A Living, Growing Thing

The final dying sounds of their dress rehearsal left the Laurel Players with nothing to do but stand there, silent and helpless, blinking out over the footlights of an empty auditorium.

Red Punch Buggie

" Why did everything always change, when all you wanted, all you had ever humbly asked of whatever God there might be, was that certain things be allowed to remain the same? (3, ii)

And there's a fairly good rule-of-thumb for you, Shep: take somebody who worries about life passing them by and the chances are about a hundred-to-eight to one that it's their own Emotional Problem. (3, iii)

The house looked very neat and white as it emerged through the green and yellow leaves; it wasn't such a bad house after all. It looked, as John Givings had once said, like a place where people lived--a place where the difficult, intricate process of living could sometimes give rise to incredible harmonies of happiness and sometimes to near-tragic disorder, as well as to ludicrous minor interludes ("That's All, Folks!"); a place where it was possible for whole summers to be kind of crazy, where it was possible to feel lonely and confused in many ways and for things to look pretty bleak from time to time, but where everything, in the final analysis, was going to be alright. (3, iv)

...if you wanted to do something absolutely honest, something true, it always turned out to be a thing that had to be done alone. (3, vii)

The whole point about crying was to quit before you cornied it up. The whole point of grief itself was to cut it out while it was still honest, while it still meant something. Because the thing was so easily corrupted: let yourself go and you started embellishing your own sobs... (3, ix)

EDIT (3:20 am) Finished Revolutionary Road and my heart is breaking, breaking, breaking.

So I'm Back to the Velvet Underground

Lightnight strikes, maybe once, maybe twice
And it all comes back to you.
You go
Wherever you go today
You go today.

One of my favourite things to do recently is to type "Fleet" into the search field of my iTunes and let the mix of Fleet Foxes and Fleetwood Mac play in random order. I've been wasting my day and I guess it's alright. Weather's mucky. I really want to go to a used bookstore.

It's fun and all to write about my days, the weekend previous, but it's also boring for you, dear readers HAHA. It was splendid, though, thanks for asking. Cancelled the cruise, dinner at Ho Ho Seafood Restaurant in the International District with Bill and his parents instead. Yes, I was nervous; yes, it went well; his parents are so, so nice. I wish my parents were as understanding myself. The food was amazing, had oysters for the first time. Good golly. Walked with Bill through Uwajimaya, Brawl at Zack's, Night at Bill's. Morning = Meri, hilarious doorbell, UT, Yunnie, Brawl, Downtown with Zack & Tim as well, transfer of candies, teasing Bill, peanut butter cheesecake brownies. Lazy, lazy Sunday, lunch with Mandrew and a good talk with Lorraine. Listened to Kelsey and Nicole F.'s band over the phone. One week anniversary? HAHA are we one of those couples? Forgive me, it's so new. Haha

I didn't know everything could be so good. The only thing is that I miss all the Bremertonians/Silverdalites. I don't want you guys to think I'm too busy with Bill to call, so call anytime and call often. In fact, just meet me and we can get CocoMo's, ok?

I need to come up with a good concept for the 100 Themes thing that Nadine's doing. Until then, I'm tossing around ideas.

Pikachu, I FFFFound You!
Days are blurring, it's crazy cause I think things that happened a few weeks ago really happened yesterday. Right now I'm sitting in on Kelly, Kevin, and John's CSE 190 class, basically how to code for teh internetz. All I do is look at ffffound and computer love. I really hope I get in the Design Programme, but if I don't oh wellz.

YESTERDAY I woke up from Bill's and we had a very nice breakfast of french toast his mom brought him from home. From there I had the Awful 3.5hour Block of Classes (ABC). Holy Cow. Little Thai with Zack then IMA with Dara, who is so adorable when she talks about Stu. Good racquetball game, mang. Next time I won't drool, haha. I passed Jesse and Julian on the Ave on the way to the IMA, it's so cool to see people everywhere. Also, while working out, Dara spotted what was probably the most hairiest guy I have ever seen. He was wearing a tank top, to boot. Sweet Baby Jesus, why.

Ate dinner with Kevin, Lorraine, Cameron, Jim, Nadine, Dara. Good stuff. Cameron's gonna see Beirut in Portland this weekend. I'm sooo jealous, omagahh. Volunteered at Rick's with Lorraine and Kelly. So fun. I'm definitely doing it again. We got around 5 dollars in tips; I took all the change so I could put it in my piggy bank

Bill showed up with David, hung out while I was busy with customers. Then we went to the dorms, but not before sitting with Nadine and laughing about confidence.

TODAY Bill and I briskly walked to POLS 201 since Bill's never been late to a class in his life. Immediately afterward, lunch with Kevs, Nades, Nicram, & Kelso. Nicole, I hope your project went well. You'll become Karen Cheng and the world will be relieved that she had found a successor.

LING 200 with Nades, singing "The Most Beautiful Girl in the Room" on the way. Our linguistics professor is so cute, HAHA. We were learning about syntactical ambiguity and she was reading off sentences like "Today's lecture will be discussing sex with Dr. Ruth," and "I shot an elephant in my pajamas," while giggling, but then she got to "Our new, convenient mixing bowls are perfect for chefs with round bottoms perfect for beating," she was giggling to the point where she couldn't read it. HAHA Yay!

Hung out with BIll afterwards, we went to Than Vi (sp?) on the Ave for three dollar Vietnamese sandwiches, but not before walking through campus with all the Washington Week festivities. Saw the ArtLink booths, Dancers were doing exercises on the quad. We saw Appi by Smith Hall with Swing Club. Saw April at by Keane then passed through Red Square and saw Mandrew volunteering for Poly(nesian) Day. I love spring!

Everyone's out in the sun, Yay!

Bill got his sandwich from the really nice cashier lady, the one who addresses customers as "brother" or "sister," and says "Take it in easy!" when we leave. Made our way to Bill's apartment. Bill had to go to the Summer in China orientation meeting so he would be meeting his parents and we saw them on the way. Meeting them I was so nervous and I really wanted them to like me but I was shy and didn't say much. His mom is so nice haha. Tried to play Brawl for a little while, I'm trying to be good with Samus but she's so floaty.

Ran to make sure BIll wasn't late for his orientation, and I called Nades to see what was going on. Her, Nicole, Kelsey, and Kevin are all going home this week. She said that Kevin and Nandrew were skipping their Physics of Music Class (Nandrew went to see Bill Gates at Keane Hall HAHA) and I decided to sit in on the CSE 190 class where I am now. Story has come full circle. I'm just blogging while everyone's learning internet hax. Simple mazes and paper mario puzzles.

After this, I think I'll hang out with Kevin some more, wait for Bill's call so we can go to Cedars or something tonight for our double date. Yay!

Shoes LOL
Good few days: Sunday after I posted, Bill showed up and he finished the leftovers Nicole and Nadine provided. I showed him Rick's and he talked to everyone about Brawl. You're a Social Butterfly, guy. Stayed up with Nadine talking about our lives and she showed me her bulletin board post on her blog. My favourite part of the conversation?

Ryan: Wow, there's a lot of stuff here I didn't know you had on your wall. In fact, I haven't been in your room in a long time.

Nadine (Morose): No one has.

Ryan and Nadine both stare at each other, considering the ways in which her comment could be skewed and wondering if the other is thinking the same thing, eyes shifting and squinting daring the other to laugh first. Both crumple into fits of laughter. Oh, Nades!

Monday meant Frisbee meant agony for anyone witnessing my awkwardness on the field. Good times with Kevs, Zacharius, Nades, and American Pie. Ate at The 8, then showered and Bill came over for a little while after his board meeting for his fraternity then we both went to Zack's apartment for teh Brawlz. We got food from Little Thai and learned that the nice lady who works there is leaving for Bangkok for two months, le sigh, good for her. Stayed at Zack's for a while longer and Tim showed up. Bill and I left for his apartment close to twilight again as the "You're-Up-Too-Late Bird" was whistling.

Today, woke up early for classes, stayed up for most of ARCH 251. Lunch with the Architects and Bill, then Bill and I walked to the Bank of America on the Ave, then went to Bill's and watched him beat Ganon/dorf in Ocarina of Time, helped him with Wewtopia, talked to Meri then had Bill to to Mar(y)iella, then had a very pleasant nap. Told him the "I Love You More Than Salt" story. Went back to the dorms at 11:00, but not before going to the Burger Hut with Bill so he could grab some food. Bought groceries from Ian's and sat for a while with the Lunchables. Shower. Blog.

* * * * *

As I mentioned earlier, Nadine had a really good idea on her blog where she talked about the shrine that is her bulletin board. I thought I'd copy that, and of course she called me out on it on the next day's post.

01.) Postcards (3) Each from a friend's trips over the summer. One from Japan given to me from Misha, one from Italy given to me by Kelsey, one from Lorraine from when she went to France. I wish I got postcards from the Philippines but the place I was staying at wasn't exactly a tourist destination, therefore no place was stocking them in the first place. Next time, yes?

02.) Picture of My Kitchen Taken at night when no one's around, the time when I'm usually awake at home. Taken from the perspective I usually see it, from the couch. It's strange to call it "home," when I consider Seattle to be so much closer to what I imagine the word "home" to be. It's even weird to call it my kitchen. It's nice though, to have the picture up, even just to remind me of everything, the good and the bad alike. I should visit home soon, I guess.

03.) Save $3 At Best Buy! A coupon cut from Erica's Chex Mix bag one day last quarter. I miss eating with the FIG!

04.) Business Cards (3) One from the Architecture Advisor, the EOP Advisor, and one from an HFS Lady. I used to have Robert's up there as well, but I think it fell down or something.

05.) Sakuracon '08 Pass Good, good times.

06.) Ticket Stub from 'Love and Tragedy' From the performance by the Seattle Symphony at Benaroya Hall. Lorraine and I went with Kevin because he needed to go for his music class. Beautiful. I'm really glad we went.

07.) Madonna Mini Record Art Piece by Janelle On the back it says "To: Ryan Diaz, From: Janelle Quibuyen, 9/23/05, HAHA." Janelle I miss you, visit soon.

08.) Poster of Melee Characters From the tournament advertisements at McCarty. Stolen for me by Nicole and Dara. You guys know what I like. Haha.

09.) "Mein Ohrstücker / Love is Wonderful / Jo" Note that I found at the U-Bookstore with Nicole and Cameron

10.) Birthday Card from Kevin Written in my favourite font, Helvetica. Sorry I haven't been hanging around lately, guy. We'll watch the Helvetica documentary later, ok? I had a dream your leg was amputated as a result of a horrible, horrible biking accident. I'll never be mean to you again, I swear HAHA.

11.) Ferry Schedule For Winter. Need a new one.

12.) Promotional Materials / Mini Posters (4) A Barbara Kruger piece, "Admit Nothing, Blame Everyone, Be Bitter." "When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold." "Engineers in the Google Seattle office love coming to work every day, just ask them." A creepy picture of Jesus. Good times, guys. Good times

13.) Post-It Notes (5) Four are art things: "Room," "Descendant of Darkness, Eyes," "Fix It," & "byebyebyebyebye." The last I only put up last night. Bill was writing Chinese characters on a post-it note and I thought it looked pretty. I only remembered to ask him what they meant after he and I were had already left for Zack's. They say "I like you." I like you, too, guy. I like you a lot.

Focus Punch
Wonderful day yesterday but I'll keep it short (I swear) since the lingering feeling of it all wouldn't stand up to words alone. I can, however, present it in the manner of Nicole:

Woke up and saw Chase off to SPU / IMA with Kevs and Nades, ran a mile on the track, finally took Kevin to the weight room / Dim sum at House of Hong with Nades, Kevin, Nandrew, and Bill / Wewtopia, Breloom & Smeargle, Yunnie / Brawl & Techno at Bill's / Capitol Hill, Café Vita, Neumo's / Nades, Kevin, Nades, Chase, Matt, Arabella, Nicole, Kelsey, Willman, you guys are my extended family / Met Ben (Chase's Little Friend) and Chase's other friend whose name I can't remember / Man Plus was annoying, Gasworx was A-F'ING-MAZING, Handsome Furs AMAZING, Teenagers merely Okie-Dokie / Crowd-surfing mishaps, dancing, moshing with Nadine, "Ok... that's a dude, uh, ok fine." / Pita Pit and remembering that Ara is Half-Kapangpangan / 49 to U District / Zack & Tim's for Brawl, cheese and crackers / Waited 'til 3 in the morning for Bill to come back so we could walk back to his apartment at twilight / Woke up at 11 to get ready for Frisbee / The biggest breakfast I've had in a long, long while with Kelsey, John, and Kevin / Frisbee cancelled, but practised with Kevin, Tim, and Nandrew / Café on the Ave, Stars as background music / Back at Grey Lounge where a girl played church songs on the piano / Lulz: The Holy Cow that gives its milk and meat, Caramell Dansen, Muscle Milk, WP,DR waiting for the bus, the music at The 8, "And on the 8th day...," The steady extinction of Bees, Honey, and Bananas / Food from Nades and Nicole / Life is good and I just got a call from my boyfriend that he might visit after work and he makes me very, very happy.

"If life gives you lemons, you paint that shit GOLD."
Summary rundown of the past three days:

+ Helped Tim and Zack work on their papers at Bill's from Wednesday night on to the wee hours of Thursday morning. Good job guys, finished and everything.

+ Woke up from Bill's and onwards to ready for class; it's nice to be walking around campus in the morning. On my way back to Haggett, I realized that I could take the 74 to Bill's to save time later on. Honours computer lab shut down that day, had to pay to print. Finished LING 200 homework in my dorm, onwards to the 3.5 hour block of classes.

+ Ate lunch with just Erica, good times.

+ Readied for Bellevue with Kelsey, Nicole, Tim, and Bill. Tim and Bill took the 271; Kelsey, Nicole, and I took the 167 to SE 8th St and 114 Ave (Numbers I will never forget), Missed our stop and got off two stops later to take the 560 back. After getting off at 8th and 112th, we wandered around looking for the place to meet Robert Riedl at HerInteractive to talk about our video game concept.

+ He gave us a tour of the HerInteractive headquarters, showed us a design book by Tufte; Took us to a fancy Italian restaurant in Old Town Bellevue, and I had really good tortellini. I think I'm warming up to Italian food, just as long as it doesn't involve marinara sauce. Good talk, good times, good guy.

+ The three of us were dropped off by Robert at Bellevue Square, met with Tim and Zack. A fashion show was going on, then Bill and Tim showed me Armani Exchange. They chose three outfits for me to try on, it was cool since they actually had clothes that fit me without being to loose or too tight. Pretty expensive, but I'll just look for clothes similar at Buffalo or Crossroads or Goodwill or something haha.

+ Bus back to UW, Kelsey chose a good seat HAHA Jay-kay. Went back to Haggett, watched The Office with Dylan and Roomie (Randrew). Attempted to help Nicole with mounting her photos, got a chai from Nadine as she came back from work, biked to Zack's

+ Brawl Brawl Brawl. As it got late, Bill and I went to his apartment, ate an organic peanut butter sandwich, good talk with Bill, sleep.

+ Woke up friday morning for LING 200 since POL S 201 was cancelled. shower with nice-smelling body wash (which, I've learned from LING, is a compound word morphologically, despite the orthography of the space in between). I'm thinking about taking Tagalog next year, but I promised Bill I'd take Chinese. Ah well, what I would really want to take is Kapangpangan, which I'll probably just learn from my parents.

+ Drawing, guy, friend, funny, on the way, shallow water, past tense, present, good?

+ Since I woke up at 11-ish and took a shower, I tried to make it to breakfast with the Comp Sci Lunchables, only made it to the last few minutes, though even that was worth it since I saw Nicole, her figgas, and Kelsey sitting together also. Arrived in time to listen to Caramelldansen played on John's computer. Cue earwig.

+ Weird weather, sun in the morning, rain in the afternoon, hail around 6 to 8 at night, not raining or hailing around 1 in the morning.

+ LING 200, Morphology.

+ Came back to dorms, had an awful time trying to get my laundry done. Various roadblocks in store including lack of funds, failure in attempt at putting funds on my Husky Card Account, lack of detergent, someone taking my washer in Haggett, moving to McMahon but again forgetting the detergent. I ended up just going to The 8 and eating a caesar salad made by Egg Man HAHA. Finally went back to Haggett, stored funds into my card properly, got it done. While waiting for the dryer, walked to Odegaard to drop off my overdue movies I rented last Friday. Since I left my bike at McMahon when I went to breakfast I returned it to Haggett on the way back.

+ Bill called during my trip to Odegaard about the Wii-lay for Life. I tell him I could go, forgetting that Chase was coming over in just a few minutes. Nadine and Kevin get out of class, I call Bill and tell him I can't make it to the tournament, sorry, guy. Watch an episode-ish of Weeds with Nandrew, Nadine, Kevin, Matt, and John. See Nicole in her room, read When I Knew. Such a sweet book.

+ We go to The 8 to wait for Chase. Saw Jenna and Erica, say hello to them both. Chase arrives, haven't seen that crazy mofo in weeks. Great reunion. Kevin, Chase, Nicole, Nadine, Lorraine and I all head off on the 49 to Neumo's to meet Arabella and see the Quiet Ones, Fleet Foxes, and Blitzen Trapper. Did not care for the other two but OMFG was Fleet Foxes amazing. I'm in la-la-love. Really, really, really amazing. Deer in the headlights.

+ Show gets done at 1-ish. QFC then everyone but Arabella comes back to UW. Strobelight party in my room, Chase shows us "Wizard People, Dear Reader" on Youtube. Hilarious. Chase stays over in my room for the night. Now I'm blogging. Now I'm done.

The Four Noble Truths

I Love You, Felix Gonzalez-Torres

Dukkha, the Nature of Suffering
"...birth is suffering, aging is suffering, illness is suffering, death is suffering; union with what is displeasing is suffering; separation from what is pleasing is suffering; not to get what one wants is suffering."

Samudaya, Suffering's Origin
"...it is this craving which leads to renewed existence, accompanied by delight and lust, seeking delight here and there, that is, craving for sensual pleasures, craving for existence, craving for extermination."

Nirodha, Suffering's Cessation
"...it is the remainderless fading away and cessation of that same craving, the giving up and relinquishing of it, freedom from it, nonreliance on it."

Marga, the Way Leading to the Cessation of Suffering
"...it is the Noble Eightfold Path; that is, right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration."

The Eightfold Path

Right View I think that I'm where I want to be situated. Middle ground is good. View is vision is understanding. I'm revolving, I think. Stupid essay is completed at least, school-wise, I mean. View is but perspective is but the motion of limbs that propels us through time, right? Held fastened is alright since I can see everyone and everything around me. Will have to do. Two steps backward and one step forward wouldn't be awful nor not awful.

Right Intention I am keenly intent on enjoying whatever happens. I'm going to Pho with the Lunchables. Maybe I should rename them to something more computer savvy. Good day yesterday with Bill. Good night yesterday with Nadine, Kevin, Andrew, Lorraine, and Dara. Sorry I didn't go to the IMA, though. Need to straighten intentions in order, I guess. In a love/hate situation with Bob Dylan right now. Two songs in mind. "IAM,B" and "YGMMLWYG." Good stuff.

Right Speech Lorraine, I'm glad we talked and that you're enjoying this quarter so much more than the last two. I need to talk to people more, feels like I haven't seen some of you in ages. Sometimes not speaking but presence is enough. See you later, right?

Right Action Concerning this, I'll have ya'll know that I did not use Sparknotes for my essay after all. Thanks for the piggy bank, Bill, I've been wanting one since forever. I remember when I was little and I had a big blue, plastic piggy bank, about a foot long and a foot in circumference, and I filled it three-fourths full before I cracked it open, and I felt so bad that I destroyed what amounted to the only long-term pet I've ever had. I'm glad this one has a plug on the bottom.

Right Livelihood I think I've messed up but not too horribly. Harm unto others? Maybe, maybe not. Unravel unravel unravel.

Right Effort Last night, walking home from Bill's, I walked up to north campus and enjoyed the solitude. I love the transitory state of the cherry blossom trees, muddy pink and green branches and the remnants of petals all fluttered in the grass below. Petals lined the sides of the brick walkways like a procession as I passed through. Ate dinner alone, worked on my paper alone, that is, until I met the kids at the Grey Lounge later. It was nice yet understandably lonely. Good time for my thoughts. Working hard towards an epiphany that won't come.

Right Mindfulness Tomorrow is lunch at Bellevue with Robert Riedl with Nicole and Kelsey. Friday is Fleet Foxes, Saturday Frisbee Practise and the Teenagers and the Handsome Furs. Sometime during the weekend, perhaps biking with Matt. A lot to juggle, good to stay active? Kind of opposite to the previous position, I guess no realizing comes with a cluttered mind, but sometimes it's also good to be preoccupied. Ah well.

Right Concentration The first week of classes, Nicole, Cameron, and I were all at the U Bookstore, and there's a lot of pens everywhere in the supplies section. They have those little paper pads you can test pens on, and by the fountain pens, someone had scrawled amazing calligraphy, except that it's in German. From what I can decipher it says "Meine (O?)hrstucke" or something like that. I just can't tell what the first letter says. I hope it's nothing bad. Below it, someone else (maybe the same person?) had written "Love is Wonderful." I ripped off that piece of paper and took it with me. I had misplaced it since then, only to find it just two days ago on my floor. It's now posted to the wall in front of me as I type, where everything else important is tacked on as well. Good message to concentrate on.

Loaf of Bread, Cereal, Milk
I like taking quizzes and personality tests. I like someone telling me what and who I am and agreeing with them. It's less work for me, yes?

A good grey day. Kevin's Google three day forecast thing displayed thunderbolts and rain and clouds. The weather wasn't really that epic but still, pretty listless. AP Gov POL S 201 was POL S 201, lunch was hilarious with John confusing what I would imagine as the the word "lascivious" with "beastiality." HAHA What the eff, John. He had to look it up on Google to understand how horribly wrong he was. How horribly, horribly wrong. HAHA Bum Hair! That's groce.

Linguistics was fun, talked to the professor about Kapangpangan. Nice.

IMA by myself after LING 200. It was a new experience, nice to be alone, but also lonely. Worked out, ran a little, read my Hobbes (t-minus 3 days and counting). While I was there, I was on a weight machine when I noticed flashing cop lights in the distance, and a motorcade of countless popo were shuttling along and I realized that the Dalai Lama was still in town. That was cool, I was at least within a mile radius of His Holiness. I'm a really bad Buddhist. Need to work on that. Maybe I'll rub the belly of my Buddha statue on my desk once or twice tomorrow morning before class.

I was there for an hour, and when I arrived at the IMA it was relatively sunny outside, nay, it was sunny. To the point that I even left my dorm without a jacket because I thought it would be too warm to go with it. I was wrong. Boy, was I ever. As I left it was pouring and there I was freezing and wet, but at least I had my smoothie and I was relatively content. I ducked in and out of places where I could avoid the rain: overhangings of the IMA, the Padelford parking lot, the McMahon parking lot, then to Haggett.

I came back to my dorm, changed, and called Bill. Took a bus to south campus, ducked through Condon, walked to his apartment. Watched him defeat Bongo Bongo and played Brawl. I even beat him once. Out of, say, 1,223,192 matches. Pretty good.

Ate at World Wrapps with Bill and Zack, saw Tim on the way but he was feeling under the weather (ha? ha? ugh rainy day, why!). Watched Zack unleash the unholy menace of Ifrit, whose FMV for the summon was incredibly long and epic, simply to kill two nameless, insignificant LVL 3 grunts. Hilarious overkill. While we were there I received texts from Matt about biking during the weekend. HEYELL YES. Just don't be too extreme, guy. My bike practically screams for a basket and streamers on the handlebars, so let's just take it slow.

Apparently caesar salad is the common thread of the day since John and Nandrew had caesar salad for lunch, I had a chicken caesar wrap at World Wrapps and when Bill and I went to The 8 (Zack had left to see Tim) to meet Kevin and Nades, Kevin had finished his own caesar salad. Crazy.

Lorraine showed up and we five of us shared butter pecan ice cream. So much for the work out haha. We dispersed to work on homework shortly after, except Bill and I played hooky and I showed him all the ridiculous things in my room, my photos and writings. I'm glad that we spent two hours not doing homework. Strobe Light parties, realising how ticklish I am, Paper Mario, procrastinating, I told him about Mariela, we played the funny "lift this finger" inverted finger game that Nicole taught me, patty cake, Bill hurt his hand, shared poems, photos, we did everything except I didn't show you my Pokemons as we had originally intended. HAHA, next time, yes? We have to pick up on the conversation we were having.

Went down to the Grey Lounge; Bill left and Lorraine, Cameron, Jimmy, Nades and her Andrew, Kevin, and Nicole were all being responsible and studying hard. That is, until I showed up and we played the Flickr question game. Kevin, why Jessica Alba? Srsly. I thought you had class. Jim & Cameron, not you guys too. Jeez. Fularious.

We (minus Cameron and Jim) all went to Ian's before it closed and I bought groceries. I feel so independent now. Scheduled a DJ tutorial session with Kelly. Talked to a fellow Ian's employee about the POL S essay we both had to start writing. My condolences to Marie and her family.

Needs more strobe light.

Nicole, I wish I had known you while we were growing up

The Keys to Your Heart
You are attracted to those who have a split personality - cold as ice on the outside but hot as fire in the heart.

In love, you feel the most alive when your partner is patient and never willing to give up on you.

You'd like to your lover to think you are stylish and alluring.

You would be forced to break up with someone who was insecure and in constant need of reassurance.

Your ideal relationship is comforting. You crave a relationship where you always feel warmth and love.

Your risk of cheating is zero. You care about society and morality. You would never break a commitment.

You think of marriage as something that will confine you. You are afraid of marriage.

In this moment, you think of love as commitment. Love only works when both people are totally devoted.
What Are The Keys To Your Heart?

This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things
Yaaaay! Revitalising weekend (from what, I don't know, just good times all around, I guess). Saturday woke up around noon-ish, ate breakfast with Kevs cause the girls went downtown. Kevin himself had apparently just gone running on the Burke Gilman. What the eff, guys. Way to make me seem ineffectual and sloth-y.

Bland breakfast then Kevin said needed to buy new sandals so we walked to M.J. Feet on the Ave, a store I had never noticed before. Inside it was sulfur-yellow and looked like a Hobbit's house. On the way we passed the Quad and there were millions of people. I Love Spring! Really warm, though. Kevin bought Birkenstocks. We were glad that today was a good day to finally go to Green Lake with the girls.

Called Nandrew, he said he'd come along as soon as he finished his homework. Kevin and I took the 48 bus, I brought along Hobbes, since I still have to work on that. We got off on the stop by Gregg's Cycle Shop or whatever, something like that, and looked around. I had intended to buy a bike lock, but no dice.

We found a nice spot under a cherry blossom tree, took a little nap. Got up to play frisbee for a little bit while waiting for Nandrew. He arrived, more frisbee. Frisbee is taking over my life.

Eventually Nicole, Lorraine, and Dara called to say they (Bill just called [it's 9:58] haha. Little does he know I'm soon to write about him. Does anybody realize I'm writing about them while I'm writing about them? That's cool to think about) were at Green Lake already, but that they were going to eat at a Mexican place, so Kevin, Nandrew and I went to Starbucks to wait for them. I wanted a CocoMo but all they had was cocoNOT flavouring, as in NO coconut flavouring (actually, that first thing was a typo, which I've altered to fit into a joke. Ha ha?). Too bad, Starbucks. You lost out on the satisfaction of a customer. Kevin didn't order my drink non-fat for me. Do you even know me at all? HAHA

I'm actually sitting by him and Nadine right now. I told them that I was writing about Kevin not knowing to get me a non-fat drink, then he it explained the situation to Nadine and Nadine told him about the time she made me a free drink when she went on break at work, and after all her labor and her care, that when I got it, the first thing I said was "It's non-fat, right? HAHA I'm just joking, guys. I do it for the lulz.

Lorraine had to leave for Cabaret so Nicole, Dara (whose hair was GORGEOUS OMFG), Kevin, Nandrew, and I played frisbee under the same cherry blossom tree as before, took good photos with Nadine's camera, played under the sun, rode Nandrew's ridiculously tall bike, we all decided to go home after 2-3 hours and took the 48 back, but not before waiting 30 minutes for it to show up, and singing the theme song from Con Air again, and other assorted R&B, Flight of the Conchords, and others. Need to ask Nicole what they were to remember. Bob Dylan songs, also.

Nicole and Dara went back to the dorms to watch Dexter and Kevin and I went to the Ave to eat with Tim and Nandrew. By chance we passed by Matt outside of Crossroads, which was AMAZING. Haven't seen him in ages (well, since Sakuracon). Matt, you and your fixed-gear are so cool haha. Also, while decided where to eat (it was a toss up between Orange King, which was closed, Yummie Bites, closed, and Chipotle, OPEN!), Tim saw Zack so he joined us for dinner at Chipotle. Talked to Matt about his life, told him about Neighbours, he said he'd come with us next time we go, and this time with Willman and Arabella in tow (YAY! Haha).

Matt had to stay and talk to his friend about apartments, so Tim, Kevin, Nandrew, Zack, and I went to Zack's apartment to play Brawl before Doug's party at the same. I went to the restroom on Zack's side of the apartment and while I was washing my hands I heard voices talking, but one of them wasn't Tim's or Zack's or Kevin's or Nandrew's, so I'm trying to think of whose it belonged to when Bill turned the corner and scared me haha. Met his friend Meri, who's so nice, and reminds me of my own Mary. Aww I miss you Mariela! Brawl Brawl Brawl, and just before we annoyed Doug to his limit, we all dispersed again, Bill, Meri, Kevin, Nandrew, and I to Yunnie; Zack and Tim stayed back at the apartment to wait for us to be done so we could all go to Bill's for more Brawl and Tim brought Liz who is HILARIOUS. "Goddamn Anti-Semitic piece of wire!" and singing songs from Chicago! HAHAHAHA I love new people YAY!

Yunnie with the kids. You guys are the best.

Brawl at Bill's. You guys are the best.

Passed on going to Neighbours with Zack, Meri, and Bill and the Frat. Sorry, mang, just tired from the day and not feeling up to it. Next time, yes? :(

Nandrew left early, then after more Brawl, Zack, Bill, Meri, Kevin, Liz, and I all went to Jimmy John's for foods, while Tim went back to the dorms. Kevin and I walked Liz home while everyone else went to Neighbours at around 2-ish. We had that awkward, "So-here-we-are-at-the-door-do-we-get-a-goodnight-kiss?" moment, decided to wait a while before taking it to a serious level. I mean, we just met that night, HAHA.

Walked back with Kevs, saw people watching Mythbusters on the outside wall of the Art Building. Need to do that some time.

Tricked Nicole into meeting us at the Grey Lounge, and the three of us talked about feelings til 6 in the morning. Good times, good conversation. Really, really gay conversation. HAHA You guys are the best.

Today, however, was really just blah. Weather greyer, woke up later, homework deadline nearer. Watched Children of Men with Nicole and Kevin, then worked on homework. Couldn't go to Tim's thing at Zack's, sorry, guy. Just know that I had a miserable time trying to decipher Hobbes. Ate a lot of nauseating food. Ugh, I hate Sundays. Anyway, good weekend overall, good job, team!

Kaluguran Da Ka
Constantly tired, what the eff. Good day, though. Typical Monday/Wednesday/Friday schedule, POL S 200 from 10:30 to 11:20, lunch (not with the Lunchables, this time, but with Nadine, Kevin, Alana, Kelsey, Nicole, Alana's friends). Sang the theme song from Con Air, and "Didn't We Almost Have It All." LING 200 from 12:30-1:20. Bill was supposed to sit in but had to speak with his mom. Fell asleep during, oh well.

On the way to LING 200, we passed by the HUB lawn and there were booths set up, one of which was offering free (FREE) books, so I asked for one, and it was about Youths and Multiracial Identity, pretty interesting, but I gave it to Kevin as a present HAHA. I checked the back of the book and it was $39 retail. HOLY COW. I didn't even get that much in my paycheck this time. IMMACULATE HEFFER. BTW, do I have to pay taxes? Must call dad.

After LING, walked/was-death-gripped with Nadine to her class in Condon (feel better, mang!), then went to Bill's where he and Josh and David were playing Pokemon Battle Revolution. I need to make my team NOW. Oh man, precious hours wasted not training the perfect team. What was I thinking? Jeez.

Met with Nicole and Dara 3:30-ish at the Henry Art Gallery to see the Kader Attia installations, saw Kelsey on the way there and we all basked in its glory. Yay!

4:30 and Kelsey had to leave, the other three of us met with Kevin, Lorraine and Nandrew for Gas Works, Kevs, Lolau, D4t4 and I all biked, Nicram and Dara Bo Bara used longboards. I love spring! Walking to the dorms through the Quad, the place was filled with people sitting on the grass, tight-rope walking, free-form bongos/percussion, the smell of marijuana, which I have just learned to recognise, because apparently, Kevin is a crazy junkie HAHA. So cool. Playing outside is the best.

Dara and Nandrew's friend (who works at the Seattle Aquarium? Is that the same girl?) both are jealous of my bike. OMG I LOVE MY BIKE!

Frisbee at Gas Works, Tim called, should have told him we were leaving later than when he called before. Sorry, guy! Next time, for sure! A woman there was handing out free Red Bulls, haha score.

The four bikers biked back, longboarders took a bus. Nandrew went to eat with his friends, Lorraine, Kevin, and I picked up Children of Men, Todo Sobre Mi Madre, and Artificial Intelligience: A.I. from Odegaard. Still feel bad that we passed on going to Zack's for Requiem for a Dream, but I don't think I can watch it again without sticking a knife in my heart.

Return to dorms, (I really can't wait any sooner to move into my own apartment with friends, omg), some free ice cream from Rick's, saw Jesse and Kelly and their excellent dance moves. Kevin and I watched A.I., finished, and now I'm looking up ways to learn Kapangpangan on teh interwebz and blogging. EARLY BEDTIME FTW!

Gonna wake up tomorrow at 9-ish, gonna finish Hobbes, maybe IMA, if I can fit it in, maybe go to frisbee practise at 2:30 at Bellevue, enjoy the weather. Essay Smeshay? Nahh.

"For by art is created that great Leviathan"
From the Henry Art Gallery Spring 2008 Preview Catalogue:

Kader Attia: New Works
Through May 25, 2008
Stroum Gallery
Visit this exhibition of installations and new video works by French-Algerian artist, Kader Attia, his first large-scale, solo exhibition in the U.S. Two major installtions, Rochers Carrés and Ghost fill the Henry's expansive Stroum Gallery, joined by other new artworks in sculpture and video.

Go Go Go! Ghost is one of the most amazing things I've seen in a long, long while. Amazing, breath-taking, and (funnily enough), haunting. Brilliant brilliant brilliant.

ASHITA ATATAKAKUNAKATTARA ASOBU
Heee heee I need to remember to test for my Japanese proficiency. Study sessions soon, Nades? Applied for the Design Entrance Exam. I'm on my way, baby. Also: because after taking any class I step out wide-eyed and tell everyone I want to major in the subject, I'm never going to talk about my major(s?) until it's all sorted out and definite. The whole "wide-eyed idealism" thing doesn't happen for Architecture, though. Haha, it is teh lulz.

I love school. I know a lot of people (Twins, I'm looking at you) say they aren't having the best time at UW, but I really like it. I like waking up to five different alarms and Nadine's wake up call (can't say the same thing for Randrew, though. Sorry, guy). I love taking classes even though I fall asleep during them, I love new people and I love to learn new things, too. It's just sometimes the whole thing resembles what I have termed, the Harry Potter Situation. Reading the books, I always was annoyed that Harry Potter didn't like to study, which for him, meant to learn new spells, the intricacies of wizard history, all the magical amazing things that would be ridiculously fun to know. I mean, who wouldn't want to have all the powers of Dumbledore, or, dareisayit?, Voldemort?

Then I realized this same thing could apply to me. I mean, I'm supposed to be learning about new stories, the intricacies of design and art, all the magical amazing things that would be ridiculously fun to know. Take Japanese, for instance, I mean, isn't it amazing that I have the opportunity that to learn freaking Japanese but still, I don't give my all to the subject. I guess things we have the ability to grasp, things that aren't out of bounds, the scope of our own capabilities don't excite us. Maybe I should join one of the many join "Fuck This, I'm Going to Hogwarts" groups on Facebook. Oh, university privilege. You're so bourgie. HAHA

So today, Nadine's call woke me up and we both went to breakfast. Went to POL S and Bill looked through my sketchbook. Haha it's so embarrassing, but I did want to show them, just to see their reactions at all the weird drawings therein. Hobbes is ugh.

Lunch with the Lunchables + Kelsey and Adil. Jesse is hilarious! HAHA

"
Adil: Bye guys! Jesse! Love ya, man.
Jesse: I like you...as a friend.
"

Also, I still can't believe Kelly moved out of the cluster. Oh vell, hope he's doing well.

Linguistics with Nadine afterwards, but before we watched girls from a sorority do a step dance monologue thing. They were, "DisTINCTive women," and all I got from their performance is that I need to find out how to sign up. Oh man, so cool!

Linguistics was foine, Professor Aldridge mentioned Tagalog again. That was cool. Funny conversation with Nadine about the people sitting next to us. Never again will I confuse 'Left' with 'Right.' HAHA

Went back to the room, did some chores (like finally folding my clean laundry and clearing the waste bin), then got a call from Lorraine at 2:45, to eat lunch with her at The 8. We talked about how tired we were, about our classes. She took a nap, while I tried to read for linguistics, but kept having hypnic jerks HAHA. After while, Arabella came over and I got my tickets to Fleet Foxes and Teenagers from her. Towards the end Kevin showed up at 5:22, and then we left. Crazy.

Bike riding with Arabella and Kevs. I LOVE MY BIKE!! First down to Agua Verde, trying in vain to find Recycled Cycles. Burke Gilman trail next, biked to Gasworks, frisbee and the amazing picturesque view. Arabella and I saw homeless people making a fire under the roofed part. Felt like scouts, spying. Ughh I still feel bad about dropping the Street Newspapers and Homelessness Seminar, but I really love Political Science and Linguistics. Oh vell. Maybe next year? Anyway, frisbee was alright, I think I'm getting the hang of it. Seeing our parked bikes, Arabella commented on how cool it was that Kevin's bike (his dad's old bike) and the yellow bike he gave me (Kevin's mom's old bike) probably rode together before and are doing it again. AWW! Omagahh that's so cool! Dying from the cuteness.

Biked back to UW, so many uphill battles (quasi-literally). Dropped off the bikes at Haggett, then met with Nadine and the four of us ate at Orange King. Good call, Julius. Their sauce was amazing. Gash. Yunnie and picked up bubble tea for Bill and Zack, dropped it off awkwardly at Zack's since we could only stay for a little while. Back to Norcamp.

On the way, back we met up with Nicole, feels like I hadn't seen her in ages. Confronted her about her slanderous statements. HAHA. Kevin you know I'm kidding, right? Nicole, don't believe the hype. Anyway, Kevin would be the one holding the groceries. Very anime trees. Very.

Study at Grey Lounge, Arabella leaves, pokemon (not really). Everytime I have a moment to my thoughts, all that pops up is the word "pokemon." It's bothering me. Some kind of Freudian thing? Ah well. Pokemon.

Played the Song Shuffle game with Nicole, Cameron, and Lorraine. Hilarious.

Night Night

Team Player
MONDAY, after classes, I meet with Bill and off we go to Yunnie to meet a secret someone (it was Zack). Tim meets us shortly after. The topic of Frisbee arises, and lo and behold I become a recruited member of The Norhtwind [sic].

I haven't been in an official team sport (kickball/capture the flag/&c during P.E. does not count, since I never really played those games anyway, just stood around) since, probably 6th grade when Brownsville had those mandatory softball tournaments. It was then that I ran in loops and loops between homeplate and first base, being chased by the short stop as I tried to score a single, only to learn that stepping onto first base after running outside of the white line doesn't count.

The whole thing brought up bad memories of two-hand touch, karate when I was five and bawled during punching drills, the failed attempt by my parents to enlist me in the boyscouts, basketball the Ridgetop kids, team badminton at the IMA, and possibly even events that I've repressed and can't remember for the sheer trauma of it all. Not that I'm entirely antisocial, just I don't like the pressure of letting people down and the oh-so-searing judgement. Anyway, I guess I'll just have to get over it 'cause I've already declared my loyalty to the team.

I guess it was alright, too. There was a lot of running, and we played our first game against 30-somethings and that was mind-boggling, but it wasn't as intense as I thought it would be. Walking back to my room to get ready for the game, I called Kevin and Nadine just to cry and whine and hyperventilate while moaning "I don't wannnnaaaa!!" as I mentally regressed a decade or so. At least I got Randrew (as opposed to Nandrew and Mandrew) to come, and he's INSANELY good, and that way I didn't have to be on the field for too long. Ugh, I just don't like sports in general, aside from things I could do myself and that don't require running, which is why I like singles badminton, racquetball, gymnastics, weight training, and biking/longboarding so much, I guess.

Also, It was funny that one time when we had control over the frisbee, and the handler was passing it to a girl on the team, and the frisbee flew up and as the other person guarding our girl was running towards her, it shot down and hit the other team's member on the head, to which her team mate shouts "GOOD DEFENSE!!" HAHA. meh.

Anyway, sorry, Tim, that I wasn't better but I'll try harder (as much as I possibly could) next time, and I'm actually glad I did it, just for the experience. Let's see how it goes next time.

TUESDAY was fun, though I fell asleep during Architecture again. I fall asleep all the time while I'm writing, so you can see how my handwriting just flatlines from cursive where my pen glides over the paper as my hand goes limp. I'm going to bomb the course, I know it, since so much of our tests are based on lectures & the readings I don't do. Oh vell.

Hung out with Nicole, Eva, and Erica for a bit, it's so cool that the my social spheres are aligning. Also, Nicole, Nades told me what you said about teh gheys during lunch. HAHA youse funny. Then got some food at University Teriyaki for Bill and I and ate it at his apartment. Brawl Brawl Brawl.

IMA with Tim and Kevin. Tim's a really good IMA partner, since he doesn't run insanely fast like Kevin, and he's not adverse to the weight room. Kevin, we're gonna have a Rocky-esque montage and have you punch cow carcasses and run up the steps of the capitol building to get you ready for the bench press. Don't worry, it'll be good times.

I LOVE BIKING. Before I biked to Little Thai and to meet with The Trio, as I'll from henceforth call them (also, until otherwise noted, Nicole & Lorraine = The Twins, Kevin & Nadine = The Other Two; Jesse & Andrew & Alana & John & The Other Two = The Lunchables; Zack & Eva & Nicole & Erica = The Architects), ate a with The Other Two at the 8, good times. Afterwards, picked up a fried eggplant gyro (which I still can't pronounce), went to Zack's, Brawl Brawl Brawl.

Back to dorms, met with The Other Two, helped Kevs with HTML, Nades with her Love Life. All's good good good.

Same Old Same Old
First week of classes = OVER. Scheduling dillemas = OVER. Apple turn = OVAAAR. After a lifetime of deciding on any combination of ART H 203, SOC 352, ARCH 251, POL S 201, H A&S 350 A, LING 200, and PHYS 207, I've reduced it down to just the POL S, ARCH, and LING classes. Political Science/Theory or English Major is in the works. I actually received an email from my design professors, telling me that I was on the shortlist of people they would recommend to take the design entrance exam. Hope is revitalised. Yes yes yes!

Talked to Tim, next year we should be dorming together if he doesn't get an apartment. YAY!! So excited, never lived with a friend before. You know what I said about jumping off of cliffs, guy. Don't forget it. Kelsey, Nadine, Lorraine, and Nicole intend to dorm at Stevens Court next year also. I will be there all the time. No lie, just fact. Hope Zack gets an apartment, and I hope Tim and I can get a dorm next to Kevin so he isn't the only one up at Norcamp. Anyway, McCarty is fine and it houses Ian's so the trip to work next year won't be so far away. But I'm just being ahead of myself, so it's all still up for negotiation so tell me what you want, Tim. Yay!

Enough about school, ugh. Last week was fun, my dad delivered yellow bike (but with a red helmet that I refuse to wear), lots of study sessions, Ocarina of Time + Brawl with Bill, IMA with Zack, Tim, and Kevin, Into the Wild, Video Chat with Mariela and Misha then Texas Hold'em, PB&J, and Late Night Feelings Conversations about Love Lives with the Girls til 6:00 in the morning on Friday/Saturday. Nice that we all know our innermost thoughts (cue dramatic score... aaand SCENE). We tend to do that a lot, right? Haha.

Saturday was so so so fun. IMA with Dara in the morning, Shopping at Crossroads with Tim and Kevin, Agua Verde, Nadine's lost cell phone, THE BLACK KEYS. Holy moly. So so so good. AND they played "You're the One." Trés magnifique. Mosh pits are funny, especially seeing Kevin get pushed around. It was good to see people dancing, even that one guy who randomly did the full-arm bob that people do at hip hop shows. Fularious! Did not get a poster though, should have taken one from the wall while we waited for the band to get on stage for 2 hours (including the opening act that came before. Loud loud loud). Calves so sore from standing/being episodically moshed(?) around. I need to get a job just to go to these things. Speaking of, I cashed in my second check last week, $141.16 in the bank. Yesshhh.

Afterwards, Kevin and I ate at Aladdin's Gyrocery (Which I still can't pronounce. Must write it in IPA, I guess) while the Girls and Monica's Andrew went to Neighbours. HAHA they're regulars. Anyway, After realising that we were still hungry Kevin and I went to the Hamburger Hut for moar. Called up Bill and he came with his friend, Ron Chu. HAHA cool. Magic carpet/piggy-back ride to Zack's and Brawl. I don't know what time we arrived there, all I remember is that one moment we were all playing Brawl and the next I suddenly I woke up and it was 4 in the morning and they were just getting finished. Oh, you guys! Yay!

Woke up on Sunday at 10 to get tickets to the Teenagers and the Handsome Furs show on the 19th with Kevinstein and Nades. On the 18th, Arabella already bought us all tickets to the Fleet Foxes. I'm totally ready for an epic weekend of music. Speaking of, I'm also ENTIRELY ENTHUSED AND READY to (hypothetically) go to Chicago August 1-3 for LOLLAPALOOZA. Broken Social Scene, Grizzly Bear, Radiohead, Black Keys, Cool Kids, Explosions in the Sky?!?!? I'm SO SO SO SO THERE.

That aside, we also went to make use of the 75% Off Sale at Twice Sold Tales off of Broadway. Purchases:

+ Best New American Voices 2003 (Short Fiction) ed. Joyce Carol Oates
+ The Best American Poetry 1998 ed. David Lehman & John Hollander
+ The Best American Poetry 1995 ed. David Lehman & Richard Howard
+ Odyssey by Homer, trans. Stanley Lombardo
+ The Music of Your Life by John Rowell

I really shouldn't have bought them all, but it only cost a grand total of $6 dollars so WHATEV. Oh man, so good. On the way back while waiting for the 49, we stopped at American Apparel (I was about to type American Outfitters HAHA), and we saw Badminton Jo(h?)n. Haha crazy.

Went back to dorms, changed, went to Zack's again, tulips everywhere. After too short a time, Nades, Kevs, Zacharius and Timea went to Bellevue for frisbee, I left to meet Nicram and Lolau for the Spectrum Dance Company's Fun! Rock! Pop! Spring Cleaning show at the Moore, and Billyam went back to write angsty poetry beside a reflecting pool of emotion or something haha. Yes, those are your nicknames in my cell phone. Yes I call you those names in my head but never out loud.

The show wasn't really so much of the Rock! or Pop! but it was Fun! and cool to see dance with Lorraine and Nicole who are really enthusiastic about it. There was a dance to music by M.I.A. and another set to TV on the Radio. That was cool, too.

We went back home to eat at Thai 65 (Nicole's Fave), when we just happened to see Cris, and the four of us went went together. Met up with Nadine, who said frisbee was great, that we should go to a Chinese restaurant there some time cause it was amazing. Study party and theoretical discussion soon to follow at Ian's and the Grey Lounge. Huzzah! The basics of my week(end).

Lessons Learned: Don't bike and hold your bag of textbooks in front of you. Bad News.

ALSO: FontStruct is SO. RIDICULOUSLY. COOL.

ALSO: To be added to the List of Things We Did During the Time I Haven't Blogged: "The Land of P," Elephant, Annie Hall, "Have You the Materials", Cedar's, White Elephant Gift Exchange, Piggy Banks, Johnny Rockets, Banana Photoshoot, Creating an Art Gallery, The Lawrimore Project, "Roger Shimomura's Awesome Body... of Work," wind storms during the trip to the sculpture park and almost losing an eye to a flying rock, fishnet stockings, Pokemon Diamond & the Perfect Team, Cooking Mama, Aileen's fractured leg, The Chapel of St. Ignatius, Ti Amo's, Arabella's Mini-Wii gift, Arabella's Apartment Trips, Love Sack. More to come as I remember.

BTW, I now have text, so text away! Yay!
