On February 25, 2006, the 20th anniversary of the first People Power EDSA revolution in the Philippines, not only are we celebrating freedom from dictatorship but we are launching an all-out war to gain freedom from poverty.  People Power over poverty!

Gawad Kalinga (GK) is launching the GK 1MB campaign on that day to gather a million heroes who will stand up and be counted to do their part in rebuilding the nation.  Ordinary Filipinos worldwide, the youth, professionals, the children, soldiers, and government workers will unite to form an army of one million strong volunteers to build beautiful communities in what used to be slums.

In the U.S., GK 1MB or Isang Milyong Bayani, will be in the form of a gathering of GK volunteers and partners, preferably with the media present, to launch the GK 1MB campaign and kick off the big four GK events in the USA for the year 2006.

How it Started

GK1MB is an initiative of the young volunteers of Gawad Kalinga, mostly students of various universities and colleges in the Metro Manila area. It does not limit itself to the youth, however, as many of the faculty members and alumni of those educational institutions are just as helpful and eager to join GK1MB. Corporate partners and their employees are also primary candidates for membership in a movement that seeks to mainstream heroism and nation building in the hearts, minds and muscles of patriotic Filipinos.

The call for heroism through Gawad Kalinga is being heard across the globe, and Filipinos abroad are responding. Over and above the substantial contribution of resources they have been sending to Gawad Kalinga, enough to have triggered over 600 GK communities to rise and ease the pain of poverty and marginalization of more than 15,000 families, many are coming home to help Gawad Kalinga build those homes, communities and a nation they can be proud of. They, too, will be powerful members of GK1MB.

The Invitation

Gawad Kalinga makes an open invitation to all who believe that our nation can be built community by community, beginning with the poorest of the poor, and instilling in the members of those communities a lifestyle grounded on bayanihan and productivity.

USA GK 1MB Launch Specific Goals

  1. To help gather one million individuals to become heroes to Filipinos and to their motherland by eradicating poverty in the Philippines through the GK777 movement.  GK777 is Gawad Kalinga's mission to build 700,000 homes in 7,000 communities in 7 years.  To date, there are over 15,000 homes built in 600 GK sites, and everyone – be they a CEO of a Fortune 500 company or an ordinary citizen, young or old, Filipino or non-Filipino – is welcome to answer this call to heroism.  The only qualifications are a deep desire to aid the less fortunate and a sincere yearning to share the vision of a No More Slum Philippines.
