WELCOME BACK TO UCI! This is the start of the end... so to speak! Spring Quarter is here... for some, it will be the last Spring quarter of their UCI career... for others... it's only the first... Either way... LET'S MAKE THE BEST OF IT! Semi Pictures - Semi pictures are going to be available for pick-up at this week's meeting on THURSDAY! You must pick them up at THE KABA MEETINGS! It is a space that Kaba will provide to discuss issues that directly affect these communities and their constituants, or simply a place to hang out. We need people for the following logistical committees: Props- Saturdays, stage crew; Costumes crew; Makeup committee; Programs crew. Hey Kababayan! It's winter quarter 2007... Which means it's a fresh beginning in school we all wish we had during 9th week last quarter! Meetings will be held in a different room this quarter... so hit us up at SSL 206 (that's right, we be moving up to the 2nd floor!) this, and all the other Mondays at 7pm! We'll be talking about yearbook and other upcoming events for the quarter... Like RETREAT!! =) Semi-Formal... Interested? Need a date? Hello hello hello Kababayan!! Thank you to those who came out to support at New Student Orientation, our First General Meeting, and our First Kaba Party! We hope you had a great time at any and all events because we sure enjoyed seeing all your happy faces! And just so everyone knows, just because you couldn't make it to any or all of the events, or if you can't make it to any of the rest of the meetings this quarter due to that one class on Thursday nights from 7-10p, IT'S STILL OK!! We have decided to postpone the t-shirt deadline for a week, to see if there were any creative talents in our club that like to procrastinate a little =)... KABABAYAN!! Thanks for those that came out to FPAC! We sure did have a blast hanging out with the likes of NEXT PHAZE, REX NAVARETTE, FLORANTE IBANEZ, and many more!! Hope you're enjoying the last few days of our summer vacation! For those that are in the middle of Summer Session Two Finals... GOOD LUCK! We look forward to seeing all your bright shinning faces at FIRST GEN (Thurs Sept 21 @ 6:30pm) and all your booty shakin moves at our HOGUE'S PARTY ( Thurs Sept 21 @ 9:30 pm)!! But until then, we have a couple more events that you might want to know of! The Bayanihan Philippine National Dance Company will be performing at the Costa Mesa Performing Arts Center, on Sunday October 1st, 2006. This event will be the first to kick off the month of PAHM!! To those unaware of this dance company, their dance styles are what our PCN have been based from. "Bayani-" is translated to be "hero" and "-han" means direction or place. So literally, Bayanihan means Place of Heroes or Place of Heroism.  The Bayanihan Philippine National Dance company is also known as the "Philippine's National Treasure." As the first Filipino group to perform on Broadway, Bayanihan also has the distinction of being the first non-American dance company to take to the stage at New York's Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, as well as the first Philippine cultural group to perform in Russia, the People's Republic of China and South America. It is very rare that they visit and perform here in the US and so it would be nice to take this opportunity to get a glimpse of our PCN's roots. T-Shirt Designs (and Sweatshirt Designs too!!) Do any of you feel like you want a chance to show off your creative side?? Why not show it by turning in designs for the KABA member t-shirt for the 2006-2007 school year! You're design (if chosen) will go down in Kaba t-shirt history! A Note from our Culture Coordinator: To the General Members of Kababayan: The month of October is an exciting month for not only our organization, but for all those who share in our culture. October is celebrated as Pilipino American Heritage Month, what many of you know as PAHM. And this year I have set some goals and missions in the programing for the month. I hate to call it "my" programming when in fact the programming is just as much yours. As Cultural Coordinator, my job is to allow your programming to be beneficial, enjoyable and fufilling to each and everyone of you. So I would like to share with you what mission I hope we can fufill together. Basically, "Identity" is the key factor to what I am hoping will be achieved during the month; how it has changed in our eyes and the eyes of the community that surrounds us, both filipino and non-filipino american. This is not limited to teaching why and how we have continued to hold on to our cultural identity amidst struggles with assimilation and controversy, but opens up the opportunity for each of us to find an understanding in ourselves of how we identify and ourselves as Filipino Americans. The month will be divided into three parts, basically, what was then, what is now, and what we hav eto look forward to. Aside from sharing with you the plans for PAHM, I am writing to ask for your help. I want to involve the outside Filipino Community as much as possible in all of the programing. So I ask that if any of you might know of individuals apart of the community who might one to share their stories and experiences in America, there will hopefully be opportunity to do so. I am hoping to birng out as much of the community as possible. Age is not an issue, young and old are welcome to come and share during the month so please please please, get back to me as soon as you all can on such individuals. We welcome anyone who has a story to tell, this includes yourselves. Take in mind the mission and goals that I have shared with you although the are still rough ideas that is being played with, it is "our" programming and I felt I should share it with you all. The month of October is designated Pilipino American Heritage Month, I hope that you will always be reminded that everyday that we are given the opportunities to live our lives, we should celebrate with pride in our hearts, that our culture and its history still thrives upon American soil. This is Jared Hamoy, this year's Community Advocacy Coord. I want to tell you guys about an event coming up on September 9-10. It's called FPAC, Festival of Philippine Arts & Culture. It is a festival that has been going on for the past 15 years. The group that hosts it, FilAm Arts, has worked with different artists, community organizations, businesses and individuals to promote all of the different types of art forms within the community. A bunch of performers will be there such as Rex Navarrete, The Visionaries, Camille Velasco, Native Guns, Charmaine Clamor, Bernardo Bernardo, Florante Ibanez, Joey Guila, and much more. The festival will need lots of people to help and volunteer for the event. Like I said, it's going to take place on September 9-10 at Point Fermin Park in San Pedro. It is from 10 AM – 6 PM on both of those days. There will be a lot of things going on and they could really use the help. If you are interested, please e-mail me or any other board member in Kaba. FPAC!!! Hey Kababayan! Guess what's right around the corner? It's the 15th Annual Festival of Philippine Arts & Culture! How would you like to come out to Point Fermin, San Pedro to be a volunteer for FPAC and be able to check out all the cool people and events that are gonna be there? Here are some details: WHO: YOU WHAT: Festival of Philippine Arts & Culture WHERE: Point Fermin, San Pedro WHEN: Saturday, September 9th & Sunday, September 10th WHY: Because you were gonna go anyway. And so you can meet new people, and see cool things, and have a blast! You do have to RSVP to volunteer because we have to let the FPAC organizers know how many volunteers we'll have for them! Hey Kababayan! How's everyone's vacation been? Summer's almost over, so enjoy it while it lasts! Missing some Kaba funtimes?! Come out to the bonfire this Friday, August 18th at Corona del Mar. If you need a ride, please meet at the flagpoles by 5pm sharp. It's potluck style, so we ask that the ladies to please bring drinks and cups and that the guys bring snacks to share. There will be plenty of time to just chill, so feel free to bring supplies for beachy activities. The 15th annual FPAC (Festival of Philippine Arts and Culture) is coming up on September 9th and 10th! Its going to be held at Pt. Fermin Park in San Pedro. Come to chill with friends and to support up-and-coming Pilipino artists. If you're interested in volunteering for FPAC, let us know and fill out the volunteer application form. Applications for the PCN coordinator position are due on Wednesday, August 16th no later than 12 NOON. Please turn them in to the kaba board yahoo group ASAP. HI KABA !!! It's Pia and Rachel here... doing our very update as your new Publicity Co-Coords!!! How's summer been for everyone? We actually have a few events coming up over the summer, that we wanted you to know about, and were hoping you could join us! Friday, July 21 (5pm-9pm): Fundraising Dinner at Pat & Oscar's (behind the movie theater), in the Tustin Marketplace, then afterwards, we can go and see Pixar's new movie: Monster House Friday, August 4 (9am): Trip to Six Flag's Theme Park, meet up at UCI's flagpoles for carpooling, and bring a Coke can if you can! Friday August 18 (7pm): Bonfire at Corona Del Mar (where we had our last general meeting!), FYI, this'll be another potluck style event! Alright Kaba! We hope to see all your smiling faces out there!
