of days, but not the best of ones either. It's starting to look a little better, though. My Umax scanner magically seems to be working again, so I've laid my poor old OpticPro scanner aside once more. Ah, OpticPro, you were a good and faithful scanner, stalwart and true; you were my first scanner, and you've served me well since second year high school. Whereas this upstart Umax (cursed be the name!) will probably sputter and die by the end of this year, like its predecessor did. By any standard, you are by far the superior scanner. But the fact remains that you are incredibly old, and your color scans come out all stained and discolored from rust or God knows what. It's not your fault. Farewell, old friend. *plays taps*

Carlo and I went to see The Others today. Creepy movie... and actually creepier in hindsight, in light of the twist in the end. Nicole Kidman looked nice. Actually, she looked a lot like Karen Kasumi with that hairdo. Heck, she could have been Karen Kasumi's grandmother or something, with the stern Catholic demeanor and conservative but stylish black dress. Er... riiiiight.
Damn. The music from last night's episode of Samurai Jack has been running through my head all day. You know, the really trippy music from the part where he's travelling through the desert with that green chick. Anyone know where I can download Samurai Jack music? Not the god-awful end theme; the background music and such.
And last night I was watching bits of Disney's Tarzan on the Disney channel, and Tarzan looked a bit like Samurai Jack. It's the mouth. And the chin. And the brow, I think. XD

Siiigh... I wish they had gotten Derek Jacobi instead of Richard Harris to be Dumbledore. *__* Though he's not terribly tall...
...I think I could deal with a short Dumbledore, if it was Derek Jacobi. ^^

Aheheh. Guess what this little dork has been puttering around with for the better part of last night and this afternoon?
Yup, I actually made my own stupid quiz thingy for the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. ^^ I was pretty shocked when I took it myself and got Miss Murray; I was certain I'd be Jekyll or someone. Not that I'm complaining, mind you. >:D
Anyway, I worked real hard and wasted lots of time on it, so go take the test and use the stupid little graphics! ^_^ And for the love of all that's holy, read The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, before they make a crappy movie out of it and you have to read my whining about something nobody else has ever heard of.
Saturday, January 26, 2002
Now watching some movie called "Max Knight". It's all about some guy called Max Knight, Ultra Spy. You know he's really ultra-cool and all, because he's not just a spy... he's an ULTRA SPY! And because he leaves shiny metal calling cards that say "Max Knight: Ultra Spy". Geez, this guy is so cool, he's like, cooler than... Keanu Reeves or something.
Damn. Now I have to continue watching this movie, if only to find out if his talking computer babe goes Sharon Apple on him. Must... kill...
In other news, Subaru Sumeragi is a poo-poo head. *raises hand* Who's with me?
...Well, he IS. He's a stupid, selfish, whiny, wimpy, selfish, self-centered, selfish, backstabbing, stupid, selfish... poo-poo. Also, he has bad breath. He does! Don't believe me? Well, show me one scene in the manga or anime which shows him brushing his teeth. Ha! There aren't any. He has bad breath. Also, he smells, because he doesn't bathe.
What a lazy weblogger I am. Only posting when there's some stupid quiz result to put up. Ah well. More later, maybe.

"World of S&M"??? O___o;; I actually remember Ikuhara mentioning that when we saw him at FanimeCon. Looks... interesting... I like the boy with the doll. ^__^
Making Samurai Jack into a live-action movie is just the sort of retarded idea that only a movie exec could come up with. (You know, the same sort of movie exec who decides that the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen should be led by Tom Sawyer... okay, better not get started on that again. -_-;;) But an integral part of the power and appeal of Samurai Jack is the animation and art style. If you take some actor and slap him in a kimono and have him wave a big square-ended sword around fighting CG bugs, it's just going to look... retarded.
I am mostly an optimist at heart. Maybe I should be more optimistic about movies like these. But I dunno. XP

So Kiki is a halfblood? Interesting. ^_^
Today there was another one of those annoying Luzon-wide blackouts. Thankfully it started in the early afternoon, and only lasted a few hours. The last couple of times this has happened, it's been chalked up to huge masses of jellyfish clogging the power plant drains, or something ridiculous like that. I guess we'll have to wait 'till tomorrow's headlines to see if the Killer Jellyfish Have Struck Again. XD
Got zero sleep last night, staying up to finish a story for Writing for Children class. Dozed on and off most of today, in and out of class. Still have work to do, and a long test tomorrow. Crap. X___x
But, having the computer on all night, I finally managed to download an episode of Fruits Basket! *__* It was episode 11. GOD, I LOVE KYON-CHAN'S VOICE. Tomokazu Seki! Kyaa! And, of course, Momiji-kins. *____* He's so cute and genki and girly! And for some reason, now more than ever, he reminds me of The Little Prince. O__o

Last night (or this morning :P) I had a passing strange dream. We were in Toys R Us, and they had all these League of Extraordinary Gentlemen dolls -- you know, the 10" Barbie-esque ones, like the LOTR dolls, only... not as ugly. :P I had this memory that I had gone there before, and they only had one LOEG doll: Miss Murray. I had decided at that time to hold off on buying her. But *this* time at Toys R Us, they had the dolls of all the other characters; all except for Miss Murray. My first thought was, "Cool! They have all the characters! I can get a complete set!" My second thought was, "Shit! I didn't buy Miss Murray, and now they're out of her!" I asked one of the employees, and they said that they were all sold out of Miss Murray and weren't getting any more. So I cursed myself, and made plans to scour eBay or whatever for her.
In the meantime, I bought the Captain Nemo doll. For some reason, he was dressed all in black. And it was one of those dolls where it talks if you press a button; only he had a Transylvanian accent, for some reason. @___@ I was gonna get the Quatermain doll too; but when I picked it up, I saw that it looked like they had just taken a female doll and slapped Quatermain's clothes on her. It even had boobs. @______@;;
That was the one dream. There was another one, which I don't really remember much of, except that Q was being really really nice to me. You know, Q from Star Trek. *That* Q. ^__^
Actually, we watched Francis Ford Coppola's version of Dracula for class the other day, so that's probably where I got Nemo's Transylvanian accent. ^^;; I hadn't seen the movie in a long time. I cracked up every time Keanu showed up on screen, struggling with his fake English accent. But Keanu cracks me up pretty much every time I see him. ^0^ Wynona Rider's Mina Murray in this movie is pretty different from LOEG's Mina Murray; but there was this one scene... the one where she met Gary Oldman Dracula on the street for the first time. She was wearing this doinky little hat, and this poofy green dress which made her arms look skinny, and she was all snappish and bitchy with Dracula, and she introduced herself as "Wilhelmina Murray". *___* Miss Murray~! Aah Mina-sama, my heroine! If only they made an entire movie with her like that, rather than the crap-fest the actual LOEG movie seems to be shaping up to be. T_______T

*watches X TV episode 12*
(spoilers)
.......
...Nokoru is... a bit... older... than I remember. He's also rather less blonde, and... quite a bit more mustache-y, too...
Ah, hell. Who are you, and what have you done with Nokoru Imonoyama? @___@
Well, it is rather shocking. I know the fans are going to be up in arms. I actually don't mind all that much, though... In fact... I think TV Rijichou is kind of cool, actually. ^^ He has Nokoru's dress sense and chivalrous nature, and makes dramatic helicopter entrances to boot. I can see it now... The Man with the Helicopter: a shrine to TV Rijichou. XDDDDD
Another shock: the merging of Cool Trench-Coated Kakyou with Long-Haired Kimono-Clad Wussy-Boy Kakyou, to form the creature known as Cool Long-Haired Trench-Coated Kakyou. :D I still think he looked best with short hair and no eyes, but that's just me. At least it won't be such a shock when Cool Kakyou becomes Weepy Girly Bishounen Kakyou.
And the biggest shock of all: Kotori's corpse, whole and intact (save for the big hole through the chest. Maybe she can get together with Movie Anthy and trade accesories.) What-what-WHAT?? No Amazing Severed Head Kotori(tm)? The world will never be the same. XD

I really do not get what the big deal is with Christian schools/organizations and Harry Potter. More specifically, what the big deal is about it teaching witchcraft and stuff. I've been going to Catholic schools my entire life, and they never tried to drum it into me that witchcraft (as portrayed in books, cartoons, etc.) is bad and evil and you will go to Hell if you do it. Maybe that's because last time I checked, witchcraft as portrayed in books, cartoons, etc. WASN'T REAL. Nobody in real life can get anything particularly interesting out of waving a small piece of wood about and reciting a few nonsense words. It's called MAKE-BELIEVE. Sure there are modern day Wiccans, but to the best of my rather limited knowledge, they don't do anything witchy like flying around on broomsticks or turning themselves into dogs; and I'm reasonably certain that they don't hold Black Masses and drink babies blood and summon up Satan so they can line up to kiss his posterior, either. :P
You could much more sensibly assert that vampires are evil and dangerous and enemies of the Church, etc. But why don't they hold big public burnings of Bram Stoker's Dracula and Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles? Because everybody knows that vampires aren't real, dammit! Even if your kid reads these books and gets interested in the "romance" of vampirism or some such fluff, the worst he can do is become an annoying Goth poseur and write bad poetry.
Anyway, that's pretty much a useless rant right there, and I'm sorry to have wasted your time with it. On to slightly more pleasant things. Today I went back to my old high school, because they were having their annual fair. Aside from a couple of things they never had before, like wall-climbing, german sausages, and a pet booth(!), everything was much the same as it was when I was in high school. Very weird.
And go here to download the old black-and-white LOTR movie. Galadriel's accent absolutely killed me. XD And Frodo kicked ASS! "'Need help on the quest', huh!"

Sometimes I really worry about myself. A while ago I was in the shower, thinking about a Philosophy assignment I hadn't started yet. I was so preoccupied with those thoughts that it took a while for me to realize that I had been saying, "I am Radagast... the Brown!!", aloud, over and over again, for several minutes.
...I wonder if they have a name for that sort of thing?

Oh, thanks a fat frigging lot for spoiling me on the winner of Survivor before I get to watch the local broadcast tonight. Grr. I should just... stay off the internet entirely. Yeah. That's what I'll do.

Keheheh, he quotes from Voltaire's Candide at the end! I'd always thought of Series of Unfortunate Events as Candide for kids. XD And it's nice to hear that they're thinking of making a movie, though I'm disappointed that it's not going to be animated. Live action wouldn't be too bad, except how in God's name are they going to do Sunny? They're never going to find a one-year-old with the dramatic range or athletic abilities (climbing up and down an elevator shaft before one is even able to walk is no mean feat). They'd better not do a CG Sunny; that would be grotesque. XP

Discussion Question #11 from the Reader's Guide to A Series of Unfortunate Events: In each of Mr. Snicket's books, there is no evidence that Count Olaf has ever been captured by the appropriate authorities. Is this more terrifying than horrifying, or more horrifying than terrifying? Discuss. (from lemonysnicket.com)
Finished Book the Eighth: The Hostile Hospital last night. Gah, intense. @__@ Since Book the Seventh, the series has gotten even more horrible and disturbing, which is a good thing. Though I suspect I was disturbed the most by the reappearance of the Lolita stuff from the first book (i.e. creepy old men leering over 14-year-old Violet). @___@
At any rate, I eagerly await Book the Ninth (which apparently won't be out 'till June X__x). Dammit, Snicket, you'd better tell us who Beatrice is soon. Though I have a sinking suspicion that she's the Baudelaire's mother , 'cause that would kind of make sense. Though, uh... I kinda hope not. ^^;;
Discussion Question #2: The theme of The Reptile Room might be best stated, "Look out for Count Olaf -- he will try to murder you!" Why do you think there are so few books that deal with this theme? Good question. XD

Watching Strange Dawn on AXN. Oh, look; Schoolgirls in a strange fantasy world. Except that this strange fantasy world seems to be populated entirely by little SD people. O___O It's highly amusing, hearing all this heavy dialogue and dramatic voice acting coming from little 2-foot high round-faced noseless earless people. ^0^

AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! Oh God, I waaaaaant iiiiiiit~!! ;___; Okay, so I already have all of Akazukin Chacha, albeit dubbed in English, which I taped myself off of Cartoon Network. Still. I want it.

One would think that five pages of Snape screencaps would be reason enough to visit a page; but what makes this doubly engaging is the captions. "How dare you look at my legs!" This should have been the dialogue in the actual movie. XD
Lord of the Rings opened around here last Friday, which means that this weekend was the first weekend. Today, Monday, EVERYBODY at school was talking about the movie. I overheard them while buying iced tea in the cafeteria. I overheard them in class while waiting for the teacher. I overheard them in the long line for tuition payments. In every case, the conversation would begin with something like, "Have you seen Lord of the Rings yet?", and from there almost immediately spin off into how cool/cute/hot Legolas was. Even the guys were talking about how good-looking he was. I am not making this up. It was creepy.

Now Reading: A Series Of Unfortunate Events, Book the Sixth: The Ersatz Elevator.
Went out today with Mom and Carlo. Saw Bagong Buwan ("New Moon"), which is a movie about how Muslims and Christians shouldn't fight each other because war sucks. A pretty decent film with a noble sentiment, though a bit preachy in parts. Cesar Montano is to Marilou Diaz-Abaya as Johnny Depp is to Tim Burton. XD
Also, Mom bought me Series of Unfortunate Events books 6, 7, and 8. >:D

Oh dear God. Oh dear God, no.
A review of the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen movie script.
I knew that it was, in all likelihood, going to turn out bad. I had a real sinking feeling when I first heard Tom Sawyer was being added to the story. But I like to be an optimist. I think I was still holding on to some tiny shred of hope that, even if it was a bit of a stinker, maybe, just maybe, the movie would be a teeny bit worthwhile. That maybe it wouldn't be ALL bad.
But it's worse than I ever could have imagined.
*is in shock*
Goddamnit. I suppose Harry Potter, X-Men, and Lord of the Rings lulled me into a false sense of security: that maybe Hollywood wasn't all that bad at adapting things into movie form. So much for that. But I would have traded Harry Potter, X-Men, and LOTR -- all of it -- just for one really kick-ass League of Extraordinary Gentlemen movie. Cast Aaron Carter as Frodo! Cast Nicholas Cage as Snape! Cast Adam West as Wolverine! I don't frigging care! Just for one shot of the Nautilus coming out of the water, just to hear Mina say, "Dangerous men? Why captain, you have no idea." ;_______;
Which comes to what, for me, is the absolute worst thing about this treatment. I knew that it was extremely likely that Mina in the movie would suffer from "Cardcaptors" syndrome: being made a supporting character in her own story. I had a feeling that they would try and soften her, make her the chick, the token female; the one who acts all tough in the beginning in order to seem like a "liberated" woman, and then at the first sign of trouble falls into the main guy's arms. Or gets kidnapped by the bad guy. XO~~~~~~
I knew something like that would probably happen; but that didn't do anything to dispel the shock and horror when I read what they had done to her. WHY Mina-sama, my hero? Why'd it have to be you?? *cries*
And I don't think I need to go into how much it sucks that this is now yet another American action movie about an American being cooler than people from other countries, and saving the world for America. Yo fucking Joe.
I've died and gone to Hell. Excuse me.

Now Reading: A Series Of Unfortunate Events, Book the Fifth: The Austere Academy. My new addiction. XD And not a cheap one, with eight books at PhP400 a pop... On the bright side, though, it actually comes to a dollar or two cheaper than the US cover price. ^.^
Anyway, school started again for me yesterday. >_< Who was the idiot who decided to start school on a frigging Thursday?? It's not as if we accomplished anything important in class over those two precious days before the weekend: out of the five classes I went to, only one teacher had an actual lecture for the whole period. One just spent a half hour summarizing some general stuff about where we are in the lesson so far; another one just gave us our test results from last month and then dismissed us; and the other two were no-shows. -_-;; I could have stayed in bed, for crying out loud...
In other news, my new haircut seems to be a success. At least, all the people I ran into seemed to like it. It is a pretty major change. It also may be the closest I've ever come to having an anime hairstyle. O__O
Oh, I forgot to mention that I saw LOTR for the second time last Wednesday night, courtesy of my amazing tito Kaiku, who arranged a private screening. *__* Carlo invited about a hundred of his friends, most of whom were girls who made delighted noises every time Legolas appeared on the screen. ^0^
Hey, look! It's our good friend, Elven Companion! Say hi, kids!

My goodness, WHY?! Considering that I spent most of the book/movie screaming "Don't put it on, you idiot! No! For the love of God, DON'T put on the ring! Ack!" X__x

Archived. Maybe this year I can actually start archiving on a semi-regular basis. For a brief account of What I Did In Baguio, please see last archive.
Well, it's a whole new year. 2001, the "official" first year of the New Millenium, is over; and the world didn't end or anything. Well, that's not exactly right. The world ended a bit in June when Dad died. Then it ended again on September 11; and since then, it seems like it's ended about a hundred times over. But look, it's still here. Funny old world, I say.
